View Full Version : HMC 11: Frankenstein's Monster

Well, glad to see there are a handful of entries so far, but really, where is everybody! Throwing my hat in the ring this time around. Going to be basing my model on some of my own concept art, though. Had my heart set on a particular design for Frankenstein's Monster, and as there isn't any concept art for him up yet, I'll fill in for myself!
I want to rethink the design of Frankenstein, throwing out the goofy flat topped head and clunky boots for something more golem-ish and industrial. I imagine him as being flesh and machine, thrown together at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. I want him to be imperfect, something unnatural that never should have been in the first place. If I feel really daring, I'll push the feeling that he's falling apart at the seams (literally). Hopefully the contrast between skin and rusting iron will turn out edgy and cool.
I'm finishing up the artwork and will hopefully have it up here by the end of the evening. Then, it's off to work!

Alright, here's what I've got! I'm actually pretty happy with the concept as a whole. Been working through it for the past few days. He's got a furnace where his heart should be, and one entire shoulder is now mechanical. I've got the shoulder fairly well planed out, and in the end it should actually be pretty easy to rig up. I'm going to make the left (metal) leg a little too long, so that he limps along. The idea is, he really shouldn't even exist, and the fact that none of his parts really work together should reflect that. Depending on how things go, I will try and push the rotting/falling apart idea even more than is apparent here.
Well, let me know what you all think! Hopefully will get started on base meshes soon. I'll be pretty busy tomorrow, so may not be till Wednesday, unfortunately.

The steampunk Frankenstein monster is always a good way to go! I like the idea but why does he have a huge chunk of metal on the one foot? Otherwise great idea!!

Lol. You're not actually the first person to comment on the foot. I think I had World of Warcraft inspirations on my brain (thanks Roberto!) and so was thinking in terms of chunky forearms and calves. I'm not particularly attached to the design, so if you guys have any suggestions I'd really love to hear them. And any other comments or criticism, for that matter.
I should have some WIP shots of the torso soon. School's been keeping me pretty busy, so I only hope I find more time than I've had so far. Thanks for all the comments!

Alright, after quite a bit of nasty engineering homework, I finally have a WIP shot to post. Pretty happy so far. Mostly worrying about edge flow for animation at this point. If I have to tweek proportions later, that's fine. Trying to spend a lot of time getting the mesh set up right now, rather than having to redo everything later.
I'm about to start modelling the legs next. I don't do humanoid models all that often, and was hoping you guys could offer your opinions on whether I should model Franky's pants in polygons, or use a cloth simulation. Last time I used a cloth simulator didn't end well, but I'm not sure how I'd make polygon cloth animate that well using traditional methods. Anyway, let me know what you guys think, and criticisms are welcome!

So, it's been awhile, but here's a quick update. School has been keeping me pretty busy, so it's not much, especially compared to some of the other awesome work for this HMC. I like most of the head, but I'm not too sure on the connection to the neck and shoulders. Gonna move on to legs and hands next, though. C&C welcome!

Hey all, sorry it's been awhile, school's really been catching up with me. I really hope I'll have the time to finish. Base mesh is pretty much done. Just some smaller pieces of geometry to finish/create, but I think I'm going to start moving into ZBrush. Any last crits before I do would be much appreciated!

And I'm in ZBrush! Had to add a quick pair of ears, but then it's off to sculpting. Don't like the stomach so far. I'm trying to find a balance between paunch and muscle. Otherwise, having fun. Just trying to refine the definition of form so far. Please let me know if you guys have any C&C.

Well, the deadline is coming up fast, and school just won't give me a break. I don't expect to finish by the end of friday (it won't even be midafternoon here), especially since I really wan't to do my best and not just rush it for the deadline. Should have some good time to dedicate to the project this weekend, and the ZBrush sculpting is coming along quickly now that I'm into it.
Here's a quick update. Sculpting in the seams of dear frankenstein's monster, and I'm happy so far. Will hopefully have more very soon. Any comments would be so much appreciated, but I know how busy you all probably are!

More sculpting. Took some tries to get the staples to look right on his forehead. No to go and do the same thing everywhere else! Trying to move towards a more deformed, mismatched look. Slowly but surely! Let me know what you think.

Imported the other geometry as subtools. Some of it is final geometry, some of it is stand in. I don't even think I'm going to end up sculpting any of the gears and such in his shoulder. His big metal boot still needs work in Maya, and then I'll re-import it for a final texturing in ZB. Hope you like!

it's getting there, looking great! I really wouldn't go for textures at this point, if you wanna make it on time. I would focus on packing it up!!

A couple of things came up as my weekend drew to a close, and as one might guess, I won't be making the deadline (either of them!). I really want to finish this project completely, and not just do a rush job here. I'll post him when he's done, and hopefully be joining the corresponding rigging contest.
@DDS, thanks a lot for the comment. It's really nice to hear feedback, as I'm sure you know, especially in those last fevered moments.
Hopefully, in future competitions, I'll have more time to be involved not only in my own entry, but in discussing everyone elses. There really are some great artists here, and I hope to even compare to them sometime soon.
