View Full Version : DWIII - 3D - erik_j - Regent

02 February 2008, 12:02 AM
So finally time to make a thread! :D been looking around until now and really psyched!
...handling excitement.. (((( /xD\ ))))
had a hard time with ideas but went from throwaway sketches to ps now and have my first candidate but I'm not very sure about how fitting he is even though I like the concept. will try and do more candidates for great cgtalk dominance! 7
todays guy:
Name: Regent
Race: Human
Class: Warlord
Artifact Weapon: Vegetation - Viral hawthorn root
doesn't typically hit the spot as an artifact since you'd expect a distinguished object... I wonder what judges will think about that... (opinions? :0)
wonder if my viral plant thing is "magic" enough too.

Story :D:
So this guy is the general regent of a cornered nation that lost their icons of sovereignty in conflict already.
Our broken empire lost its posture among its rivals when suprised by the living machines. Crippled, to have our long chastised enemies exact submission in return.
Our armies are spent and spent again by others, reluctant to spend their own blood to repel the new threat.
Our since stringed regent will now gamble the fates of his exhausted people to seak out the agressor and means to forsake his fidelity and abandon his post, now sure to be merely symbolic in the obvious lack of proper indenture. His one sorry bet is to give his body to an unrequiting parasite, long rightfully forgotten in the deepest of our forests. A living, growing weapon from before the old world, once used by our ancestors to conquer any people fearing first for their skin before their nation, and never touched since for it's nature of stinging the hand that weilds it. Such stung that it has its victims spread it further or in return by giving them their remaining vigor in twenty or a fiftyfold while taking their sanity before offering their figure to the landscape for keeping.
The General Regent has bared his bones where they are shallow and invited nature. Now we're all forced to put our hopes on the strength of his composure to dominate his mind as he engages the only instrument to oppose an army demanding the means of but one mans body... ...ooor something! well there was my pretentious atempt at a story xD
the main vegetation elements I've wanted to use are buds and hawthorn-like branches (they grow into a caesarian crown from his shoulders btw) and clothes should be inspired by withering leaves of sorts (don't know what that on his chest is). c&c pl0x :V

btw. I was out gathering reference material in the nearby foliage today, will photo it and post tomorrow when more light reaches my room... right now I have tiny spiders drawing lines between my furniture xD\\

Good luck everyone! :0//

02 February 2008, 10:35 PM
photoed the stuff I brought indoors yesterday and made collage. perhaps other vegetation countrymen can make use :)
big big collage: (links to 7mb) (
here ( are all the source photos. lucky I could just toss all the scrap out of the window afterwards :P
made a nice bouquet ( ( fancier than any living stuff people usually put in vases :)
my workstation ( really rigged up now! ready to get serious with concept work tomorrow! >:U9

02 February 2008, 10:43 AM
Hi Erik, nice concept with the parasite. It would be cool to see some ideas explored as if the man is more bent, almost like a hunchback with the parasite bigger, to show visually that the plant is definitely a negative, parasitic thing overall. Maybe the parasite wields the weapon itself? looking forward to seeing more...

Dominance War III ( (

02 February 2008, 09:59 PM
Hello mate!

Long time no update. I acually agree with jasonjuta to challange the silhouette more by making him a hunchback. well . . . but in the end i guess that doesnt matter my entry is going to make your Regent his first victim. Ho ho ho ho!

peace are for weaklings the war is on!

cheers keep up the good work mate ;)

02 February 2008, 07:07 AM
thanks for the critique!! :))
I will experiment with impeded posture and such as suggested! I may need to be ready to make him less handsome if it makes it a better character I guess :P

In any case the idea is he gradually will be morphed by the hawthorn by everytime he's injured and the hawthorn regenerates the lost/damaged tissue (into a more (hard but magic) wooden tissue) which also occurs over time. so he'll be like a stale ent in the end but before he turns a tree he hopes to succeed and then he might collapse and hawthorn given all control and go tetsuo alot etc before turning a tree... should try all stages and choose what to model after what turns out coolest.

special relation with hawthorn in combat:
so he can't do these things normally at free disposal since he must fight and supress the hawthorn from taking over his mind or he'll just go randomly berzerk and likely won't beat the bosses and save his empire and he would also go berzerk on CGTalk allies which just won't do! xD
so these superpowerful outbreaks will happen when he's knocked out of control, unconscious or dead etc.. and then healed by this h.t. and its impetuous tissue growth.. and if lucky his body will still be usable (didn't have to replace heart, spleen or brain? if so, turned tree, game over..)
so the only default (non- costsome limitbreak) use of the infection is he becomes very strong and all skin, muscles and bones heal very effectively and no short term downside.. so run of the mill warlord manual labour to hack through armies from there :)
maybe by the last boss if he's not more h.t. than man he's learned to command the h.t. without it taking over his mind...
so lack of armour is since he can regenerate and trunk on back is heavy already.

more c&c greatly appreciated!

02 February 2008, 07:27 AM
You got some real intresting concept here mate. I especialy like the part that he needs to struggle to not let the green part of him take controll over him. you seems to have the concept all nailed down so when will we be able to see some 3d stuff?

02 February 2008, 10:06 AM
Lovely concept...and heavens above, I adore your sketches. Great lines...but *cough* that's besides the point for now.

Great concept! ^^

02 February 2008, 10:35 AM
i like your idea ~
hope to see the 3D model
it must be cool~

02 February 2008, 11:12 AM
Wow, I like these sketches a lot - I really like your process. It's really loose and expressive - the character looks really leafy, mouldy if you get my drift. Will watch with interest!

02 February 2008, 12:50 AM
decided to do a dedicated entry thumbnail for the submision system. would be quick since it was only 128x128 but ended up spending the day doing it so might as well post larger here x) will get to some final concepting now, I'll use this guy. really like him. still have to add some detail and polish the effectiveness a bit.

02 February 2008, 12:13 PM
I hope to see a char like that one day in a game. Great concept and powerful lines. Did you ever think of making an illustration book ?
I'm curious on how you will do that in 3D, especialy for a game engine restraints.

My only crit, and this is probably just my mind, is that those branchs around his head remind me a bit of Jesus crown of thorns.

want to see more !

02 February 2008, 05:54 PM
harr, my thoughts went into a quite similar direction, with that parasite thing.. :>
Though, the result are different, phew.

So, very nice concept sketches!

I'm going to watch this. ;]

02 February 2008, 08:38 PM
Nice thumbnail, if the hawthorn does make give a crown of thorns look, I think that's a positive idea for the character concept, since he is a martyr after all...good work so far.

02 February 2008, 11:24 AM
wow Erik!
thats a killer concept u got there, i love the sketches, made me laugh :applause: good going

02 February 2008, 09:44 PM
Great concept, inspiring!

02 February 2008, 11:11 PM
So you think your twigmagic will pierce my polycount plate? Ha ha, I'll dance a jig on yur grave and drink mead from yur skullbone!

hrm....beside, it looks really good. :)

02 February 2008, 05:05 AM
very nice concept. I think you should go for it. By the way, your concept work is very nice. I think you should take this concept, it's quite unique.

02 February 2008, 07:32 AM
Finally got a change to check out your concept. Its looking really great, and the idea behind it seems real original. Your in the same boat as me, Im also worried my character bends rules or isnt quite on target. Im not the one to say if yours will get the OK from the judges or not because Im not even sure if mine will haha. But from what I can tell, there should be no reason to not accept your entry. Nice touch with the polycount ogre hah.

02 February 2008, 03:55 PM
jocz: thanks alot! :)) I have, and comics too.. (time.... x)), about crown, oh silly scandinavian ignorance.. I hadn't even thought of that xD and I agree it's kind of annoying to think he'll have a resemblance of that :/
Eonwe: thanks! so are you going to put your thread in your signature? :)
jasonjuta: yeah... martyr xD zomg that's corny also.. hadn't thought of that either.. will try to avoid sheding any martyr:ish light on him :) (would seem too cheezy and sorry x))
imtilongchar, wiFLP: thanks!
Belltann: harr! (how do vikings laugh??) we'll see about that! :D (and needless to say, your concept is cool as jewelized moose droppings!)
Rares: thanks! eases my angst over not having done more thumbnailing :)
KP: thanks! I definately dig your concept! I think they should both suit the compo :U7

working on a chronologic sequence on the development of his infection, have to work faster!;0//
here's something that caught my eye on the way home today. for me or other veg. m8s. I've been considering hawthorn blossom &| buds and this seems close. lichen is nice.. too bad fresh mutant hawthorn wouldn't feasibly ackumulate any in time :) (pic links to photos) (
time to draw some lines! :)

02 February 2008, 06:34 AM
so that big beefy guy... is he one of the full metal machine guys that came through the wormhole or is he what becomes your character, or is your main character the thistle guy?

btw, i love the thistle ent guy. cooool.

03 March 2008, 02:01 AM
so, i thought i'd pop in and dump all over your thread... j/k

really like the design so far, certainly a unique method of attack. the only thing i'd suggest is to either replace some of his limbs entirely with vegetation, or make him really thin.
like, Iggy Pop thin.

looking forward to updates

03 March 2008, 03:56 PM
Scudz: thanks for the suggestions! replacing a limb alltogether with veg seems like an obvious choice considering the idea with the h.t. and all :) hadn't thought of that! was trying to avoid the "powerarm"(?)-trend but it's so obvious that that'll happen to this guy given the hawthorn concept that it probably won't seem too cliche...
anyways.. improductive weekend but here's half of a chronologic sequence (of the hawthorn infestation (man->mindless tree)) spanning the fantasised game.
second half coming soon. doing these so I can decide what stage I'll choose for the model but turned out more like half-useful story cutouts.. will try to be more to the point.. (and start modelling soon! :0\\)
better get speeded up... playing Ken Ishii - Time Flies xU

03 March 2008, 08:03 PM
Nice story drawings  I actually planned to do something similar with my own character, if I find the time. I'll watch this...

03 March 2008, 10:09 PM
Lookin real good Erik, your style is solid and your character is really interesting. Not much to say from me, Im just excited to see the model. Will be a little challenging to capture all this in a pose haha.

03 March 2008, 10:18 PM
whoa. Awesome lines man.

Interesting ideas.
But polycount is blaspemous!

03 March 2008, 06:54 AM
Hi erik,
Nice concept man....... keep doing. Love to see 3d
ALL THE BEST:thumbsup:

03 March 2008, 07:47 PM
Hall! :)
Very nice concept you've got going. I like the fact that his power has a mind of its own, a sort of curse! I dont get how its an artifact really.. You could just have it as it is and add som kind of artifact that is the source of his curse but also gives him powers... Im not sure i think his weapon(the big sword thingy) works well with him and his veggyfriend, i guess you'll work more on most stuff so ill sit back for now and check it out as it developes! Good stuff!

Good luck!

03 March 2008, 09:00 PM
I really like your last drawings, It will be difficult to choose a "curse level" for your final modeling
IV V and VI are fantastic, but I and III are good too ...
3D stuff now, go go go !

03 March 2008, 02:40 AM
Hi! At last I got to visit your entry :D Got to warn you that I'm a noob, and as such processing my words through brain quality filter is a must.

My first word is .. Wow~! The sketches and the lines hooked me in. The concept of the polycount dude got screwed is just great. Loved the idea of branches growing into caesarian crown, good utilization of cliche. Because it doesn't have leaves it looks like Jesus' thorns, but I also like it that way. Face is very expressive and I'd want to see the feel sustained in 3D. I also got reminded by your photos on how vegetation looks different on the other side of the globe :)

The clothing from waist down + 2 pairs of sword in the very first picture flash in my eyes. Got to admit that I'm a FAN of that kind of shape which somehow I found more on sf (this (, this (, this ( although there's this ( too. To me it denotes speed since everything is pointing backward and spreading. The big sword also looks speedy. Looks great especially on the first pose, though it's not working on last pic no. V for example.

Last pic no. IV also strikes me. I just love the armor shape on the torso, hip, and pelvis. The flow is very nice. Doesn't seem to have any hint of tree though (I know it's because of the storyflow).

Anyway, about the -wow- thing you asked about: I do think that the polycount dude screwed up pic is really wow. Maybe you can implement this on the winning pose, turning it into a bit of diorama. Large amount of branching from the body covers much of the body's design though. If for example, he's standing and only his arm (or something) spread upwards into branches stabbing the polycount dude, you got the: 'wow', design, details on both thing, diorama, all of them in one shot. Looks better presentation wise, although more cliche stuff is going on. Not a good model for game production and it becomes more of a game art sculpture but well, the wow is there.

About the wow and balance thing, usually what happen in my mind is: plug 1 or 2 main design highlight(s) that has dominant silhouette + detail, then put secondary highlight(s) which is still a bit strong but less attracting away from the main one to balance. The rest, slap tertiary detail/highlight here and there to balance more and make the eyes travel around. Sounds kind of like composition on illustration but basically it is. May not work for everything and since this is devised by noob like me don't just gulp it to the brain :D Somebody please crits me too if this is apparently wrong.

Sorry for the long post, especially in other people's thread, but hope this can help. Great job so far!

03 March 2008, 01:26 AM
Martin, KP, ColdKodiak, viky70in: thanks!!
FrozZT: tack! :D well I was insecure about that from start but grew (hhh) to really like the hawthorn idea so I'll crashland this guy through any stern criterias on artifact :) (nothing says it has to be a fully separate or detachable object right? (tell me otherwise :U\\))
about the swords idea is he'll use them quite unrespectfully.. hack a sword to bits against machines.. toss, grab a new one, etc.. I wanna draw on the strength he receives from the h.t. (which makes his muscles mega ber) and so whatever he uses to swing about matters less as long as it's sharp :)
jocz: yeah 3D already! xD I'm gonna start 3D tomorrow no lies! :) the level I'll choose is probably around first illustration.. so between VII and IX (IX: think more or less a tree.. don't have time to do more now.. I get so nitpicky and slow down immensely)
here's one of the throwaway stuff I did before I started (don't say the bikini must get in there)
XP-58: Wow excellent commenting! :D those refs on waist"wings"(?) are really what I'm inspired by! :) (great gundam model! saved) I think I love that silhouette like you seem to do (your thumbnailing made me drool!) that last pic was really annoyingly similar to my dude! xP well.. probably both inspired by samurai clothes where clothes lifted up by sheeths.
great suggestions on how to achieve a working presentation :) thanks! I really haven't thought much about that yet. but I guess I'd be lame if I didn't cram in a tetsuo:ish thorn-growth in the polybudget.. thanks for the composition notes! great post! :)

so here's two steps more of the sequence towards tree.
I really like VIII now that I tried him with leaves on (had planned that from beginning but was too lazy to draw them in x)) they'll be dark blood red to denote the h.t.'s nourishing on the hosts blood :) sorry for the lame updates :> trying harder!

(idea: h.t. needs blood to do these outbreaks and that draws from guy so very costy to use up and would make him weak and floored if used excessively... level of blood at disposal in h.t. is shown by how red (full) vs black (empty) the leaves are... and the neat thing is if you find red-blooded enemies you can have h.t. have a refreshing drink :P.. also h.t.'s strength which is based on blood level also reflects the Regent's excessive vigor.. so drained h.t. and he's pretty much mortal with a heavy and stupid bush on his back.. and for instance can't use that big two-handed sword anymore (it's a solid metal mold!))

if you'd like I'd love to hear vote on severed and hawthorn-replaced arm or not. :(/7
I was intending to avoid the power-arm trend but it seems like such a given choice for this guy.. atleast somewhere near end of game (or depending on how player plays).

03 March 2008, 05:13 AM
I love your sketches. You have some great ideas in there. I'll be keeping an eye out for more.

03 March 2008, 08:46 AM
I like VIII  Just remember not the limit his mobility too much.

03 March 2008, 12:37 PM
Hell again.. :)
Now i understand your concept a bit better, silly of me not to have understod it before. I really like the idea you explained about him tossing and grabbig weapons as he goes along, maybe try to show stuff like that in some of your submissions. I think the hawthorns work well for me as an artifact, but in the judges eyes it might be a problem.. I didnt mean you should scrap the h.t. idea, i really like it. You could simply add another object that could play as the origin of the curse/infection or something like that, maybe an item that gives a hint of control to an otherwise freeminded and deadly parasite. You could just leave it as it is, i think its really cool.. VIII looks sweet! ;) Kr hrt!

03 March 2008, 01:52 PM
Fantastic concepts so far! I think you have a powerful character on you hands, keep it up your great job. Looking foward to see your model:bounce:

03 March 2008, 04:57 PM
Really original design man.

03 March 2008, 08:53 AM
hey there, thanks for cheacking out my thread, i like your concept, tree/vagetation creature. very nice. i guess it grew weapon from its body, mine does:P best of luck!

03 March 2008, 10:26 PM
my inactivity since last has been due to my mouse arm worsening so haven't been able to use it at the comp kind of at all :/ so no chance to finish in time I guess. *pout*
I've made a base mesh man with my left arm though (ctrl and alt on mouse side buttons ftw!)). you can grab the model if you like in my DWIII dump folder (
gonna buy that new logitech left hand mouse and get ambidextrous, so booya! ("first left hand mouse"?? how did left handed people get by without ergonomic 8btn mouses?)
it's got teeth and stuff... it's some ugly compromise between character-tweakable base mesh and riggable lowpoly I guess.

03 March 2008, 03:23 PM
really sorry to hear that:sad:
lefties have always been a little screwed in that dept. but that just means they work harder than the rest of us!
nice basmesh btw, slightly feminine but still a guy, and not in that Final Fantasy glam-rocker kinda way! i'm so gonna pretend i made this for my next model:twisted:

even if you don't make it for the comp i hope you finish this guy anyway, it's an awesome concept:thumbsup:

03 March 2008, 04:57 PM
PS: I forgot to export obj in polys (roadkill had me export in tris last). overwrote file with poly version.
Scudz: thanks for the encouragement :) I'm going to finish him when my arm is less sucky :)
anyone feel free to do whatever with the model if it is useful in any way.

03 March 2008, 07:24 AM
haha aww man! I wasnt intrested in the plant talent at all, i thought how boring and lame, and then you come along and make it look so cool and fun that i wish i woulda done plant stuff hahaha
good work! those sketches are great! and i cant wait to see more of the modle!

03 March 2008, 07:25 PM
The guy's looking cool! I'm eager to see the finished model!

I certainly hope you can make it into deadline. How's your hand? It's not because of hand-arm working pose, is it? One time I got a friend who managed to get her hand swollen really fast just because of a wrong working pose ...

04 April 2008, 07:23 PM
You gotta be kidding me. First of all I cannot believe I still hadn't commented on this one yet. It is by far the thread I've been visiting the most of all the DWIII submissions...
but the thought that you won't finish is bloody tragic. Have you considered just submitting it as a 2D entry? Your illustration skills sure seem to be enough to make that a viable option. Given the course that your designs have followed, the development of the concept and how well-planned his back story is (perhaps the best I've read in the forum and certainly the one that works best with the DWIII story structure) I'd hate to think of this one getting overlooked in the final 50.

Best of luck to you man, and don't give up the ghost yet!!

04 April 2008, 04:54 AM
hey erik_j ( vbmenu_register("postmenu_5077820", true); ! thanks for checking in my thread, i've been waiting quite sometimes now to see your work. dont think we have much time left. think u need to bost it up more. :) dun givup, be checking u from time to time.

04 April 2008, 10:52 AM
Thanx for the comments! I intended to dirty her up a bit, but wasnt sure if I'd have time.

I was really looking forward to your submission. Your sketches are great and the concept was incredible. I hope to see you bring it to completion in any case.

Thanks again for the critique!
