View Full Version : DWIII - 3D - fluxist8070 - child
02 February 2008, 11:18 PM
Here is my latest....
This sounds pretty fun.
Here is my concept.
Artifacts: Jar and Razor.
The stalker is a child. The child will be equipped with air/lightning. The majic is embued into her jar. The child collects fireflies like any child, but once the insect are put into the jar, they are charged with the lightning majic. The child and the fireflies are able to communcate through subtle electric impulses much like bees. This way the child is able to acquire information by using the insects as spies. The jar Basically imbues anything that is put inside of it with majic. That includes the child's razor and herself as well. The air power lihtens her physical weight and increases stealth by allowing the child to actually walk on air instead of terrain. The child spy usually introduces herself into a social environment as an orphan or lost child. She does her work before she is realized as an assassain spy and then normally disappears. her preferred weapon is a small straight razor that the child charges with lightning/air by putting it in the jar. The origins of the jar are a mystery.
p.s. will post sketchs soon. I am scanning them now.
02 February 2008, 11:20 PM
Well everyone on this forum seems to be doing a hot babe so I would recomend the child one because it would be different from the other entries here.
02 February 2008, 11:24 PM
Cool, thanks for your opinion. I like the child idea more too, but I think it is going to give me nightmares.:scream:
02 February 2008, 11:40 PM
With artists nightmares are often more creative inspirationally than dreams so maybe it will be a good thing lol
02 February 2008, 11:42 PM
Here are my quick sketches.
02 February 2008, 11:46 PM
The little girl should have glowing eyes or eyes like a cat that would be really creepy
02 February 2008, 12:10 AM
That would be creepy. I was thinking about some horns too, or something to deviate from the human form. Maybe add some tats, or have her smoke a cigar...
02 February 2008, 12:13 AM
Horns cool, tats cool, cigar yuck. It's just my personal opinion of course but I wouldnt' do the cigar.
02 February 2008, 12:16 AM
Yeah, it might negate the innocence deception factor. Though, it would fir the post-apocolyptic time frame. You know, give her a little clint eastwood?
02 February 2008, 12:20 AM
lol very funny
02 February 2008, 03:04 AM
here are some more defined sketches of my child stalker.
I am not sure what to do with the amulet or the eyes yet.
I am still trying to think of a good dress pattern too. BTW, I am really creeping out my fiancee.
02 February 2008, 03:09 AM
thats creepy hehehe
02 February 2008, 04:42 AM
Trying to get some facial markings going....
02 February 2008, 04:49 AM
The face makeup with the red mask makes her look a lot like superwomen, You might want to change it to something more gothic style?
02 February 2008, 05:03 AM
thanks for all the feedback.
I tried some gothic stuff (well, I guess its gothic, it was all black and swirly, I have it saved as a layer, I will post soon. I am not too keen on the whole goth thing, but that might suit.
02 February 2008, 05:38 AM
I like the young child with scaple look. Looking good man.
02 February 2008, 01:15 PM
I like your idea very much, Matt. I intent to make a little girl too, so we could exchange information during the battle, I think. Keep going, that I'll be folowing this thread. Good luck, fellow.
02 February 2008, 04:46 PM
Wow. that a very nice idea you got there!
Also if you are trying to make the girl look a little bit more goth, why not have her wear one of the things that go around the neck that look like dog color.
Ps-sorry for the spelling
02 February 2008, 06:12 PM
thanks for the resonses.
jramauri, sounds good to me. collaboration rocks!
KonL, I think that a choker impliles sexy hotness. I don't want the child to take that path. I will go post apocolyptic all day, but the goth stuff is not the direction I see this going in.
Especially since I slept on the idea.
But, thanks for your opinion.
02 February 2008, 06:34 PM
You know you are right, I am sorry I donít know what the hell I was thinking.
02 February 2008, 06:40 PM
Oh heck, it was worth a shot, man! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the feedback.
It's just I want the the sweetness of an innocent girl, you know, winnie cooper all wholesome and whatnot. But, she has the ability to level giants and behemoths, and she can cut you like a Vegas pimp!
The goth look would make her look like a bad ass, or at least a bad ass wannabe?
Imageine if Beaver Cleaver had the power of conan, the stealth of a ninja and the attitude of Raislin Majere.
02 February 2008, 01:18 AM
I just got back from Dallas from a conference. I am still goanna finish this character up.
...business is business.
02 February 2008, 03:38 AM
Here are some screens of my base mesh. I just started modeling today. I hope to get this stage finished soon!
Oh, and Any suggestions on how to approach the dress?
I was going to extrude from the waist?
02 February 2008, 06:43 AM
here is where I am at with the base mesh.
next: finish tweaks on the base, make uvmaps, detail in zbrush....
I am also working on the props too. Will post soon.
NOTE: Right now I am at 1756 faces.
02 February 2008, 04:31 PM
Here is the razor.
It took me about an hour.
02 February 2008, 12:12 PM
Great progress, man. It's on initial stage, so I don't have much comments to do about. But her shoulders are larger than they should be. And her face at this moment looks a bit adult for a child. Check out photo references to compare.
To give more expression a for the figure, I think you could make her hands a little bit higher. If you are using maya, add a cluster to her hands and made them bigger ofr us to see how they look. ;)
Good work, mate.
02 February 2008, 07:32 PM
Thanks for the feedback. I will address thos issues. I am working on UVS right now so I ca taker her to ZBrush.
02 February 2008, 03:53 AM
Well, I have mapped my uvs and have started working in ZBrush. Still couldn't get gator to transfer uvs, so I had to do that in maya. Anyways here are some zBrush Images. I am still working on the overall form of the model. CC welcome.
02 February 2008, 09:35 PM
I am about halfway done with my ZBrush work, so I thought I would take some time to update.
I am ready to start sculpting/texturing and adding small details. Here is where I am so far.
I am not really happy with the hair....hmmm...
03 March 2008, 06:33 AM
Here are some texture and detailing updates. whaddya think?
03 March 2008, 06:53 AM
Here is the face with the logo
03 March 2008, 12:15 PM
Man, I got to admit I don't like her. With this suffering expression, and zombie look, she doesn't look attractive to me. I'd never play with a char like her. I didn't like the dress patern too, too repetitive to me. You could try to do some lace, and childish details on her clothes. And change that expression on her face, to something more powerful, or menacing. The way her shoelaces are put on her boot looks too spread on my opinion. Are you using references?
03 March 2008, 07:54 PM
Thanks for your crits and your honesty. :)
I was cuising the posts and I was seeing alot of mutated creatures, so I tought I would try a mutated look for the her. I do have a traditional texture map saved too. I wanted to bounce this idea off of others to see the response I would get.
I want her skin to look like it is infused with majic. I am tying to figure out how to do that.
I agree that the dress pattern is too repetitive and you are right, I do need reference for the boots.
I will post my references soon.
I have not yet addressed the expression of the face.
May I ask, how would you go about doing the hair?
thanks for your responses.
03 March 2008, 09:23 PM
i like idea 1 better... just give her a pet or monster to protect her from all those metal dudes!
so the electricity deactivates the metal monster? cooool
03 March 2008, 05:31 PM
The way her skin looks by now is just a kind of zombie. Maybe you could try to add some tatoos on her skin, or even glowing lines. Change her outfit would a good idea too, as her dress is to simple for a DW character.
About the hair, I intent fo make the hair of my girl on zbrush, less the fringe. This part works better with transparency map, on maya.
Looking forward for your ups, man.
03 March 2008, 12:10 AM
here is a quick update. I still have quite a bit of work to do on her.
03 March 2008, 12:27 AM
I agree with the comments about the zombie.
I also think that the amulet isn't nessessary, it would be much cooler if it were the jar that was the artifact, like the source of her power. It'll be way more original too; Amulets are a pretty obvious idea for an artifact.
I don't mean to insult or anything, just trying to suggest improvements.
03 March 2008, 01:48 AM
Thanks for the response!
You will be pleased to know that the jar is the artifact. It is what allows her to communicate with the insects she catches.
03 March 2008, 10:15 PM
There are some slightly improvements you could do to make your char looks better, in my opinion:
1. Bigger eyes, to look younger;
2. Bring the mouth nearer to the nose, for the same reason;
3. Make the head bigger, to make her 6 head tall, a nice proportion for such age;
4. Waist thinner. Children ares so thin sometimes you can't accept they have organs inside. I know you can think that will lack volume on her, but this can make her look more like a real kid;
5. Less spread legs;
6. A little more volume on boots;
7. See the shape of her shirt? This helps to give some volume to this area;
8. More definition on arms, as her sleeves are so thin and tight.
I hope this help you, my friend! If I were you, I'd made that red stains on her face more subtle, they are too exagerated by now.
Looking forward for your next steps.
03 March 2008, 04:22 AM
Here is a more defined concept. Considering the feedback and considering my own results, I went ahead and decided to work out a more solid idea of what this character will look like. I decided to go with a more punk styling. After listening to bad religion, rancid and goldfinger all day, it seemed to make perfect sense. Same powers, just a differenct look. the new look seems a bit tougher too, since this is WAR! Of course a stalker would not have the logo plasered on the chest inside of a heart, but I think the integration makes enough sense to go ahead with it. 'sides, a good stalker would never be seen until it was too late
thanks for all the feedback so far. Now onto reworking the base mesh that I have.
03 March 2008, 11:37 AM
A great change, undoubtly. Now she looks much more menacing and adapted to the war.
You haven't said anythig about her age, but I consider that with this new attitude and style, a teenager would be more suitable to this char than a child.
Good job man, I hope too see this developed. Keep it up.
03 March 2008, 04:36 AM
here is a screen of my wireframe. 8971 tris so far. I left some for the eyes. I had to order some more RAM for my machine so I can increase the subd level in ZBrush. Should be here this week. I am increasing from 2gb to 4gb. I am excited to see what I can do with a subD level of 7 in ZBrush.
03 March 2008, 02:37 AM
So, I got my 4gb of ram, but 32 bit windows OS will not recognize it all. (even vista...)
ANyways, here are some updates after doing a clean install on my machine.
THis is the first pass with zBrush. I still have alot of work to do, but I like this direction much more than the previous version.
03 March 2008, 03:17 AM
Here are a couple of test renders. One from zBrush and one from xsi with textures and normal maps applied.
I still have to tweak some rogue UVs. Thanks for looking!
03 March 2008, 01:18 AM
here is a pic of the concept next to the working model. The post is rough right now. I still have some weight painting to do. I also need to tweak the dress and the pigtails....among other things. C&C welcome! I am using orange, green and light blue lighting. I lost my shadows somewhere in tweaking, I need to get those back...Next opst will have some shadows. the backlight may be blowing them out.
03 March 2008, 11:00 PM
here is my latest.
03 March 2008, 11:23 PM
Man, her body shape looks kind a weird to me. I sugest you revisit those points I posted on your previous version of her. Of course clothes and colors are much better, bur her shapes really don't please me.
03 March 2008, 11:41 PM
Hmm I second jramauri... I think the outline of her head could come in to better pronounce her the shapes in her face. At the moment her head is a round blob, while her face looks a little manly. Sorry but the head and face do not seem to be working with each other. This isn't helped by her torso, which seems wide compared to her arms and legs. The hands could also be a little more petite in my opinion.
I would define her chin and cheeks a little more, widen her arms and legs, give her some more shoulders, widen her fingers, then reduce the torso a little. Once fixed some of these bits I would then try and get it as close to concept as possible. You've come a long way, so keep going!
03 March 2008, 05:36 PM
thanks for the feedback.
I will take another look at thos overall proportions and such. I will put the legs closer together once I have her rigged.
Here are some of my refs. Will post updates after I am done working today.
03 March 2008, 10:54 PM
Here is a screenshot with latest changes. I changed the face-made the eyes bigger brought mouth closer to the nose etc. I shrank the waist torso and hands and I plypainted additional details and added volume to the arms and legs. I also trdid the hair.
04 April 2008, 05:11 AM
Here is a pose rendered in mental ray. Once I figure out glow maps...I should be able to finish... The fireflies were done in Photoshop.
04 April 2008, 01:31 AM
I have fireflies glowing in a jar now...which, I would call progress especially since I found out glow effects in XSI are lacking. I ended up plugging the glow map into the Incandesence intensity of the shader and it seems like it worked. It is not emitting photons, but it is close to what i wanted to represent. This contest is great. I am really learning alot from this!
04 April 2008, 03:38 AM
man this little girl is creepy! I really like the firefly idea and the pose looks great
04 April 2008, 04:20 AM
thanks! i have been working my butt off on this character! It is nice to hear some positive feedback!
04 April 2008, 05:46 AM
Here are my maps and a couple of test renders-
I added a more intensity to the key light. Not photon intensity, just hue intensity.
Color with baked OCC
Spec Color: Based on key and fill lights.
04 April 2008, 06:44 AM
you may want to toss in a back light in order to make her pop from the black background a bit more.
also you might want to bake an AO map for the color pass inorder to make your texutres a bit less flat. also dont forget to tint the color of the AO map also so that its not just flat grey
04 April 2008, 05:56 PM
thanks for the input spider. The hair does blend into the background, I plan on using a much lighter background. Instead of using ambient occ. I baked the green channel onto the color. It *kinda* worked...but not as well as an actual ambient occlusion map.
