View Full Version : Mental ray 3.6 test

Its a glass/liquid test basically,
how are rays reacting in mixed media and so on

I had some problems with samples in a glass to liquor
area at first, all scene was fine but bottle was grainy
like hell and nothing was helping, ridicoulus sampling
values, high photon, high fg helped a little but it was not it.
Then I got it, on my area light (Portal one thats it) I
was pushing high samples to even 256 to no avail but
low sample and high sample limit was left alone (at 1),
that was the mistake, at 8 and 16 respectively glass
suddenly cleaned.

all mia materials, glass setup exactly like in manuals

The defaults for the maya lights easily leads to trouble.... for example the fact that even after one bounce, the shadows turn off by default in maya (i.e. you see no shadows in a reflection!).

So please care for those shadow settings, since the defaults are very "1980" ;)

Well, here is another one.
It seems that new mental ray doesnt like
mix8layer shader. First it produces heavy glow
out of nothing, so I had to remove post effects from
render globals and another thing is that adds some
gi or fg strength specially visible on glass - it gets
unnaturally whiter. I tried putting photon shader and
shadow shader on mix8layer but its the same.
Some would say why dont use maya layer shader,
well I tried that too (havent been using it for several years)
and thats first time that maya 2008 crashed on me.
So what would be solution for layer shader?
