Current status: Hammering out concepts!

----Original Post----

I haven't quite nailed down the basic idea yet, and the concept is still pretty rough. I originally wanted to make him a kind of holy knight, but he evolved into a sort of Atlantean shellfish/dragon warrior, so I'm not sure where to go next. I haven't settled on an artifact type, but he's definitely going to be a warlord. Right now I'm leaning towards either pushing the dragon style or taking a more Eastern-inspired route and giving him more of a samurai look, both probably going with fire/lava for the magical aspect. Here's my initial art:

Good luck to all!

Cool! Aquatic-Dragon theme could work nicely!
You could have some fin motiffs alongside some reptilan shapes with lotsa spikes and horns an' stuff!

If you wanna give 'em a fluid aquatic feel, maybe give the char long hair ? Oh wait...have to model it all. Bugger.

Right-o then, we'll be waiting!

I think I'm going to avoid hair as much as possible, for convenience's sake. I may or may not keep the facial hair, depending on how much of a hassle I'm up for. I think I'd like to take a more alien direction, though. I'm doing some quick sculpts to lay down ideas and get some raw material to work with.

I tried a samurai-inspired concept and I'm pretty happy with the basic idea. I'm going to dip into 3d and play around with shapes and silhouettes for a bit before I settle on it, though.

I really need to buy a bigger tablet. I'm using a 4x5 on a 27" monitor and it's driving me nuts. Think I need a 9x12 at least.

Not a chance! We loves our 27" Samsung, yess we do... so I think I just might get that bigger tablet this week. In the meantime, I'm starting over. Right from scratch. Just gonna do some silhouettes until I get something I really find interesting. Right now I like the idea of an axe maniac, but I'm kinda digging my scrawny little guy on the left, too. We'll see.

And yet another brand new direction. Went back to good old pencil & paper and came up with this ex-Clericon axe-wielding lunatic. He forsook the healing order and went out to chop some 'eads off. Needs some solid detail to crank up the concept but I'm really liking where this is headed.

I love his stylized proportions, not sure if thats what you want but it looks good.

Thanks Louis. Right now I'm aiming for a really lanky, elongated look. Here's where the concept's at: it'll evolve as I start modeling, and I've got many details in mind that I'd like to add, but I thought I'd keep the basic design clean and simple.

I like the lunatic idea! :D more schizzo lunatic look maybe! :)
like you said cranking up the concept seems probably like a good idea :) I found myself correcting my plans of how eye catching my character should be after reading this:
"Wow Factor Is your entry eye catching? Does your entry look like it can destroy rival planet forces and at the same time, defend itself from machines?(...)" from this page (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/events/3/judges/index.php)
in any case, good luck!! :)

I know what you mean about needing that "wow factor" and I'll definitely keep it in mind. For now, though, just the basic body is in order. Here's some quick sculpty action.

Gearing up to actually get some solid work done tonight. If this dude is going to war, he should probably be a bit more muscular than I originally depicted him. Also on the way: some kind of actual backstory.

Well, I went out and bought a brand spankin' new 9x12 Intuos 3 yesterday, and is it ever awesome. I've decided to start over here, right from scratch, and make something truly badass. Here are my first rough sketches.

What I'm basically thinking right now is a sort of space knight, a warrior with medievally influenced but still futuristic armor and clothing. Might be alien, might be human, I'm not sure yet. I'd like to include a sidearm; one of these guys has a shotgun as well, which I believe falls within the contest rules. Whatever the case may be, I definitely need to do some more sketching. Which is fine by me, this new tablet is a beautiful thing :)

Hmmmm... a Space Knight...... interesting.....

Lets see, what can we do to make that come across ?

1. Make his armour really old and worn, especially with little holes/dents as if he actually floats around space and so space dust, micro-meteorites and wotnot have worn his armour quite a bit.

2. Sidearm-wise, it should be fine to make a "magic shotgun". Like a shotgun that fires out mini fireballs, for example, or small super-charged balls of lightning, so go wild! ;)

Good luck, and enjoy the tablet!

Hey Laven, thanks for the comments. I wasn't thinking he'd actually be out in space, but it's a cool idea. For this newest concept I've decided to go with an oversized revolver and some kind of flanged mace. I think I'm finally going in the right direction.

Doodling in Mudbox again, I thought this would be either a cool mask/helmet for or the actual face of my character.
