Name: Nemus Everto
Artifact: Nemus crystal
Artifact power: Vegetation
Here's my rough concept for dw3. Hope you like it so far.
Its a pretty rough concept to start with but i think i'll start modelling and develop the character as i go along.
I typed 'tree demon' into an online English to Latin Translator and it came up with his name 'Nemus Everto' which i think fits quite well.
02 February 2008, 02:42 AM
He looks like he could be standing next to you in a mountain forest, and you'd never know.
02 February 2008, 02:12 PM
cool idea man! I want the birds nastier!
02 February 2008, 02:14 PM
Nice, you've got to render him half-camoflauged in a forest with birds sitting on his head :)
02 February 2008, 02:25 PM
That's one evil son of a... Sweet!
It's just a first sketch but... maybe develop the horns a bit more, making them less generic?
I'm also making a treelike character so I'm going to check this thread out. :)
Keep 'em coming. :buttrock:
02 February 2008, 02:32 PM
Cool concept! I got a tree going myself, I'm envious of your name though, why didn't I think of that :).
02 February 2008, 03:16 PM
Looking good dude, interesting concept. He looks realy mean. Looking forward to seeing him 3d'd.
03 March 2008, 01:24 AM
I love the concept...the huuuge horns are awesome and I like the way the character is posed:thumbsup:
03 March 2008, 01:33 PM
Thanks very much for the comments.
I forgot to mention that he's in the warlord category before.
Iíve created a rough sculpt of the body without the tree parts and armour which Iíll add later. I've also been playing around with the horn designs, not sure if Iím 100 percent satisfied with them yet but i keep coming back to these large wide ones as i like the silhouette they make.
hope you like him.
03 March 2008, 01:21 PM
Looking great, cool anatomy. Looking forward to all the gnarnliness . He is one badd ass warlord.
03 March 2008, 07:50 PM
I've roughed out a few of the other parts and continued experimenting with the horns, playing around with double sets and branches. Not too sure which one to go for at the moment so any help would be appreciated.
03 March 2008, 10:18 AM
i like the first one, mainly as i prefer the horns and stomach armour the most. Maybe try a few more radically differing ideas too, same guy, just more differing wood, veggie stuff, maybe some turf up there too, like the illustrations from that book called giants, can't remeber who drew it, looks like alan lee and brian froud again but i dont think it is. Maybe just google up a lot of vegetation, swamps, bracken, moss, maybe his skin could be chameleon-like, like a reptile who camouflages himself in the forest. I do like one, just feel you may still be able to add a tad more.
03 March 2008, 02:38 PM
This is coming along realy nicely darren. It looks different to a lot of the other concepts on here.
I like the bottom right design the moset, the others look a bit too complicated and messy. Maybe try a mixture between that one and the top right one.
03 March 2008, 03:59 PM
Looks really good dude...I like the one on the top right the most:thumbsup:
03 March 2008, 04:28 PM
i like the one in the upper left. feels more incorporated with the tree idea. speaking of which, i love the treearm! it feels so powerful
03 March 2008, 06:18 PM
I was hoping there would be 1 design that everyone prefered but it seems to be a mix. I'm still at a bit of a loss as I'm pretty bad at making decisions like this when i have a few options. I'll sit on it for a bit and work up the rest of the body. I quite like the idea of branches growing around the horns but i think maybe the second set of lower horns is overkill.
I've never actually mentioned the magical artefact and my plan is to have a magical seed that is sugically implanted into the demons left hand. The seed then grows from within the demon giving him strength and protection in the form of his mutated tree arm and back area. I'm not sure if i'll get away with this or not as you can't actually see the artefact as such, but then again i supose the artefact grows and therefore the artefact is actually the vegetation covering. what do you guys think? If this won't work then maybe he can have an orb or something similar implanted into him that will be more visible.
Thanks for the comments on the arm Jeff. I actually decided to change it a bit today and roughly sculpted it with more of the arm anatomy influencing the form. I bent the fingers inwards and they've become more root like. I'll spread the bark surface over his back and into his torso slightly adding more vegetation etc in those areas. I may make more of the vines hanging down like dreaded hair as i quite like this effect.
I'm off work for a few days so hopefully i'll be able to update again soon. the laptop doesn't handle the high poly counts too well so it might go a bit slowly. i'll probably have to wait till i'm back in the office to get stuck into the sculpt.
I'm off out to buy myself a mouse now, this last sculpt was done on the laptops trackpad which isn't the easiest to use. I should really get myself a wacom to use at home. anyway i'm blabbering on here. get back to your DW3 entries!
03 March 2008, 07:23 PM
Wow, really cool character! I like the upper left one, its a much funnier idea when the horns looks like they are infested with the tree.
03 March 2008, 08:18 PM
Neat stuff so far! Of the last posts, I prefer the top renders better - for a vegetation guy, I really like the horms being tree-branches (or branch-like.) It'sd a fun idea that works visually. Without the horns, it's just dreadlocks, and the simple horns just aren't as creative as the top idea. Good luck with the remainder!
03 March 2008, 08:35 PM
I agree with walrus the branch horns suits your character and the others are too simple.
Great character by the way.
I had this Idea ,perhaps you may want to to put an animal or creature living inside of a horn it could be like his pet or just a fool animal that thought it was just a tree .
03 March 2008, 09:02 PM
gyorkland: nice idea, I was thinking along similar lines myself. In my original concept i had a dodo and a vulture nesting in the branches. Not sure i'll have enough polys left with all these branches and vines tho'. I'm going to retopologise when the sculpt is finish so i'll see how I get on. I'm sure i'll be able to squeeze something in.
03 March 2008, 09:03 PM
pretty cool character, the idea of the branches gives your character more interesting
03 March 2008, 11:36 AM
sweet dude. here's some suggestions:
make the seed /orb artifact visible but embedded.
An animal is still worth considering - put a squirrel in there somewhere - only a few polys needed. or an empty bird nest with eggs (no bird since it moves around and scares the bird away) as a unique touch.
03 March 2008, 08:03 PM
any updates? Come on I am getting impatient.
03 March 2008, 11:24 AM
Sorry Rob haven't had a chance to work on this at all this week. i doubt i'll finish at this rate. not long to go now.
03 March 2008, 12:00 PM
looks cool man.. i really like the arms..
now u should move ahead with the lowpoly and textures.. not much time left :P
i mydelf i getting screwed due to time....
neways keep up the good work
04 April 2008, 10:08 PM
OK, so i've finally textures this guys high res model, I will transfer the normals diffuse and occlusion as soon as i've finished the low. Its still in pieces and needs some decent uvs. I'd like to sculpt up this guy a little more but i wont get a chance to do anything further with the low res still needing work. Plus its my other halfs 30th this week and she'll get mad if i spend that working on DW3! She's pretty mad today as i haven't changed a single nappy all day (thats an english diaper btw). hopefully i'll get this done in time. if not then i'll still finish it relatively soon.

04 April 2008, 11:12 AM
Looks great - the bark skin texture was a good move. you're going to make it!!
04 April 2008, 12:30 PM
Just the armour and horns to go, shiny metal is my tuppence worth. I know tiz a nightmare when u already work such long hours but you can still just about finish. Great work Darren.
04 April 2008, 02:39 PM
is it finished yet???!!!
04 April 2008, 02:52 PM
cool dude! the profile with the symbol looks perticularly monsterous! and i like the sqwirl thats funny haha
im not feeling the red light though, makes it look to clutered :-/
04 April 2008, 10:19 AM
Great work darren, he looks realy mean. I realy like his profile, the way his head is part of his torso. Good work on the textures, they've added alot of life to him. My favourite part is his big tree hand, I like the way it hangs on the floor, feels heavy. Want to see him posed now.
04 April 2008, 02:17 AM
Its 2.56 am here in old blighty and this is probably the earliest i've been off to bed all week. but finally i'm done! my entry has all been submitted to the game artisans site and below are the images i posted.
Thanks for all the great feedback and crits guys, this is actually my first post and i've really enjoyed the whole experience although i haven't enjoyed the lack of sleep.
Jase and Rob you've both been a great help with decision making . you both know how bad i am at that and without your input i'd have given up by now or still been at the concept stage. anyway i'm waffeliing on...its late and i really need slepp, so time for bed. here's the pics. let me know what you think.

Thanks for the help, I'm gonna give it a shot today now. You've done a great job, really like the images, get some sleep for a second and then I believe you still have a family! Definately some of the best stuff I've seen and one of the only finished entries I've seen.
04 April 2008, 08:03 PM
Good job all round, the squirrel is the bomb. Not literally a bomb. You know what I mean. Let's all take next week off work as a reward!
04 April 2008, 12:58 AM
Now this guy looks grounded! and if anyone tries to mess with him they'll be barking up the wrong tree (my humour is in endless supply).
I love the twist in the horns, nice detail. maaan, he looks about 10,000 years old, really good weight in that tree arm!
He's also making me hungry, i'm getting some salad.
well done in finishing, i'm off to sleep!
04 April 2008, 02:03 AM
Great job darren, he looks awsome.
You realy got all those details, horns, twigs, leaves and squirrel in there under 9000 tris :applause:
I realy like the pic where he's walking, scary. And the leaves look wicked.
Good luck dude.
04 April 2008, 05:24 PM
a couple more images, the top one is for the group poster.
04 April 2008, 08:19 PM
Well Exicuted, I like how you made the logo on his shoulder. I wish I would have done some thing more pronounced with the logo rather then the suble small one i put on ..
04 April 2008, 08:40 PM
Thanks for the comments guys. I've been playing around and came up with this which i
I thought it was quite funny. I actually wish i'd done something like this for my beauty shot, too late now tho'.
04 April 2008, 03:15 AM
Good idea that would've been cool! I like your bark textures..... I did an ent as well and its cool to see the similarities we chose, like the glowing red eyes =) I like your guys feet and one giant arm. Also the foliage which I didnt do any of. Took up a lot of poly's I see though.
Looks great nice to see the finished product and its an achievement in itself to finish this thing! I know by the end of it I'm so sick of it and can't wait to get it over with!
04 April 2008, 10:41 AM
thanks Valri, I wasn't too sure I'd manage to squeeze in the leaves but in the end i got them down to under 1000 leaving 8000 for the main body which was still tight with all those branches and the armour but i managed it. yours looks great btw. good luck.
