Good luck to everyone.
Still coming up with ideas. I'll post some sketches soon.
02 February 2008, 08:09 PM
Best wishes pal
02 February 2008, 12:01 AM
Hey thanks KU2GUN, and good luck to you too.
02 February 2008, 12:15 AM
Ok I've decided on my characters class and artifact weapon,
Warlord & Fire/Lava
I wanted to create an unusual character type, did a few sketches but wasn't getting anywhere, so I went with a bipedal muscular beast.
His weapon is the head of a magical lion or bear. He was probably hungry and didn't want to waste the head when he finished eating the rest of the animal.
Here are a few thumbnails, and I'll start working on a more detailed drawing soon.
02 February 2008, 10:51 AM
Hey man, so far the silhouettes look pretty standard beast man thingy, would be nice to see something a bit different. Have you thought of a name for him/it yet? maybe that would be a good place to start with design.
02 February 2008, 01:07 PM
Hey man, how about making his animal head into his weapon - like a sort of stylish, imposing egyptian god / minotaur helmet that gives him magical powers?
02 February 2008, 11:23 PM
do some thumbnails in zbrush, i've seen you zbrush stuff before and it rocks. You're clearly a being from a higher dimension.
do it, do it.... do it.
[peace and cake]
02 February 2008, 08:54 PM
Hey guys, thanks for the comments, always welcome, I'll definitely take those suggestions on board.
I've named my character GONJOLOZ: old cypriot word for monsters in story books.
Here's a few quick sketches I did.
02 February 2008, 09:17 PM
Hey buddy, I really like the name, makes me think of powerful demons. grrrr...
02 February 2008, 10:41 PM
haha thanks Nath.
Been trying some different ideas, but I keep coming back to a beast type structure, so I've decided to go along with that.
I want to get down his proportions and anatomy before I think about armour and accessories. Not sure whether or not to give him horns, or maybe just big ears that could create a horned type silhouette.
This is another quick sketch which I'm kind of happy with structure wise. I think the next step for me is to create a model sheet and use that to make a base mesh. I'll use that to try out some things in zbrush.
02 February 2008, 01:01 AM
Hey, nice arms, he must work out.
I can tell that the process will be quite organic for you, I really want to see the name drive the feeling behind the model because I think theres a lot in a name, but maybe thats me being weird - who knows?
I can't wait to see your Zbrush stuff :bounce:, show us a base mesh next maybe?
02 February 2008, 11:09 AM
Check out this maniac!!
are you thinking of making him this big?
02 February 2008, 01:19 PM
Thanks Nath, I think you're right about giving character based on the name, I'll keep that in mind. haha, don't think I'll be making him quite as huge as the guy in that pic:), but he'll probably turn out pretty big.
I've done a model sheet, like I said before, I'll use this to make a base mesh, then I'll worry about accessories.
02 February 2008, 05:24 PM
I've been working on the base mesh, nothing worth posting yet, but I realised I havn't got much of an idea about what to do with the head:shrug: . So I did some sketches of the head from spheres. Not realy happy with any of them, so I'll keep trying. Any ideas?
02 February 2008, 05:54 PM
Best of luck my  .Lets destroy the enemies.
02 February 2008, 07:54 PM
nice work mate,
looking forward to seeing how this one develops
02 February 2008, 02:14 PM
I just know this is going to look cool!
02 February 2008, 02:16 PM
He's a cool cat, looking forward to seeing more.
02 February 2008, 03:01 PM
still working on the base mesh, I'll post an update soon. Trying to get all the loops I need, but still have enough left over for the armour and weapon.
02 February 2008, 05:50 PM
come on Kem, don't be shy!
03 March 2008, 11:51 PM
Alright, it's about time for an update. I think I might be falling behind. I havn't had much time to work on my model. The base mesh is nearly done, just need to lower the poly count some more, and build the weapon and some armour. Can't wait to get him into zbrush.
03 March 2008, 02:44 AM
Further ahead than me! base mesh looking great, keep up the good work!
03 March 2008, 07:49 AM
lookin good man, would be cool to see some variations in the base mesh, some random ideas chucked in here and there maybe. I wonder what he would look like with 3 toes? ...(just kidding) :D
03 March 2008, 02:04 PM
like the base mesh mate, looks like it 9001 tris tho'. looking forward to the sculpt
03 March 2008, 01:12 AM
Thanks guys, haha yeah with all the parts its just under 9000 tris.
Havn't had much time to work on this, not sure I'll be able to finish in time.
So I've just managed to get it into zbrush, this is just a small update, I'm gonna start zbrushing tonight.
03 March 2008, 10:30 AM
Hey Kkem, pretty neat foundations here. I think some parts need more attention, would be cool to see some variations in facial features and different horn types.
03 March 2008, 10:44 AM
nice weapon, i think a nice detail would be scaring or bleeding around the area where the teeth cut into his hand.
03 March 2008, 02:17 AM
Finally an update, I've finished work on the main body, actually I'd like to spend some more time on it, but I still have loads to do. Next I'll start zbrushing the belt and weapon, then on to texturing.
03 March 2008, 02:32 AM
nice sculpting man! just the nipples seem a little tiny but thas all
03 March 2008, 10:33 AM
 Good job dude. looking forward to textures.
03 March 2008, 10:44 AM
Very nice stuff Kem, I love the detail - the face is really cool too, i didn't like it at earlier but i guess that's because you hadn't worked on it, and he seems very anatomically accurate.
except for the nipples.
they should be more like this:
03 March 2008, 01:36 PM
I love the sculpt Kem. Nathans post is offputting but the nips are a tad small. What ya gonna do for an artefact?
03 March 2008, 02:39 PM
hahaha , yeah thanks alot guys, appreciate it. I agree the nipples are a little small, I'll tweak those asap. Thanks for the reference photo Nafe, your hair has realy grown since I last saw you.
rob: the artifact is gonna be the head of a lion (with fire/lava magic). I hope to start zbrushing soon.:)
all comments, crits, and nipple photos welcome.
03 March 2008, 03:06 PM
Nafe, your hair has realy grown since I last saw you.
Ha! ..yeah, I still can't figure out how I managed to grow a beard at only 12 years old.
03 March 2008, 07:00 AM
Awesome character! Good luck!
03 March 2008, 07:01 AM
are you going to pose the character using z-brush?
03 March 2008, 11:27 PM
Thanks medunecer, if I have enough time, I'd like to skin and pose him in maya. I'll probably end up animating him eventually anyway, I like to rig all my models. but if I don't have enough time, I'll just use transpose master.
Here's an update on the artifact, like I mentioned before, it's the head of a lion with fire/lava magic, so with the diffuse map I'll try and make the mane a blend between hair and fire.
04 April 2008, 09:12 AM
The updated artifact is really good! I like your sculpting skills. Thanks for your answer!
04 April 2008, 07:49 PM
damn man, really nice! want to see that textured! good job!
04 April 2008, 05:23 AM
Hey kkem, are you going to texture your hi res model first? I'm really curious about the texturing process of your great character!
04 April 2008, 01:44 PM
Thanks for the support guys, appreciate it.
medunecer, for the texture I'll be building a base in photoshop, then paint out seams in zbrush, and add some more detail.
So I've finally finished the high res model, and yesterday I unwrapped the uv's too:D . Today is texture time. Oh yeah, and on the side I've doing some skinning too.
Here's what the final high res model looks like in zbrush.
04 April 2008, 05:47 PM
Sorry I haven't had time to take a look for a while. Man he is sweeeet, awesome sculpting man, you've done a great job, he has a really good feeling of weight to him. His nose area is my favourite part, he has a lot of expression, not just rage like everyone else. How you going with the low model, can't see me finishing now, need a few hours this week but you know how it is. As long as my computer doesn't crash like last week's fun and games, I couldn't boot up for 4 days and then had no disc drives.....moan, excuse, moan.....keep up the good work.
04 April 2008, 06:50 PM
Definitely one of the best sculpts I've seen so far, are you putting anything in his belt buckle area? I also noticed an odd rim between his belt and abdomen, is that gonna be part of the belt? can't wait to see the final renders...
04 April 2008, 08:38 PM
I agree with jasonjuta: amazing sculpt!
04 April 2008, 02:46 PM
Zbrush so cool man
04 April 2008, 11:33 AM
Thanks a lot for the comments guys, really appreciate it.It gives me the extra motivation I need to get the model finished in time. 4 days left!:scream:
ronert thornely, sorry to hear about your bad luck, but come on man, you gotta finish in time. I've already finished the low res model, it's the first thing I did.
jasonjuta, into the buckle area, I'm putting the cg society logo. And the rim between his belt and abdomen is part of his loin cloth. I better revisit it to make sure that reads.
I've been working on the texture, almost done. Havenít generated the normals yet though. I'll try and post an update tonight.
04 April 2008, 11:47 AM
dude, you got some amazing sculpting skills! i've got no critics at all, and i really hope you finish this one on time cause its great! hurry this up man wanna see this one finished!
04 April 2008, 02:51 AM
Thanks alot dmightyone:) , yeah I'm just blasting through with the rest of what I have to do, just to get it done on time.
Here's an update. Been working on the texture, this is just the diffuse on the high res. Still need to make the alpha for the cloth, spec, ao, normals.... . And I havn't even started texturing the artifact yet   .
04 April 2008, 06:19 AM
Great! Really a cool character!
04 April 2008, 10:02 AM
looking good kem, i think thats definitely one of the top sculpts in the whole dw3. fingers crossed you get him done for sunday.
i'm all done now thankfully, took me till 3am tho'. gotta go out to drink champagne now to celebrate. well we're actually celebrating shanna's birthday but secretly i'll be tosting the completion of dw3!
thanks for helping me with the pose yesterday. i did another walking pose for the beauty shot which i think looks cool too.
good luck man,
04 April 2008, 04:23 PM
Hey thanks alot guys,
Thanks darren, glad you're finished, your entry has turned out even better than I was expecting, good luck. I'll give you some more input on your thread. Now go out and celebrate.
I still have a lot of work to do, I'm working on my submissions.
These are a few screens from maya.
04 April 2008, 07:29 PM
well done mate. He looks really cool, good texture job. I can't generate the transferred maps, my home pc crashes with the high res mesh so I'm out now. Will try and finish at work some time this week but well done for all your hard work. He is reallky something to be proud of and am sure will do really well. Fingers crossed now!
04 April 2008, 12:50 AM
nice work dude, I love the sculpt, if only I could get my arms to look like that - my real arms I mean, not my DW characters. but you knew that.
And you MUST post a little animation too, just so we can all drool because he looked so awesome when you showed him to me moving around. the flesh looks real!
cool, good luck mate!
04 April 2008, 01:41 AM
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaAAAAAaaaAAaaAaAAaaaaAaAAAA:wip: :applause:  :p :D
FINISHED, I'm done, I'm so happy.
Thanks alot for all the support guys, I realy appreciate it.
I swear, I'm never gonna sit infront of a computer again until..........monday morning at work.
Here are my final submissions
04 April 2008, 09:45 AM
Congratulations for your great final pieces!
04 April 2008, 10:12 AM
This is really cool man!
I love the way you've presented the low, high, normal. looks full of character, aggression and ...dominance!
I'm glad we both finished in time, it was a damn struggle and next time i'll make sure I sort a schedule out.
my eyes feel like they're set back a whole inch - I can see my eyebrows and cheek bones at the same time.
04 April 2008, 11:34 AM
good work man. WAHEY you did it!
he looks awesome and much cleaner without the black markings, the normal map shows up much more. the poses are really great too.
I agree with nathe mate, get some anims :bounce: up man, he will look even more dominating.
really glad you got him done in time.
04 April 2008, 02:13 PM
Great work mate, i knew you'd make it. He looks absolutely rocking, you've done brilliantly,it's sculpt-tastic, now lie down and rest for a bit, maybe with a nice biscuit.
04 April 2008, 04:06 PM
you know I like it, and his face is full of character, glad you finished!
04 April 2008, 07:50 PM
lol, the black markings are still there, i thought they were the shadows again. still looks great mate.
04 April 2008, 09:52 PM
I like the hands and the feet, the pose CBB and the eyes to. over all its pretty cool. also in the future I would recomend a pedistal that is more striking and matching the characters stature. Good on your for finishing.
04 April 2008, 09:45 AM
yeah, I agree, but what does CBB mean?
we need to see it animated! :)
04 April 2008, 06:52 PM
medunecer: Thank you, and the same to you.
nathanmckenna: Thanks. yeah I just about finished. I found myself sweating at the last few hours trying to put together my submission sheets.
darren white: Thanks, haha, I was gonna tweak the texture and the black markings, but I just ran out of time. I never got the chance to just sit back and look at my finals, and make changes. I rushed to finish off all the sheets in the last couple of hours:banghead: .
robert thornely: Thanks alot rob, sorry you didn't get to finish in time. But show us some pics when you finaly do.
jasonjuta: Thanks dude, means alot.
QuantumPixel: Thank you. I had so many things planned for the pedestal, I wanted it to look realy cool and different. I just didn't have enough time. So unfortunately I had to go with a cylinder:cry: , and I'm not happy about that at all. I took a look at your entry, great model, and a realy dynamic pose.
Yeah I definitely want to animate my model. The rig is basically finished, I just need to do some blend shapes for facial animtion. But I'm gonna take a little break first, I was realy tired towards the end of DW3.
Here's a little test I did (not sure if it's worth posting), it's not an animation, just a test of the skinning. Still needs some tweaking, and the belt isn't done yet.
right click, save target as...
04 April 2008, 02:36 PM
thats awesome man!
looks so cool, can you make him say "I eat Game Artisan forum members for breakfast"?
