View Full Version : DWIII - 2D - jasonjuta - Fungal Emissary

02-20-2008, 09:50 PM
Hi everyone, this is my first forum post, and my first competition. My character is a Vegetation Clericon, an emissary of the normally peaceful Agaricales fungus nation who has taken on the mantle of Agaricales Champion in Dominance War III. The first two images are my favourites, and the rest show some other concepts I played with. I need to make a final decision on the main design path and develop that further.

Comments are appreciated, thank you and good luck to all...
Jason Juta

Hey Jason, great concepts! I think I and J are my personal favorites so far. Can't wait to see some more.

02-20-2008, 11:29 PM
cool concept, great sketch! keep going:buttrock:

02-20-2008, 11:31 PM
Incredible sketches! I think I drewled a little after seeing these. I have no words to explain how awesome they are.

I like all your sketches a lot, but the one that stood out the most was the first one (L). It has a lot of character, emotion, its very detailed (maybe too much?), and is very elegant. If I could critique your sketch (L), I'd say that at first sight I saw that the leg joints seem very fragile to me, as if they could break.

You could also develop your smaller sketches like A or E, and maybe get some ideas along the way from them.

Overall I am extremely impress by your work man! Keep it up and good luck in the contest!

02-20-2008, 11:37 PM
fantastic! :D L and I are my favourites, really inspired! fungus theme makes me get a nausicaš-feeling :) cool to see another vegetation soldier under the same banner! ‹7 I didn't quite manage to implement the element very strongly in mine yet but yours is really fullblown! and totally fitting.
mine has tree-elements so I guess he should keep yours on a distance though x®D (or are they healing fungal infections?? :D) the fans are a great idea for weapon/instrument! :3
I love the fine-textile-ornament:like details! imagining one of these with detailed gritty normal, color and spec maps seems totally awesome :) which colours and materials do you have in mind?

02-20-2008, 11:43 PM
cool concept :)
wouldn't want that fungus hanging om my wall tough :P

02-20-2008, 11:50 PM
Hey Jas,
Glad you joined the competition. My favourite concept is L, very original. I look forward to you developing it further.
Good luck mate.

02-21-2008, 10:23 AM
Thanks everyone, this is very encouraging. I'll play with the other designs, but I've got to admit L is really speaking to me, it looks a bit like a knight, where I was worried the other designs were too priestly and weak-looking. I'm trying to also keep to gender-neutral designs - fungus people wouldn't need that...I'm also trying to bring in a full range of the unusual curly, spongy and odd mushrooms and fungi, which is allowing the interesting baroque details.

erik_j (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=172782) vbmenu_register("postmenu_4960435", true); - thanks, Nausicaa is one of my favourite movies of all time, and I didn't even think of it! I have a fairly good idea about what direction to take it in terms of colour, very beautiful and glowing colours like you see in fungus, coral, tropical plants. I'll have to develop the detail too, make sure it's not too much - although some colour and contrast decisions may help to knock some of the detail back.

02-21-2008, 10:58 AM
Hi Jason, these are vegetastic, quite scary yet still tasty.
My favourite is (A) - I like the possibility of him not having a head at all - maybe he comes from a world without heads and they all have to wear helmets and pretend to have heads in order to be accepted by the other worlds.

Do (A)...! Do (A)...! Do (A)...!

peace out.

02-21-2008, 12:24 PM
Woohoo..nice detailing man! i love ya strokes too..very organic.

Wow, so original and artistic! I like L with the fan but also the staff of N. I also like J a lot, it looks like it's bent from old age!
Great concepts, extremely professional! keep it going!

02-21-2008, 03:17 PM
Kickin concepts! I think N is my favorite, but the detailing so far for L is beautiful - Will definitely be keeping an eye on the progress!

02-21-2008, 07:58 PM
Hi! Good set of concepts, i like "L", but my thoughts its to work more with weapon, its not good acceptable under this char, but creature by its own super! Go on pal:thumbsup:

02-21-2008, 10:30 PM
Hi, here's my current design for the war fan artifact. I'm afraid I have a pathological need to try something different, and the fan appeals to me - good enough for samurai, so good enough for me ;)

Abstractcore, you're right about the joints looking weak, I did worry about that...I'll try to solve that.

nathanmckenna, don't think I'll take (A) any further, but I did clean him up just for you ;)

02-21-2008, 11:00 PM
wow, Jason, thanks man, thats awesome. I think you should roll (like bread roll) with this, but yeah I guess it could be a "carrot on a stick" situation, though to me it's clear as an onion skin - I think there is mushroom for development here.

lettuce see what happens.

(maybe you need to work in to the chips more, i mean hips.)

g'g'g'gangsta, gangsta.

02-22-2008, 04:29 PM
jason, you deserve 6 stars but they only have 5.

02-22-2008, 04:32 PM
I'd say L is my favorite, but I suggest you just make them all LOL

Great start, good luck!

02-22-2008, 08:10 PM
In the begining, I thought you might want to do it in 3D ! This "D" head is calling the zbrush.
Really nice stuff, "weapons" designs are very interesting.
My favorites are K and A, and I like the B dress.

02-22-2008, 08:39 PM
wow I love where this is going! great ideas here.

02-24-2008, 12:38 AM
Love his mystical corel/fairy look you design! Awesome job so far!

02-24-2008, 08:40 AM
Im a fan!

02-25-2008, 10:36 AM
eager for an update :) last stuff was totally great!

02-25-2008, 08:06 PM
good job mate,

i'm a fan . fnar fnar

02-25-2008, 10:19 PM
Thanks folks, here's a front and side with some adjustments and issues sorted out. The 'tentacles' are actually poisonous spore bulbs used for defence.

02-25-2008, 10:30 PM
Damn. Now I'm scared. This is really looking good and I can't wait to see what you'll turn it into. If the ink and pencil sketches are this good... He seems a bit stiff in the shoulders but that's nothin'. I love it.

02-26-2008, 07:03 AM
This concept inspire me!

02-26-2008, 07:09 AM
It's great to see something different, this is what I'd call a great concept . . . it's different from all the others. Love the fan idea, thats inspired. Can't wait to see this progress.

02-26-2008, 08:47 AM
These sketches are concept gold! I love the quality of your line and I am pleased to see that you are describing form and texture and function. Nice work! I will be watching this one!

02-26-2008, 10:27 AM
Hey buddy, really refreshing to see something so original, the design communicates fungus very well. I'd hate to have to sit next to this guy on the tube, but then I guess a lot of people on the tube really do smell like like they're growing mushrooms from their undergarments.
I love the attention to detail and I can't wait to see some colour.

02-26-2008, 10:32 AM
Great concept but I think the head looks too humanoid for my taste. I think if you break up the head shape some more it would increase the strange and original feel of the character. This is definetly more orginial then most of the other stuff I've seen so far.
Keep up the great work.

02-26-2008, 12:17 PM
nice! also think the new face is too human though. really liked the alien look of the fungusman head :) also will you be keeping the fans? they were great.
about those joints.. how will they work though? like literally a ball joint? and the ball is in there? can't see him bend those joints really.. better consider before you skin him :)

02-26-2008, 05:24 PM
Great concept....fantastic design:thumbsup: , just I think that the arms looks a bit short

02-26-2008, 09:19 PM
Thanks for all the compliments and suggestions. I didn't intend his (the character doesn't have a gender, but saying 'him' is easier) head to look more human, so below is a more detailed study showing the structure.

StacyOgie, thanks, I only use pencil and use levels in Photoshop to make the lines darker.

The drawing also includes a more detailed study of the joints, I think technically they will be ball joints. erik_j, no problems with skinning since this is only a 2D entry ;).

Yes, he will definitely be using the fans as his artifacts. I'm also moving his knees foward so his legs aren't quite so bent - it looks a bit awkward right now.

Maxter, thanks, his arms are pretty much a normal human length, but I think they might look short to you since he has two joints, higher and lower than the location of a normal elbow.

02-26-2008, 10:16 PM
This is inspiring, to go into research on how his joints look and work... amazing. Cheers to you mate.

02-27-2008, 02:03 PM
its coming on really well. can't wait to see some colour on this character

02-27-2008, 02:20 PM
Love the design and how detailed you made your concepts. Really inspiring.
Makes me want to go further with my sketches too.

Subscribed! :buttrock:

hya, Jason. Good idea on your concept! Iīm plugged on it.
good luck

03-03-2008, 10:52 PM
Thanks for all the feedback, here are my final designs for front, side, back, head and the fan artifact. Looking forward to doing the colour image! :)

03-04-2008, 03:47 AM
Really nice work so far, Jason. I love your concept and the detailing is fantastic. My main crit would be that, for such a bizarre and interesting character, it seems odd that his overall proportions mimic a human's so much. Some of your earlier sketches pushed the proportions a lot more, but the one you settles upon has more or less human-standard arm and leg lenths, head size, etc. But that being said, I'm really looking forward to soo where you go with the color treatment. Good luck!

03-04-2008, 06:18 AM
Awesomeee! I liked the shapes and details!
Good Luck!

03-04-2008, 08:01 AM
Wow! i see from my last visit to your thread you have did a lot of great sketches and conepts, my congrats pal!

03-14-2008, 08:11 PM
looking really awesome

03-16-2008, 02:57 PM
Yo, where are you???

03-18-2008, 08:25 PM
Hey StacyOgie, thanks for your concern ;). I've had some interruptions, but the final painting / action / beauty shot is going well. I'm not sure if I want to post a WiP before it's finished, but I'll see how it goes.

03-28-2008, 04:04 PM
Here's my final painting of the character. I think I achieved my personal goal of doing something unusual and using fairly bright natural colours and effects. :)

As a reminder: Clericon. Artifact: Pair of Vegetation war fans.

03-28-2008, 04:26 PM
FINISH ALREADY! you most feel completly in peace, your character is looking great and the colors are just awesome now all I can say is good luck

03-28-2008, 10:38 PM
Beautyful. Love your sketches. Really hot pencils. And your colors too. Really nice.

03-29-2008, 04:50 PM
nice one jase,

looks great. fingers crossed for top 10

03-29-2008, 10:22 PM
Really nice work on the colors Jason. They're way out there, not really common choices, which suits your character perfectly, as he himself (itself?) is really original and unique. The purple glow is a nice choice as it balances the greens and oranges, but it feels like it would be nice to bring some more bounced purple light elsewhere into the image. It's the only light source we see in the scene, and it would be nice to see some of that violet light bouncing around in the scene more and illuminating parts so it doesn't just look pasted in: What abut some purple/white rim lights on the left side of the emmisary? Or some more of those purples touching his legs, arms and rear tentacles? Or bouncing off of the big red flowers in the background?
Anyhow, just an idea. Good luck putting together the last of your sheets!

03-31-2008, 07:45 PM
Thanks for the compliments and suggestions. Michael, of course, I should have noticed I forgot to put in lights from the fans - silly mistake! :D Here's an update:

03-31-2008, 10:13 PM
Beautiful work Jason. I've made you my desktop wallpaper. My favourite bit is the subtle lighting, that small but sharp backlight. Love the shoulder too, all very evocative of victorian fairy painting which i love. He is very weird, a tad creepy and that all works a treat. Maybe a little too weird for the likes of Blizzard's taste but hell originality is priceless. I'd like to see his home now and the character who sent him. And the fungal children, the fungal fan designer, hell I want to be cast under his spell, maybe I have been.

03-31-2008, 10:53 PM
Oh yeah, that's what I was talking about! I think that ties it all together quite nicely. Good work!

03-31-2008, 11:08 PM
nice work really good choice of colors there. the design is also top notch

03-31-2008, 11:41 PM
This is great Jason, I realy like it. Love the detail on the shoulder, and the colours have a real fantasy fairy tale feel to them, although he looks a little freaky:), I like the contrast of those elements.
I hope you do well.

04-08-2008, 07:42 AM
Hi Jason,

This Character has lot's of new and original design, I like a lot the body type and his colors, I am also somehow a bit confused in were does he itís trying to hit though? But itís not important at all, just wondering? Great to see all your work! A good character that shows lost of potential for this war!

04-11-2008, 03:17 PM
Are you finished yet, any more to come? Well done on so many beautiful pieces. No suprises for me though, always known you are damn good.

04-12-2008, 10:25 AM
That image rocks jase, definitely one of the most original by far. i think the 'doing the opposite' approach we spoke about initially has really made this piece unique.
I still think my dude could whip yours in a one on one tho' mate!

04-12-2008, 07:56 PM
Cheers guys, here's the final pieces I submitted. Now we all have to worry until the judging is done! :D

04-13-2008, 01:02 AM

good luck and may the fungus be with you!

I'm knackered, see you soon baboon!

04-13-2008, 02:06 AM

Wow.. Simply stunning! Good luck mate!

04-14-2008, 07:14 AM

04-18-2008, 12:27 PM

04-19-2008, 11:55 PM
WOW! The colors are awesome and your piece by far is is one of my favorites in the competition. I missed too much; definitely an award-winner. Good luck!
