View Full Version : UGAC – IV – Flame Sentry

I'm surprised more people didn't submit things for this. I guess you're all busy playing TF2. Anyway, here's what I made today, but keep in mind I haven't textured anything yet and I don't like the fire. Holes will be black, things will come out other things in a fairly realistic way and the "neck" will bend so I that's why I used so many polygons on it. The box actually comes apart so none of this is "faked"...all objects actually fit into eachother except for the legs and little flame things.

Very nice indeed, how did you do that fire effect?!

I used a flame thrower particle emitter I made in Particle Illusion, rendered out 2 frames with alpha maps, used those as textures on 2 planes in Max then added little things to the image in Photoshop at the end.

I actually wasted most of my time on those flames because I wanted to use FumeFX at first, then facing particles, so I did lots of test renders and it just didn't look good at I just stuck with the "2D" flames. Anyway, they're just for testing now, I can make nicer fire and it'll look better when animated.

Me neither - I haven't animated anything other than particles in ages!

Woohoo! I spent a couple of hours animating this baby and I'm fairly happy with it. I'm gonna render this overnight since I don't wanna not use my computer for an hour, hehe.

I might have to add some 2D effects on top of the flames since they don't look too great and then I'll just have to add a simple texture to finish it off.

I just need to improve the fire effect and texture this baby. It took 4.6 hours to render on a Q6600.

I can't believe there were so few entries for this contest either. You were spot on about too much TF2 and not enough modelling!

I really like the flame turret, would be cool to see it animated;)

I just need to improve the fire effect now. It took 4.6 hours to render on a Q6600 because of the GI. I'll slap on some 2D flames since I think the model and animation are the main parts. Also, I mapped it after animating it and I don't think I'll redo the animation for the textured version.

Only the untextured version is animated so I put an image of the finished version at the end of the video. I'll animate the textured one too if I have time.
