View Full Version : Edgar's Lip Sync

OK, so here is yet another animation I've pulled from the vault and began to polish up for your viewing pleasure. I'm really trying to put togther a solid character reel so I'll definitely need a nice lip sync piece and I think this is a really great line from the late but brilliant, Mitch Hedberg.

I've started to block in his movements and smooth them out a bit but they still need some sweetening. Also the back third remains untouched for the most part but I plan on remedying that situation this weekend. Please, let me know what you think or what I could possibly add to really make this piece stand out.

Aside from the work I put into this animation before, this is my first and only lip sync piece so I need all the tips/pointers/ideas/suggestions/C&C's/praise/money I can get. So please dont hold back and give til it hurts. Many thanks! 4.9Mb

It feels really stiff right now and the character doesn't have a lot of life. I would work on your poses and try and get more personality in him. Also the line is obviously a stand up comedian in front of a crowd so I'd put him on a stage with a mic, you could get some nice interactions with the mic stand or have him walk around on the stage, instead of feeling constrained like he is now.

Hi, Banks
Watched your animation, I hope this is just the first pass, cause it feel so stiff..
I think you should act it out some more, give him some attitude, personality and try not to make a hold for too long, or it would look dead..
I agree with Kyle, I think it's better if you make him on stage.

Keep animating.. :)

Alrighty! So obviously it's been quite sometime since my last update. I've been exceedingly busy @ work and moving into a new apartment. I wanted to post my most recent update I've been working on with this character. I took you alls advice and put him in a stand up comic scenario with a mic and sweetened the rendering pass. Let me know what you think now.

Your lip sync animation improved greatly since your first post. I still feel that the mouth shapes you've used could be more defined and exagerated a bit. As it is now it seems like you have the jaw opening and closing without the use of the basic mouth shapes.

I wrote an article on lip sync animation that you might find useful:

no offense, but your article is really vague and you've listed the steps backward. everyone has their own approach, but i don't know a single animator that starts with the lip sync and facial expressions and goes from there. finaling the characters face before animating their body can be very dangerous. for me, in most cases the body animation will dictate to me what the character's face should be doing. where they should be looking, what expression they should have. not the other way around. i'm not necessarily saying that your approach is wrong, but in most cases it will probably cause more work for the animator. just my two cents. :)
