first update
been drawing for a whille and figured i'm gonna do a sort of human-tiger-ish warlord with an ice bladed ballista and he's gonna be called whitestorm. it still needs a hell lot more details but the basic shapes are there. here's his story and his first sketch:

(sorry for my bad english  )

"The frozen planet of polarticus was once a peaceful land, home of the icyclaws (a human-tiger-ish race), until they had their frost orb, which was their main source of power and also provided protection from the rays of the red sun from melting and destroying their planet, stolen by their enemies. In a final attempt to rescue their orb, whitestorm, the mightiest warlord of the icyclaws, led his troops to reclaim the stolen object to save his planet. Indeed whitestorm managed to recover the orb, but it was too late, since the only troop he had left was his loyal wizard and friend tigeroz. The wizard, seeing no escape for both of them, cast a powerful spell that attached the power of the orb to whitestormís bladed crossbow. The spell took the entire wizardís power, leading him to his death, but the icyclaw warlord was no longer a normal soldier, for his crossbow now had all the power of the frost orb, which was now bound to his body and his body, was bound to the orb. With such an immense power he killed all the remain enemy troops that were threatening his home, and swore that he would never rest until destroy every single planet that once defied their kingdom. "

C & C are very welcome!

hi, really cool concept! the only thing I dont like is the fur, fur is for girlies :D

02 February 2008, 12:48 PM
Looks dandy :)

Two things from the top of my head. What happens to the tusks when he moves his legs and the skis could look a bit more practical ;)

02 February 2008, 06:32 PM
thanks a lot guys!
about the fur i think ur right so i removed part of it but i still left some at the back of his neck so its gonna look like its coming out of his skin
Pixelbear i agree with u about the tusks, i'll have to figure a way to fit it in there without messing with his legs. about the skis i was thinking like they were more like some sort of artificial claws coming out of his feet, that explains why i didnt go for more normal skis.

Been playing a little bit with the colors and also decided that i'm gonna do a secondary weapon, a spear or something, just to keep his left hand busy. again C & C are welcome!

I really like the concept. Looks sweet. Can't wait to see more. Tusks look great but they do seem to be in the way. What about moving them to the shoulders, or knee for armor details.

02 February 2008, 09:34 PM
Nice color work. I am thinking the skis would get in the way tho in some fights.

02 February 2008, 07:44 PM
I agree with QuantumPixel skis are really too long, might be inconvenient in action.
And fur is great, I'd use it more on hands perhaps, but what bothers me is how you'll model it afterwards?
Keep the good work going, white tiger and back eyes looks preatty cool!

02 February 2008, 07:58 PM
Those ice crystals look awesome!

02 February 2008, 08:12 PM
really nice design on this one. I will keep my eye on it for sure

02 February 2008, 08:17 PM
Killer concept Daniel! I enjoy the story as well. I will be watching very closely :D

02 February 2008, 10:11 PM
thanks a lot for the comments guys, i really appreciate it!
about the skis i'm thinking about some sort of latches so he can remove them in no time for battle in non-snow environments or flat places. i'll be doing some designs for the skis tonight when i get home. about the tusks i'm thinking about putting them more horizontally, i think it will be easier to figure that problem in the 3d process though so i'll leave it like that for now. if the tusks dont work i'll just put a belt. again thanks for the tips! i'll be posting updates soon

ps: digi_est, the fur will just be polygons with a transparency map on it. vbmenu_register("postmenu_4957295", true);

02 February 2008, 01:36 AM
Hey man! That's a pretty cool, stylish guy! I like the ice crystals and design details on his chestplate. If I had any suggestions for the 3d final it'd be mostly the posing, the left leg looks a tad awkward, especially in silhouette. Also, a bit more fine detailing on the feet and hands would make it improve three-fold!

May the streets run red with the blood of our enemies, the polycounters!!

For Freedom! For Justice! For Cgtalk!

02 February 2008, 06:14 AM
more updates
first, i've solved the "tusks problem", now they're gonna be 2 separete pieces hanging from his belt and are gonna be used for climbing (i did a quick sketch in the second picture below to show how's gonna work: the artifact goes to his back and his skis go to the back of his belt). i changed the red armorplate as well dividing them in several plates, to give him mobility in the torso. i've changed the artifact a little bit (still have to work more on it thought) and added glowy markings on his robe and on his wristband. ive also done some ski designs and would like to hear your opinions to figure which one to give him:

Looks awesome, I like the whole idea. I would probably pick 3 on the skis, because they're still visually appealing but probably more practical than 4, which looks awesome but seems like they'd break peices off while skiing alot of times haha. 2 wouldn't be bad either but 3 would be my pick.

02 February 2008, 11:55 PM
good point eMysfit, i've asked to some of my friends and they told me the same thing about the skis. it's probably gonna be number 3 then. now the last update before the modeling part, it might be a bit early to start modeling but i wanna spend as much time as possible plusing and polishing the character untill i'm really happy with it so i'm gonna start my basemesh very soon! so the update is the design for the artifact, which is a magic bladed crossbow that shoots ice arrows with no strings. the hand of the character goes inside of it to control it. waiting for replies!
By dmightyone ( at 2008-02-21

02 February 2008, 10:02 AM
I like it. Does the ice crystal replenish the ice arrows too? So no reloading and endless ammo!? I could see it in game as the more levels he gets the more ice arrows per shot and faster replenishment, that'd be pretty cool. By the end of the game shooting like 10 arrows at a time in rapid like shooting an uzi...but with magic arrows haha.

02 February 2008, 10:07 AM
that's exactly right man, you totally got it!!! right now im working on the basemesh and will be posting it soon

02 February 2008, 01:45 PM
Awesome Concept, it is a pleasure visiting Ur thread:cool: All the best Dude:thumbsup:

02 February 2008, 06:28 PM
the ski idea is awesome dude.also the colors look rock on! :buttrock:

02 February 2008, 02:17 AM
thanks a lot for the comments guys, im really happy to read that!
now a quick update of a simple basemesh to block out the basic shapes, feel free to critique or comment!

hey daniel wheres the updates of the sculpting man?? want to see what youve got cooking after today

02 February 2008, 12:08 PM
nandlaskar:thanks a lot for ur support man, and yes lets kick some ass this year!!!

mat: hahahah sorry man i almost forgot, dont have much done, been mostly working on the head, but it's coming. here it goes:
By dmightyone ( at 2008-02-26

the weird hole on the stomach is for placing the orb later, but haven't worked on it yet. cheers!
C & C are welcome!

02 February 2008, 01:33 PM
damn.. thats tremendous stuff..
the concept sheets r awesome.. great work. nice detail on the face too

02 February 2008, 02:52 PM
awesome sauce daniel :D the face has got some great stern character in it can see that you have put some solid work into it. the chest and shoulders are nicely done too its just there is something a bit odd with the back, looks like hes got some more abs going on behind him there and the crease line going down his back is quite prevelant. but other than that its gold son keep up the good work

02 February 2008, 12:01 PM
samarcbz: thanks a lot dude, your stuff is really amazing!

mat: thanks for pointing that out man, today i've been mostly focused on the body so i fixed some anatomy problems and worked on the kilt as well, here's an update:
By dmightyone ( at 2008-02-27

C&C are very welcome!!!

02 February 2008, 12:56 PM
your concept art is amazing, I'm a lot into the idea. WIP looks amazing, only comment is I liked the older hole in the belly better because it had this broken look to it, it looks like he had some kind of ceremony in which the broke all the bones to create space for the orb.

And to my opinion this needs a rather raw look not that manufactured style the second version has.

Looking forward to new versions

02 February 2008, 03:41 AM
hey daniel, the update looks totally rockin the back is looking alot better now :) and his skin has nice fleshy tenseness feel to it. i really like the work on the kilt too. i like what youve done with the crystal chamber as it looks as though its been specifically built to house a precious piece
i did a little bit of psing just to show a few things i would personally change to make the front look a little less stiff, feel free to ignore them though

be good to see the feets and hands done too in the next update :)

02 February 2008, 03:49 AM
the modelling looks sweet so far, but something's bugging me about the big hole in his gut. i think it's the way it's just cut right out of him. i think it would work better if at least the belt and kilt had some kind of border around the hole, unless it's supposed to look that way and you've already explained it in an earlier post...

02 February 2008, 04:31 AM
Looking good man, one suggestion, I think the belt should stick out more from the body, it looks very painted on at this point, it would be nice to see the cloth break up the sillouette some.

keep it up, looking good

02 February 2008, 09:06 AM
I think this is my favorite of the 3d entries I've seen so far. Looking great.

I'd hate to be a machine(or from another team) when this guy comes through.

02 February 2008, 10:37 AM
samarcbz: thanks a lot dude, your stuff is really amazing!

C&C are very welcome!!!

Look HE is asking for C&C. I don't have any C&c's, I'm so Rookie in Z-brush:)
This looks Awesome:thumbsup:

02 February 2008, 12:39 PM
Great sculpt, indeed. Nothing to add by now, anatomy looks great and very solid

I must to say I'm not a fan of the hole on his belly... And by now I think he looks kind of generic mega-musculous character. But let's see the next steps, I believe you'll make the difference.

02 February 2008, 01:09 PM
great sculpt . its commin out awesome.
if u just aqueez down the waist a bit , its goona look more cool. just a suggestion :D

02 February 2008, 09:15 AM
Dude, I have to say I love the feeling of your character climbing that icy mountain.
Very powerful!

02 February 2008, 09:41 AM
aendschl: thanks a lot man, about the hole on his belly i like it that way too, but i still like better the crystal chamber look because like freesupra said, is like it was built to house a precious piece. also it's gonna be partially hidden by armor and by the magical orb so i'll see what i do after putting the armor on him. again thanks a lot!

ScudzAlmighty:yeah i know what you mean, because of that there's gonna be an small plate that's gonna connect the belt and the kilt.thanks!!!

RedFish: thanks for pointing that man, problem fixed!! i'll be posting sth soon where u can see the difference. thanks a lot!!!:)

eMysfit: thank you very much man! feel great to hear that, i'm trying my best! thanks!!!

madshooter:thanks man!!!

jramauri: thanks man! yeah he's still looking a little too generic at this point. the differences are gonna show up more when i start adding the accessories and textures. thanks a lot!
valeu ai cara, seus trabalhos sao todos otimos! muito bom ver a brasilerada mandando ver nesse concurso!!!

samarcbz:yeah i thought about that too, but i've decided to play more with it after i add the armor cause i can see how it fits better. thank you very much, your stuff is developing really amazing and i'm watching!

naidoomahen: thank you very much!

updates soon!

02 February 2008, 12:20 PM
Pretty solid looking model so far. Good stuff!

02 February 2008, 01:50 PM
HI friend!
I just viewed your thread today and like it very much. This latest model is very well executed and the exagerated proportions is giving the character a colossal looking. Well, t heres a similarity among your concept and mine because of the tiger thing. My character will have some tiger characteristics on it. Is a challenge to put togheter different races. so have fun, and good luck!

02 February 2008, 07:14 PM
yoyo: thanks a lot!!!

gu: no problem man dont worry about that!

now a small update. i've put some parts of the armor together just to clear things about the whole belly thing. still have a lot of work to do especially in the armor pieces, but just wanted to show everyone my progress so far, so there it goes:
By dmightyone ( at 2008-02-29

02 February 2008, 07:31 PM
Wow, great update! With it you eliminate the weirdness I was feeling about the hole and pratically put that generic look away. He looks very powerful and well constructed now. Good job, fellow.

02 February 2008, 07:35 PM
Great job on the sculpt, can't wait to see more! :D

02 February 2008, 08:50 PM
damn thats kickass...
really nice sculpt hez lookin heavy n badass..
great stuff.
probably one of my best entries.....

02 February 2008, 09:28 PM
Excellent! I love the stomach.

02 February 2008, 11:51 PM
Awesome model, but the head looks small in comparison to the body.

03 March 2008, 12:51 AM
Thats a great concept and some really good modelling, your anatomy on the model is top-notch. The only thing i would suggest is to slim down his ankles, it seems a little to bulky. The concept pics kind of suggest he's nimble and the extra weight in the lower leg goes against that.
Keep it up its lookin good.

03 March 2008, 01:30 AM
awesome update:thumbsup:

i'm going to have to be really nittpicky here, cause there's very little to complain about...
the stance feels a little stiff, i can see what you're going for with it, but it's just slightly off, maybe it's the angle of legs, if they were bent a little more inwards? or if the torso wasn't so straight, his shoulders feel hunched so the belly should be a little as well. try standing like that and maybe you'll see what i mean. but really, i'm reaching for something to crit here.
good update:thumbsup:

03 March 2008, 12:04 PM
Your character is a technical achievement. Wonderful modelling  One thing comes to my mind though, when I look at the concepts. One time you show your character climbing. Is this your characters preferred environment to move in? Because with all that heavy flesh, muscles and bones he looks rather heavy and not like a typical "climber" to me.

03 March 2008, 09:05 AM
jramauri, loukor, samarcbz, stacyogie, dmonk: thanks a lot you guys!

mdr: you'r right, but as i started modeling i figured he had to have more robust legs since he's gotta carry his armor, gear and himself. thanks!

scudzalmighty: thanks a lot man and you totally right about the stance, i'm nota gonna fix that at this point because i think it'll be easier to do that in the lowres version :D , but again thanks a lot!

martinnielsen: wow thaks a lot man! about the climbing thing the answer is no, that's not his favorite environment, his favorite place to be is downhill in hi-speed battles with his skis. although he might find himself in some climbing situations, so thats why i prepared him with some gear.

at the moment i'm finishing detailing the skis and the artifact and will be posting them soon, here is a small update with everything else:
By dmightyone ( at 2008-03-05

03 March 2008, 09:17 AM
awesome work

03 March 2008, 11:33 AM
this character is awesome! :buttrock:

03 March 2008, 11:53 AM
Oh, one more thing: Those horns in front of him seem to be a limitation of his movement :p

03 March 2008, 11:56 AM
Beautifull, looks great:thumbsup:

03 March 2008, 12:43 PM
Just thought I'd say again how freakin cool your character is! Which is uber fantastically cool.

Martin, I think the horns issue came up before. It doesn't look like they're attached to the body so it seems they'd just move freely flowing with his legs. I'm sure dmightyone will explain it better though!

The Flork
03 March 2008, 12:58 PM
i think it would be reall cool if the tusks where attached to his shoulders :-D

03 March 2008, 03:44 PM
eMysfit: I just needed to bring it out. :D

03 March 2008, 04:26 PM
OMFG! thats looks badass man
awesome detailing..
keep goin dude u can WIN !

03 March 2008, 05:17 PM
Great design, he looks really mean, but I dont think the horns on his legs is a good idea, it makes it seems hard to walk....maybe you could change it to something more organic:)

03 March 2008, 07:41 PM
wow daniel youve been hard at work on him. is looking great man congrats :D the armour looks damn cool. but i have to agree that the horns look a bit weird around the waist, they just dont seem to add anything to the character for me anyways. and looks like theres a few strange brush strokes on his back, dunno if there intentional but
cant wait to see some colour too

03 March 2008, 08:11 PM
Coming out nicely
Just thinking abt the detailing on his shoulder all looks gud

03 March 2008, 01:32 AM
dude, niiiice:thumbsup:
starting to agree about the leg horns there, it's cool if they move with his legs, but the way they are right now you don't really get that impression, it's more like "but how does he sit down?"

now put some love into his back

03 March 2008, 02:14 AM
hey guys thanks a lot for all the suggestions and comments, iit's been really great to have your support! about the tusks problem it already came up before and like emysfit (dude you know this character almost better than i do!) said, they'd just move freely flowing with the legs, i'm gonna put a bucle or latch there to show that better. about the shoulderpad I did add more details on it but i'll have to put a little more.

now more updates! started to work on the texturing, mostly on the armor and blocking out some colors for the rest. still need to put more wear and tear on the armor and put a lot more work in the spec and everything else, but that's a start:

That's because I AM THIS GUY!!! Nobody knows it, but I have giant ice crystals on me, climb walls with tusks and shoot endless ice arrows with this artifact thing I found one day. I love to ski with my badass skiis too.

JK haha. I do really like the character though. And I'm glad to see you making some decent progress on it!

03 March 2008, 02:08 AM
thanks man!!! yeah i guess that must be it, you are him heheheh! ok more updates, been working a lot in the texturing but still have a lot to tweak, seams to fix, lighting to setup etc... but its coming! so far no problems with the polycount, including the weapon (that i'm still gonna start texturing) i think i have aroung 80 tris left. enough said, here it goes:
By dmightyone ( at 2008-03-19

03 March 2008, 11:39 AM
Nice to see something fully textured  You did a good job on this.

03 March 2008, 12:50 PM
nice texturing! But the face looks like he's a Kiss fan

, :)))) you did body more blue-black and the face white-black :)

03 March 2008, 10:46 PM
hey man, good work, my only crit is that you have so much detail loss in the black armor. I mean if ya look at it up close it looks great but from a distance it doesnt read at all. I would suggest some contrast to the etching :) either way, good work its good to see so much progress.

03 March 2008, 02:22 AM
Hey there. Its looking good so far. Youve done quite a bit and i see a lot of balancing issues. It seems likes it kinda all over the place concept wise. and im not sure the proportions or some of the items really do justice for the character.

I took a few minutes to do a paintover to add and take away a few things i thought might help balance it out. the arms i added a couple gloves that can be used as sheilds too but they are meant to match the red of the rest of the armour but specifically the nice metal bits on the feet.

I made the crystals on his shoulder much bigger because they werent nice at that size. I added a lot more contrast throughout, making some things a lot brighter and darker so that certain parts would stand out more.

I took off the horns on the belt and the weapons on the feet because they just dont make sense to me and dont really seem very useful as armour or battle gear. just my opinion. I gave him a belt that would match his upper chest armour and put some more of the fur clothing throughout so it was even and nicer to look at.

i think at this point he just needs a really cool weapon. something fantasticly impressive so he stands out in the comp. hope i help and i hope i didnt offend you :)

03 March 2008, 05:41 AM
I agree with some of the critiques, but I think you should keep the horns
Great work!

03 March 2008, 09:10 AM
hey guys thanks for the comments and critics, i really appreciate it!!

digi_est: yeah i guess u'r right, he does look kinda like a kiss fan heheh, i've just added a little more blue to his face and looks better, thanks a lot!

kmanning: you'r right too man, i'm playing with the spec and diffuse right now to get a better contrast, thanks!

Rek0: you didnt offend me at all man, but the opposite, i really appreciate you took some time to go over my concept! really thanks a lot!!!
about my concept i'm going for a character that is both majestic and barbarian at the same time, so that's why he has both armor and rustic leather clothes. the paintover you did is taking kind of a different direction:
- about the gloves you did i really like them , i think it would fit really well in the character, i might add some with similar design on him.
- i totally agree with you about the crystals, in fact, i've just made them bigger and with more contrast and they do look better, i also like the silver edges on the black armor plate helping it to stand out more, i'll change that too
- the horns are actually part of his gear, they'r used for climbing and like i mentioned before, they are free to move with the legs, i guess i'll have to make it clearer by adding some big latches to it and i might use the idea of the belt design for these latches. about the fur i like it but i think is a little too much fur.
- the things on his feet are skis( which also make him kinda stand out a bit from the others), also part of his gear since his favorite battle environment is going downhill on hi speed battles. i've also put some holders on his back so he can hang the skis there while he's on flat environments.

even though i didnt agree about some of the critics that doesnt mean that i didnt appreciate them,i really did! again thanks a lot for your time man! it really helped me a lot! wish i had even more people like you visiting my thread!

right now i'm working on the artifact (crossbow) and fixing and adding stuff in the character and i'll be posting something very soon, probably tomorrow. thanks a lot for all the support guys!

03 March 2008, 03:07 AM
no problem, my pleasure. Im happy you took some of them. i wasnt expecting you to take any so some is better than none. i think in the end this is your project and you have the final render in mind thus it is completely up to you where you go with it. good luck!

03 March 2008, 01:11 PM
more updates: this time is just a small test on the beauty shot and a shitty render of the crossbow, hope you guys like it, now i'm gonna take some sleep before the sun rises...:)

Looks cool. I'm glad to see you're on your way to the finish line. So many people tend to drop out or stop updating this late in the competitions.

Good Luck finishing up!

03 March 2008, 12:25 PM
To me he looks almost perfect. About the final pose, I think he looks too serious and static. You could give him more curvature to his spine, to make he looks more super hero - after all this is a war and power is what this is all about! I made a quick paintover using liquify and the traces I think should be enfatized, hope this be helpful.

Congrats for your great work! You really did it!

03 March 2008, 02:53 AM
emysfit: thanks a lot man, it's been great to have your support throughout the whole competition!

jramauri: I agree with that, i will change it for sure, thanks a lot for taking your time to do a paintover, i really appreciate that!!!

04 April 2008, 06:45 AM
more updates, probably the last one... i tweaked the lighting in the beauty shot and winning pose to give him more contrast and i also changed the pose and camera angles in the winning pose.i'll probably be submitting the shots really soon since i'm done. good luck to everyone and thanks for the support!:

hey man looking good, although the textures look a little blurry in your final shots for some reason, not a huge deal though

04 April 2008, 07:31 PM
thanks a lot for pointing that out man, my noob eyes didnt get that :D, it's not a huge deal but it makes a huge difference! already working on it! thanks again!

04 April 2008, 10:46 PM
ok i've updated the final shots fixed in the previous posts and finally submitted them, here's an example that it did actually make a big difference after fixed:

great work :D

Hey man I just want to say that the sharpness makes a big difference good job, nice model

04 April 2008, 06:19 PM
Small things make huge leaps foward. Looks even better. These competitions are great for getting little critiques like that. Part of the fun of them is the community participation!
