I'm not sure how much time I'll have to work on this stuff during the next week or two due to a deadline at work...

I wanted to get started none-the-less so heres my first idea sketched out...

02 February 2008, 10:19 AM
great concept art! can't wait to see the further design =)

but are u going to put some hair on the model?

02 February 2008, 10:28 AM
Thanks Syncmax! I'm going to try to fake things like hair and cloth with alpha channels and such.

I'm also still thinking about how to show the power of his artifact weapon. I'm leaning towards void. I think I might be able to put something inside the ball, that is if I do decide to go with the ball and chain.

Im also thinking that instead of representing void with a glowy effect, it might be better to go the exact opposite and make it dark and subtractive... it would be nice to somehow indicate that when this thing smashes into the head of some machine or living thing it would suck the life and energy right out of it. It's hard to make magical items without maxing out on the cheese meter :) I'll keep thinking about it...

02 February 2008, 01:21 PM
Looking hot Tammy :) glad to see you are posting too! I am really looking forward to seeing your shaders and fx!

02 February 2008, 05:39 PM
I like where the ball and chain is going T. I definetly wouldn't want to tangle with this guy! Keep going cant wait to see some more.

02 February 2008, 05:44 PM
exellent concept !

02 February 2008, 05:50 PM
Hey. you did it fianlly, and it's really good.

Tip/I'm not sure it's your intentional or not, the head seems to be a bit big.

02 February 2008, 06:35 PM
Thanks guys...

What give's Dame I don't see your thread anywhere... I know you've been doing a lot of sketching, so you have no excuse.

Thanks Lee! I was going to ask your opinion on exactly that kind of stuff. The head used to be smaller and it felt a little weird to me so I scaled it up but maybe it was too much.

Heres a test with the head smaller:

02 February 2008, 06:49 PM
Cool. Much better,

But you have to care about the overall proportion when you do the 3D work

It seems to be a bit flat in terms of the shape, but otherwise, the design and mood and everything are perfect.

I love your artworks,Tamas. I hope you will be the one of winner. :)

02 February 2008, 12:29 AM
i second what paratrooper said. the smaller head is way better. post more!!

03 March 2008, 08:13 AM
Thanks for the advice... you guys are always right about this stuff.

So I'm very behind thanks to crunch time at work but looks like thats done for now... Time for some catch up...

Here are some silhouette doodles... cause all the cool kids are doing it...

And some further exploration into the unknown... I dont think I'll go with crow-girl but I wasted valuable time on her so enjoy... or something...

And this fella...

Not too satisfied with either... More sketches to come hopefully after some sleep and work.

03 March 2008, 01:57 PM
Hey T, the expression of the chick's face is wicked hot! I like the design, if you are going to go with it i would recommend more armour on her and on her crow. Maybe try some decorations. i can show you what i mean when i am back from toronto.

I think the old dude needs something to make him stand out a bit more. but its looking great!

my pick? chick on crow! there is alot you can work with for this one!

since you are behind you will need to catch up, so post every day! ;)

03 March 2008, 08:55 PM
I love the old dude, has a really distinct personality.

03 March 2008, 09:04 PM
Nice concerps so far - great amount of detail. I like the old guy too. What if you exaggerated him more, give him the arms (or arm proportions) of your first character? The wings sure strike a great silhouette, though. Good luck!

03 March 2008, 09:18 PM
VERY BRUTAL concept you got there dude. i like the old one

03 March 2008, 08:32 AM
Thanks for the feedback guys. I also kinda like the idea of the old guy but yeah right now its not thrilling me... I'll continue to think about how I can make it more interesting and other completely different directions I could go...

Today I started doodling a close up of a head variation and wound up with this creepy lipless bunny demon thing... not a big fan but gave me a couple ideas. I really want to find an alternative to the damn ram horns...

03 March 2008, 09:11 AM
Ok so in my previous post when I said "not a big fan of" I meant "hate"... the more I looked at that thing the more I cringed... so I stuck a snout on him... and an old-dude-beard! yay...

03 March 2008, 09:17 AM
concept style is intense!

03 March 2008, 11:29 AM
the ram horns totally work for me. you are such a liar, you can paint!

03 March 2008, 11:09 PM
Hey man!
Nice start.. The last head looks very good imo, Intimidating but still with lots of personality! I dont think that the bodys you've done hold the same quality as the heads. Give the bodys some more thought as you continue working on them, right now they lack curves and are pretty evenly big all the way from top to bottom, especially the first one. Keep it up!

Good luck!

03 March 2008, 11:41 PM
Nice sketchs, looks very promising!

03 March 2008, 01:03 PM
That crow-girl looks just too hot  I understand you don't wanna continue with it, 'cause it's not that unique. But work on the other concepts too :)

03 March 2008, 06:42 AM
Thanks for the crits. I tried improving on the bodies and combining the elements I liked...

I also kind of like the look of a longer coat, though I think its too much for this guy...

03 March 2008, 03:51 PM
He looks like the captain of the ship you painted in your avatar ;) Looking good so far, i like the long coat! Hey wait a sec........hes a space pirate!!!

03 March 2008, 05:37 PM
I like the ram horns personally, i would build off your comps so far, its lookin great

03 March 2008, 08:30 PM
Very eye catching concept, time to start modeling :)

03 March 2008, 05:41 AM
Well Ive fallen further behind due to more OT at work so time for some scrambling.

Started the model... worked on it here and there when I could... heres a WIP... It's obviously still missing a lot... like the back of his head and junk... I'm at around 2000 tris.

03 March 2008, 08:38 AM
excuses, excuses! Thats a nice start you got going there! be a bit more generous with your tris. 2.5 weeks left! go go go!!

03 March 2008, 07:40 AM
at roughly 4000 tris...

03 March 2008, 07:50 AM
sweet base mesh, he already has a lot of character. 5k more to go :)

03 March 2008, 08:06 AM
Very nice model. Good flow.

03 March 2008, 08:11 AM
Thanks guys. Got a little closer today... 5335 tris or something...

03 March 2008, 04:08 PM
Your character is really starting to come together, keep it up man!

03 March 2008, 05:21 PM
The mesh is looking very nice. I like that you're getting more complicated with it. One of the things I really like about your sketches is that really rough feel, all the hard edges and other things sticking oout all over the place. Your very first post was crazy with that (in a good way) and while you've toned it down a bit for your final concept, there's still that strong aspect to your art. I'd love to see your 3D pushed even more to capture that noise and vibrancy. You're definitely on the way with the shoulders but I hope you'll also have enough polies to push the other parts - the gauntlets, the legs, even the cape - further along that path as well with a really jagged rough silhouette. Is he still going to have the chains under his arms? I know they eat up a lot of polies, but they'd be great to see, even if they were flat sprites with alphas... or is that too crass and "last-gen?" (Hey, I make 200-800-tri models for a living, what do I know? ;) )

Anyhow, keep coming along with it, it's really taking shape. Great work!

04 April 2008, 07:51 AM
Thanks! I agree with your suggestions Walrus, I tried putting more protrusions throughout but it's easy to go overboard into super-goofy-land  I added what I could, but didnt have time to overthink it... I had to finish off the model and unwrap.

I will still add some alpha chains and see how they look... I still have ~1000 tris left so if I need more details anywhere I can add them no problem.

I went with a pretty classically shaped sword... I like that shape... I'll most likely go with the fire element and have it look like hot metal... The concept's too saturated at the moment but should give you an idea of what I'm thinking...

Onto the fun part... Finally!

04 April 2008, 08:41 AM
Wow, I love your concept for the artefact! It's more pretty than classically to me;)
Your character is great too, all the different parts give him a really interesting silouhette! My suggestion for some of the remaining polys would be for the toes. Since you can't bend his feet right now, it may constraint your winning pose?
I can't wait to see your textures, knowing your painting skills, it's gonna be awesome :) Have fun and use the remaining days as well as you can!

04 April 2008, 07:54 AM
Thanks Adrien. Good call on the toes, I'll definately add some edge loops there... I'll also probably add a few to the coat since it still seems a little jagged...

Anyway, did some Z-brushing...

I will probably do most of the normalmaps for the body and armour in Max and photoshop cause I don't have time to do it all in Z-brush... I'll probably zbrush here and there then blend it in with the rest...

04 April 2008, 07:59 AM
Hi. I lied... I did end up doing a quick n dirty zbrushing of the body... just cause its so darn fun...

I'm not really liking how the normalmap looks on the lowres... i'll try re-projecting tomorrow using alternate methods or some such nonesense...

04 April 2008, 09:58 AM
From what I can see your normal map just looks a little washed out - try duplicating it in photoshop and using the overlay setting to double the intensity (or some such method). Might help get those deeper relief areas your zbrush model has - great work though, 2 thumbs up :)

04 April 2008, 10:45 AM
Nice character, make more details.
Keep it up!

04 April 2008, 02:44 PM
Wicked prgress tamas. Gets ome sculpty ation in there eh? nice! what are you using to generate your nomal maps? in max, what is your material setting? Its good to see you back at it and getting tons done in a night.

04 April 2008, 04:03 PM
Impressive progress indeed! :)
As Kadeschui said, I would accentuate the normal, in max shader, or photoshop, or even Crazybump. Can't wait to see your painting on this guy :)

04 April 2008, 06:11 AM
Thanks for the feedback. Made a little more progress. Still a long way to go...

04 April 2008, 06:35 AM
ah! there it is! king metal shader guy! wicked progress for a weekend! loving his beard and shoulder pads so far. tight!

04 April 2008, 08:18 AM
I love the beard too! If you did the same white hair for the eyebrows as well, that would be terrific! :) And your choices of colors and contrast are excellent (I really don't know this science)!

It's a bit hard to read the horns though, but I'm sure you're going to define them.

Did you texture all in photoshop? Or tried to polypaint in Z for some parts?

04 April 2008, 04:30 PM
lookin rad dude, i supposed i like his beard too, but his boots and coat trim i like the best!

Great progress man

04 April 2008, 06:13 PM
Looks nice overall and your texture progress is amazing. From where is the render? realtime?

04 April 2008, 08:03 AM
Thanks guys... HakanPersson, I'm rendering from Max.

Made some more progress... still have some slight weighting issues that i'll fix later... Trying to get the texture blocked in then add as much detail as I have time for, theres a lot that still needs doing.

Still deciding whether to go with the straight on camera or slightly at an angle for the winning pose...

04 April 2008, 12:23 PM
wow man your character looks amazing! you did a wonderful job on this one! in my opinion i'd pick the one that he's slightly turned, and i'd also put up his left arm and bend it a little bit more to give him more of an action feeling and make him less stiff and more natural. you might also consider bend his knees just a little bit more to enphasize that. just my opinion though, just give it a try to see if it works. keep the great work coming, wanna see it done!

04 April 2008, 04:03 AM
Wow I think I succesfully submitted my sheets about 3 minutes before the deadline... My hands are shaking from scrambling... Here are the sheets... I obviously spent the most time on the first two construction, texture and concept ones I literally slapped together in the last minutes, thats all the time i had... thats why they suck so bad. But oh well... It's over.. finally...

Thanks to all those that commented and supported me!

04 April 2008, 04:40 AM
NIce, T! wow your beauty shot is very BEAUTY! i think i poop the bed on mine.
Looks wicked and the textures look tight! i love how you made it feel more then just a model.

ready for next year?
