-Here's my Dominance War III entry-

Name: Acacio
Race: Animal
Class: Warlord
Artifact Weapon: Branch of Yggrdrasil
Artifact Weapon Type: Vegetation

---Original First Post---

Hey guys, Here's my official thread for Dominance War III.
This will be my first DW and I'm looking forward to sharing my progress.
When I read the backstory and guidelines last night I was wondering how I could use the "Vegitation Artifact." So this morning I began sketching out my idea of what an upright biped giraffe would look like.
Here's what I have so far. I spent about 3 hours drawing and coloring "Acacio"
(name meaning is "thorny tree"). I have some ideas for a storyline but i'll save that for later....
This first skecth is just me working out the anatomy & proportions.

I plan on adding some type of armor/cloth/accessories.

Hope you like it so far.
Check back later for updates.

Nice concept!! Very original, I am going to keep a close eye on this thread. As for the armour and accessories it would be cool to give them an African flair.

Keep up the good work!

Nice, can't wait to see the armor on him. Btw I would suggest that the legs be bent a bit more and back a bit to give off balance. Cheers

02 February 2008, 01:55 PM
Jaidek: Thanks! I'm thinking about using all engraved wooden armor with some metal fastenings. Maybe some large leaves, cloth, or war paint.

Loukor: Thanks for the comment- I agree with you about the balance of the character. I'll be sure to consider that when I'm drawing out my front/side view.

I'm currently working on the front/side/back references. For me this is the most difficult part of the process...getting every detail to line up in three seperate drawings.

Also, I would love it if there was a photoshop plug that allowed mirrored symmetrical drawing (like zbrush has for modeling.) That would make my life 50% easier! =)

Any other comments and critiques are welcome.

thats a nice concept!
animal rules!

-Quick update
I've been working on my orthographic sketches. Just a silhouette so far...
The next step will be to create a detailed drawing using this as a guide.

02 February 2008, 12:58 AM
That will definetly be one of a kind, dont see much giraffe-men. I'd like to see how it comes along.

02 February 2008, 02:05 AM
What an AMAZING idea, this is awesome!! The silhoutte looks so good, I can really see this working well. How are you going to turn this guy into a one man army? Can't wait to see more.

Brilliant :thumbsup::bounce:

Awsome an anthro Giraffe *watches* keep up the good work.

02 February 2008, 12:02 PM
Such a good idea, you're in my top 3.

02 February 2008, 07:34 PM
Thank you for you comments! I'm glad you guys like it so far. Really keeps me motivated.
Last night I did some more orthographic sketch work:

My next step will be designing the clothing, armor, and weapon. I don't think I'll keep the magic vegetation staff seen in my original concept. I want something more solid and/or intimidating.

02 February 2008, 07:38 PM
nice and original concept!.,,cant wait to see what kind of armor you comeup with this guy!

02 February 2008, 08:44 PM
this is cool! It made me smile also :D

02 February 2008, 02:32 AM

02 February 2008, 11:34 PM
thats giraffe-tastic!

Yeah, me too, I can't wait to see ideas for weapons and costume, etc... maybe jewelry of some sort, I can imagine all sorts of tribal stuff, maybe a lip piercing :D

02 February 2008, 11:43 AM
Very nice update! I am really digging the proportions on this guy. He has just the right ammount of muscle mass to him, not too built and not to thin. What are you planning to do for the fingers? Thumb and two fingers maybe? Just curious. Anyways, keep up the great work! :applause:

02 February 2008, 12:02 PM
Super!:applause: i was laugh longly:)))))))

02 February 2008, 07:35 PM
Hey guys, time for another update.
I spent some time last night coming up with some gear for this guy to wear.
Here it is:

The idea was to come up with a color set that was tribal and also incorporated our team colors. After many changes and variations this is how it came out.
Hope you like it!

As always, your comments and critiques are much appreciated.

Awesome update! He is really coming along! I especially like the color scheme and the drum is a nice touch. Have you though about adding any war paint or head dress to his face? Just a thought. Good stuff!

02 February 2008, 05:30 PM

03 March 2008, 08:44 PM
Thanks again for your comments!

I'm Moving on to 3D...
Here's the base model in quads. Not final in any way (forgot the tail too). Next will be sculpting, then back to create an updated base.

03 March 2008, 11:30 AM
He is coming along nicely! You base model looks great, very clean! Can't wait to see this guy all sculpted. Keep it up!

03 March 2008, 11:50 AM
The first time I see your giraffe, it hooked me completely! Nice concept!

03 March 2008, 12:37 PM
I love this giraffe. I really like his outfit, it has a lot of asymmetrical appeal to it. The drum looks a bit prefabricated though, maybe make it a stretched hide drum? But I'm not sure what a giraffe would think about that. Shin guards are fantastic as well. It is a very well put together concept.

I've been working on the initial sculpt for the last couple nights.
Here are some screen shots:

I still need to go in and work the fine details and refine a few areas.

GearType2: Thanks for your comments! You're right, at first I imagined him with a stretched hide drum...but I really wanted it to be a snare drum. I don't know. I may decide to change when I get there. =)

03 March 2008, 03:33 AM
looks good! definately original

03 March 2008, 06:44 AM
I like your idea go ahead man ..

Wow! The sculpt is coming along! He really is making a great transistion from your concept to 3d model. You have done a nice job mixing the human/giraffe muscles, it looks very natural. I am looking forward to seeing him with his accessories. Keep it up!

03 March 2008, 01:01 PM
This, undoubtedly, is original. Wanna see how you're gonna work on it.

03 March 2008, 03:36 AM
I was out of the country for the last 10 days and I'm just now getting back to my character. Today I've been finishing up re-topologizing my design sculpt for low/med poly.

14 days left...:argh:

03 March 2008, 11:44 PM
Here's the constume design. Next is UVing, some additional scultping, then texturing.

Here's one pose that didn't make the cut...

04 April 2008, 04:35 PM
Killer work man!! He came out great! Very close to the original concept art. I love your poses too, they are incredibly natural. Definitely some work to be proud of. Good luck!

04 April 2008, 11:35 PM
Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it. I was pressed for time and it literally came down to the last minute. I really wanted to make a better looking presentation, but missing the deadline with a completed character would have been tragic.

Any additional comments are welcome-

Good luck everybody!
