hi guys !

All week i've been thinking what character should i create for this war. I have an idea, but i haven't figured out yet all the details. The main point is that i want to create a caster, an invoker, but i haven't decided yet what element or item should he use.

Last year i made something sober, this year on the other hand i want to enjoy myself, so i'll go with some dark humor, something in the lines of Terry Pratchett books. (http://www.terrypratchettbooks.com/discworld/)

I hope something good will come out of this.

Now let's get the weapons loaded !


I can't decide whether to go with a single or multiple characters entry. If i would go with only one character my first choice would be something inbetween 4 and 5. The alternative would be a small, older and fragile caster ( 4 or 5), helped by a younger and stronger assistant ( 1 , 2 or 3 ). I'm also thinking of giving the caster a mount.

I'll soon post the story ( at least what i've figured out untill now ).

I'm in the same boat as well. Can't think of what to do. I would like to do an ice/water type but CGSociety's colors are red/black; more like fire. I like drawing number 4 and it seems more dark/void. Nice concept.

Having on old character and an assistant seems like a neat idea. Were you thinking the older one would be more magical and the younger one would be dumb muscle?

Although , i think the bigger one should be a caster too, to remain in only one of the 4 clases. He would be a more "retarded" invoker, who's needed just to light the fire and cary lugages :D.

Not a clear ideea, but i'm working on it :). I don't know how much you can figure out from the sketch but he' wearing a straitjacket. There's a whole story around it. I haven't decided yet but it might be his super powerfull item.

Hey people, i'm getting a better idea of what i want to do :) .

Here's a concept i have done to clear my mind:


In few words: he's an invoker, his element is summonig or darkness/void ( haven't decided yet in which od the falls better ).

I'll post tomorrow his background story, right now it's too late and i have to go to work in the morning :( .

Hey Nikudy, glad to see you posting ideas :) I like what you've done so far and the idea of having two characters, one smart one dumb is really cool. Perhaps they're bound to each other like that classic tale Of Mice and Men. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Of_Mice_and_Men) The two lead characters, one small and smart, one big and stupid need each other for obvious reasons.. or thats how I remember it anyway, :) :wise:

Would be nice to see you go really crazy with shape ideas.

Ha!! thats crazy, you read my mind, I was in the middle of replying when you posted that sketch.

Its really cool, I can imagine them appearing from the dark void you describe with terrifying speed.

Nice one Claudiu. My only crit is that you could probably exaggerate his silhouette some more. I liked how the neck seems heavier than the lower body in your initial sketches. The demons are very cool too! I'm really looking forward to this.

Today was my birthday :) , so i hadn't much time for domwar lately. I'm 27 years old now :wise:.

Anyway, this is what i came up till now concerrning the artifact.


The orb/globe/whatever feeds on it's master blood ( the red stains are proof of that ), and summons his most cruel/twisted/bloodthirsty/... demons.

I might still have a few iterations till i'm happy with him. I'll start thinking of a second demon but, at this point, i can't estimate how many polys will the caster and the first demon need, so i might end up with only one demon. we'll see ...

Hey Claudiu, nice idea with the dual characters, and nice concepts to, my only concern is that of the big shapes, for me they are looking like the demons are a transformation of the caster, with the same round shape and lean of the neck, but I guess that you want to brake all that roundness with the hard angles from the caster jacket. I am really curious how you will end up in this “war” I liked your post from the dominance war II, really clean and simple to in the sense of composition.

i started on the modelling, but hadn't much to show till now. just base meshes and big volumes.

this is one of the demons i plan on making. depending on how much the texture, polygons and time alow me i'll make more of them.

I wasn't happy with A, and i think i'll go with B. It has more of that combination of fish and insect that i'm trying to get . Next is a diagram with the materials that i'm going for:

Hey great job on the sculpt so far dude, I think the wings could be a little bigger to show that he is powerful... just a suggestion.

It's like a Male insect fighting for a female insect, the male with the biggest "Jaw,wing, etc" is attractive. Cheers

For me the B looks a lot better since the wings looks much more connected with his body and also it fits his skin legacy.

bigger wings will sure look much better but IMO the angle of the enemy hit aquracy will also be bigger.

Loukor: i had that in mind at the beginning, i realized that if i make the demons too big, the caster will be too small to be noticed. so i'll have to mantain a balance.
anyway, this can be tweaked even in the final stage, so i'll have plenty of oportunities to test that. thanks for the suggestion.

The new one looks pretty badass, but it needs somthing, a visual representation of the Jaws soundtrack added to it, or maybey it needs bigger teeth :D

Airflow: it will have bigger, sharper teeth. i'll make them using some planes because of the polys constraint, and will share the same texture space, so i didn't insist on them in the highpoly version.

ok people, update :)

i started the modeling on the caster. i worked mainly on the head. here are some variations. they are very subtle, but i'm a maniac when it comes to a character's personality :


still playing with the silhouette. Some opinions would be good :)

Great progress ... i like to watch it a lot.

Personally i would choose head A because it looks more "bulk" and angry.

For the thorso i would choose 2.

Great start on these claudiu. I love your style and sence of realism in your pieces. The sculpting is spot on. The materials you chose for your beasties should help bring out that alien feeling about them. For your beasties, I think you should really push the menace factor. I mean make those teeth sharper, bulk up and make those arms look just twisted and sharp as razors. They really need to look like they could tear anything up, especially machines. That should also help contrast your summons with your main character. Good Luck. Bafta!

p.s. Great job on your last entry. Nu imi vine sa cred ca n-ai ajuns printre primii in clasament. Meritai sa il fi depasit cel putin pe cel care a luat locul zece care de fapt dupa parerea mea nu a fost la inaltimea lucrarii tale. Asta arata ca cei care voteaza au anumite idei si un anumit stil dupa care se uita. Noroc inca odata.

First lowpoly test:


Presently the demon has around 1800 tris. i wanted to see how much polys i needed and what texture resolution i'll get in the final diffuse texture. I must say i was surprised. i expected it will need more polys and i'll have a lower texture resolution. right now it uses less than a quarter of the texture.

Here i was fooling around, just to get some ideas for the final pose:

Quick update.
Grig is finished :).


And the first variant of the lowpoly snakelike demon :

I am using Topogun so this is very fast. i may iterate a few times till i am happy, and optimize the polycount.

Artefact design:

The red "thing" is a mithycal creature that can enter people's dreams. She had the bad idea to try to enter Grigore's twisted dreams. The demons from his dreams ( "the black serpents/dragons/whatever" ) caught her and bound her to his scepter, so now Grigore has the ability to bring any demon from his freaky imagination into the real world.
The red creature looks kind of silly at the moment. I have to make her more sober and sad.

Small update to Grigore too, he finaly decided what to do with his life. He's a jester now :)

Hey guys!
Long time no post. I didn't feel i had something worth posting till now.
Texture update:


This is only the color and normal map, no specular or anything else. The straitjacket is not finished,the hands and foot not even started yet. Still a long way to go.


With the scepter i'm trying different color combinations.

I just saw the 5 days extension. i was expecting something like that. I still hope to finish earlier to have time for polishing.

The textures are great!
The folds on those pants look good. Can't wait to see the final pose, with the facial expressions and all.
Love the shirt. Looks more like a straitjacket and it gives a psycho essence to the character in my opinion.

I should say i am not happy with this texture :( . It lacks contrast and clarity but i can't get it right. I hope to have enough time to tweak it till the end of tha domwar.

I would need more texture resolution but it is impossible to increase it for the demons. This demon uses 2 thirds of a 1024 sheet( i didn't break the texture into smaller parts, it is just a way to express the texture size it uses).

looking good. i think you should use the first pose you had with the main character and then the creatures flying over him, but thats just being nit picky. i was gona ask you if your using maya and what kind of light setup do you have? cuz everytime i render in mental ray maya, it always gvies me this blurry desaturated look. you lighting is looking very clean.

i like the first pose too, but after consulting with some people i decided it is not the best angle ( most of the character is hiden). I'll use that pose for the beauty shot instead.

i'm using maya. to get rid of that blur, you have to turn off filtering for the textures. Also you have to check maya derivates in the mental ray settings, under Translation/Performance.

Really nice job on this character - he looks absolutely insane. It must've been a challenge to create 3 good looking characters with the limits you were working under!
