View Full Version : GG demo reel FX & Lighting

09 September 2007, 01:51 PM
I have just completed my demoreel, a compilation of work I have done during my Master degree at ATI université paris 8. All done with maya, real flow, and after effect for compositing. 2 minutes of work plus 1 minut of breakdown.
Hope you like it. Crits and comments welcome.

EDIT : I have upload my reel on mirrors, please used them :) ( (

Wow! Simply WOW!

10 October 2007, 04:28 AM
SPECTACULAR, BREATHTAKING. I felt like I was watching some great space epic.
The music score really enhanced the great visuals, too. Loved it.

10 October 2007, 04:50 AM
i saw it...................................................................................................

and then i had nothing to say...

the droplet shot... what lighting man... wo

inspiring :)

great work

10 October 2007, 04:55 AM
Yes indeed, fun demo - I don't watch many of these twice. It definitely has the feeling of a larger story with all these small sub-plots. I really dig the ship crashing through the atmosphere - that's almost spooky to watch. All the clouds, smoke and debris are great.....
Good skills. Gus...

10 October 2007, 05:08 AM
Great work and good taste!

10 October 2007, 05:31 AM
incredibly tasteful work. every single shot has some epic quality to it. great compositing also. i love the bokeh effects, dof, flares and glows. 5 stars from me.

10 October 2007, 10:00 AM

Superbe !!!

Le style visuel et l'ambiance sont vraiment top

chapeau bas

10 October 2007, 11:06 AM
seems like your server's being hit by a lot of traffic right now. i was downloading the reel at work at about 300kb/s but now at home i'm having just 2kb/s.

10 October 2007, 11:58 AM
Hehe, les cinq etoiles, c etait sur !
Encore une fois excellent boulot !

Keep it up !

10 October 2007, 12:00 PM
gr8 demoreel almost like like your water perfect 5*:buttrock:

10 October 2007, 12:01 PM
Really great ! bravo!

10 October 2007, 12:56 PM
GG mathieu,

What a power full showreel...
the DOF is so great.
keep the pressure !!!

10 October 2007, 01:06 PM
simply loved the mood of it..!great work

10 October 2007, 01:18 PM
Serious stuff.

I have only 1 point i'd like to criticise.. at 0'40+ there's a water closeup shot.. to me it looks like if only the bumpmap was moving and the displacement stood still. I had to look twice at it but I still have that impression.

10 October 2007, 01:51 PM
Thanks to all for comments, stars and frontpage !!! I am so happy :bounce:

Rebolt : As you can see in the breakdown I used several passes of santard maya particules, to get trails and traces. I also used Trapcode particular (a greaaaaat AE plugin) to get flicking stars, it's realy easy to have color random particules and nice motion with it.

Scobb: Thx :)

Eisman : Yep the bump map moves faster than the displace, I thought it was not so obvious, so I dont fixed it, but you are right :) .

10 October 2007, 02:15 PM
awesome job.. love color correction lot. and compositing job was tremendous

10 October 2007, 02:44 PM
Beautiful. I was really moved by this. Got a little misty... I've got to know some of those techniques, this work is mindblowing.

Can you talk about your color correction and lighting process?

10 October 2007, 03:04 PM
I must say this is one of the best reels ive seen, extremely inspiring.

10 October 2007, 03:13 PM
Excellent reel! Very well done. The way the imagery worked with the music reminded me a lot of a movie called Baraka. Both the demo section and the breakdown worked really well together, and got the point across very effectively.

Good job!

10 October 2007, 03:51 PM
Feels like I just watched a Film and A good one!

The music was beautful as was your reel.

Well done

10 October 2007, 04:45 PM
So beautiful! I like it a lot, and the music really fits in.

10 October 2007, 04:48 PM
WTF!!! your work its wonderful, beautiful, so perfect, i wanna cry now, really, i love your lightning work, please, tell us wich software you used, and about post process DOF, wich plugin allow you to make bokeh effects? thanks in advanced, sorry my poor english.

Really awesome reel...

10 October 2007, 05:44 PM
Simply incredible. It was like watching a young Kubrick getting started visually. You actually want to work for someone? Go for it but make a film on the side....seriously.

10 October 2007, 07:44 PM
Dude i would love to watch the rest looks really great!! but file size is to big :) can you make it smaller ?

looks great though from what i can see

10 October 2007, 08:21 PM
Awesome work, and professional... congrads..

10 October 2007, 08:44 PM
Really great work 5*

i like the water drops simulation :)

10 October 2007, 09:21 PM
Did you generate all that smoke&clouds and similar from Maya? I didnt know Maya Fluid FX is so powerfull...

And your reel is an awesome visual expirience!

10 October 2007, 09:43 PM
Congratulations on your consistently excellent reel.

I have a couple of questions about the fluid effects, I assume the water splash (like in the example pic) was done in realflow, did you simulate it with a really high fps, or did you do it in realtime with a lot of drag? Also, did you get that flow straight from an emitter with some noise, or did you splash it out of a container? Sorry for such specific questions, but I'm doing a realflow project that has some similarities and I really like the look of the sim you got.

Send me a private message if you don't want to get too much RF stuff in this thread.

10 October 2007, 09:58 PM
Thanks to all for comments, stars and frontpage !!! I am so happy :bounce:

Mathieu You deserve it.
Great reel
I do Hope to see you again in the FXwars forum. (hint hint)

10 October 2007, 12:32 AM
very nice --------------------- 3 point

10 October 2007, 12:48 AM

Inspirational! Nothing I say will even measure up to your amazing work. /bow

10 October 2007, 01:53 AM
hi mathieu,

i'd really like to know more about the compositing. what package/plug-ins did you use for those wonderful dof/bokeh/atmospheric effects. could you give us a breakdown?

10 October 2007, 07:18 AM
That's rather sweet :) Great work, I enjoyed it alot.

10 October 2007, 07:35 AM
I just have to say one thing: Wow! That was one of the most stunning reels I have ever seen, like Lman said: 'like watching a movie'. Good job man.

But I have one question, did you create those clouds and those puffy smoke/dust trails of the ship with the Maya Fluids?

10 October 2007, 08:29 AM
Goosebumps everytime.. Stunning reel, love it.

10 October 2007, 11:21 AM
Great work Mathieu! Looking forward to a "making of.." somewhere. Absolutely stunning :applause:

10 October 2007, 11:21 AM
Hi Math, remember me ?

Really nice reel, I already know you were good, but your job is just stunning. The spaceship shots are incredible.
Keep the good work, and let us know what you gonna do next

10 October 2007, 12:38 PM
Thanks again for comments, I will try to answer everybody :)

Concerning lighting and shading it was quite easy because a lot of elements are metalic surfaces and for that one you just need a good HDR environement. Some spotlights to get shadows and enhance edges brightness (rim lights). The cathedral shots were more difficult to light, I calculated a FG solution at different time steps to gather all areas covered by the camera. I have rendered an HDR panoramic of my cg set to get correct reflections on chromed elements. For each shot I usualy render a main pass (reflection, shadows, and specular), an occlusion pass, a zpass, dirt pass (to alterate some areas of image) and sometimes I used soft and hard specular pass in false color, to adjust each specular individualy in comp.
For the spacecraft I have used custom passes, color, diffuse, shadows, specular,AOV, occlusion, certains of these passes are in false colors ( one light per channel : 1light in R, 1 light in V,...)

For color correction. I always try to have cg renders with good exposure, that means, no black or white spots in the image. After it's easy to dark or bright those areas in compositing. To get the final look, I just used curves, it 's very interesting to play with all channels to get what you visualy need. I looked for old pellicules texture with a washy and grainy look. It's a very subtel process, and if you are working in 16 bits it can be more subtel and interesting (for my demo I was not able to deal with 16 bits pictures). I also was focusing on cameras artefacts, that means DOF, dust particles, scratches and stains on lens, lens flare, highlights bloom...

To have a bohek DOF I used Lenscare, a plug for AE. It's very good plug with hilights and iris control. You can apply DOF with a depth map, and get a focus zone with a cursor. But it has some issues with aliasing ( if you want a very pronounced dof with geometries overlapping it 's easiest to render your elements in layers according to their position in camera space (Z))

Concerning RF, all the simulation here are made with fields (noise or wind are good ones :) ) and circle emitter, no geometry was used to sclupt the fluid. For the slow motion shot you can see in the breakdowns, it's little tricky, there is no simulation, I just import a single mesh (1million poly) that I keyframe, just a slight rotation and translation... You can also experiment with non linear deformers to had some turbulences and deformations on the mesh, but I never tested it with a 1million polys geometry. I never used RF before my demo works, I have learned a lot with the last gnomon dvd, RF sculpting fluid and some digital tutors for very basics lessons.

All the fluids are Maya Fluids, I used differents techniques depending of the smoke passes I needed. It 's important to check the visor examples, there is a lot of good stuff in it. I used 3d fluid containers with dynamic simulation that I parent to the spacecraft. I also used particules with 3d fluid textures. With this solution you combine the nice shading of fluid with the flexibility of particules. Look for Overburn plugin by Peter Shipkov.
But as you can in the breakdowns, smoke on the impact was not a one pass render. Instead it needs a lot of differents pass : dust particules, particular trapcode, fluid fx, stockshots, instanced geometries,...
I will post some MA scenes of fluids.

Vinz : Salut vincent, je me souviens bien en effet, eheh, stagiares sparxiens. Je suis content que ca te plaise. Ca se passe bien ŕ Londres ?

10 October 2007, 09:15 PM
Excuse my useless comment, but I must show my respect
Masterpiece!! :applause:

10 October 2007, 09:26 PM
hand down that was cool man i thought for sure the water was real flow. but it was not.
I love the break downs of the shots.....

10 October 2007, 10:21 PM
Excellent Reel Man, I love the Music. Great Compositing

10 October 2007, 10:47 PM

10 October 2007, 12:11 AM
Really great work, wow.

10 October 2007, 03:21 AM

Hy Mathieu . Your Demo just Rocks !

If you are searching for a job , my boss is searching a particle gurus ! the companie is in paris in the 9 district ! if you are interested maybe you can call them ...

10 October 2007, 11:18 AM
very nice reel. love the indent too.:)

10 October 2007, 01:23 PM
Wow, Mathieu! I've been watching this over and over again. It's so beautiful and organic.

Two questions if you don't mind answering:

1. Where can I see more than just "extraits" of your glorious work?

2. What lens flare/glow plugins do you recommend for AE?

10 October 2007, 02:33 PM
that was pretty inspirational...

thx for the breakdown...

5* rock on!!

10 October 2007, 10:01 PM
started looking at your reel and was blown away.....then i checked the size of the showreel and was sad.....I WANA SEE THE REST :(

Can you PLEASE make a smalled version of your showreel??

10 October 2007, 01:10 AM
Mate, that was brilliant.. I loved the fire, cloud, and explosion effects. Great work!!!

10 October 2007, 01:35 AM
not only technically well done but the work itself was quite interesting and not the norm, and the presentation was pure class. even a bit TOO classy for my taste :) but great stuff, im sure you will be onto a good future.

10 October 2007, 02:06 AM
I'd love to have a reel as good as that, too. You shouldn't have any problems getting VFX work, that's for sure.

10 October 2007, 07:58 PM
Top notch reel, really enjoyed watching it. I think the term "eye candy" fits quite nicely here :)

10 October 2007, 09:11 PM
Hi mathieu,
Impressive work! ready to work for feature film company?
See u soon, i 'll contact you by email.

10 October 2007, 04:35 PM
Hey Mathieu,
Not bad, Not bad at all. I really enjoyed your reel, I felt that the most important thing youve achieved in your reel was that it was very proffessional, and consistant. Alot of reals show flashes of greatness, but are week in other areas. For the most part you had good balance. Keep up the good work, and keep improving.

10 October 2007, 06:34 PM

10 October 2007, 03:03 PM
Hard to say something more... Incredible work done here, the scene with sea and purple clouds is just magical.

10 October 2007, 06:53 PM
Mathieu, I like very much your demo, specially the camera, it´s awesome!!! I like very much your point of view...

Send you the best!!!

10 October 2007, 05:41 PM
It's just.. wow. I'm speechless.
Really awesome job on that reel :D

[EDIT: lol, I missed the credits ...]

11 November 2007, 01:12 PM
I work at Gnomon as a labtech. At work we all gathered around the monitor and watched your work and were just stunned. I keep grabbing students and making them watch your reel. Very very inspiring stuff.:)

11 November 2007, 03:03 PM
Really great reel... :) And fits the music perfectly... :)

I'd like to ask about the water material, could you please write a short summary of how was it done? Or a mini-tutorial, or just what to do as a base for experimentation to achieve such water mat? I mean the 'ocean' water (with the sun and the sky) and the watery 'blob' that is flowing right after the second 'ocean' scene? Or just any clues please? :)

Thanks a lot :)
