View Full Version : stylized sketch/cell shade render

Hi guys, I'm new here (and to Maya in general). I'm curious to know if i'd be able to achieve a render similar (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29092.html) to this (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29813.html) using maya and how i'd go about achieving it. I've googled some but only find simple cell shadeing tutorials, but nothing that looks similar to this (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29092.html).
Here's an image of the kind of rendering i'm asking about. The images don't really capture the effects so please check out the video (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29092.html) to really understand what kind of rendering is being done (FYI it's an upcoming PS3 game by Sega, videos are in all Japanese :( )
I'm still in the learning phase so i don't mind just being pointed in the right direction on where to look to figure this out myself. Any help would be appreciated.

Use the mental ray for Maya Contour Shader ;)

But how do i get those sketch lines? I haven't seen how to use it to create a sketched look. All i see is how to make it look like your typical saturday morning cartoon cell shade look... but not with comic type sketch lines.

Check the Maya Toon samples in the Visor. The examples definitely won't knock you off your socks, but if you analyze the shaders closely, they should point you in the right direction.
That said, a huge part of the painterly effect in the last video you posted is done through hand painted textures with the addition of some post-processing - you won't achieve this effect with shaders alone.

You might also take a look at this (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=564621) thread. Still the setup for creating the scetch lines as shown in the trailer is much easier. You could do this as a post effect using a noise or monochromatic grain with directional blur multiplied over the shadow areas of your image.
