View Full Version : Nemesis the Warlock

12 December 2001, 10:51 PM
Haven't posted anything for ages, and thought I'd contribute
to the new forum.

This is something I've been playing around with, a character
from the 2000AD comic (which spawned Judge Dredd, who
for those who don't read comics may know from the poor
Stallone film).

Here's an early version and some later rendering tests.

Just wanna tell you that I love your work !

Well done !

Awesome Matt! That brings back memories.... I used to have the game, on my trusty old C64 (or was it on the Vic20?) I used to spend hours, while the bodies piled up & filled the screen... (sigh)

I'd love to see some smoke comin from that nose... ;)

12 December 2001, 11:31 PM
What is that rendered with? It'

12 December 2001, 12:26 AM
Matt, once again you've stunned me. WOW...that's all I can say. :D

in that last image, what's up with the cape? Looks a little "off" maybe it's just me

12 December 2001, 12:36 AM
exellent modeling replica, very good use of warm and cool colors, :D

one thing though, the use of multiple "intense" lens flares creates a lack of focal point in the piece

12 December 2001, 01:17 AM
good concept design I like it :D I don`t remember this guy.. only judge death " sentenceee issss deathhhhhh " :D good feeling on the pose and renders.. you rock Matt!

12 December 2001, 01:53 AM
mucho cool!. not much to say really.
looks a but heavy on polygons in the armour area though.

12 December 2001, 04:30 AM
Matt!, You kick @$$!!!! Totally in love with your work. :D

12 December 2001, 08:40 AM
cool work, nice backgrounds and textures
i like the cloth material

12 December 2001, 09:19 AM
Great stuff Mat, as always :) Only things I dislike are the pose in the first pic, it looks a little strained(?)... er... fake I guess. And the lensflare... Tone it down, pleeeease!!! It's so... Photoshop. Other than that, great stuff!

Chris: I think it was on the C64 and a few other 8 bit machines.
Smoke from the nose is definitely a lasting image of this guy,
so I'll have to work on that...

Duhreetoh: It's all rendered with the Max default scanline
renderer, which is often maligned. Colour/contrast correction
is then dealt with in Pshop.

Taoizm: Yeah, the cape defintely isn't finished here. It will be
far more dynamic, flowing with the motion when done. In
the last composition it was initially covered up by some text
so I didn't bother with it.

ambassador: I do a fair mount of color correction in Pshop to get
this style. I know what you mean about the flares. I'm usually
the last person to use them, but they seemed fitting with this

pascal blanché: Now Death would be good to model...

Martin-K-: I'm tending to build quite dense stuff these days.
As long as it's all feasible to animate I don't mind.

urgaffel: As I said earlier it's very rare for me to even look at the
lens flare button let alone use it. I guess I'll limit myself a bit more.

Here's some other bits and pieces on the 'not finished' pile:

Another character from 2000AD:

A walking carpet:

A very early shot of an alien character I made up:

and another unfinished concept of my own:

Matt you have mad skills, there's nothing to comment on besides it looks just awesome, all of you works, mighty impressive, "the walking carpet" from star wars fur looks amazing, what was used to do that?

12 December 2001, 12:02 PM
Shag:fur and Shag:hair. I've had a lot of requests for a tutorial, so I'll try and get round to it.

12 December 2001, 12:04 PM
awesome man, that shaggy look will suit my bunny well ;) how long was the render time?

12 December 2001, 12:09 PM
I will start a " push away Matt Clark from computers" group... who's with me? :D

12 December 2001, 12:12 PM
waves hand frantically in the air

You are an absolute git :)

12 December 2001, 09:21 PM
Matt - you are hands down the best advert for Max I've ever seen (if you know what I mean). Obviously this is 90% due to you skill, but I mean - jeeesus...

Two things -

1. Yes, you should definitely due a tutorial for Shag fur/hair... I've used it a fair bit, but I've never seen results with it like the ones you achieve.

2. Don't even think about doing Judge Death!! I've had that one back burning on my brain for agessssssssss... :( but then, who's gonna stop you ;) :D

Superb as always.

Damn you Matt Clarke - Damn you to hell... :P

12 December 2001, 10:27 PM
