can't wait for your output! It's certainly gonna be sweet! :)

02-25-2008, 07:54 PM
Can't wait to see what you come up with. Fish-Wizards FTW!

02-26-2008, 07:50 AM
Thanks for the vote of confidence! This should be fun!

OK, here are my first round of thumbnails for this guy. Not settled on the specifics of his character yet, just looking for inspiration... see where the pencil leads me:

Very nice concepts, it is very difficult to choose one, I like 1 and 7.
All the best:thumbsup:

02-26-2008, 09:05 AM
looking good:) I think 6 or 7.

02-26-2008, 10:55 AM
Muttonhead, I wouldn't expect anything less than a beautiful choice of design ideas and these are amazing.
I really like 3, 9, 11. I think because perhaps the heads on the others are little too overpowering but they definitely say "badass fish guy comin' to git ya!"

hey, the sketch work on your blog/website is inspiring to say the least! :)

03-03-2008, 05:02 AM
Thanks guys! Yeah, I like 7 also, but I also kinda like 5. I think I will try to come up with a design that is somewhere between tohe two, or has some of the best elements of both of those. Or I might do something altogether different.

I think my guy is going to be a Clericon, even though I named him Anglermage.... hehe whoops!

Or not, maybe he will remain an invoker...

Regardless, I wanted to get some inspirartion for his magical device/weapon, so I went to the Walters Art museum today (that's in Baltimore). They have a really impressive collection of old fancy flint-lock pistols and black-power blunderbuss-things. These things are covered in amazing little details and gilding, which I find really fascinating, so I drew some of them.

I'm thinking it would be neat if this guy was a clericon, and had a "Holy Blunderbuss", carved with all sorts of religious iconography....

Plus I did one drawing of a set of ceremonial child's armor, which might serve as some inspiration for this guy if he is wearing some armor bits:

That's all for now!

very cool!!! number 6 is cute in an old man grumpy sort of way

03-05-2008, 10:43 PM
Cool concepts  I also think no.6 could be an interesting character.

03-05-2008, 10:46 PM
I like numbers 1, 6 and 7. And number 8 if the head were to be tweaked somewhat. Awesome work so far!

03-05-2008, 10:55 PM
God I love stylized work like this. I hope they recognize something other than unreal 3 style work this year. Looking forward to your updates.

Love the style! All great concepts... I like 5 and 7... but then 3 keeps talking to me so... Anyone you pick will look wonderful in the end! Thanks for sharing...

03-06-2008, 12:20 AM
Woo awesome sketches dude, goodluck to ya :D

03-06-2008, 12:51 AM
Really nice stuff.. :) I really like quite a few of them for their personality and characteristics. I dont know if they convince me that they are able to defeat all recistance and stuff, but i guess you'll figure it out! Nr 6 is my fav.. Keep it up!

Good luck!

03-12-2008, 03:12 AM
Thanks everybody! Here is my final design pose drawing. Hope you like it. Tired now, will respond to individual comments later....

03-12-2008, 05:30 AM
veryvery....cool and fun character:) !
I admire your detail design of his cloth and prop.

03-12-2008, 07:43 PM
Great, great, great  You should go with this one.

03-12-2008, 11:08 PM
haha, this drawing looks really fun to me. somehow, i feel like the initial sketch #6 talks to me more, lol. maybe the facial expression is more exaggerated? just my thought...er not to say this final drawing is not good, it's great! looking forward for the next update!

03-17-2008, 04:32 AM
This guy kicks ass. If there was a game being made with a bunch of characters like this i would HAVE to work on it. fantastic.

03-17-2008, 05:11 AM
Neat character, Sean. I love all of the ornate detail you've put into his costume and gun. Nice touches that really make him feel internally-consistent and fleshed-out with a whole story to him. Nice work! My only usggestion is that the upper arms seem a tad short to be even usable. But anyhow, good luck moving farward!

03-21-2008, 04:27 PM
Wow, thanks everybody. I will respond to everyone eventually, I am just swamped with work right now. Anyways, here is an update... rockin the color..... I think it will be down to the wire especially since we are crunching at work right now... eek!

03-21-2008, 04:34 PM
Very good, those textures look awesome, great colors and gradients.
It is looking really good so far, best of luck to the challenge. :)

03-21-2008, 07:16 PM
Man, that look in his eyes is killing me :)
Very balanced character and great combination of textures that work great together. Nothing to crit...maybe I'd love to see the fur taken at least to the level of the embroideries on the rest of the clothing. Keep up!

03-22-2008, 04:18 PM
Ok, that's ridiculous, man... excellent entry so far. You're definitely gonna make it into the top 50. I love the variations of the characters initially. It's so much more professional than the way I handled it (sticking with the 3rd idea)... Check out my thread too:

Good work, Sean, as always.

03-23-2008, 08:11 AM
That's just coming along great, Sean. Lovely colors. Still a little work to go on the clothing details... hope you have the time to finsih it off (along with the other sheets.) Good luck with your crunch!

03-23-2008, 08:32 AM
Glorious colour. Excellent costumery.

03-27-2008, 07:17 AM
damn..you are just so good..!!

03-27-2008, 07:20 AM
you are just so good!! damn!! :)

04-04-2008, 06:06 AM
Excellent design here muttonhead! The embroidery, the clothing, and the colors are all very well balanced. Good one on you! Now finish that sucker up!

04-06-2008, 07:04 PM
I love 6 and 8, if you ever get a chance after all this I'd like to see them given a dash of paint too. Love the final paintjob, lots of character man. Well played Muttonman!

04-06-2008, 07:30 PM
I liked nr. 3! It seems somehow "balanced" to me.

This colored guy is great also, and great weaponry!

04-10-2008, 04:46 AM
OK, done with the illustration (why do these contests always seem to coincide with tax season, crunchtime in the office, and random freelance projects that come out of nowhere?)

If you guys have any suggestions for final finishing touches, thatwould be awesome, I will go into everyone else's thread and try to make comments in return.... Thanks all! Good luck to you all!

04-10-2008, 04:47 AM
Argh, crud, forgot to include the logo.... will do that ASAP....

04-10-2008, 05:01 AM
And that right foot is bothering me..... bad perspective.... blah..

04-11-2008, 03:18 AM

I just realized that you and Sang are representing CGTALK :) Your post was right above mine...doh. This guy is so different. Not the standard guy with armor thing. As always your details are great as is your design and final render. Good luck with entry. Grab one of those cintiqs :)

04-12-2008, 03:25 PM
Nice work on the final! I agree about the foot. I like the colors a lot, as well as how simple it is, 'cause I went apeshit on mine (in a bad way). Also, don't forget to post the ortho!

Good luck!

04-13-2008, 03:28 AM
Thanks guys! Good luck with yours as well!

Here are my final images:

04-13-2008, 04:32 AM

04-13-2008, 07:44 AM
Ahh.. You made it. Good luck :)

05-30-2008, 09:46 AM
Congrats. 11'th place is a good rank :)

05-30-2008, 02:49 PM
Thanks man! Yeah I am pretty shocked I made it that far! But now I am motivated to do even better next time!

The way I look at it, being #11 is like being #1 twice! :)

Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback and support!

05-30-2008, 04:53 PM
Yap congratz man!Great original character!

The way I look at it, being #11 is like being #1 twice! :)

05-30-2008, 06:42 PM
The way I look at it, being #11 is like being #1 twice! :)

LOL!!! That's the spirit!

05-30-2008, 07:32 PM
Yay, let's hear it for the CGTalk-sponsorred funny-looking aqautic guys! :) Way to go on your win, Sean, congratulations! In the judges' comments, I especially liked Paul Richard's notes on you piece concerning not going with a "safe" entry. (I was especially pleased with Paul's notes as I'm a big fan of his work and like visiting his site.)

anyhow, great work, and congratulations!
