Hello, I'm quite new in 3D animation, and I got a big problem on my first try to do the setup of a head...
So, I'll try to explain you what's the matter.
First I was working on this and I was quite satisfied of the progress of the skinning. So I decide to export my skin weight maps in case of a bug appears later. Great idea because yesterday it happens! I don't know why ( of course I think it's my fault...) but all the skinning disappear! No other files, no autosaves...
So now I try to re-import my skin maps but it don't works. I follow maya's help but I can't find what's the matter... Names of objects and joints hierarchy are the same but it still don't works. It always do a bad thing like that:
So is there a solution? something I forget ? or is it possible I've done a bad exportation??? Please help me because if not I must to begin an other time from the start, and it represents a lot of work for a begginer like me...
Thanks for help

Make sure your that the head you are exporting from and the head that you are exporting to have the same UV Layout ( non-overlapping UVs, between 0 and 1). Skin weight export/import in Maya is UV dependent by default. If you have problems with UVs, search on highend3d.com for appropriate MEL scripts. There are a few that work very well and are easy to use.

i too am new to weighting in maya and i've been using the mel suite from michael comet. it has a great importer/exporter of skin weights and i don't believe it is UV dependent like maya's internal one. i've been using the mel script suite in maya 2008 with no problems so far. while i'm rigging, everytime i adjust the weights i save out a new file and so far i've been able to import it back onto a clean version of the head very easily.
