View Full Version : DWIII-3D- Abstractcore - Loxodon
02 February 2008, 05:09 PM
Hello, its my first post in this forum, as well as my first contest, so wish me luck.
Beauty Shot (1), Winning Pose(2), and Cunstruction Shot(3):

Race: Demoic Animal
Artifact Weapon: Water/Ice
After many ideas and sketches I have come up with this one as hopefully my final idea. I will probably end up changing a lot of things but this is roughly the way I want to go. One thing I want to get in there, is to make it perhaps a little more demonic, and maybe put more ice elements.
Also I am wondering if Warlord fits my character because in the rules it sais that " he/she has mastered the art of hand-to-hand combat"... would ramming people with its tusks be considered "hand-to-hand combat"?
Ok so here goes the sketches

hi, I think the spikes on his hip look out of place?
keep it coming!
02 February 2008, 11:25 PM
Yeah, very true, thanks for pointing that out. I am just thinking that I want something to be up there, I am just not sure what or if it would make any sence.
I am going to model the elephant first, and than finalize my ideas on the armor.

Ok here are the fixed stats for my character:
Artifact: Ice Blade
Race: Mutated Elephant
Here is a screenshot of the low poly version (modeled in 3DS max):
Of course this is a regular elephant tho. This is simply the base model by wich I will modify my model. This will be a mutated elephant so expect it to be very different from what it is now. After I mutate my elephant I will proceed to making the armor, and than on to the artifact and accesories/extras.
I am still sketching out what I want for the armor, however I will finalize my idea on what I want it to look like after I mutate my elephant because right now the armor is pretty much based arounnd a regular elephant.
Here is a sketch:
Also my concept board attached:

Here is a screenshot of my character on zbrush, without actually having done anything to it yet besides subdividing it:
Ok, so I haven't even touched my model in zbrush yet because I have a couple of questions. Right now I stand at 6,145 polygons like it is in the image above. I am wondering if leaving roughly 3 thousand polygons is enough to model the armor? As it stands it seems like a lot of the detailing is going to depend on the bump and displacement maps, because I can't really do too many details on the elphant itself with 6k polys. I've never really modeled restricted with a limit in polygons.
I am also thinking of how his mutation is going to look like. I've been thinking of making it so that some of his bones pop out of its skin, and human intervension giving it some bolts or metal fused into his skin.

I just caught the flu so I havent really made too much progress, I think I will rest up a bit after this update.
So here is what I think his "mutation" should be: (2,240 polygons without the plataform)
Comments and critiques welcome (ehem... needed).
This is just the body tho, once I get the armor in he will look radically different.
P.S. I've also been thinking of weather to give it a rider or not.

Good start, is this a base for sculpting or the final model?
The hind legs look a little flat, and triangular. Keep it going, should be good.
02 February 2008, 11:47 PM
No, this is just the base for sculpting. Everything done so far has been in 3ds max, except for that one render.
I will fix the hind legs and any other abnormalities. I still feel like there is something else that I could do to the body, or maybe I feel this way because I haven't done the armor yet.

After seeing so many people already in the zbrushing stage, I have forced myself to work faster.
Alright so I have finnaly finished low-polying Loxodon. I changed some of his features such as making the back horns smaller to give him more agility, gave him some kind of mutated legs, and replaced his normal elephant ears with horns and with a banner resembling ears attached to them (this you can only see in the wire since I am to lazy to render it again).
note: (armor is not final, and is WIP obviously)
I have also decided to give him a rider since I felt it would be just plain lazy and stupid not to. Giving him a rider brings the scene more alive. And I think he is going to be a dwarf. So, here is what I have in mind for him:
and here is the low poly version:

Just a tiny update, this is the concept for the "Loxodon General" (the rider)
I shall hopefully gather enough time to work on and finnaly show my progress on the dwarf's armor this weekend.
Oh and sorry for the sloppy handwritting that looks like it was written by a 5 year old, its all done by mouse.

Just another little update, I know I've been slow since I've basically had no time to dadicate to this besides some weekend nights.
Here is some work in progress:
Dwarf Rider with armor:
Now that its spring break for me, I should hopefully have plenty of time to work on it. Ugh, I hate time and whoever invented it :(

Hey Ignacio, really cool concept, I like a lot your idea on Loxodon, a really interesting point of view and fore sure a great warrior! I like the horns on it, perhaps a bit more offensive like a bull (can be a mighty wepon :D) Again, nice work, and looking forward for more updates. Cheers mate !

Here is the work in progress of the high res of the loxodon rider. I am currently working on the chestpiece, but I am thinking i should rework some parts (details), if not completely remake it, because I don't think I really like it. Oh, and the left eye will have crystals coming out of it along with a scar or some kind of injury to go along with it on that side of the face.
Looking at the time I have right now (and also looking at my poly count), I am very tempted to drop the elephant (Loxodon) altogether. I will have to see tho, I will try to finish the rider as soon as possible (maybe by this weekend), and if I finish it by then I will continue on to the elephant.
On the polygon side of things tho, I don't know, it looks like I will have to perhaps make the elephant severely armor-less and just beef up his body naturally.
Here is a close up:
Edit: No, infact, upon further inspection the chestpiece looks really ugly, please ignore it, I shall remake it immediatly :P

Ok, good news, I have finished the high-res Loxodon Rider and textures. Perhaps a little touchup on the fantasy injuries on his body, but other than that he is done (besides posing him, moving around beard, etc)
Here are some renders of the high-res model:
C&C welcome :)

ok, So I haven't updated in a while, so for the sake of not getting disqualified I will post up the screen of the weapon:
I am currently working on fixing the textures, pedestal, and final shots, which I will update hopefully within time of the deadline. I've been having a lot of problems with the normal maps, and them matching up with the texture map etc.
Now I know its not the best entry in this competition by a long shot, but considering that I am still in highschool, I think this willl go along nicely in my portfolio. So, I think it was a good experience overall and a good way to learn.

Ok, here are the images I uploaded for the winning and cunstruction shots:

Here is the beauty Shot:
Texture sheet and concept sheet attached...
and with that I am done!!
