Hi guys,

I'm a recent graduate of the University of Hertfordshire in the UK. I produced this character model recently using 3dsmax and Zbrush 3.1 (plus Photoshop for textures). I also used the Nvidia normal map plugin for layering the normal maps with a bit of texture to enhance the surfaces. (the model is based on pictures of my dad, though he isn't a gangster, he just looks a bit dodgy, lol)

There are a few issues which I have seen whilst posting the thread... but comments and constructive criticism is welcome. (p.s. be nice, this is my first post on the messageboard) :) - i'll get some wires and detail shots up in the next few days.

Is the seam on the back of the jacket intentional? If not I'd consider fixing that. Other than that, not 2 bad.

Yeah, the seam is in place where the parts of the leather jacket i used for reference join up. I'll try to change it a bit, make it look more intentional.

Hi, looks pretty good but his whole lower body looks way too short. I'd just scale the legs down to make them longer. His head is too big for his body as it is too.

Personally I think it would look better without the seam. Just use the spot healing brush tool and u would be able to wipe that right out.

Hi, thanks for comments. :)

The legs are the length of my dad's legs, i was modelling from a full length photograph; the same goes for the head size. My dad just has short legs and a large head i gues, lol. Also, the jacket is quite long and hangs down over the waist, which gives the illusion that the legs are shorter then they are.

I'm going to make the seam a lot less prominent as suggested, will post more images soon.

Hey there,the model is nice.I do think that there are some proportion problems but again,it might be your dad so im not sure :D
Anyway i think the jacked has too much shadowing painted wich makes it look fake.
The face is nice though.
Hands look like they are not part of the body,mostly because the shading is very different from the face.
Overall its a good model.I'd like to take a look at the wires so i can give you better crits on it.

Hey the model looks great, has a real grand theft auto concept art feel to it very painterly but realistic(its a good thing lol).
Im just wondering what you used to render it with and what type of lighting you used. Thanks.

OutlawIIIWolf: I'm rendering using Mental Ray for 3dsMax 9, the lighting setup is 3 point lighting with a non-renderable plane underneath to bounce the lighting slightly (using Final Gather). Then I created an Ambient Occlusion pass and composited it in using Photoshop.

I'm learning to use some viewport rendering software at the mo, as i feel its more relevant to the games industry. I learnt render techniques on the digital animation degree I took.
