For the transparency with almost every shaders
double clic on your shaders (the ball on the hypershape windows ) that will open on the right a window with many setting the second one after color is often Transparency just slide from black to white...

(with mental ray and raytracing ON ) (render setting windows) be sure reflexions and refraction are high enough for transparency 4 faces for your geometry soo 4, 5 faces put a 5

hope that help

An objects transparency is based upon the material assigned to that object. So you are doing it correctly just thinking about it wrong. :) That said, if you want to view the objects as transparent in the viewport but not in the render then press "5" to view objects shaded. Then click on the "Shading" button of the current viewport and selet X-ray. This will allow you to see through your objects without affecting the material's transparency setting.

Hope this helps.
