View Full Version : Natural Environment - WIP

Hey everyone, this is my first time posting artwork on here, so have at it! (Hopefully I didn't break any rules).

This is an environment, or part of an environment that I did for a class and eventually would like to turn into a true portfolio piece. I've gotten lots of valuable critiques already, but would love to know what everyone here thinks as well.

This scene came out to around 70,000 triangles, utilizing diffuse and normal maps. The scene was done in Maya and rendered with Mental Ray.

I rendered out a couple of images, but these two seem to be the best ones as far as composition and quality goes. ( (

hey, nice work.
I like it's pleasant lighting, balanced colors and good "shrekish" ambiance ;)

What I would suggest to make it better is add some touches to grass and bridge.

1) Grass. It could be more dense or be more organized, e.g. grouped in dense bunches. I prefere just more dense. With current gen (even with past gen ;) ) making so won't bother.

2) Bridge. It's main surfce looks too procedural. Some paving stones instead of a simple noise would make it look better. Also more variation of railing elements would help as well. This is an ancient/old bridge, so it can't be built of concrete ;)

I would also reduse bumpiness on terrain a bit.

Anyways, good job.

I like it. One thing though the coloring looks a bit bland to me. Add some sunlight on the right top side to liven it up. Dark shadows in the foregroud or dark contrast to separate things a little.
