I just created a thread to annonce that I will fight for cgtalk.
My character is not yet clear in my mind. Iam still brainstorming and looking for some references.

I just know that it will be an alien invoker.
''antranik'' this name is armenian and its mean ''first-born''

Here we are.
The head is a little bit more clear in my mind.
It will be an alien with two hugh horn who join up with a ball (or may be a VFX) on the back of the head.
Some part of the skull will be visible on the face and the back of the head will look like a firefly abdomen...

Now i'll working of the body.

The idea of having the horns meet at some glowing object is really neat; I haven't seen that before. I also like the horny bits coming out along the jawline. Keep pushing it; I'm sure you'll come up with something interesting.

i don't like the colours of head. maybe try our team colour? red and black?
anyways, the overall shape is realy cool.

This is not bad at all! I would even say it's a great start man!
I like the way you posed the arms and hands, and your character looks very stable on his feet (which is not always the case for someone who does his first character!).
I know it's hard, but it's a good opportunity to learn and try new techniques , and I think you're doing extremely well so far. Keep it up!

Good start on the model. Looking forward to seeing you take if forward so I can provide a more complete crit. I can say one thing, perhaps some more preliminary sketches would be good to give as a better idea of where you're taking this. Good Luck and I hope the situation in Armenia improves.

Looking really good so far! I like the fact that you focuss on a pretty low level of subdivision to fix proportions instead of rushing into crazy details :)
I would just make the hands a bit bigger, they look small to me.
Keep it up bro!

It's coming along nicely. Can we see more of what you're planning to do with the guy. More in terms of the concept. I like his whole shape, everything goes together well. I especially like the feet and head. I think his hands are a bit small and unimposing. Maybe they're too slim, bulk them up maybe. Keep it up :thumbsup:

Thanks for the advice. I did it a little bite bigger. Tell me if you think it wasn't enough.
This day i worked on the head and try some idea to find something pleasant.
It's not finish yet.
I aim to bring out the bones like if they were horn. I mean the bones on his head look like a mask or a helmet.
In brief, i love bones :)

Hey Vince!
Nice progress on your sculpt! I think you shouldn't go that far on detailing. If you have the resolution for that at the end, I suggest you just create a bump map or use the Nvidia plugin in toshop to do that. This way you will have a 2d layer of your details, and that will be easier to make the diffuse/specular/normal... match to each other.
I like the bones on the chest, looks nice!
You should inflat the lips, they look a bit flat so far.
Hurry up, 2 weeks and few days left already! :D

Besides, when my wife came hone yesterday night, she asked me why i didn't have work on my character of the day...:sad:
It's hard to hear that after a hard day of sculting.
So i will stop to focus on details, all the more so i have not finish yet.

Looking good so far are you working from a concept drawing or are you just sculpting as you go along? What will your artifact look like?

I don't have a beautiful concept but i have an ugly one :) .
I don't draw very well so i didn't have spent to much time on it.
I did some quick research on paper before starting my character (i need to get a scanner to show you, mine is broken).
Otherwise i made a list of idee and i looked for photograph reference. But i stay free and some time i sculpt something just to try; like the tubes under the armpit. Most of the time i don't like what i get, but some time...:bounce:

For the artifact i'm not yet completely decide but i aim to some african's antique weapon.

I got my inspiration from several primitives african's weapons and for me it had the look of a hugh bottle-opener. :D

im not one for 3d so i cant offer much help there haha but I am one for design and I think this guy needs a blind fold! Or better yet! A visor Like on star trek or Cyclops! That would be sick, with just a thin line across it.
Also maybe some feet guards too, feels to naked down there ;-D

Thanks for your advice. I had imagine a blindfold at the begining, i liked the fact that the character didn't have to see for the fight, better than this he saw you in a different way , but on the other side the look of a character is really importante. And i decide to show is eyes (they will be glowing like fire).
However that may be, i don't have enough time to go back on sculpting. I'm in normal backing and retopologie and i have some troubles :sad: As you can see:

The retopologie doesn't seem to work when you do it on a subtool than you have created with "Extract" in subtool.
Precisely, retopologie operate and you can look the preview of the adaptive skin but if i active Tool>Projection>"Projection" and clic A: my adaptive skin explode...

If anyone can help me.

Oh my god! All the day fighting with retopology fonction in zbrush... I didn't live such an epic day since a while! :)
And all the day just for the arm...

1- the subtool after extracting a mask.
2- the retopology with Z_sphere.
3- the level 01 of the resulting adaptive skin.
4- the level 01 with his normal map in Maya.

Thanks for the heads-up on the extension. You do not look like you are having any problems with the 3d side to me at all. Great design, particularly the costume which I think is really strong. I'd like to see you tighten up the anatomy a bit, more definition in the arms for instance but that's a small point. Well done, I'll continue to pop in and have a look as you continue on the low-poly model.

Just admire your battles with zbrush and retopology :)
I preffered to model the whole low poly mesh in Max and then make a norm map in zbrush.
Just spend yesterday evening on chest modeling and the day before for the arm :)

it's really hard to get natural topology and the right proportions at the same time.

I learned a big lesson from this challenge: never do the Low Res mesh with zbrush's retopology :scream:
I think that for the future; i will do it in 3dsmax.

I did again the bracelet. And baked the diffuse map on the Low Res body: there is still no specular map.

The flork: I think your are right, there is a lack of bones on the leg. I probably will add it in the difuse map.
I'm still optimizing the complet Low Res. I'll aim to use all the 9000 tris:)

Wow, very nice! I love the fantasy feel of your design (reminded me of Pan's Labyrinth too), and i even like the matte of your previous renders.

I'm not that partial with too much shininess, though it's just a personal bias and of course your update looks great.

Anyone but 1,5,6. I like the idea of natural and a bit desaturated colors. I think 8 and 9 are my favorites. However, you might wanna play around with the value a bit, I think most color layouts would look better if they were bright enough to give some contrast between clothing and the torso.

Wow, nice progress here! #1 or 3 for me :) I would avoid the same hues than the skin for your fabric, just to have a more readable character.

I'd say 8 or 10, and 9 too, if the color did not look so similar to the skin. All in all, in my opinion, just not #1, which seems rather.. cliche to me (generic superhero/savior of some sort), and 5 and 6 because the colors kinda pop too much, driving the focus away from the character.

Each color gives Antranik a different persona too.. so it would also depend on what sort of character he is. The red for example, exudes a more assertive, slightly cunning aura.

Congratulations my friend! You did it!
The renders really turned out well, and the FX looks kickass!
I can't tell (in english :D) how much I was impressed by your work and perseverance during this contest. That must be your first character with the nm process, and you went through all the steps with success! You can be proud of your final entry!

And now that you are a Zbrush master, keep doing characters from time to time!
I hope you enjoyed this contest, don't forget to make another render for the posters:
