Hi there,

first time I actually post anything I've made on these forums but here's a new model of mine I started working on a few days ago. I'd appreciate some feedback on it before I move on to building up the lowpoly.

The character is from an anime called Darker Than Black, but I'm not aiming to do the character in an anime style but rather a realistic version.

Here's an update, started working on the lowpoly. It still needs optimization and not all parts are done, hoping to shed the components completed so far down to atleast 6k tris, since the coat and hair will most likely reach 2k tris in the end.

Another update, finished fleshing out the lowpoly and did some textures, gonna start trimming the hair next and then some optimization.

Not quite sure what to do about the coat, the lower part feels a bit too dull at the moment, any suggestions or feedback on it, or any other part of the model, would be great.

I like the char alot I think the coat needs alittle texture to it and the mask needs to be dirtied up a little bit but very cool
What is the belt around his leg for?
keep going looking forward to seeing the final result:thumbsup:

I've seen Darker than Black, good series..
But the face you have there looks a bit too old, and skinny for a young guy that's always in action.
He would generally have a little more muscle mass in his face, jaw, etc.

Sorry if I was too late on the crit.

Keep up the good work though, I want to see how it looks when it's done. =]

Good looking stuff there. Is that the finalized texture? There is plenty more texture work to be done it is a tad too bland at the moment. You might still be working on them though. Good job cheif!

Thanks for the feedback, I've done a quick test on how the mesh for the hair is working and it seems to be getting a decent enough shape, still needs work though, mostly texturing.
Also it looks a bit funky in the editor because the videocard messes up Maya's alphasorting, I've been told.

HughieDM: The belt is supposed to hold a little box and possibly his weapon, I can't recall now since it was a while since I watched the anime, will have a look to confirm the weapon. Gonna do some tests with dirtying up the mask, possibly bloodstains, and hopefully will make the coat a bit more appealing.

Kilarai: Didn't put much time into modelling the face since it will probably remain hidden 95% of the time when I put this character to use, if I find the time after everything else is finished I plan on doing a complete rehaul on it to get more resemblance towards the original character. I'll keep your comments in mind for then.

gsokol: The textures are just a first draft to get a feel for the colours and shades on him, though the pants, shirt and gloves are rather close to what I would be satisfied with, just lacks detail. The coat is far from finished, might have to throw my own into the scanner for a suitable cloth texture.

Another update:

Almost finished texturing, there's some specular work left and the coat needs some more detail.

Finally worked out how to rig this properly, not really used to maya so finding everything was a hassle. The coat turned out to work surprisingly well, but there's still some skinning issues I need to resolve (you can see a bit of it on the inside of the coat in the pic).

Also haven't started on his weapon and string-box for it yet, hopefully I'll finish up what's left during the weekend but seeing as how Guitar Hero 3 is out in a few hours that might be hard to pull off. :D

Any feedback on what I could change at this point would be appreciated.

Nice work, that last render reminds me of Neo, with a mask of course.

Big image ahead, feels like just about finished with him now, there are probably some minor skinning issues or rigging errors that I'll discover as I go along animating him for class, but far as the model and textures go I can't think of anything else to poke at at this moment, probably been staring at it for too long.

Anyway, here's a preliminary final shot composed of some grabs from the editor since I can't figure out how to get the normal maps to render properly in anything else (also why the alpha on the hair looks odd):

Any comments and critique for final touches greatly appreciated.
First game model I've actually completed with a working rig, sure got me achin for more. :D

Cheers and thanks for the critique I've gotten and any more I'll hopefully get :)

Ivos: You got too many textures on the model, that means, that it will have to be rendered in 5 batches.. that's pretty much for model like that.. i think, that one 1024x1024 would prove useful enough, if it will be main game character then you should think about 2048x2048.. well it depends on a usement of the model..
if the game will have + - 10 characters on the scene then you can leave it as it is now..
