11 November 2007, 11:01 PM
Hey all, for months now I've been wanting to start a doodle book here and for months I blew it off
I'm gonna start posting all kinds of crazy works finished, WIP, doodles, sprite work, etc
So I'm gonna start off with a few things. I hope you all enjoy them and thank you for looking. I'll be updating this as much as possible.
11 November 2007, 07:05 PM
i cant believe noone responded to this post before me, this is brilliant (o_O), i really like your sketches, those creatures at the top are great :) like that arms brain thingi :) hehe so cute :)
11 November 2007, 10:56 PM
thanks luk8- one of my favorite things in the world to draw is monsters/horror. actually the "tales from the crypt" comic inspired me to start drawing comic books.
They arent monsters but....

nice effort !
01 January 2008, 07:43 PM
newbie from the DSF thread
02 February 2008, 02:19 AM
Why haven't I seen this thread before?? I love your work, especially when you sit down and finish up a piece like that alien cat or the fisher-girl. I like the cat so much because it looks alien, but you didn't do the easy thing by making it a monster or mutant.
Your pencil work shows great control of line and shade.
Wonderful work and would love to see more finished pieces from you !
02 February 2008, 02:39 AM
Great work Gary!
I'm not particulary fond of your coloring, a bit too bland for my taste.
But I realy LOVE your drawings, these are great, you are a true master of the line.
02 February 2008, 05:25 AM
the night crawler looks great. everything else to of course, I just really like that one
02 February 2008, 10:54 PM
thank you all for your replies thus far. and Sarford you're right about my colors. I'm working on those for sure. If you have any suggestions (websites, tutorials, etc) on color please let me know.
09 September 2008, 10:05 PM
newbies- sorry, it's been a while since i've been on here. Question: is the WIP thread the only place i can post doodles?
09 September 2008, 10:13 PM
Oh wow these are really great! I really like your style, it's very fun and well executed. To answer your question, no they should probably be posted here http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=271
But I could be wrong, I'm quite new myself.
09 September 2008, 07:22 AM
Yes, I would say this is rather a sketchbook since you have a multitude of pictures and not just one. But since you started the thread before the subforum for skechbooks were created nobody can blame you. Maybe the administrators will move it sooner or later.
Now to the important part. You have really nice stuff, I am very impressed. I especially like your skribbles. In my eyes they are amazing. How do you build up your characters when you start a new one. Do you use a simplyfied skeleton? If yes how does it look like?
Looking forward to see more from you.
09 September 2008, 08:16 PM
Algorithmic- thanks man. i try to experiment with a lot of different techniques. I'm gonna try and post more stuff by the end of the week so keep your eyes open :)
TedNindo- Thanks for the props man. :) I do usually start with a directional line ( to show the flow of the illustration ) then i work on the foundation(skeleton). I'll post some examples of how I work. :)
thanks again for the support
09 September 2008, 08:21 PM
WIP- I may repaint this though
09 September 2008, 01:36 AM
I was digging through some old files and found a WIP and a couple of fast doodles :) enjoy
09 September 2008, 01:41 AM
oh- one more
09 September 2008, 06:31 PM
Gary, very cool stuff man, i remember seeing a couple of your daily sketch entries a while back. Your drawings are quite fluid and full of character, i'd like to see more finished stuff but i understand this is more of a sketchbook. That Night Crawler WIP could really be something if you finished the coloring. Keep it up!
09 September 2008, 08:01 PM
hehe fun stuff! i especially like the tiger :)
09 September 2008, 06:15 PM
Thanks guys. Rabid1 I've seen your stuff as well, and you've got the skillz to pay the billz :) . Here are some newbies

newbie- concert poster for Green Jelly
11 November 2008, 10:06 PM
Hey All, (criket sounds) lol
Here's a friday the 13th WIP
On the top, I plan on adding the Friday the 13th logo (classic version) with a nice little blood trail in the water.
12 December 2008, 08:31 PM
12 December 2008, 05:40 AM
Nices updates man very clean appealing stuff, no blood trail on the last one? A bright red-orange would really pop off the page. Also, you could push the low-lit greenish light more, maybe accent the trees... just a suggestion? Looking foward to more.
12 December 2008, 07:57 AM
your work is awesome, can not say how much I love it. How do you manage to work so clean. Not one image looks rushed or untidy!
12 December 2008, 09:04 PM
Thanks rabid1. yeah I havent finished the piece yet. there will be a blood trail for sure. It's jason, i cant pass that up lol. I'll definately bring out the green under cast as well.TedNindo-thank you. i try to keep most of my stuff clean. i use to do comic work so i'm kind of set in that habit

01 January 2009, 09:08 PM
Wow I love your Lines, its so clean and perfect looking. Especially the Girl with bat/demon wings :D
01 January 2009, 09:32 PM
thank you. I use a photo non reproductive pencil (which is normally a light blue) to do my roughs then i go over it with an H pencil or something slightly darker. then i just scan it clean it and color it.
01 January 2009, 05:56 PM
i made a GIF image of the demon gal. Enjoy
01 January 2009, 08:34 PM
DSF Entry: Pirates vs. Ninjas
01 January 2009, 10:47 PM
Hey Gary, i really like that GIF demon chick its fun watching the progression. That red blood-like splatter stuff seems a bit excessive maybe? Man those inks are sweet too, it makes me want to get back into that stuff.
01 January 2009, 10:43 PM
thanks rabid1. I'm gonna post another version of the demon girl without blood and cleaner linework.
but for now...
01 January 2009, 10:44 PM
bloodless with new linework
01 January 2009, 11:30 AM
hey Gary as you may now I really like your work but for now I have some things that bother me :). The hair in the good morning painting looks a bit like a wigg and I guess its because the hair do not give and shadow onto the face. It looks as if you had painted them after every thing else. The highlights are very close to the hair where should be shadow. The other thing is that I just don't like (personal gusto) the way you shaded the hair, with this thin lines I think that a rougher shading would fit the painting much more.
02 February 2009, 01:23 AM
Thanks for the advice TedNindo.

WIP- I cant wait to color this
04 April 2009, 11:35 PM
Hell yes Gary! You're pumping them out now...love the colors and linework! You got the western theme nailed down...that Queen of the Rocketmen piece is outstanding. The only thing buggin me is the crop on that Ghost Buster's piece. He is suppose to be holding that ghost-gun right at the viewer no? If there was just a bit more space on the left side of the image i think it would read a lot better....i know those are timed sketches. Anyway glad to see new stuff from you keep it up!
04 April 2009, 10:05 PM
Thanx Rabid1. Here's an update
04 April 2009, 11:35 PM

04 April 2009, 02:29 PM

09 September 2009, 02:55 PM
Thats an amazing difference Gary.
09 September 2009, 03:32 PM
Hey Gary, i agree with MattU that revised piece is much improved from the older piece. The overall tone is much more dramatic and colorful! That Freddie dream DSG is great too...i love teh style treatment and its just plain cool. You must be getting motivated with Halloween around the corner...and your love of horror charcters.
Glad to see the new work, keep rocking man!
10 October 2009, 07:19 AM
thanks guys :) Yeah I'm getting super stoked that halloween is around the corner also, there's a new Nightmare on Elm Street movie coming out. Its going to be sweet.

10 October 2009, 05:26 AM
Thank you guys so much. I enjoy having visitors. :)
this is something I started months ago then stopped working on and I finally finished it tonight. My two favorite things "star wars" and "zombies"
I may do some more of these in the future. I might do some swamp thing concepts, MATTU was saying I should take a stab at it so why not. :)
10 October 2009, 05:12 AM
A new one I did today call "gingerbread nightmare" I did have a video of the whole process but the video flipped out so i had to delete it. :( but, never fear I still have the art.
10 October 2009, 10:11 AM
Haha, The Star Wars zombies are great and Jabba is disgusting as always.
10 October 2009, 11:07 AM
I just want to repeat what Vyse said before. The Zombie-Starwars stuff is very cool.
The only thing I don't like that much is the way you did jabbas arms, they look strange, I would prefere the conture the other way around going across the arm not with it.
10 October 2009, 08:42 PM
new one. I'll reply later. I'm off to get some food.
10 October 2009, 01:00 AM
Thanks guys. I used the action figure of Jabba from 1984. His arms kind of look like that :)
i did some random painting/sketch pages. very fun to do. :)
10 October 2009, 04:17 AM

01 January 2010, 04:50 PM
siiilon-Thank you so much. I always try to practice with "tight" and "loose" pencils since I'm originally from a comic background. It took about a year to break my super tight penciling habit.
Rabid1-Happy New Year to you too. I cant wait to see what you have in store as well. If you want, I can post a short tutorial in this forum on how I make sprites. They're really fun to do especially when you animate them.
Thank you both (and everyone else) for coming through. I'll post some more stuff soon.

Loving the Bucky O'Hare picture, along with pretty much the rest of your work! I like how your sketches just have a very loose feel to them, and the linework is great.
08 August 2010, 09:43 PM
Zilla4Rilla- thank you so much. I really try to keep my linework tight since I worked in comics for a while. I honestly like all styles and try to work in as many as i can. BTW- I really like your stuff too. Keep up the good work

Rabid1-Thanks man, yeah i've been really productive this month with both art and music. if I didnt know any better I'd swear art was more important than breathing.

10 October 2010, 08:20 PM
oops almost forgot.
10 October 2010, 04:24 AM
That last pinup is really nice. Great composition and very well executed.
In your phoenix piece, the poses seem a little stiff (too posed), which is killing the action feel of the work. Also, some rim light at the backside of the phoenix' right wing could bring back the focus a bit more to both characters face. Imho the weight is too much towards the eggs due to the high contrast in that area, and the lack of contrast in the area of the characters heads.
Another solution could be to add an extra light source (but a subtile one) from the front left.
Just thinking out loud ;)
Love the sketchbook scans too!
10 October 2010, 05:16 PM
NR43- Thanks man. Good eye, I'll definately keep that in mind. I guess thats what I get for starting a piece months ago and just now coming back to it. Thinking out loud is a good thing. Very helpful

03 March 2011, 05:04 PM
It's been a bit since I've posted on here. There has been a lot going on in the past couple of months. For starters, I just released a 118 page art book titled "Thawed" which you can get through Lulu.com. Last weekend, i had my first gallery showing in five years which was also my book release party. Below is a link to "Thawed" and how you can get it.
The other project I've been working on and will be released soon is my EP called "Kanye Twitty". It's Conway Twitty songs chopped up and remixed with Kanye West acapellas. It'll be a free album available for download soon. (More info to come)
M.E.O Podcast with Eric and Merr- Talking about "Thawed" and "Kanye Twitty" (at the end of the podcast is the first Kanye Twitty track ever released to the public
Now that i"m finished plugging here's some new art. I'll post pics from the gallery opening asap.

Hey! Awesome stuff!
I really like that painting called "the nightmare machine". Did you ever color it?
04 April 2011, 09:04 PM
Thanks Talaria, I never colored it because I saw it in a dream as a black and white image. So I kept it that way to keep the essence of what I saw.

07 July 2011, 01:20 AM
I've been following this thread for a while now, but damn man I can't stay silent for any longer.
Just looking through your work makes me want to work harder to become a better illustrator and artist.
Truly inspiring, and I hope you get your inspiration back before too long!
07 July 2011, 02:36 PM
Thank you both for the supportive words. It really means a lot. I've been drawing here and there and doing a bit of logo work but, I dont feel constrained like I did when I wrote my last message. Basically I just changed my mindset and it's working out quite well.
amantorn (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=180622)- I'm speechless. Thank you for following this thread and putting a fire under my ass

07 July 2011, 02:47 PM
Amantorn: Thanks again man. I'm getting back into the swing of things. I probably shouldnt stop doing art for as long as I did. Sometimes it takes a lot to get the ball going again especially when the odds are against you.
Enough of that here's some newer stuff. Enjoy

I'm looking to be inspired...what works for you? I've hit a big wall...I'm bored with the material I produce and the color choices etc. I'm looking for something bigger and better.
09 September 2011, 09:00 PM
music, but you know being a musician and an artist is a double edged sword, a blessing and a curse. Having to draw when you rather be playing/ spinning records :banghead: tricky, but gives you another outlet at the same time.
09 September 2011, 05:27 AM
Find a few really great artists and saturate yourself in their works and styles.. Or try a new medium.. Painting, Z Brush.. 3D...
09 September 2011, 09:09 AM
If there's a certain genre or style that I've been working in, I try to switch it up. Lately I've been working on a videogame-inspired piece, and I've been focusing on line art, but I think I feel similar to you - because I've been working on it for a good bit, I'm hitting a wall. So today, I worked on some other pieces but decided to go with a more painterly style and changed subject matter, which turned out well. I say just switch it up, but don't take a break. If you're making many finished pieces, try switching it up by practicing poses, study musculature, practice textures, fundamental stuff. Find artists whose look you like, and take aspects of their work for your own. Stay inspired - your artwork is great!
10 October 2011, 09:25 PM
Thank you all for the ideas you've suggested. I've been doing different styles and making my own brushes. It's been fun taking it slow and sharpening the blade. Thanks Again
10 October 2011, 07:42 AM
Looks good! I can sense a bit of a change in the pieces you just posted.
10 October 2011, 09:03 PM
Thanks Paterack, I'm wanting to find good workshops and tutorials (preferably free) to learn from. I recently gave a tutorial in St. Louis Mo. in digital painting and BOMBED HORRIBLY. So now I'm just wanting to learn and not teach others until I'm skilled enough to do so. I have a problem with misleading others when it comes to education. If any of you have any great links to share please post them.
