FINALLY!!! (*updated*)

My works have done. Really thank god i make them on time... maybe i'm just lucky to finish everything on time, instead of other projects that also need to be finished =P

Below here are all the works for the DWIII competition (already summit them). When every time i look at those works, i feel glad i have achieved this so far; not a very damn good artwork, but the fact that i have learned a lot of things during this competition. I never design a monster in my entire life before (maybe i've drew a lot of anime before). i feel proud being one of the participants in this DWIII competition, not because i'm like going to win, but the fun of completing the designs with others, and working ("fighting") together in a team (CGSociety). Helping each other while finishing own designs. What a great!! Cheers to all! =D

Ah, and also, time management is very important!! (duh!)

Sometimes i feel quit sad to know that DWIII competition is going to end, maybe because i love doing character designs. This is a great place to learn great things like nowhere else! I think i'm fall in love with game character design field (thats what i'm aiming for!!) From now on, i'll try my best to improve myself in the character design (and try to get an Intuos too!!! i need it sooo badly!! =P)

Anyway, good luck for all who already summited their final works for this competition. And for those who had given their precious ideas and comments during my design process, thanks again for u guys. I know i'm still new here, and i'm still have a lot more to improve my skills. U all are just great!! ^_^

finally... done some sketches for my character design. sorry for the long post coz' my phone line was down =p really frustrated..

Anyway, here's the sketches. I think i'll go with the Warlord, since i saw quite a lot of people choosing the Invoker. And, i'm choosing Earth/Rock energy for the artifact. Still thinking of what type of weapon and also armor for this character.. the one on the sketches is just a rough idea. hope i'll come out with a better design before i moved to the next step.

got some new ideas for my character! Maybe i'll try putting a pair of horn on the head, and design some tattoo all over his body... sketching now =)

if u notice the right arm of the character is something strange (on the second thumbnail).. rite! He lost his right arm in one of the numerous wars between the planets. now, when he going to fight, he'll only use his left arm. he was suffered terribly since then, but he never give up. he trained very hard to fight using his weak left hand,..and he succeed! he is now one of the fearest/toughtest warrior (sorry for the bad grammer...)

i still want to add more story about his background, still got some portions to edit, will be posted here soon!

going to design a better weapon for him... maybe i going to choose 2 similar artifacts?
saw the logo on his back/left thigh? yea, i'm going to design a special CGSociety logo for this character, maybe blends with some tribal-like tattoo. more to come! =)

I don't know why nobody else has commented on this; it's looking really nice. Having the weapon attached to a stump is a really neat idea—seems very brutal—but have you thought about amputating all of his limbs? You could make something really creepy that way.


Forgot to mention this. I really like the segmented horns.

Maybe i'm a very,very new here... nobody knows me... thats why no one giving any comment to me.... until now, Swizzle! thx once again for your great comment.

amputating all of his limbs? sounds good, i'll try to apply that on my next sketch. hope i'll get more comments so i'll have a good guide for a better design. =)

(thx for liking the horns. i'm going to put some tattoo on them to give the 'creepy' feel.)

nice concept so far, i like the proportions you gave your monster
you could try to make the stransition between the weapon and the arm like the flesh is growing around it

anyway nice work and don't worry about the no comments they will come one at the time :)

really solid concept! the thing i'd suggest is pay more attention to the silhouette,try to keep it simple and go crazy with the details inside it, cause some of the elements seem to be a little lost like that mace ball for instance, but other than that very good job so far! i especially like his head ! cheers!

The spike-crest on his back and the blade attached to the stump = AWESOME.
Swizzle makes a good point with amputating more limbs though...would indeed be creepy as hell.

Really sorry for the late update due to my busy working days this week... however i'm actually still sketchin' no matter how busy i am... just the upload matter...

Anyway this is the update sketches, actually still not sure how to amputate the character's limbs... however this is the idea. any comment? before i moved to the next step (coz i realized i'm really left far behind!).

this was my idea of attaching two blades on both of the arms (sorry for the blurred image). however i'm not really like it, as it makes the character to look quite weird...

as i promised, the colored version of the head, just some simple and fast color rendering. i think this is good enough (about putting symbol/tattoo, mm i think it'll make the head look too busy). or anyone still have any extra/helpful comment about the head?

hope i can finalized the whole character so i can start sketching for the pose of the illustrated version... =P

Hello Syncmax. Your entry is definitely coming along well. One thing I noticed is that the weapons don't really match the style of the character. It looks a bit too clean-cut, when the rest of him is rather rough. Weapons need to not only look cool, but need to be functional in telling something about the character. One possible fix for this is to add dents around the blade and whatnot. Right now the weapon looks like it belongs to a thin, agile character.

His peg-leg foot... I think it looks a bit too fragile? "HAHA! Can't catch me now!" *run run run run peg leg breaks*. I say go ahead and make his armor and such bigger and mightier. He looks like a super strong character after all. And heck, Warcraft characters carry 2-handed weapons... one in each hand.

Otherwise, the design is looking great, especially the head. Keep up the work!

Pixelsage, really thanks for your helpful comments. i'll try to make the weapon not too clean-cut, perhaps adding some blood stains and dents. Maybe trying to adjust the weapon's size a bit.

about the peg-leg...yeah i think it's really looks weak, doesn't suits the overall character body. i'm still not sure whether i need to stick with this, and fixing it, or leave it and go with the normal actual foot. Maybe i'll sketch both out then decide later..

i'm not going to put too much of armor for this character, as it'll block the body and makes the character uninteresting. some armor on the forearm/leg will do. i want to keep the character simple and nice.

some sketches will done within this nite... if i'm not too busy. thanks again for all the comments. =D

some update... sorry just one sketch i've done... hate those busy working day...

Just realized of the artifact i've chosen..almost run out of the track. i should design some earth/rock-like elements for the weapon. this makes me to redesign the blade thing again. (again, thanks to the Pixelsage's comment about the weapon.)

i had designed the magical ancient stone that eventually become blade and been used by the VIRUS as a powerful weapon...

Now that's the kind of weapon I'm talking about =). I actually typed up a whole thing about elements yesterday, but CGS went under maintainance when I submitted it and I lost it all. I was just wondering if you were settled on the element, because earth/rock seems like the obvious answer to a character that's well built in hand-to-hand combat. If you can execute it well, it might be worth exploring a warlock that can use the less common warlock elements... air/lightning, ice/water, etc. Imagine an air or ice shield, what cool effects you could do. But, if you're settled on an element, scratch all that =).

Oh, the way the weapon's attached... do you think he'd have a bit of a hard time swining that thing from one joint?

Thanks for ur comments again! as always, your comments are so helpful =) heh i also had the same problem when i upload my artwork and the CGS went under maintainance =P

you're right, the earth/rock element seems like the most popular choice among Warlord class. Before this i had think about 2 choices other than earth/rock, which is air/lightning and summoning.. coz it's true the earth/rock seems very obvious choice for most Warlord characters.

i found that the air/lightning element is quite interesting. i'm thinking how it'll looks like to have a lightning blade plus an air shield (air shield? Perhaps 'storm' shield?). Want to sketch them out. =)

If i have enough time, maybe i'll sketch all the weapons for each of the elements. From there perhaps will help me to choose the best =)

Heh about the way of the weapon is attached, yea it's looks uncommon to have only one joint of the arm. Anyway i've to leave it first, waiting the list of the different artifact elements to be sketched out.

after this week hope i'll have a lot of free time for this competition... sketchin' now =D

Awesome, I'm really looking forward to your work. One thing... for the air/lightning weapon, imagine how long or broad it can be, since you'd figure it'd be light. Or maybe it gets longer or expels a bolt of lightning as it is swung?

Don't let my random ideas drag you around the board too much. You do have a deadline after all =P

Pixelsage, i'm really glad that u keep watching my thread, and advising me =)

While during sketchin' the air/lightning element, suddenly i got this idea for vegetation--"poison mushrooms" (??) maybe just want to play around,... anyway i don't think i'm serious about this. =P

"HAHA i'm the Mushroom Guy!!" (LOL)

Anyway this is the simple bk/w render of the air/lightning artifact. I don't want to put too much heavy armor for him. The left arm is the 'storm shield', and the lightning blade-like thing on the right arm will be modified a bit more soon.

I think i'm quite happy with the lightning/air one. =) At least it's better than the common earth/rock artifact.. any comments?

Heh enough doodling around...this character design makes me having so much headache (keep digging ideas) and hurting my brain, sketchin' about 17 pages of A4 paper full with all the character design stuff...sleep at around 2 am almost every night... =P

Sorry for the late post! i was struggling with other works, just like others =P

Anyway i had redesign again (?!) the character, and i think this is the final one. i'm quite satisfied with this one. the layout for the modelling sheet/character concept have done, so if nothing wrong then i'll finish that by next week and start the final illustration =)

so again, here's the details:-

Name: 'VIRUS'
Race: Mutant
Class: Warlord
Artifact Weapon: 'ChaosThorr' (Air/Lightning)

I had given a name for the artifact weapon, which is 'ChaosThorr'; named after a celtic tattoo 'chaos star' and the Norse god of thunder, 'Thor'.

"Since all artifacts seems to be hand-held, why not try to put them and carry at the back?"

so i decided to choose that spike thing at his back as the artifact. plus the secondary lightning blade weapon.

sketches. I'm still thinking whether still want to keep that blade on this sketch or not, but it looks too overboard :-

Hi again!

I'm currently working on the winning pose illustration. Discover a new way to brush is a great fun!! hope i can finish everything as soon as possible...

the concept sheet is 90% done, going to start on the modeling sheet soon, but i can't wait to play with the winning pose first...heh heh
