02 February 2008, 03:11 PM
Haha, finaly found you,lollll
HI Lorenz!!!HAppy to see you around!
HAppy war to you buddy!!

02 February 2008, 06:33 PM
cheers, guys! :D

Here is my first sketch!
Generic alien randomenss I guess... :P

Well, I will certainly go with alien race...
dunno about artifacts so far, need to think about the concept still.

02 February 2008, 11:51 PM
Kewl line art, reminds me of Frank Miller's "Ronin"! The legs look very humanoid, it could be more freakish!

02 February 2008, 11:40 AM
Nice to see you here matte! Cool linear sketch, love his design, can´t wait more concepts, good luck:thumbsup:

02 February 2008, 11:46 AM
Hey Lorenz, from looking at your portfolio I can tell this is going to be a tough competition, can't wait to see development on your alien, give us some more eye candy.

02 February 2008, 11:55 AM
You got a good shape going here already. Looks very interesting!
He looks like something that would crawl out of a swamp to me. The kind of thing that would have waterplants growing out of him or something. A simple-ish staff with glowing mushrooms on it for an artifact perhaps...
Actually, he could have glowing mushrooms and fungi all over...might look neat...
I'm rambling. Disregard where needed. ^^

02 February 2008, 04:48 PM
Very nice concept so far dude, just one small thing that looks wrong would be his crotch area, it's spread to far imo :P. Cheers.

02 February 2008, 09:58 PM
thanks a lot, everyone! :)
here are some more random sketches to find a useful idea.

Nathan: haha, thanks! There is some big calibur in this contest already! My strength is not character designs...

Bluntpencil: thanks for the thoughts on the concepts! Very interesting to hear people's opinion/imaginations! I really wanna do something original, not the usual fanatsy stuff. But it's going to be tough to find something unique...

Loukor: thanks! Yeah, I'd agree if this was human anatomy, hehe. But it's not! :P That's the fun of fantasy designs! ;)

I kinda like the top middle one, might develop it further...
Any thoughts, suggestions, I'd always love to hear them!

02 February 2008, 12:21 PM
these are damn cool, he/she looks starved and agonised. I really like no. 3 as a powerful silhouette. I'd love to see some speed paint costume explorations for no. 3 and see what ideas you bash out.
Also a few head shots would be quite groovy too.

:bounce: damn good buddy!

I'm following you :)

02 February 2008, 12:14 AM
Nathan: thanks a lot, man!

Ok, so i tried pushing the 3rd sketch into this.
I wanna go with a summoner of some sort.
The concept (if you could call it that already) is having demonic crows manifest and evolving into more powerful allies as the character is gaining strength (or something like that). The type of creatures he manifests could also depend on the state of mind he's in. Experiencing fear or a threat he might summon more powerful creatures to aid him.
Lol, sounds kinda lame. :D

I also need to think about what the artifact really looks like, huh? I like how the crows come out of the back of his head, but that's not allowed I assume...

BTW, it's some sort of androgynous character, a gender is not clearly defined. Basically male but with feminine traits.

I go back to meditating... -.-

03 March 2008, 06:56 PM!

03 March 2008, 08:18 PM
Great sketches so far, Hideyoshi! I like the proportions and the spiky bits. But yeah, you definitely need to think about the artifact. Crows coming from the head is cool and all, but might not fit the rules. What about a small cage: i.e. too small to hold the tons of birds that will pour out (becuase it's magic! :) ) Haven't seen any other combatants with a cage artifact yet... Anyhow, good luck!

03 March 2008, 05:21 PM
ArtSpace is over, so I can take care of this now! :)
Being the indecisive dude, I started anew, here is something for a start.
I am thinking dark Samurai-ish warlord guy with a pair of katanas/naginatas (there's your artifacts). Maybe summoning something, dunno. :/

Thanks, njoo, walrus! Mike, you made some good remarks! I like the spikey/feathery bits myself, so I am certainly trying to keep them!

03 March 2008, 06:38 PM
I love the elongated looks of the extremities in your concept. Makes a very nice style. I like the girl with birds going out of the head, very original!

03 March 2008, 08:04 PM
Thank you, DDS! :)

some ideas...

03 March 2008, 08:14 PM
The samurai dude on the right caught my eye, looks very powerful because of how tall he is and the outfit makes him look even bigger. Would be cool if he had a spear with a banner on it with the CGtalk logo, maybe... just an idea heh. Cheers!

03 March 2008, 02:47 AM
Hey Lorenz, cool design and concept, the samurai style armor is awesome, great work!! And the other sketches are really great. I like a lot your figure on front view draw, cool kmage!! Looking forward for your progress !! Cheers mate!!

03 March 2008, 11:14 PM
Thank you guys! I am running with the Samurai now :)

here is another sketch with different ideas, design...
I still wanna explore some other (extreme) costume shapes and weapons, so I will do some more thumbnails...

Artifact: Darkness? some kind of dark mist that affects the enemies' psyche. They experience freakish visions, uncontrollable fear and become insane which renders them useless in battle. :)

03 March 2008, 11:26 PM
Oh Boy! The samurai freaks me out! Very nice! Go on! Buuut...... Dunno about the darknes/psyche thing. Once the mai enemy is a army of MACHINES.... Not really shure about the level of consience of those things, would't risk this awesome character with a maybe inefective weapon...

03 March 2008, 12:18 AM
Some very nice stuff in here for sure, like your style.. I like the samurai touch on your latest, my character is also inspired by asian culture. I think it would give him much more character showing his eyes. I know its a bit mystical and scary with them covered but i still imagine some not very scary eyes behind that cover becouse of the look on his face. Maybe show a hint of his eyes in a very dark shadow of the cover if you elevate it some, or put a more harsh look on his face or even take the cover away. Very nice stuff still.. Keep it up!

03 March 2008, 12:19 AM
Really cool stuff

go man, we have a war to win

03 March 2008, 10:51 PM
Perin: ooh, good point! I missed out on that! They're fighting against machines, right!
I guess I was wrong when I thought I had a cool artifact concept ;P
Well, I will think of something else, hopefully not too generic... Thanks a lot!

FrozZT: thanks a bunch for your crits as well! Hm...I see your point, but I like to have his eyes conceiled I think. It lends an air of mystery to the character like you said. :) Well, I could try and see what it looks like having the cover removed or translucent etc.
Heck, I was even considering giving him a completely different head, something alien and freaky! Or go the demonic route and totally drop the head, so he only has a floating helmet :)
I'll see about that! Really appreciate your thoughts!

Toledo: let's kick some arse!! :)

03 March 2008, 09:05 AM
Awesome samurai. I agree his weapon needs an upgrade -right now looking more like weak stick good for self defence from an average size dog attack rather than fighting with deamons :) Excellent sketches anyway.

03 March 2008, 05:51 AM
No no, still a great artifact concept, just make it short-circuit their CPU and he's be the biggest metal ass kicker :) Excellent character btw, can't wait to see him rendered!

03 March 2008, 05:25 PM
You have a lovely lively line quality, really free and fluid. Some interesting ideas shaping up.

03 March 2008, 07:21 PM
mime1: thank you for the feedback! I am considering everything you guys say! :)

Laurentiu: same here, thanks man! That's an interesting idea! I'll see what I am gonna run with in the end. :) Either way I wanna somehow use a 'darkness' artifact...

Robert: thank you very much, I really do appreciate what you said there! :) I can give the compliment right back at you!

here is an update, another instance with some design tweaks if you will. This time it's a digital color sketch, playing with more dynamic/bigger shapes for the artifact - as you can see I am still clueless concerning that...
I think I like the loose armour skirt thing better than the full-enclosed one, what do you think?

03 March 2008, 02:49 AM
great sketches so far. your recent color sketches have a lot of power and presence in them although i feel the guy on the right in previous b/w sketch still has a more commanding presence. the loose armor thing is more effective as well. I cant wait to see what artifact you create for this guy

03 March 2008, 10:19 AM
Awesome update man! Love his armor design:thumbsup:

03 March 2008, 10:04 AM
oohhh i love your samurai! it's so badass and sleek! you got some amazing works!
can't wait to see your final stuffs!

03 March 2008, 02:24 PM
Nice work!

I would give him a very characteristic artifact. That a big glove won't make him stand out enough. Your artifact is going to be your shape defining thing here I guess. Do something cool weird and different, maybe something completely unrelated to samurais? To increase the contrast. Just a thought though :)
Keep it up!

03 March 2008, 06:41 PM
Thanks a bunch, balasa, rawwad, gough, DavidSmit!!

Balasa: yeah, I agree! For the final illustration I will prolly go for a stronger build for him again! :)
David: thx for the thoughts! I completely agree with you - I think going for some traditional Samurai wouldn't be that interesting, so I thought of something else now... :)

What about a coffin that holds the darkness inside, unleashing it upon the foes in battle? :)
Laurentiu also made a good remark about making the dark fog short-circuit the machines - I think that's a cool idea! :)

I should definitely settle on something soon, or I will not make it to a finish... O_O

Anyway, here are some sketches, definitely rather lame on a design standpoint.
I also really wanna have him have an additional weapon like a sword or a japanese bow beside the artifact weapon. I hope that's along the rules... (?)

03 March 2008, 07:12 PM
really nice paintings and some cool concepts

03 March 2008, 05:32 AM
Wow, I think the coffin idea is great! and original too. One think though.. I didnt know it was a coffin until you mentioned it, probably it because of the color? It could be just me ;) .
Anyway... cooooll character concept from the beginning to this stage.

03 March 2008, 06:02 PM
Cheers for the comments. I wish my stuff was asfluid as yours though, you have a really nice loose quality to your line.

04 April 2008, 06:40 PM
Thanks, Robert, Wilson! :)

Getting more serious now, here is a sketch for the final illustration. I had intended to go for more action, but I quite like the composition with this one, so I might go with it. Not much time left anyway...

I'll change the color scheme drifting more towards blues and blacks and dots of red (like the logo).

Also, finally found my character's name!
Yamiten: 'yami'=dark, 'ten'=heaven

He is turning the sky black with the dark mist from his coffin! Cool, eh? :D
I guess he runs as an Invoker now. Too much magic involved for being a warlord I guess...

04 April 2008, 07:18 PM
amazing development so far. can't wait to see the final illustration. Checked out your other finished work on your website and it's really strong....great color, etc. I've got high expectations for this one.

04 April 2008, 10:18 PM
hurrying towards the finishing line now! :)

here is a color update, some more detailling also. Need to fix arm anatomy...
still a lot to do :/

04 April 2008, 01:26 AM
Looking nice, Hideyoshi! The muted palette is nice, and I like how the smoke from the coffin is so heavy that it's obscuring the sky. You haven't established a strong light source yet, but it could be kind of cool if his head and left shoulder were in shadows from all the smoke billowing around the sky. it's okay if you obscure the character a bit for mood: You'll still get to show his details in the other two sheets. Or at least I think it would be okay! :)

Oh, and you might want to consider making his head a bit bigger in the color painting to fit the body. In your earlier concepts, he's 7 heads tall, but here his head is so small that he's a full 8 heads tall.

Good luck with the rest!

04 April 2008, 02:27 PM
Mike: thanks tons for the great feeback!
I agree with you, currently this is an ambient-light-only situation. I actually like how it's only lit diffusely without any direct light source.
But then, I also like the idea of having him lit partially like you suggested with his head in shadows so I could also show more detail on his body in a better way...
Well, kinda clueless right now, here are 2 different ideas. I went for blueish light, kinda otherwordly. Using orange/yellow light didn't work well with the cool palette I am aiming for.
Also, I made a version with stronger ambient light from the sky reflecting off of the character which I think looks pretty nice.

I'd really appreciate if you guys could let me know which you like better, thanks! :)

04 April 2008, 05:33 PM
Hey, still coming on well, really like the latest work. Still keeping your looseness too. Well done man.

04 April 2008, 11:35 AM
great job, love pose and mood so much, looks fantastic.

04 April 2008, 10:21 PM
Thanks for the comment, I'm working on textures soon but will probably run out of time. Will keep checking your site as I love your drawing.

04 April 2008, 04:20 PM
Robert, Tibor: thanks again, dudes! :)

Uargh, too bad. I don't know if I can manage this.
Still painting up my main illustration and then I also need to do the orthos and additional sketches...
It's soo damn tight, this will be very close if at all possible... :/

04 April 2008, 01:31 PM
Ok, here it is!
Possibly my final winning pose. I might do some tweaking maybe. Calligraphy done by my mother btw. :)
Need to tackle the orthos first though! And sketch up some action shots for the 3rd sheet.
Wish me luck! :)

04 April 2008, 07:48 AM
Hey Lorenz, nice going there! Looks like you're going to make it!

Nice work on the modelling sheet too. But I think his arms are maybe a bit too short (in relation to his body)

04 April 2008, 09:43 AM
really cool style~!

i like it!

04 April 2008, 11:02 AM
Hi there!

I just went through your samurai, cool concept and Nice line drawing, so versatile and clean, makes me jealous=)

Zoddler-->DWIII (

04 April 2008, 12:37 PM
Alright, here goes!
Final rough draft sheet and I am done! :bounce:

Thanks, Art2, jingudyi, Kukut27! Good luck to you guys!

Yeah, the arms are a wee bit short, but I was aiming for a very athletic built, rather heroic so that's fine I think. :)
Also, don't wanna mess with it any longer even a minute - phew, this was exhausting.

04 April 2008, 05:02 PM
Congratz to finished stuff friend! It looks fantastic, love design so much, also idea with cofin is briliant. And great sketches in concept sheet. Good luck :)
