More! Nailing down the general direction now. I'm thinking he's a bit of an antihero. He comes from a long line of humans descended from a prophet, though he's the first in many generations to have any actual affinity for the magical powers of the Light. His family's tradition of posturing and abusing their positions as religious leaders had jaded him and he ran away while young, hiding his healing abilities and growing up on a sailing ship trading in black market holy artifacts. He long believed humans to be unworthy of saving and watched as the wars continued to take their toll on humanity's heroes. He stood impassively by as he saw the foreign races use their Dark magics to topple his family's crown.
Under the dark alien rule, the black market began to be weeded out and holy artifacts were being confiscated and destroyed. A pragmatist, Hale turned mercenary, and was hired on with the aliens for his knowledge of the underground Holy economy. His time was divided between raiding secret storehouses and standing watch over the conquering aliens' human prisoners. But in his work for the alien overlords he stumbled upon something he had never believed in before: proof of his family's Holy history, his weapon artifact. When he touched it, the presence of such raw, undiluted Light awakened the latent powers deep within him and burned away those in his presence that were touched by the Dark.
Thusly Hale was marked by the human prisoners and slaves as the years-missing Holy prince, and by Dark lords as the number one threat. The Dark ones set out to kill him before he could know the full breadth of his powers. In his fight to survive he grew in power, and though he didn't want them, followers began to join him and fight against the Darkness.
And just as the tide began to turn... another age-old myth, the Machines, began to appear from the wormholes.
I think it goes something like that anyway.
Sorry, that's long, I like backstories :P
