I have a script to do that. It exports as tga, whatever resolution and wiresize you want.

Could somebody point me to a really good Blender unwrapping tutorial?

Hey theeth, help me out man! I work with alot of big image files and your script exported my small 600x600 image stuff chairs, tables, some characters, etc. But it would not export a 2000x2000 uv tga of just one city block that weighed in at 1800 polys or so. What am I doing wrong?

I don't think there is any UNWRAPPING tutorial...
Just some tips... like trying not to unfold the whole object at once... better split it into parts...
I mean, you select some faces in face select mode, hit "Ukey" and unwrap the way you want.. then you move on to the other faces... All the art of UVmapping is, IMHO, in the way you'll split your object.
Well I hope this helps...
There is however this really good UVMAPPING tutorial (it's maybe what you wanted after all :) ) :
hope you find this one useful
