View Full Version : Prop Critique: Runway Fuel Tank

Hey guys. I'd like to get some critiques on this prop. It is for the Goldeneye Source mod using the Source Engine. 750 tris and 1024 diffuse, normal, specular. It will be placed on the side of a runway that is covered in snow.

The texture looks like it is about 256-way blurry. I think the amount of layers is good, alot of dirt and grime going on, but you might want to sharpen certain aspects like the rust or oil streaks, or parts on the decals. A good start I think.

Mmm, it's pretty blurry. Try just running a sharpen pass on it in photoshop.

Good to see you're improving the materials for this prop. Do you have any photo reference? Right now your model is quite un-interesting simply because its lacking detail. Think about the prop - how does fuel get in and out of the tank? As well, whats protecting it from someone driving up and slamming into it? Chain link fence? Concrete poles? More detail. As well, think more about the wear and tear. The pipes all look clean, they are all perfectly straight, and where I would expect the most water / rust stains is where the pipes meet the main cylinder, not randomly on the sides. Water stains occur because there is something blocking the flow of water, thus causing a buildup. As far as the diffuse goes, it is low-res looking. A simple sharpen isn't' going to solve that either. Post some texture flats. I'd recommend higher rez source images, better tiling in your 1024 map, and more interesting spec. As well, you can usually get away by sizing your spec map to half the rez of your diffuse and save some memory. One thing to think about w/ the diffuse, is this fuel tank one giant piece of metal? Has it been riveted together? Think about using some rivets / seams to create some structure, so it doesn't look like a slab of metal / concrete, simply fashioned in that shape. Lastly, your normal isn't doing much, if anything.

This is a screenshot from the movie. As you can see, the original is pretty bland, so I'm not going to be following it too closely.
These were the only photo refs I could find of similar tanks.

Im new to this low poly stuff my self but here are a few questions I ask my self when I map UVs
what parts of this object absolutly needs to be diffrent from others?
where will this object be placed in the seen and are there parts of this object that the player will not see?
Then I tri and alow the max reselution to each surface and alot of times mirroring UVs just like you said before.
Just as GameDev same ad detail your useing the source engine I asume this is a static prop and static props can have pretty high poly counts...
Just some thoughts from some one new to low poly modeling
keep it up, cant wait to see more

Looks alot better but I feel like the normal is a little under used for the snow. I think the snow needs alittle more bump to it.
Heres a little ref as to what I mean
Also I think a specular map will help

Huge improvment it really looks fantastic now :thumbsup:
Only thing i dont like is the snow. I would say make it thicker at the moment it looks like somebody has gone over it with white spray paint in a light coat. Maybe adjust the the modelling aswell for the top of the tank, make it uneven like a heavy layer of snow has gathered on it.

I updated the images with increased bump on the snow. I didn't want to make it as bumpy as that image you posted though. If you look at the reference picture of the actual gas tank i'm basing this off, it only has a faint dusting of snow, and the map where this prop will go is lightly covered in snow. That train image looks like it went through a blizzard, and it is a bit extreme for this prop.
