View Full Version : Animation Acting Challenge #12: Progress Thread: October 1 - October 28

The winners of the Animation Acting Challenge #11 are...
See entries here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=135&t=544102).
Animation Acting Challenge #12
There are two topics to choose from
1. Ghost (Animate something you think a ghost would do. Example: Scaring people, possessing someone.)
2. Audio Clip from Young Frankenstein
Dr. Frankenstein: "Alive... It's alive!..... IT'S ALIVE!!"
Please Read me!
- Have fun animating!
- Use any rig and any animation software you like.
- Animate with any medium (3D, 2D, or stop-motion)
- You're open (and encouraged) to post your progress here if you'd like any comments and critiques.
- No time/frame restriction on the animation. Just remember that the more complex it is the longer it will take to finish. Make it by the due date!
- You can do both topics if you have the time. Either separately or as one animation if possible.
- You may add time before and after the audio clip, but please do not change the timing of the audio.
- A separate final submission thread will be created. Post your final animation there. I'll make the thread a few days before the deadline.
- Textures and lighting are optional. Playblasts are acceptable. Just make the acting clear and easy to see.
- Use any resolution and aspect ratio... but keep the file size manageable. As for codecs, preferably one that's common like quicktime or windows media. My recommendation would be Quicktime.
- When posting for final entry please state which topic you are animating.
- Adding music is optional, just don't make it distracting.
We'll do this for about a month (October 1st - October 28th). Then we'll vote (October 29th - October 31st). We'll vote for the best animations AND suggest topics for the next challenge in that time.
Feel free to ask questions about the challenge. We're still looking to improve how the challenge is conducted, we're open to suggestions.
-Don't know where to upload your final animation or WIP? I recommend using www.vimeo.com. Free to register. You get to watch a streaming flash video and if you're registered, users can also download the original video source.
-The audio can also be set to mono instead of stereo, that may help keep the file size down.
-Please consider people from other countries that have certain websites filtered out. If you have webspace it would be nice to upload there to along with any streaming flash websites, at least for your final animation. I don't want anyone to miss out on the work you've done.
I'm working with some other forum leaders from the other forums to get some collaborating work. So far there's some Halloween concept art already and looking into getting them out as rigged models for us to animate with. I don't know the time frame for that, but I may start another challenge later this month or as a whole new challenge for #13. So keep an eye out for that and check out this thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=544040) for a little information about how this may turn out.

I registered to cgtalk a long time before, but never actually used the forum...And now I think its time to start :D (Iīm currently on an animation school, so know iīm tempted to participate here) I think this is a great topic, and lets see what i can do with it..
So yeah, congrats to the winners ^^

Yo Yo Yo, I'm ready to GO! Lets do this Doggie Dog
He he, that means I'm excited there holms .

Congratulations to the winners! I had fun in the competition and I learned quite a bit from it as well. More motion! Anyway, here is a rough blocking animation for the line. For critiques I'm looking more for timing issues, the details are not to be sweated at this point which includes any popping joints as the brown rig is a pain in the ass to work with. However I believe a couple of times it seems the legs on either character are moving too fast or something.
Oh the first character, the one coming down the steps is supposed to be yawning, I hope that is conveyed, if not I can change by making it slower or if someone else could recommend something would be great. I plan on giving that character more motion just wanted to block out the path and actions of the other character to get a better feel of the flow.

my test (http://www.electronicfiles.net/files/8315/alive.mov) :)
It's at 50%, c&c are welcome :applause:
10-10-2007, 03:42 AM
Congrats to the winners, haricool you've done well .
anyway i don't know if i will participate in this one, but i'll try.
GuyInRubberSuit i think you should make your poses more meaningful , try to not hide the face of the brown one you need to show his face when he is yelling. and i think you should take away the wall so we can see the other character coming down. an imortant thing is the meaning of your scene, because the words here don't explain what is going on and why this person is yelling ?. so you have to make a scene that explain waht's going on. anyway that's just my opinion :).
@lbert very nice timing and posing there, i can't wait to see the completed animation.
10-10-2007, 02:36 PM
great anim @lbert ! expressions are great !
Just one thing... not sure about the last pose ... looks like he s sleeping or something...
rest is great ... how long did it take you to do it ?
I feel my animation test is far from being a winner against that one  ... I ll send it later today.
10-10-2007, 05:42 PM
here is my first try on that challenge. it s still quite rough though it took me nearly a day to complete...
advices very welcome.
10-11-2007, 11:06 AM
Midol: I did it in 12 h, I want to change the last pose and other things but I need more time...
10-14-2007, 08:00 PM
Hey MIDOL, your test is looking good! I would loosen up the shoulders and neck just a little when the character is stepping backwards. Some slight head bob and overlap would help there, I think. Also, more anticipation before that epic last pose would help the impact.
10-16-2007, 07:00 AM
Here is my progrgess sofar...the last alive is still comming...hehe.
I dunno, the maya avi. render made some funny artifacts..dont know why..so at the start its a bit odd... CC welcome
10-17-2007, 04:39 PM
This is my first time in contest, the scene is very poor and Iīm try better the animation.
10-20-2007, 02:09 PM
ArvidSchneider: I think...your animation needs more static poses because now I can see the key poses.
joejr: The plant is hiding the character
10-20-2007, 07:42 PM
Hey @lbert- it's looking really good. Nice overlap and the intensity matches the dialogue. I am curious about why the guy is saying "it's alive", because all the viewer can see is these round bumps in the foreground. Are those computer screens? Baby heads? :) It would be nice to understand what he is freakin' out about.
Joejr- Killer concept! If you really want to keep that dramatic low camera, track it over just a bit to the right so the plant is still in the foreground, and the main action of the character will be more visible. This will give it nice depth of field and still get the point across. Have you completed the lip sync?
and Arvid- I love how creepy it is!I think you may want to hold off on the full rendering until you are nearing completion. Render out a few stills to get lighting and renderstats taken care of, but just do playblasts to keep the output speedy. Also, the camera angle you have chosen takes away from the 'horror' of the scene. Having a scary character low-lit makes him creepy, but having a high long shot camera angle makes him seem small, helpless, and less important. If you have the time, go for the low angle camera! It will be way creepier!
Looking good everyone!

10-22-2007, 03:26 AM
@lbert.... pure genius. i love it.
10-22-2007, 02:02 PM

10-23-2007, 12:17 PM
Hi everyone, This is such a good soundfile I just had to have a go!
Still a bit of tweaking to go but here's the story so far.
10-23-2007, 03:23 PM
hi all....ive never used the forums on CG Society before...let alone know about the mini animation challenges..
well heres my WIP from today. be kind :D
10-23-2007, 09:19 PM
Well, Im finally feeling comfortable with my animation, so I'll have a go.
Any critiques would of course be fantastic
I went with the no-audio category, here's the clip:(under 1 meg)
There's a tiny bit of cleanup left, but Im pretty happy with it. Im planning on finishing it up with a freeze on the last frame(where it ends now, above the rock), and some text saying :
"Fact: It's tough to 'boo' a rock."
Or something silly(and slightly lame) like that.
Not completely 'ghosty' at the moment, but Ill work on that
Anyway, thanks, good luck everybody!
10-24-2007, 12:16 AM
wicked man. excellent weight on the walk...............i wanted to see the crash :(
theres not much wrong with this..flawless.although maybe more anticipation for the jump.
good work :applause:

10-26-2007, 03:13 AM
Probably this is my last animation preview before final render.
I apreciate the suggestions and comments.
I hope you like it!
10-26-2007, 03:23 AM
wow!!! very good ideas in this mini challenge!
nice job every one!
this is my new animation preview. At the moment curves are still linear...I'm going to smooth curves and clean up the animation this evening before the final render :)
I'm still studying (during the evenig :) ) so If somebody have any comment or suggestions are appreciated.
good luck to all :)
The story behind this is that dr Frankenstein must have done some simpler tests before he created his fantastic "monster" and this is one of them...
It's almost done, but I like to hear what you think.
@lbert, I really liked yours, but I too had some trouble understanding what they were doing at first. After have watched it about three times I got it. It's funny but maybe you could put in a quick shot seeing the characters from behind or something to clarify what they are doing.
10-26-2007, 07:05 PM
i wonder where are the animation gurus. they haven't commented yet :( .
oh well, i guess they are really busy... they're the gurus after all :P
10-26-2007, 08:34 PM
This is my final render! uff...
I would like the animation idea was a comedy: "The last plant in earth on the future distant, into the bio-research laborary and the cientist gets success when first plant birth after years and years", something like that... : )
10-27-2007, 05:49 PM
Finished Animation Thread is UP!
I have been rather busy. You know that feeling that everything seem to be moving faster than you? Yeah, like that :argh:
