artifact has to be hand-held weapon afaik , no helmet , necklace , armor etc as artifact..

4 legs would be interesting because most people will go for standart humanoid style. a draconinc 4 leg style will pull attention for sure ;)

My idea for my character is an ancient demon hex beast that has come through a wormhole to other realms to drive back other races from attacking his realm. His race has an ancient artifact of a skull helm with a large crystal horn that invokes dark energy to attack his opponents.

Let me know if you have any suggestions of things to add... I started the concept painting only been working on it for an hour because of me constantly deleting thigns change the colors and so on. All feedback is appreciated :)

Yup, I wouldn't mess with one of those. ;)
You've got some nice elements on each image, maybe try combining some o them

#1 : I like the Spines and the back armour (if that is armor, the gold bits)

#2 : I like the Head with the big horns and the semi-winged forearms

#3 : The glowy bits rock!! You have to have that in your final, whatever it is!

#4 - Head closeup : Love the eyes. Very freaky. Although the thin tongue is bothering me. I think it detracts from the overall aggressive feel of the head. But then again, it could also offset it. Looks amost like a feeding tube. Bloody demon doggies.... ;)

Hahahaha! Thank you so much, yes I was planning to add all the different parts of what I thought was cool in each sketch the glowing thigns, the gold plate armor, and fix the spines on the demon creature. What do you think I should do to the tongue get rid of it? Make it thicker?

Last post for the night I am tired and my eyes are probably bloodshot from staring at the screen all day. I know I didn't get very far for almost 12 hours of work but 3 quick concept sketches which led to my final idea and started my full concept sketch is what I have right now.

I hope you enjoy my hex demon now has an acid reflux problem.....

looking good.

I think that it would be ice to give the creature more of an underbite. The scale pattern and the plating is going to be important. Might be nice to do something other than a reptile scale pattern.

Hmm yeah better stick with 2. Like those mind controlling cats from Japanese folklore ^^

Work on the silohette alot, cause the normal will take care of most of the small details. The head will be your focus point so try and concerntrate your design there. Try and have no more then one main focal point.

Flux is onto somthing there. I think an underbite would look good.

Oh, and a Practicle aspect of the head design that may or maynot need some work depending on what you want :
The horns on the head should be "wider" (further away from the sides of his head) or shorter (ending before the tip of his mouth.

'Cos at the moment, he's gonna find it pretty hard to bite on something cos the horns will get in the way.

Unless he's gonna lick them! Hahahah! "How dare you call me a Pig Dog!? I speet on you !"

Thank you all for your advice you can be expecting a new picture post soon with a larger underbite and the horns farther away from his mouth and I will add more detail to the head to make it more interesting. Any suggestions for head details?

For head details I think thick nerves will look good, also from his nostrils U can show blue or green Glowy smoke comin out.

Damn man, a freaking dragon? Lol... Very nice idea.
Head detail wise, I think you should keep it simple. The 3 lines you have on his head is a bit distracting for me. If you can get a clear view of his head, it'd be great.

Thank you all for your advice I am sorry about the delay I just got back from work I am immediantly starting fixing the concept making him have a larger underbite, shortening his horns, and clearing up the lines on his face. Let me know what you guys think when I get the new Hex Demon image posted. :)

Okay I extend the lower jaw, shortend the horns, got rid of the lines in the face, and added green smoke to his nostrales.

Thoughts on color arrangements? Is there a way in texturing or zbrush to make a character look feathered or furry cause that is what I origniallly wanted for this character to make him seem more like a demon and less like a dragon but I don't know how exactly I would do that with textures or zbrush??

The wings are cool but I think the fur should be left off. Try giving him something like scales instead, they are easier and wont break your poly budget. Also they come out nice on the bump map :)

I've seen so many creatures with scales though I wanted tot ry and do soemthing different. I only wanted to do the fluffy parts with alpha'd planes but there must be a way to fake it in zbrush and texturing as well?

i quite like the idea of a furry dragon, quadart did a tutorial on texturing short fur that looks quite good here it is

Hey Xarxys, I think your dragon just keeps getting better! THe current design reminds me of deep sea fish, for which I searched reference for my Strange Behaviour entry. There are some scary looking ones out there, I'll tell ya! :D
The fur could be faked with alpha'd planes, as you suggested, but don't cover the entire body because of the poly budget.

Thank you I am glad you like it and yeah I wasn't planning on doing the whole body in fur just the neck and the back. The rest of the body is going to be scaled. I was goign to do alpha planes for the "fluffier" areas and then fake it with texture and normal maps for the rest of it.

You've been improving! I see you still enjoy dragons. This one looks especially mean- I'll have to agree with the deep-sea sentament. The lit tentacles remind me of bio-luminescent fish (like the Angler).

My only crit is that the artifact is not incorporated into the design as a whole very well. His helmet seems to be a seperate add-on when I feel it should be a more holistic creature-item design- they should compliment into a unified whole.

Great work so far! Keep it up.

Some really great progression. I like the 3 eyes detail. I think the horns should be rotated round and scalled up. As it stands the horns are more defensive than offensive, look at all the horned creatures you can find, their horns point outwards not inwards. Apart from that your doing fine.

I'll look into other creatures horns and see if there is something I like. I was building the horns as more of an aestitic thing than working thing though.

Groovy! Getting the hands dirty! :)

First suggestion before you get too far along, the hind quarters should actually be as large (muscular) as the front, if not more.

Well, thats based on the general anatomy of quadrupeds. If your little bugger is meant to be a "tough" beast, then maybe get some big cat reference (I'd recommend Lion, Tiger and Leopard in that order).

And if he's meant to be more slim/lithe then maybe a cheetah or cougar.

I just did a quick scribble on this here tiger (see attachement) ;)

Model looks good:). For artifact, model some thing which will be attached to his body, like a part of his body. Or may be tied up with some kind of chain. Below is the link to a ref image.
