I am finally posting some wips, since I got hold of a scanner (didn't want to submit bad digital photos).

The next two images were a part of looking for ideas and sketching whatever came to my head.

On this page I felt like I was onto something with the character on the right. I initially was thinking about a holy/light clericon character, but I switched to an Invoker with summoning powers, which were channeled through a gauntlet-like artifact.

I've been doing some action poses to help me figure out the character's personality and movement a bit more.

Frontal view sketch. Still trying to figure out various aspects of the design.

In this image I went further with understanding the shapes and specific traits of this guy by fleshing him out a bit more.

Crits and comments obviously welcome. I will keep on updating the thread as I have more stuff I can put up.

Oha! Like the freedom of forms...

03 March 2008, 04:28 PM
your concepts looks cool.... especially the heads

03 March 2008, 04:38 PM
Awesome pencils mate:thumbsup:

Nice concept as well, keep it up!

03 March 2008, 05:01 PM
Very nice stuff.. I think i like the one with spikes only down his neck rather than the ones where he's got horns/spikes on the sides of the head too. About the last one you did, his body shape looks like it belongs to a warlord at first glance, again i like the first one you did more(the one with spikes only down his neck). It would be seet also if you'd show maybe his shin or just a tip of whatever hes got under there, to kickstart the imagination about what his face looks like. Again, really cool drawings! Keep it up..

Good luck!

cool concepts your style Rocks!!

03 March 2008, 10:08 PM
Thanks for the input, everybody.
FrozZT, I am actually thinking about him not having a face, just a weird incandescent, rock-like glowing thing when he summons his magic, and which otherwise would stay dark.

03 March 2008, 10:25 PM
very nice pencil sketckes!

03 March 2008, 09:08 PM
Here I show how I want the upper part of the body to look like. He has no face; instead he has a strange biological material that reacts to emotional stimuli from the summoning. As the power engulfs him, his unusual head is lifted further away from his body, stretching and glowing from inside as it the invoking takes place.

Some action sketches

03 March 2008, 02:38 AM i think this one is fantastic. you really have a great talent my friend. cant wait to see you succeed! plz gimme pointers on mine if you would be so kind

03 March 2008, 01:51 PM
Wow, nice Piero! I love the fungoid head.

The anatomy is pretty flawless, and I love all the little spikes and scales.

I would love to see him have more fetishes or magical knick-knacks. I also think this guy would have a familiar, like a featherless crow or a skeletal dog, or a land crab... I dunno... I'm just makin shit up because I don't have much constructive stuff to say, it's just awesome.

Keep it up! Let's make Baltimore the new beating heart of concept art! RAAAHHH!

03 March 2008, 05:15 PM

So here is the ortho. I've been trying to give him a bird sidekick, but I think he'll stay alone. I'll post the drawings as soo as I can scan them.

04 April 2008, 05:07 PM
great concept man !!!

04 April 2008, 05:22 PM
great sketches man !

04 April 2008, 06:59 PM
I really like this character, especially thye head ideas. Very cool indeed, more updates please!

04 April 2008, 02:47 PM
So here are a couple of sketches more, plus a final illustration wip.

I thought I could add some sort of bird mascot of his, but I ended up ditching the idea. Here are some quick sketches of it.

And here's the illustration wip so far... I'll post some of my process images later - it's gone through tons of changes. Still unhappy with many elements of it. I think those front green wisps look cheesy. I'm getting to the point where blatantly wrong and horrible things pass by me unnoticed, just because I've been looking at it for so long...

04 April 2008, 03:33 PM
so cool! I like it! ! !

04 April 2008, 10:56 PM
Man, I just realised the composition needs a lot of work... Like I said, I don't even see the mistakes by this point... Maybe moving him to the right a bit, and working on the depth of the piece; right now it feels awfully horizontal...

04 April 2008, 11:56 PM
I drastically changed the composition. I think it works better now. I'll try to make it less duochromatic in the left side of the painting, and bring in more analogous colors like the other side, as well as bring some of that red up into the sky and focus on giving the robots green reflections to make the composition more cohesive.

04 April 2008, 02:59 AM
I am not sure if this works better, from left to right. I will be working mostly on polishing up the color a bit more and the robots here and there. I think I am some hours from being done.

04 April 2008, 04:19 AM
wow dude really great character, very cool infernal Atmosphere

Piero. Great sketches bro. Your anatomy rocks! I need to do some more pencil drawings :). The concept turned out quite awesome, especially the arm piece. It's a shame you didn't include the bird because I really liked it. It matched up so well with the figure in terms of style and design, plus I've never seen a bird interpreted like that. I think your color final can be improved if you give him more focus, perhaps by breaking up the clouds behind him even more and really pop out that silhouette. Also maybe use the green whisps to direct the viewer toward the main figure even more? I can see yellow green or yellow orange to add some variation to hue. Well, I wish you luck on your way to the finish line.

04 April 2008, 05:21 AM
You are right about the bird, Sang. Here I tried to incorporate him into the piece, which I'll know if it was a horrible idea tomorrow, after I get away from this damn image for a bit...

04 April 2008, 05:29 AM
Great work Piero!!!wow.Love that atmosphere!
Don't know yet neither if that bird works out well.
MAybe some more light on the bird from the green lightsource?
Some backlight on the character could make him pop out more.Just my 2 cents.
Anyway awesome work and huge atmosphere!

04 April 2008, 06:29 PM
You created really some thing else. congratulations. Nice colors, good design of the knee and arms. The pet looks some thing special to war, like a power shadow. Your backround, I dont like at all, dont means anything on video game. Good luck Ruco

04 April 2008, 07:58 PM
Yeah, great job Piero, the best of luck to you! Thanks for all the comments on mine. We should have a Dominance War participants get together at Brewer's Art!

04 April 2008, 08:14 PM
Well use of color on your final. Congrat and good luck. :applause:

04 April 2008, 06:15 AM
The Flork: thanks man! that means a lot from someone with such an awesome piece himself! Good luck as well.

DDS: Thanks! Yours is pretty cool too! The fact that you wrote up such a long backtory is appreciated. Nobody does that (I didn't, hehe..). best wishes to you.

Alex Novo: Thank you. that;s quite a compliment. Yor character is pretty crazy! he reminds me of Yoshimitsu.

OKMER:Thanks a lot. It was hard, but I did it on time... Your piece, by the way, is awesome! I like how aggressive he is. He has a lot of mass and weight. He can kick someone's ass...

Wilzoon: thanks man, that's one crazy design you got up there as well!

lallorona: Gracias. Me rei cuando lei tu comentario sobe el fondo. Asi me gustan las criticas; directas y honestas. El fondo es mas ilustraivo que otra cosa...

Muttonhead: Thanks Sean! Definitely will call you up soon to go get dominated by beer!

nathanmckenna: wow, thanks! I gies I came up with the head design through craziness... Cool entry on your part; very sinister.

jttruong85: thank you. I struggled a lot to finish that winning pose and be remotely satisfied... Good luck to you as well!!

04 April 2008, 04:03 PM
Thank you a lot!

04 April 2008, 07:36 PM
Hey Piero, really nice finale and cool concept, congrats mate, time to put on the table a lot of beers and a big tequila bottle :D Cheers!!

04 April 2008, 07:09 PM
Hi Piero,

The head design is by far the best in all your character! But he looks solid as in the whole concept! the creature its my favourite maybe its does violets and blue shades on him...that gives a more magical personality, witch I am sure its very important in this kind of games! Well done! And congratulations in daring to do you own art! Not a very common attitude to see in here! I admire that in any artist! Best of luck!:beer:
