I have just created the Character Hitting with Hammer Poses Only. Please give your critique on my poses. such as does the pose have weight, balance etc.
Here is the link.
A frame by frame advice on poses would be a great help.

I'm a little curious: when you say 'poses only,' do you mean you're not concerned with timing at this point?
I think your poses look pretty good; the only thing I'm noticing is that the character's right foot (on our left) scoots slightly on frames 7 and 10, and I think it should stay planted under the weight of the heavy hammer. You might also want to add one more pose at the end with the knees bent a little more, making the torso come down a little as a follow-through for the swing.
As for timing, the anticipation seems way too short, but that's not a concern if you're focusing completely on poses for now.

I'd have both his arms fully extended when he strikes the nail and a futher pose as the characters wieght follows through. Also I wouldn't have the hands totally fixed in place to the handle, I'd have them as they are at the start, and as he brings the hammer down the hand nearer the hammers head would slide back to the other hand. Then after the extra follow through pose I'd have the hands seperate again as he picks the weight of the hammer up for another swing.
Also you could have the character swing the hammer out round to the side then over his head rather than just straight up and down.

Thank you very much for your reply. After very good advice from friends like you, I have done so many changes to this animation.
1st thing I did is I changed the rig.
Also I have changed the poses a lot.
So could I ask my friends to quickly review the poses only?

One thing I would ask my friends that if you have a suggestion for this poses, you can draw your recommended poses in windows paint or Photoshop, flipbook or whatever program you have, that can draw on jpegs and Save it as Jpegs and if you can upload it on www.zshare.net (http://www.zshare.net/) and post it here it will be a great help for me and for newbie on poses.
You can also draw a pose, that you think that it will be suited best in paint just stick figure and I will get the rough idea that what poses that needs to be changed and what poses needs to be added.

Thank you very much Kyle for your critique. I had seen your work. It is very good. You have given me very good advice on poses. I have quickly changed pose 7, where he hit the nail. For pose 4 I have already shown weight into the animation so I kept pose 4 as it is.
I have also changed pose 5 where he is anticipating back with hammer. Could you be please more clear on pose 1. I didn’t understand it.

I have just completed the 2nd phase of my hammer animation.
After doing my key poses, I have done the following things.
1st I have created key poses with frame 1 and pose 1 on them, no timing set at the moment.
2nd I have created breakdowns between those keyposes on the timeline. In breakdowns I have put favoring, overlaps, anticipation, Arcs, ease in, ease out etc.
3rd After doing my keyposes and breakdowns, I batch render all my poses and took them into a software called monkeyjam & set the timing there.
4th After setting my timing in the monkeyjam. I went back to maya and as accordingly monkeyjam I set those pose in maya onto the timeline. E.g. if one pose is on frame 10 in monkeyjam then I put that pose in maya at frame 10. 2nd pose is on frame 15 I put 2nd pose to frame 15 in maya.
The tangents in the graph editor are like these.
Poses – in – flat
Breakdowns – in – Linear
Polishing – in – Spline
Out – Spline
No weighted tangency from starting to end. Because I can finish clean up quickly without weighted tangency.
At present the function curves are liner, so you won’t get any smooth movement in this animation.

Please advice me on poses, timing, overlaps, anticipation, settle, overall timing or whole animation or anything that you might think will be suitable for this animation.
One thing I noticed is that a lot of persons are watching this thread but there is very little reply. Why? If you are a guest please sign up & give critique. It is free. After a lot of hard work, I have completed this hammer animation. The clean up was easy I finished my clean up in just 2 hours flat, the reason was I put all curves in spline. Please give your critique as much as you can. Please advice me on timing, weight etc. If you could give critique on particular frame to frame that would be a great help.
