View Full Version : Old England Matte Painting, Jasso (3D)

04 April 2003, 07:19 PM (

this is a rework of and old still I had , but whit more detail in textures and composition , this matte painting is done in 3ds max for must of the buildings, rendered whit brazil and for the composite I used photoshop and after effects for some effects and color correction in general

blimey
this looks amazing  only thing that bothers me just slightly is the flare on the window, the glow looks a little too big, and if the windows are dirty I'm not sure the highlight would be so large, ( i'm assuming they are dirty because of the state of windows on the houses next door )

Awesome! I like those scenes best  .

04 April 2003, 11:44 AM
nice, the only thing bothering me is the smoke from the chimneys. it looks like it's in high wind, which doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the scene.

other than that it looks great.

Hmm you seem to be having bandwith probs, and I'm sure being plugged won't help ;) So I've placed your image on our servers for the time being. Excellent stuff

impression IMHO. but its great work

Great architectural vis piece. I wonder if you might explain some of your techniques. How much of the buildings are polys and how much is texture. Are the windows modeled? Are the textures image maps or procedural? I would like to learn more about architectural vis but there aren't many good resources on high end techniques.

Also, your web site is very cool.

thanks you guys for your comments and I think I really have to change the smoke on the chimneys you are right about that's showing a lot of wind ,
to give you guys an idea about what is 3d and what is 2d painting textures, the buildings in all the scene are 3d modeled in 3ds max and then I apply them simple textures to them as bricks and common walls then in photoshop I painted lots of details to those simple textures adding more textures and playing whit the transfer modes to get different result , the volumetric light is done in after effects whit trapcode's shine plug in
I have close to 110 layers in photoshop for all the details and 3d stuff the original resolution to it is 2500x1406

Incredible talent, it's obvious tons of work went into this piece. You did mention the smoke yourself so I wouldn't go there. But otherwise it's a stellar composition. BTW is that a lil man in the background? if so is he real? :D

You have received the CGtalk choice award .Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Inspiring work.

upon receiving this award, it guarantees you a spot in the cgtalk gallery hall of fame ( - which you are now placed

dopeness. But i think the bricks on some of the buildings are too pronounced. If there's wear and tear i think some should be faded and less visible, especially as the 'camera' gets further away. One of the best pieces i've seen on here though

 hey !! thanks lildragon for the award I really apreciatte it I'll keep posting more of my matte painitngs once I do some more changes to make them better looking :bounce:
the bricks are to pronunced because they are not really that far I tried to do it as photoreal as I could always based in photo references it's very hard to get a matte painting go photoreal totally from scratch but it's a try , thanks for your comments:wavey:

just breathtaking....

Well I really like the dirtry grimey feal of the whole scene, it adds to the sence of period, as well as to the realistic detail. I think that what is really throwing the whole pic off is the sunlight streaming through the area on the left, the sky isn't blue or bright enought to support that kinda light. I know it took a shitload of time to add and get right, but considering the still asthetically, I really think that it would be better off without it, or at least toned down considerablty
