Hello all, I havn't worked in 3d for a long ass time, and I thought this might be fun.
just a quick sketch and paint overlay.
After discovering an ancient rune in the volcanic mountains his people dwell, Thuzz gained the ability to control lava. He forged the artifact into a hammer he could use, and became a lead blacksmith in his subterranean metropolis. When news of the war reached his people, Thuzz helped lead a grand fortification of the city, sealing their civilization from the outside world forever. Thuzz remained outside the wall to continue his work but soon ran out of materials to build. He joined the war effort, crafting weapons and defenses for forces of cgtalk, and scavenging the battlefields for the remains of the robot enemy to take back to continue his endless fortification.

Nice concept! I think the hammer should have the glo as oppose to his hand though.
Keeping an eye on this one.

I agree with Dmonk I think the hammer should have the glow and the hammer bigger and the handles thicker so it looks he is the only one that can carry it.
Other than that great sketch, great character and GREAT START! Yours has a lot of potential and hopefully it translates well to 3d.

I also think that your concept has potential, and its a great idea behind the character. I sorta liked the lava hand arm. Maybe make that a design element that is throughout the character like maybe down his back and shoulders, or his feet and legs as well ya know? But yeah hes a thick character and I also think his hammer should mirror that. Beef up that handle to to totem pole size haha. Keep plugin away on him, but remember not to spend tooo much time on the concept because this thing is due April and you should factor in the re-learning time for 3D :\
Anyways, hes looking badass. Bring it home for CGS!

just another sketch of Thuzz I did today. Just trying to get the feel I want for him. I tried the larger hammer like suggested, which I like a lot more, and I thought maybe the bull/ox horns worked a little better for his character. Hopefully I can solidify this pretty soon, because Im gunna need a while on the model....if it ever gets that far :)

he looks awesome! I hope you manage to take it all the way to the model, if not you have a really strong entry for the 2D part of the contest. I think at this point, he needs those tats that are beveled into his skin. would look sooo good. Also, since his body type is the way it is, he really doesnt need many accessories or anything. Otherwise it might get to crouded. Great Job!

havnt worked on this much at all, but i just wanted to finalize the concept so I can attempt to learn 3d once again.

Very cool idea, and drawings.
I was thinking of having something similar to the lava/rock design, but yours looks great, I'll think of something else.
I'll keep an eye on this one.

So im going to start modeling today, and I wanted to post a few more quick thumbs I did to better understand his body type and horns and such.

Very nice images and poses.
I added a link in my signature, but my concept skills are no way near yours, or most of the people in this contest, so I'll be configuring the character as I model. I'm also trying to learn ZBrush enough to use it effectively.

He's becoming quite the charming fellow. and thanks for the kind words, made me feel good. i would watch his silhouette a bit, kinda play with posture and build just a pinch because if you squint at him hes starting to look like a candycorn from all angles. Unless your going for that then disregard my comment haha. But his getting very interesting and fun, hes going to evolve even more when you start modeling, so I would put the concepts asside now and save that for when you need a break from modeling :D. But I think you will find that Zbrush will really liberate you in your search for that perfect design.

Neat design so far. I like the proportions and the multiple, giant horns... And his expression, of course! Where are you going to put the team logo?
