View Full Version : DWIII- 2D - NathanMckenna - Hood

02 February 2008, 03:10 PM
Hood is a Star Child, that means she's feisty and can get a bit hot under the collar but apart from that she's doing pretty well as the chosen artifact wielder.
The Star Children, though sounding like a cartoon for 6 year olds from the 80's, are actually a kick ass race. Created by the stars themselves they are the only sentient beings that can live on the suns of galaxiesí.
Hood is able, with the most awesome protective power of the sun Glove, to wield the one and only effective weapon against the machines, The Sacred Sun.
The Sacred Sun is the most powerful star in the universe and it's force can be wrought only by the most perfect of Star Children.

Isn't that cute?

02 February 2008, 10:48 PM
Heeeeey nath, great concepts man.
I was just about to post a reply when you added the new images. I was going to say I'm realy digging the 2nd mermaid image. Her costume looks realy cool and unique. I like the extra long tail fin too. It would be cool to see how you can develope that further.
From the new characters, I like the Sprinter, Fizz and Hood. Can't decide wich is my fav.
Lets see some colour on the mermaid.

Greetings comrades, late starter here, just some quick ideas straight from the void of my mind.

Here's some thumbs I did for basic shape ideas, I really want to stay away from the classic "thug" warrior class type, so no Warlords.

The line up is as follows:

Class: Stalker
Haven't thought up much story or powers yet - help me?

Class: Stalker
This little creature is extremely agile and quicker than a fart in the wind. Sprinter needs a magical artefact, probably Gummy Bear juice - to make him faster than light or something, "HA! try and stop me now you advanced washing machines and coffee makers..."

Class: Stalker
Fizz has a set of cool ass gems set into the palms of her hands - they look like little eyes and when she closes her hands she turns into gas, so no naked flames please, smokers, leave the building.

Class: Invoker/Clericon
Hood is wise and stuff, completing an extra hard soduko puzzle for him is like us doing the cross word in on the back of that batman comic you still have from when you were 9.
He has these little gems that do something cool - but what!!? HELP.

Class: Clericon
This guy is crazy, he looks really harmless but when he opens his mouth all he does is moan and moan his enemies to boredom, they give up and go home.
He has a staff with a magic light on the top that hypnotises his foes into submission... then he just walks off to moan about something else. ...typical!

I really like Sprinter but what do you think? who would you date?

Some run up sketches I did, just to get busy, I really don't like them though:

Thanks dude, I think I'll take Sprinter, Fizz and Hood a step further and see what happens there.
As for the mermaid, yeeeeah, I dunno, we'll see, I like mermaids, ever since I fell in love with Ariel - she's well fit. So maybe thats enough to keep me going with her, but in the olden days sailors were led to their deaths by psiren we should all learn from that story, yeh.

02 February 2008, 11:37 AM
nice thumbs

I like Hood best. Also Sprinter looks good, but that thing with the gems made me laugh too much.

I am courious what you'll add to them.

02 February 2008, 11:54 AM
Thanks Nikudy, yeah, hood is pretty cool but he doesn't talk much, only when it's very necessary. Thats why it's so hard to find out what those damn gems actually do.

Hey I love your entry for DWII - :scream: pretty kick ass, will you be doing something similar for DWIII?

02 February 2008, 12:09 PM
Those are some whacked-out stories you got going there! I love them! :D
They could all potentially be great, but the Sprinter is probably my favorite...made me think of the faun-creature from the lovely Brackenwood-films.

Other than that, the mermaid at the bottom looks rather wonderful too.

02 February 2008, 12:22 PM
Really love the first look on Sprinter and Hood. I feel Sprinter got something special going on :p Just can't figure out exactly what it is.

02 February 2008, 01:24 PM
Hi Nathan.

Great sketches, you have here, don't you? My favorites are the first, the huntress, and the 2nd mermaid. When I look to your huntress, she looks related to earth powers, for some reason. Maybe she could be "absorved" by the earth, to make easier her aproximation of her preys. She would just emerge suddenly, when the poor creature didn't had more time to react... It would be a good power. Or another, she could use her weapon to throw some big amounts of earth and rocks over her enemies, leting them tied up over the earth.

As you can see I'm a source of wacky ideas :P Huhahaha, don't mind. Keep it up, man, I'll be watching this topic.

02 February 2008, 06:06 PM
jramauri: Thanks for the compliments and story suggestions! I'm just about to post some mood drawings from reference that maybe mix your suggestion, in a visual way at least.
I can imagine Hood using some sort of staff to force/shovel huge amounts or earth in a forward sweeping motion! - more ideas are welcome guys!!

BluntPencil: Glad you like the ideas man and that animation you sent me is really cool and very similar to the movement I imagine Sprinter to have - thanks mate.

Shivath: I thinks its the ears on him, they're very big and cute, I think I need to look at hares for reference to take him further.

So I went image browsing to get ideas for Hood.
Now I think the gems should be super white bright powerful little bastards that blind/confuse enemies.
I really want Hood to be female because I like the idea of a girl kicking some robot ass and then maybe fixing her make-up because hey, killing robots is messy work guys.

I'm thinking about losing the hood because I really want to decorate the hair/head but what do you guys think?

02 February 2008, 07:23 PM
The drawings/storylines in your previous posts made me laugh so hard especially moan. I really like sprinter and hood but I'm really diggin the new hood. I liked her better with a hood though because it makes her more mysterious in looks and personality. The Asian headress looks good too. Your concepts are badass and I can't wait to see some more.

02 February 2008, 07:33 PM
Very nice concepts indeed, I like Hood the most I would say. Just looks like someone you really don't want to mess with and will never get close to unless you had some wicked powers as well. As for taking the hood off I would say you can leave it but the hood seems pretty big enough to also add accessories you may have wanted as well. Keep up the good work on the research as well nice job overall.

02 February 2008, 02:08 PM
Thanks people! Well, it looks like you really want me to keep that hood in somehow, i'll see what I can do.

After exploring the Hood character, it looks as if I really want to come up with a hybrid of Hood and Hunter.
Heres some thumbnails of shape ideas, after this I really need to disipline myself and commit to developing a shape, exploring variations.

What your name? Where do you come from? ...and what shape would you date and why?

02 February 2008, 02:25 PM
Stacy/USA/The hood hybrid in the far bottom left.

She appeals to me more because she simultaneously looks approachable and badass.

02 February 2008, 07:17 PM
errr... i'm married so no dating :deal:.

thanks man. i hope to do something nastier this year. I couldn't get a clear idea what to do but today things started to settle.

i think you shoud number your thumbs, they are so many and my english not that good. it would take me days to explain wich ones i like.

from the internet browsing post i think it's a good idea to show some skin like in the first image. you could show a bit of her breasts, the cloth beginning in the same place as the nipples.
the feathers could go on her staf, top end.
also you could combine the garment from the first image with the feathers.

02 February 2008, 08:02 PM
your work is a real inspiration nathe

02 February 2008, 11:44 PM
Darren White: thanks man, thats really cool of you to say that! :)
Nikundy: :scream: Awesome, thanks for your suggestions, I really like what you've said because I'm afraid of losing some sex appeal by completely covering her in a cloak, I'll have a go at some development ideas next. Cheers!

StacyOgie: Yeah, I quite like that one too but I definitely need to show off some skin. Quite the challenge.

Thanks for feeding my back everyone, next up: following Nikundy's suggestion.

02 February 2008, 12:27 AM
I'm loving the concept, reminds me of Kai from Heavenly Sword. Awesome design so far!

02 February 2008, 01:23 AM
Great sketches and ideas you got there man!Keep m coming!Wanna see more:D!
Happy war to you mate!

02 February 2008, 02:28 AM
Man, you've got some great ideas! Incredibly cool style and poses. I like the direction you're going...can't wait to see more!

btw...the dual umbrellas - sweet... :)

02 February 2008, 10:27 AM

Quick sketch with some crazy color. I really need to play about with costume ideas, I fear the creep of generic'ness. So if anyone has crazy ideas, please help me out, the crazier the better.
That is still meant to be a hood btw, right now it looks like a helmet.
and I think she needs hair showing too.

SashaP: Kai is hawt, thanks for the very well received comparison. I like your idea of the darkness seething out of your character.

OKMER: Happy war to you too buddy, such festivities!

Shintobe: Thank you mate, will you be entering DW3?

02 February 2008, 02:12 PM
nice to this this one in colour

02 February 2008, 02:15 PM
Sweet fruity colours mate, very tasty.

02 February 2008, 09:28 PM
Hi guys,

So I wasn't happy with the proportions and the pose, things need tweaking and i've been looking at her for too long, so please help with these 2 things before i go playing with costume ideas.

I also took some sound advice and a great idea from Kemkem ( and made the jewel into one of those contact juggling balls, so know her foes will be even more hypnotised and stunned - not just by her boobs.
so, any tips on proportion and pose?

love you.

02 February 2008, 09:47 PM
hey buddy, the new sketch looks great. the pose is realy dynamic, even though she's just standing there, and the hands look perfect. don't ever lie again about not being able to draw hands.

02 February 2008, 12:03 AM
Hey thanks Kem, I wouldn't have altered it had it not been for your keen eyes and criticism which is worth 1000 compliments, any day!

cheers buddy.

03 March 2008, 09:41 PM
I've been working on ideas for the costume, developing the head and shoulders in a hope that this might drive the rest of the design process.

what say you?

03 March 2008, 11:02 PM
I dig the shape of 6 and detail of 1...

03 March 2008, 11:19 PM
thanks Jason, yeah, I think I need to draw more of these. You're right, 6 has a strong shape but I need to show the face some more I think. ...hmmms...

03 March 2008, 06:21 AM
One of the best pieces for me! Congratulations!!!

03 March 2008, 12:43 PM
same as jasonjuta , 1 and 6 are the best.

seems odd that some of your sketches look so different in style. i think it is because for some of them you use photoreferences, and for me those are your strongest ones ( apart from the first hood :D ).

03 March 2008, 12:51 PM
nice concept style :)

03 March 2008, 02:11 PM
PowRiver: Thanks man, I like your painting technique.

nikudy: yeah, I agree with you entirely and it's something I'm always struggling with - style consistency, as is evident in this next jpg.

MikeyH: cheers! :)

Using reference from photos I am experimenting here with facial features, trying to add a bit of tiger animalism.
Although I like the drawing I will have to force myself to stylize and characterize her more, this looks too direct because I have a allowed the photo of the girl to preside - this should be reserved for exercise only.

03 March 2008, 10:52 PM
WOW! That's a lot of fine concepts  Your workflow differs a lot compared to mine. I tend to just continue the same drawing, until I get everything right. Then I maybe make some more detailed close-ups of certain elements.

By the way: I like no.6 :)

03 March 2008, 05:57 PM
Cool stuff Nave, love your later stuff. Makes me want to crack on with a 3D model.

You should come and work with me at Nexus.

03 March 2008, 07:15 PM
man, haven't posted in aaages. I got the basic shape of the head down so now I can work on the rest of her body and if I have time some finer facial features.
I plan to do a with hood / without hood version also. I guess she wears her hood to keep hidden from the ... mAcHiNeees...

I had trouble trying to visualise how she looks from the front.

03 March 2008, 09:17 PM
A few quick poses of Hood in outfit.

03 March 2008, 09:33 PM
Nice concept. The last image made me think of a project I made with C.P.Company. They make really cool jackets ( with built in goggels. I think it would be really cool if the glasses opd your character were built into the hood, which she folds down when she uses them.

Keep up the good work

03 March 2008, 10:40 PM
those ink sketches are gorgeous! I'm very jealous. i like the poses on your latest stuff too, good distribution of weight.

you're definitely hitting the post apocalyptic mark, but it could use a twinge more fantasy. perhaps a few tweaks to the clothing and some fantasy-like embroidery or markings?

it might be nice to have a bit more asymmetry too. there was a photo you showed earlier with a woman with some big feathers in her hair. something like that might make a cool shoulder decoration.

personally, i've never been a big fan of high heels on active characters that have to fight or run around a lot. don't get me wrong, high heels are incredibly sexy, but they have their place. perhaps something more like high heel boots? that way you could still get that nice arc of the foot, but it's a bit more functional.

here's a quick paint over with some reference. i can't wait to see the final entry!

03 March 2008, 10:49 PM
The one to the left looks real great. Much mystery in it.

03 March 2008, 02:11 PM
miscik: Thanks for the paintover, it's awesome to see someone actually have the balls to do that, it's a much easier way to communicate an idea or two, pictures say a thousand words.
You're right when you say "needs more fantasy", i'm thinking of using the logo as a tattoo around her navel - that could be pretty sexy. Aslo I like the idea of her left hand having a large glove, maybe to protect her skin from the intensity of the orb. and yeah, boots are better than high-heels and can sure as hell be just as sexy!

eEe: Hey, I like that idea so much i'm going to give it a shot - thanks man, and thank you for taking the time to send me a link, those jackets are ace.

MartinNielsen: cheers man, yeah, i really want to try and keep the mystery and still show a fair bit of skin, quite the challenge.

03 March 2008, 08:16 AM
yeah, paintovers can be touchy, but i felt that you could handle it. a lot of times i get a sense that a drawing could use improvement, but i can't quite put my finger on what it is until i have my pen in hand and like you said, it's much faster. i use them (along with sketches) all the time at work, but now i will definitely try and utilize them more in my on-line crits as well.

is there a way to post an image without having the little link box to the images? I'm kinda new to all this stuff. if someone could send me a message or a link i would greatly appreciate it!

also, thanks for commenting on my stuff and putting me in your top 3!! what an honor!

now stop reading this and get back to work on your next post!

03 March 2008, 11:14 PM
costume development (need some ideas, come on you creative types!!) ...and some fun with a robot.

03 March 2008, 08:31 PM
Some headwear devs here, I think i'm going to carry on with the top leather version, leather is always cool, even when its really hot:

03 March 2008, 09:01 PM
very cool concepts!

the only thing i see is the face, it has an undefined sex :P the body is clear but face cofuses

03 March 2008, 11:29 PM
thanks Daelon!

Yeah, the face is quite boyish but i'm hoping the final design wont be too androgynous. :D

04 April 2008, 09:20 PM
holy crap, i've got so much to do and about 32 hours left - thats enough right?

Life just gets in the way!

Heres my submission for the concept sheet.
Please tell me if you think I might get marked down for over loading the page with too much - looks a bit cramped but I really want to show as much as I can.

04 April 2008, 09:29 PM
Very neat concept sheet! Can't wait to see the final render. Anyway, how come my timer says its 18 hours 31 mins left? O.o

04 April 2008, 09:46 PM
i'm in London so I don't have to hand in until 5:00am sunday morning - don't know if thats a curse or a blessing. :hmm:

04 April 2008, 09:57 PM
Yeah, I was supposed to have +-31 hours left too. But it doesnt say the same on my personal entry page @ gameartisan. I am worried.. By the way, good luck to you mate, hope you finish it in time.

04 April 2008, 10:09 AM
That looks great nathe. No way is it too cluttered. i think it comunicates your ideas really well. i can't wait for the final render, good luck and DONT give up.

i'll expect to see you at your desk on monday passed out having not gone home, but it'll be worth it. she's an awesome character design and all think all the effort you put into her back story really helps bring her to life. plus the goggles rock!

04 April 2008, 10:55 AM
Sweet work! Very nice and lively sketching! And the character looks fresh so far!
Hope you can finish, hurry up, dude!

04 April 2008, 12:36 AM
awwww maaan, i knew this would happen! I took ages doing the model sheet and then rushed the final pose which means.. yeah... wait for it... it's in black and white!! ...dammmit!
ah screw it, its all about the participationism anyways, and i've had a blast! it's been really cool to get involved on ideas and stuff with friends.
Big thanks goes out to Kem, Darren and Jason for their arty critiques and back story suggestions.

Story Stuff:

Hood is a Star Child, that means she's fiesty and can get a bit hot under the collar but apart from that she's doing pretty well as the chosen artifact wielder.
The Star Children, though sounding like a cartoon for 6 year olds from the 80's, are actually a kick ass race. Created by the stars themselves they are the only sentient beings that can live on the suns of galaxies.

The Sacred Sun is the most powerful star in the universe and it's force can be wrought only by the most perfect of Star Children.

Isn't that cute?

Have you noticed I love using the words 'awesome' and 'power'?

I threw some red in at the last minute so they can't pull me by saying I only used black and white for my final image... clever eh? yeah, Cintiq here we come!!!

Well done guys, and thanks for the support, you lot rock.

04 April 2008, 12:42 AM
really authentic design. It's pretty hilarious you added red last minute just to commit the rules ;)

Great job on poses :D

04 April 2008, 02:11 AM
Congrats on finishing in time dude, was begining to worry :p
The lighting on your winning pose is ace.
My favourite is the naked pic, hot.
Your concept sheet is awsome, wallpaper worthy.
Good luck mate, now go get some sleep to regenerate your power.
Have you noticed I love using the words 'awesome' and 'power' too?

04 April 2008, 11:36 AM
brilliant job nathe, really inspirational. i absolutely love her.

04 April 2008, 07:48 PM
thats really cool man! She is sexy and dangerous :buttrock:
congratulations and good luck!

04 April 2008, 07:54 PM
Nice design. Good luck to you.

04 April 2008, 02:25 AM
I really like the poses of this babe! And you did a very good job on the lighting too. Bravo!

04 April 2008, 04:04 PM
Cool and original, not too over the top which always stands out for me. Like the star idea. good job man.

04 April 2008, 07:46 PM
Hey Nathan, cool concept and good work! Congrats and good luck with your entry! Cheers mate

04 April 2008, 12:09 PM
