View Full Version : DWIII - 2D - Rezeroth - Garabath
02-20-2008, 09:33 AM
Yo guys..Here's my rough concept of a undead warlord.. It's definetely the typicaly badass demonic boss. I think the head looks like diablo, so am not sure if this guy is gonna be the final one but i'm working on other concepts aswell. Just to warm up and throw all generic stuff out now.. More to come soon.. Everyone has such great entries it frightens me actually.. But anyhow, TO WAR!!
02-20-2008, 11:04 AM
Yeaah!! Way to go Rezeroth!!! Your design is just awesome! :D Can't wait to see more other concepts from you! I like the head on the right side of course, the two that are on the right side of the picture.
02-20-2008, 11:07 AM
You sound firmiliar? do you know HammyWammy? LOL!!! rezeroth is my conceptart.org nick...yar it's lame i know..TT__TT what time is it now? Not sleeping? Too hardworking huh you?
02-20-2008, 11:32 AM
Very nice concept :) , I haven't seen many undead concepts in this challenge.
02-20-2008, 01:15 PM
great proportions man! massive and scary.. looking forward to see what comes next!
02-20-2008, 01:16 PM
Damn I love the design overall and the contrast is great too. Lets kick some ass, cheers.
02-20-2008, 01:48 PM
Great concept, his shapes are pretty well distributed. I think his torso could be a bit longer, though.
nice concept... good luck!
02-20-2008, 02:06 PM
Thanks guys! appreciate the comments and i'll definetely look into them.. We are gonna take the trophy home this year guys!! CHARGE!
02-21-2008, 12:08 PM
Here's my third rough concept.. i noticed there's a certain trend going on with my sillohuetes.. gotta work on that.. Not much idea for my artifact yet though..
This on was inspired from some chinese opera photo i shot qute some time ago..
02-21-2008, 12:24 PM
wow! great concepts!
02-21-2008, 12:32 PM
LOL thanks :D Nice gallery you have..pretty wicked 3D sculpting man!

Impressive concepts mate!
02-21-2008, 02:21 PM
Very imponent! I like the winged version in Character Design Rough 2 and the weapon of C.D.R. 3.
02-21-2008, 03:09 PM
WOW... i like all of it.. but i like the 3rd 1 most.. feels very armoured and 'powerful'.. but if u add the head of the 1st and 2nd would be better ( more fully armoured).
lastly i like the name of it.. HAHA Rez ^^ ... u have my support.
02-21-2008, 04:10 PM
impressive poses u draw
Great concepts! I like the last one, just not the flags. The first ones reminded me a bit of last year's winner, although less mechanical, of course!
02-21-2008, 08:01 PM
Your sketch #3 is awesome!!! Keep going!
02-22-2008, 04:37 AM
Thanks for the feedbacks guys!! Rez, thanks for the support :D Bro!
DrFx- I know exactly what you meant.. All of em has that sort of sillohuete going on..Really trying to work on that too :D Thanks!
Here's a few thumbnail exploration from previous sketches..Trying to find something new in all that madness overlayed :D CHEERS!
02-22-2008, 04:38 AM
Oh oh..here's another one..
02-22-2008, 05:25 AM
Madness is right. That mirror stuff is a good idea. I may have to try that sometime. I'm diggin' your sketches. Love the flags, keep the flags.
For what it's worth ... the first concept reminded me too much of Bigun (http://www.gameartisans.org/dominancewar/spotlights/taehoon/taehoon1.htm).
I do see something really nice however, in mirrored thumb experiment 2.03.
dude you rocks! they looking all so great! i have no idea whats the best!
02-22-2008, 07:19 AM
cool concept man, loves the head!cant wait to see how it's done later.
02-22-2008, 07:27 AM
For what it's worth ... the first concept reminded me too much of Bigun (http://www.gameartisans.org/dominancewar/spotlights/taehoon/taehoon1.htm).
I do see something really nice however, in mirrored thumb experiment 2.03.
I second that.
The mirror sketches are really cool to let work the imagination.
02-22-2008, 01:00 PM
I think i gotta create something fresh the next. All this over detailed thumbs are blinding me, Maybe should have just blacked em out.. This piece is a composition of a few parts that i like from other thumbs. 02 Has shorter legs compared to the others. 03 is just like 01 but trying the flags on him, and 04 has a different torso and head.. Hmmm... Any comments? I wanna design a fat dude next..Hopefully, unless i have a better idea. :D Would prolly colour some roughs too. CHEERS Folks! that's all for today.. Lets hope that i get a nightmare tonight and some cool designs pops up in my dream. Anyway, oh ya is it a MUST to have a description or a story of your character? I noticed that lots of ppl have that..
02-22-2008, 02:38 PM
hie rez!! l;ooking good!!! all the best with ur work!!! anyway... some of the mirror roughs reminds me of transformers.. especially megatron haha =)
02-22-2008, 03:32 PM
awesome, i love your character design.
02-22-2008, 03:52 PM
nice thumbnails liked ur mirrored skills
02-22-2008, 04:09 PM
 BRILLIANT! loving the look and feel of this so far! More please!
02-23-2008, 02:47 AM
Thanks guys! appreciate the comments.. More to come :D
02-23-2008, 02:54 AM
initial concepts looked a lot like last years winner.
Think you're heading away from that now which is good.
02-23-2008, 03:32 AM
As always, you have my support. KEEP ROCKIN' DUDE! :3
02-23-2008, 06:36 AM
whoa.. gosh.. your sketch... are strong
the porpotion kinda remind me of transformer "megatron"
hehe im so glad im not the only Malaysian in this war xD
02-23-2008, 07:08 AM
Man, this is great stuff. Very interesting to look at.
I think the only criticism I'd have is that it's currently suffering from a bit of Transformers syndromeŚlots of cool details that, when viewed from afar, look a little too noisy. I think getting a few bigger shapes like you have on the hands into the rest of the body would push this from "great" to "holy awesomesauce, Batman!"
02-23-2008, 07:43 AM
Reminds me of the Escaflowne Mecha Design. Great detail on this, so much to look at, the orthographic views must be amazing!
02-23-2008, 07:46 AM
ColdKodiak- Yes.. i agree.. im trying to get out of it!!LOL! thanks man!
Calyx - Where's your thread? How did you find mine? lol!! You know you have all my support too kkk!! POST!!!
YongWei- LOL! m'sian,.. great to see you too though i dont know you :P Good luck to you too man!!
Swizzle - Thanks man.. very helpful stuff you mentioned. :D the thumbs are definitely over killed with details but i'm still searching for great sillohuetes so,..bah the details..though it does help suggest ideas to me for detailing still LOL!!
Say..Must our characters have legs? o__O
02-23-2008, 08:30 AM
Cool exploration of concepts! Your most recent image is ace. Legs are overrated! Brilliant stuff.
02-23-2008, 08:44 AM
Cool last rough! I think without legs its even better:)
02-25-2008, 05:04 AM
CG-Gordon - Thanks.. though i still think he looks very generic. Looks like "i've seen him somewhere before" that sort. T__T working on it.
Alex Novo - Yea i kinda like that idea now.. Let's see how it goes.. Good luck to all you guys and thanks for dropping by! :D
02-25-2008, 06:34 AM
cool concept buddy.keep it going.Looking forward for more.
would follow ur thread.
Lets destroy the enemies.:bounce:
02-25-2008, 07:41 AM
Now thats huge:eek:. Only god can save the rival enemy forces from this huge undead warlord.
Beautifull concept:). All the best Dude:thumbsup:
02-25-2008, 01:17 PM
Great concepts. my personal favs are the first one and the legless one you just created. The spine or tail seems to be a bit less aggressive compared to the overall design. the side head profile also reminds me alot of the robots in Evangelion (not that its a bad thing it just reminds me of it).
as for your first concept i think its totally original! besides the overall look of the silhouette that has slight a reminder of big gun its a great design! I hope you will make a really BIG axe for it ;D
best of luck with DW3!
02-25-2008, 01:37 PM
thanks guys! Jicks! thanks for the comment, appreciate it! Good luck to you too man! Alright some stuff here that i just finished. I'm still exploring possibilities and am trying to make things look a lil more original. Trying trying... Anyway, enjoy!
02-25-2008, 01:37 PM
Looks like some sort of error.
02-25-2008, 01:39 PM
I dont know about you guys but this thing freaks me out.. This is so darn Unoriginal! (is there such a word)
02-25-2008, 02:28 PM
It's so hard to be 'original' these days, everything is already done. I like your guy so far though. I like the no legs too. Like a big chunk of floating demonish armor read to rip through anything that gets in it's way!
02-25-2008, 08:52 PM
love everything! Yeah, it's the typical demonic warlord guy, but still very strong stuff! :)
I am watching!
02-25-2008, 08:58 PM
Hey man, beautiful concepts..
Great concepts!
02-26-2008, 12:11 AM
Nice stuff! I really like the angles you're getting in that profile view. It's very "Escaflowne" (from the anime series) which is awesome since that series had amazing designs. The flags and tassles are a great touch too.
I'll be checking this thread!
02-26-2008, 01:38 AM
hehe, move your mirroring thing!Lots of space for imagination that way!
02-26-2008, 02:18 AM
wow!your design is excellent ! I love it so much!
02-26-2008, 03:25 AM
saa-weet concept! U r among the frightening one on my list.. my character design will pussy out when it sees your character,, haha,,,, sure am glad we r in the team
02-26-2008, 05:03 AM
Your concepts are fantastic so far! I'm really impressed with how thorough you're being too - I'd have stopped at character concept 3 (which I love) and just gone from there... but you keep on going. Awesome work!
02-26-2008, 06:00 AM
Lol..how can i not know, hmm? ;) Keep rockin'!
I do have ideas in mind, but before i have some things to show i thought of holding back a thread first. Trying to not be over ambitious with uni work atm too @_@
Btw, that legless character really reminds me of that floaty silhouette thing we did for In-House :3 That reminds me.. Tell you in mail or something :D
02-26-2008, 10:11 AM
That is such a cool image. Experimentation can always help to spark ideas.
02-26-2008, 03:53 PM
eMysfit - Thanks..Yea i suppose. Nevertheless i'll still try to squeeze something more original.. it's important for myself too :D
Hideyoshi - Thanks dude. Cam t wait to see more of your stuff too. Nice works on DA btw :)
JediHindu - Thank you Vinod, you have awesome stuff too.. you and autodestruct. :D
OKMER - Thanks man.. I find it helpful and time saving... it works for me :)
damdischink - LOL! c'mon man. No way.. Keep producing those badass stuff!! LOL!
walrus - Everyone has they're own way of working so..yup, im gonna be exploring a while more since there's still time. I really want it to be my best ^^
calyx - I'll be waiting k!.... *back to rockin
nathanmckenna - Yup...thats the purpose.. but some are just a mess LOL!
Thank you guys for all the comments and critiques.. ALL the best to you guys too man! CHEERS!!
02-28-2008, 06:36 AM
More roughs..heads this time.. :D
02-28-2008, 08:43 AM
First head has a more refined character nuance to it. But it doesn't read as instantly as the second one.
02-29-2008, 04:39 AM
ColdKodiak- Yea.. I agree, he first one is having too many shapes overlapping each other.. Thanks!
Hmmm. more roughs.. :)
....one word "wow"...
i'll come back fro more constructive crit, for now, i just love ur design~!
03-11-2008, 04:00 AM
Head design..some less exaggerated, hmm.. trying out the colours too..
03-17-2008, 12:53 PM
Okay, here's what i've been working on lately. Been dead busy with my office work so i dont have much time to work on the war, but i pretty much got into this direction. Quite happy with some stuff. So i still gotta work some things out (like fucntion and stuff) I decided to design this undead dude like wearing a Huge massive organic suit with large arms. He will still be the head but his regular arms will extend far out and joins the elbow joint of the massive suit arm.. (its gonna be tough if its gonna be done in 3d especially if rigging is concerned) Oh well, enough rambling.. C&C are welcome, always :Dhttp://features-temp.cgsociety.org/gallerycrits/120647/120647_1205757630_large.jpg
03-17-2008, 12:56 PM
Here are more detailed shots.. Yet to design his artifact and weapons in detail.. Hopefully soon, with rough colours... Time's running out!!!
Great updates!! this rough design is very good. ^^
03-18-2008, 03:03 AM
ldgree - Thanks man..Loving your stuff too :D
03-18-2008, 03:30 AM
This is looking really wonderful! I hope you have enough time to complete it. In this latest sketch, you've simplified the sword some. I really liked its shape in the previous sketch more - the shapes on teh top echoed the forms on Garabath. As for him, he looks terrific. My only suggestion would be to possibly lenthen the torso a bit. Right now it seems somewhat squashed. But anyhow, still great. Good luck!
03-18-2008, 07:27 AM
Super awesome especialy that last finished looking one with the huge draping cloth and scull head with the strait back objects and the evil looking brow so sweet man .. especialy love the arms and how the torso conects to the body .,. top notch top notch.
03-18-2008, 08:44 AM
sweet drawings man:thumbsup: luv the tail and the helmet part. i have one suggestion though, it feels as if he is losing the silhouette of the head to all the crazy designs around the shoulder and torso. maybe have his head sticking out more? anyways, this is badass work, keep it up!
03-18-2008, 11:01 PM
Fantastic designs... there are a lot of original and creative ideas here..
03-19-2008, 12:22 PM
Walrus- Ei thanks for dropping by. Yea the torso. I gotta agree with it being to short.
QuantumPixel - Thanks man..looking forward to seeind more of your stuff too :D
Elhaz - Yup, agreed on the head. I initially wanted to give him like a dragon head and neck sort of design so that his head could pop out more so that the sillohuete would look better. But i thought that would make it look rather beast like... Thanks anyway. Appreciate that :D
Maxter- Thanks for dropping by :D
03-19-2008, 05:00 PM
Just, freakin good!!! Your sketches rock man!!!
My Dominance War III
03-22-2008, 05:37 AM
kenzoabeki-Thanks man..your stuff rocks too.
Updates.. Rough color on rough character. Trying my best to stick with CGS's colors and i must say its not that easy. Time is really running out, and hopefully i could pump out the orthographics for Garabath ASAP and get started with more finalised and detailed renders. I have yet to finalise the head still. Mainly the detailing, any ideas guys? :D Im really trying and hoping that my chracter doen not look too typical/generic. Im trying to stay away from making him look like the ussual big buff armored guy (no offence) but its just what i want to go for right now.. CHEERS guys!!
03-22-2008, 05:38 AM
Oh and here are the heads.. BTW i think Aeonseraph made apretty kick ass logo for us here in CGS.. A toast to you bro!! :D
03-22-2008, 05:45 AM
I really liked the one at the top page 5 with the banners on the shoulders and the cloth hanging down in the floating pose with the tail, If I could go back I would think that building that style of character would be the direction I would want to go.
its all looking really good tho, keep it up. 16 days left
03-23-2008, 09:14 PM
Great to see the true Rezeroth's flavor manifest itself :)
I like how it's going, because it really resonates your tastes and liking--and for the first time ever appearing before the eyes of the many artists around the world.
And hey, it's the black-red scheme too!
Hope things at PF has been well, despite being busy.. i'll see you in a couple of months!
03-23-2008, 09:18 PM
Garabath sounds very befitting for your hero :)
03-24-2008, 12:17 AM
cool design man!! i loved it, looks like it can beat an entire army certainly
03-24-2008, 01:29 PM
Calyx - Ei!... where's your entry? here? or which forum?? I cant find..T__T Time is running out!! Hope you're fine..
QuantumPixel - Never too late bro :D Thanks for the feedback btw..appreciate it!
bandro - I sure hope it does ><
More detailed design of the head to torso.. I'm working on the Orthogrphics now, and hopefully it's not too much of a pain. Oh, his um.. decorated pubic thingy should be the artifact that binds him to the huge organic arm suit thing.. I'm aware that it attracts quite a lot of attention but at this rate i'm not certain if it's a good or bad thing... o_O?
03-24-2008, 03:40 PM
wicked stuff, love everything! Great direction that you're taking!
The gauntlet and feet design is pretty fancy, keep rocking - hope to see this finished!
03-25-2008, 11:02 PM
*gasp* Its you! *worships*
Man, you are too inspirational for me to put into words. Really, thanks so much for your kindness. I've basically put everything into my folder of infinite drooling. But enough ass licking.
What I like most are your options without branching too far away from your main idea. Really great. Im following you, i mean your thread.
03-27-2008, 07:16 AM
I love five star stories style mecha..your design remind me a little about that.
it's just insanely comlicated thou.. :)
your designs are pretty intriguing me~
03-27-2008, 09:58 AM
Awesome style & design you got!
One question: "Are you a fan of Kazushi Hagiwara?"
When I see your drawings I'm very impressed!
03-29-2008, 09:06 AM
jingudyi - Lol.. Five star stories style, ya i like love those works. I find the designs very stylish and exaggerated >< Thanks for dropping by man.
Hydelloon- Hey there thanks for dropping by. No im not a fan of Kazushi Hagiwara. To be honest im not sure what are his/her works. But thanks anyway.. :D
Alright guys.. deadline is extended. Good thing coz i have lots of office work at the moment too T__T but i'll definitely finish this the BEST i can.
Earlier today i was playing around with some montage of smokes to see if i can find anything inspiring. Slowly i found myself immersing in this, um...craze of creating the "soul" for Garabath. I though it could just serve as part of the story telling here in my thread and not for any finalised piece that im gonna hand in (but who knows). I thought that creating his soul in smoke forms would be nice and it helps to suggest more about him being more fire-ish as i intend to make a fire weapon artifact for him.. So making him out of smoke would prolly be wicked. (i hope) Since the begining of the war, i knew i had to design something more than just a cool looking dude. He's gotta have cool details nontheless but the form and structure is really important. I'm trying to make it look timeless, meaning ppl would still be able to see or find something new each time they look at it for years to come or at least till before the next war.. Oh well, enough of rambling. All the best guys!! CHEERS! (BTW, his face is not very visible so maybe u guys could just fill in the blank in yer heads haha..)
03-29-2008, 06:47 PM
Heyyy that's a uber cool post, really loving the smoke effects. Garabath is pawning! Keep it up..would really like to see a 3/4 view though.
Me....I'll talk to you more in mail. But yeah..you can't find mine because i haven't any..you would be the first to know if i did. Heck load of disappoinment...crushing inside out.
03-31-2008, 03:34 AM
Never too late!! I'll be waiting then ><
03-31-2008, 01:00 PM
nice smoke effects.
03-31-2008, 07:01 PM
Some cool concepts, nice epic scale
04-03-2008, 10:34 AM
this is incredible.... You really made me feel so hard to breath now..
It is wonderful Malaysia haf such amazing concept artist like you.
I read every pages of the progress.. Each of the progress is really awesomely good.
Enjoy every execution you did to the character.
The more i surfed thru these thread. I am getting blur what sorta character is fit to this competition.
Btw, what is your studio working like?
Good job, man! Just too good to believe.!
04-07-2008, 04:49 AM
dinodog78 - Hey thanks for dropping by.. Glad you like em. My studio? Pretty good i would say. Lots of wonderful ppl here to work with and the environment is decent enough to make you wanna sleep at work..LOL just kidding.
Damn, ive not been updating for quite some time now. Im working on the final sheets now and hopefully i can finish them up ASAP. Planning to hand in everything on thurs or fri coz im afraid that the traffic might jam up on that day.. anywahow...Good Luck to all My CGS Bros and Sis!!! Cheers!!!
04-11-2008, 04:28 AM
ARGH! model sheet!!! No time no time...
04-11-2008, 06:32 AM
Oh god...you just reminded me of how little time i have left. I was still happily sketching *pulls hair
Yay to an update to Garabath! Though the orthographics are a bit difficult to read.. the profile view especially seems quite confusing.. perhaps either separate the arm, or give the body/arm more contrast? And for the front view for example, maybe you could make the cloth behind lighter to separate what is at the foreground and background?
The hand is interesting O.O All the best!
By the way...is it strictly a 1000 x 1000 px dimension for all the submissions? Can it be maybe 1000 x 800 or something of that sort? I've been looking around...
04-11-2008, 07:11 AM
Calyx- Yeap i'll try to fix all that..if i can squeeze in my schedule..my winning pose is still pending T__T.. i dont think its strictly 1000x1000px but i just want to be safe..but my winning pose is not..coz of composition. Dunno.
04-11-2008, 07:43 AM
There are max 1000x1000. so it mean that you can do 1000x700 or 700x1000, but not more then 1000px via both sides.
04-11-2008, 08:44 AM
cool stuff dude!! i wanna see more!!!
04-11-2008, 12:27 PM
I just refined the modeling sheet and hopefully things read better than before now.. Thanks Calyx!! :D
04-11-2008, 12:29 PM
Managed to squeeze in this Concept Sheet. Is more than 6 okay? Argh!! No time left!! My Winning pose!!
04-12-2008, 03:57 AM
Well as we all know, the war is coming to an end. Seems like another small chapter of my life had just passed but not empty handed. I learned and gained so much and i could never get this anywhere else or any other way. Being apart of this war was truly an honour. To fight alongside with everyone here at CGS its been rewarding not to mention challenging too..So I came to my end with the winning pose of Garabath. End of War.. I salutes to all Brothers and sisters that came this far together and achieve something more than what we thought we could.Let us pray for the lost souls that could not make it and let us all rejoice for the wonderful, priceless experience that we all obtained along the way... I hope that i could fight this war the next time along side everyone here aswell and with some new recruits then ;)..
04-12-2008, 05:00 AM
Suhweeeet finish!! You suddenly gave me a kick on my butt to go faster...
Garabath looks friendlier than i thought though XD He looks more 'alive' too, if you know what i mean. Got to get back to Aveolae now!
04-12-2008, 05:08 AM
Thanks.. LOL! dont have to feel obliged to comment on it yet. Make sure Aveolae survives the war.. No i did not kick your butt ^^..
LOL! friendly? yar.. it feels so.. Alive? yar? really? lol!!
04-12-2008, 05:09 AM
Oh, hey, you managed to get it all done. Nice work! It's all nice, but I especially like the model sheet - so clean and it showcases all the detail on his body and his great silhouette really well. Great job!
04-12-2008, 05:13 AM
Ay Walrus!! thanks for dropping by man! I really dig your final..the concept is really fresh and unique.. awesome man!! glad we are fighting this war on the same team.. *bows and salutes!
will definitely drop a comment on your thread later.. :)
04-12-2008, 05:24 AM
Yes!Great work and awesome character Rezeroth
In the winning pose the space between his left arm(for us) and his body is filled by almost the same color as his arm which makes it a bit more difficult to read.
Some parts of his body(his legs and esspecaily his leg near us, his arms) seems a tiny little bit less worked out as the central part of his body.
Maybe that's because you've used less outline here.
I like the way your outlines work with the colors and the fact for exemple you've used an outside-outline for the shoulders made him pop out more.
Maybe a subtil outside-outline all around him could make him pop out more.
That would be my 2 cents.
Great great work and another great warrior on our battlefields!!!
04-12-2008, 09:41 AM
great designs~ wow...cool sketches too~
04-12-2008, 08:59 PM
This is totally badass from beginning to end. Awesome!
04-13-2008, 12:29 AM
Great job there!! Wow, the details sure are INTENSE! The modelsheets seems a little overkill but the final picture, with the nice complementary combination of colors it did help a lot to define the details. Do you have a larger resolution of the model sheet? I really would like to see more details, especially on the head. : D I also think adding some particles aside from the glowing petals might help enhance the mood a bit, it looks slightly clean at the moment with just smokes.
Once again, beautiful work. Haha! You gotta do more works like this!!

Incredible work, man. Sorry for not comment before, but anyway, you it doesn't seem I could help in anything, your ideas for design and execution are fantastics. I hope you can stay among the winners in the 2d category. Congratulations for this quality job and for finishing your entry!

OKMER - Yes i agree with ya.. There's definitely problem here and there especially about clarity and readability T__T Thanks man!! Hey warrior Mun! :D
Well..yeah, Aveolae sure did, but i think your Garabath final colors...wow, you've improved a lot! You've been doing a lot of coloring back there now, aren't you :3
I've some nitpicks..but again, it could be just me so.. aips. To make him more menacing you could have given stronger lighting contrasts, and that you gave a backlit source it could have been very dramatic :) The tail could also be less sharp, and could do with more tones to suggests it is curving towards or away from the camera. I like the burning leaf things, but it looks quite..'soft', it could be more badass without it i think :D Perhaps sparks of fire or something of the sort to replace them.
All and all, still a strong entry..though in all honesty, i feel you could have pushed better than this >:)
Am still very proud of you, mate!
