View Full Version : Environment demo reel
10 October 2007, 04:01 AM
There doesn't seem to be a 'finished work' thread for game art so I'll put this in here...
I just graduated from Think Tank (www.tttc.ca (http://www.tttc.ca/)) in Vancouver, Canada and here are a few shots of the environments I've completed for my demo reel.
The cave environment was completed first and I went as opposite as I could for the second piece to show some diversity. I designed the cave with the idea that it could be some kind of player/guild housing type environment for the next generation of MMOs. The sci-fi room was based on an original concept by Feng Zhu (www.fengzhudesign.com (http://www.fengzhudesign.com/)) with some of my own touches inspired by classic sci-fi.
I'm currently looking for work as a game environment artist.
Here is a link to the FULL MOVIE CLIP (http://www.interactionman.com/clips/demoreel_full.mov) (46mb)
Below are smaller seperate files with no sound for your downloading pleasure ;)

Thanks for looking!

looks great Really polished overall.
a few crits is like the water it has no slight waves on the edges. The snow and ice could have looked more icy right now it looks like big snow balls hanging. The fire is so slow moving. a bit of fog inside the cave could have made it have more depth. Could use slightly more contrasting colors like blues and such in the cave.
I think it looks great clean polished. Would have been nice to have more effects going on in the middle hologram.
overall very solid work.
Is this the demo reel though becuase even though these are great would be nice to see them in one full demo reel neatly cut with your name and such. It needs a better presentation and even have sound effects for fire burning save hollow sounds etc things a level designer and even a envionment designer might do sometimes in a studio situation.

really nice looking enviroments, good contrast between the two themes you chose.
i like the the tree with the snow blowing in from the outside and the from the ceiling hanging lights in particular, really nice textures and details everywhere. overall a great mood to both of your scenes.
congratz to your reel... good luck for you job hunt.

heeyy great work man- I really like the way you planned your enviroment reel with different themes - one more thing- I just saw the Cave quicktime, nice evironment contrast from warm to cold - excellent work- is that running on Unreal Engine?

Thanks for the comments guys.
RO - I put seperate clips on my site so they would be smaller/faster to download and watch and also took out the audio for the same reason. I can post a larger single file too I guess with the whole thing including credits/sound etc.
Both scenes are built and rendered in XSI but could easily run in a decent modern game engine. The poly count on the cave is around 65K triangles all up, the sci-fi room is somewhere around 35K. I purposly didn't use anything that would be impossible in a game engine such as final gathering or tricky lighting/rendering techniques.

Interactionman, very well done, friend. Two great scenes and very different, great skills. I think you only need to put the scenes in the same file and put sound... and send to the developers =)
All the best in your job-hunt

Nice work! The only one thing is the textures that look flat, specialy in the scifi environnement and the rock texture of the cave. I think it's lacking specular/normal map. HUm and the second little think it's that the scifi environnement need more effetcs like pulse buttons, animated screens and the snow cave could have a better lightning like some blue ambiance. Just some final touchs. Great work.

Great work! Really like the atmosphere you've captured in the cave, and the contrast with the Sci-fi room works really well.
When do we get to see more of your stuff? Or maybe some more from other graduates from your school??

I like it.
I was wondering how many gig of ram you're using to make such an environment.

but thought i would comment on your work :)
I think the Cave shot looks great -- awesome job with the lighting. The snow/ice felt a little too plain, could have used some more detail (too better match the cave). For the sci-fi shot, the only thing that bothers me are the blue pillars -- they feel almost out of place with the rest (might be the color, might be the ligting, possibly both)
ps. Jeremy Soule's music went perfect with the Cave shot

It's a good reel... only a question for you... whene you show breakdown of the first model you put fire-light in post-prodution (with compositing) or work all in 3D model and rendering?
Thankx for your answert...
Happy new yars 2008....

Hey thanks for the comments, and its never too late to be nice!
I believe there was 2gb of ram on the machine I did the layout on, but I used a render farm at school to render the frames so I've no idea about the total ram on them.
MatteoM - the fire was done with particles which were placed in the scene along with the models but I rendered them out in a seperate pass so I could comp them im at the end.
And the good news after all the hard work at school is that I just landed myself a job at Funcom (http://www.funcom.com) working on environments for Age of Conan (http://www.ageofconan.com). Sweet! :D
