Latest Update: Final Render: Strange Relations (

08-31-2007, 05:50 PM (

The Rainbow Lion is a very loose sketch of one of the 4 characters that share a symbiont - and very strange off course :) - relationship in my animation.
The Frameboy is already 3D - in his 2D nature - and somewhat shaded, and he would be the fourth of the 4 characters. Not completely sure whether he will be in the clip or not, yet.

The two main characters are expected to jump out of my head shortly, and then off course show themselves here.
C&C are welcome at all stages, although I realize that what I posted probably doesn't make much sense yet....
Strangeness all around!

09-01-2007, 07:39 PM
good luck friend:thumbsup: .

09-01-2007, 09:35 PM
Thank you Siavash, I'm gonna need it! :)

09-05-2007, 05:39 AM (

Concept drawing of the main character.
As I mention he will be wearing clothing all throughout the shot, so I have focused my drawing and design on the parts that will be visible during it. To begin with, he will just be looking like a human, so this sketch is really a big spoiler...oh well... ;)

09-05-2007, 09:37 PM (

Concept Sketch of the second main character.
They are all really kind of main...
Read the description on the picture for some more info :)

09-09-2007, 12:50 AM (

Finally got started on the modeling. The TV Cat will be the first one and we'll see from there how much time I have :)

I have changed since the sketch, added antennas to function as a type of whiskers instead of my planned ears, and made different ears instead. Also added a speaker...

I have quite a big scene in mind with 4 characters and a couple of strange events taking place in a moon lit destroyed city type scene. This being the head of one of the two primary characters, but I doubt that I will get to make that whole scene before the contest ends.
Maybe I'll just make a little scene with those two characters from the concept drawings, again, we'll see :)

09-09-2007, 01:35 AM (

A quick addition to the last post,
I thought this picture from the viewport was both fun and descriptive. :)

09-10-2007, 09:11 AM (

A couple of legs are missing but I have to get some sleep ;)

The proportions might still change, I'm still tweaking all over the place.
Some details of the design are saved for texturing and displacement/bump.

Can't wait to see it fall over and go into static, but I'm taking it one step at a time :)

C&C welcome!

09-11-2007, 05:22 AM (

Wireframe of the full TV cat shown in the next picture...

09-11-2007, 05:26 AM (

Done with the modeling now.
Tweaked some more after adding the hind legs, and might do a bit of tweaking later...

First of though I think it's about time to look at texturing and shading, if there are any comments before that, I sure would like to hear them :)

09-11-2007, 06:53 AM
Your TV Cat is really interesting... I'll have to keep an eye on you.

The only critique I have is that the TV head looks like it would topple the cat forward easily... but since you plan to have the cat faint a lot anyway... this might actually work to your favor. G'luck man!

09-11-2007, 09:38 AM
Haha yeah, it is good for the fainting moves I have in mind that he is fairly top-heavy ;)
He is strong enough to carry the head and jump around in his everyday moving around though...

In this last picture he does have a slightly smaller head than in the earlier pictures, which is good, but I like that it is still quite big.

Thanks for the comment! :)

09-16-2007, 04:44 AM (

This is not an actual shot from the animation or lit in any special way, heck it's still even in the "kitty Da Vinci pose" ;)
It is however coming along with the texturing and shading and then I made this quick mock up for ambiance using a 2D painting of mine as background.

It also shows the beginning of the face itself which I think is quite funny :)
I might put up some animation tests when I get around to it, quite a lot to see to these days.

The next thing I wanna do is rig it and make another shot where it has been knocked unconscious by something, landing on it's head with static on the screen...

Hope to hear what you guys think! :)

09-17-2007, 09:13 AM
very interesting character
to the face I would add some noise and maybe some horizontal lines going from top to down, like in old tv screens.
now it looks like paint, not like a screen.

09-17-2007, 10:24 AM (

Finally a picture of the cat in it's unconscious state :)

Also, it shows that clearly there has been spend some time on the rig... ;)

I had a problem creating a decent Static Noise shader in Maya, it should be easy...
I ended up creating this texture in Photoshop to be used for this picture, but that gives me some problems with animation...

Basically what I tried in Maya was to create it as 2D noise, but when it's at that high frequency there is very noticeable tiling!
Not good, then I tried putting noise on the UVs, that just made it swirly, also not good...

I don't know if I'm missing something super simple, I'm not a material expert.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

As well as any comments off course...
Thanks for tuning in :)

09-17-2007, 10:31 AM
Thanks for the comment :)

I think you are right about the face, that it still needs something to look more like a screen.
I think I will experiment with making the white lines of the face slightly transparent and adding some noise and other things, maybe those horisontal lines, to the blue background itself. It seems that adding noise and lines to the glass of the screen just isn't enough...

09-21-2007, 01:39 AM (

Chronologically this picture should have come before the last one where it was lit and posed...

I was too fixated on making that picture though... :)
So I thought I would post this now for fun. Remember to look at the previous picture to see it "in action".

I've started work on the second character, the android...
I will post some model shots soon!

09-21-2007, 03:19 AM
I'm interested to see what story you come up with. Is the cat's behaviour driven by what is on the screen, or does the screen represent its current behaviour?

It looks like you flattened the screen out a bit from your original model? I wonder if you should maybe have it with more of a curve to help the shading? Also, it looks like it could really do with some reflection.

There seems like a fair bit of work to go, so I hope you can finish - good luck.

09-21-2007, 04:18 AM

Hi Ordibble P.
Are you referring to the Static Cat picture, or which picture? In the last one, definitely, but that's just a low poly screenshot from Maya that backtracks quite a bit, so I'm a bit confused.. ;)
The screen did have reflection in the first full render test, it will be there again when there is something to reflect... as for smoothness, it is possible I will make the edges a bit smoother, in the high high version they are fairly smooth though, not done with the shading...

As for the behavior question. The screen is the cats face, so mostly it will represent the cats emotion and behavior, just like a regular face. However, it being a TV, it will sometimes be interrupted by other broadcasts and sometimes even loose connection which results in an inanimate state. The Static Cat picture showed some of this, although it hadn't fully collapsed there.

As for story, I have a very specific scene in mind that would be sort of a short preview for a whole feature length movie I want to make - we'll see how many years that will take... ;)
I've been thinking about it for years, and when this contest came up I thought it was a good time to start and make just one little scene.

The scene - not the whole movie - is in a corner of a post nuclear type city scape where the cat comes strolling and meets with the android who is hiding in the shadows. Is is at night. The Android looks pretty much human here since he is wearing a hoodie and has a human looking face (see the sketch). So we have some friendly time between the android and the cat where you also clearly see that he is an android, and a small (I assume) electro magnetic disturbance almost makes him fall getting the android a bit on his toes. Shortly after that a bigger disturbance comes into that plane of reality showing the face of the Rainbow Lion (another character) saying the words "Now it's time". His emergence sends out a strong vibration that causes the TV Cat to collapse and go into static and when he disappears, as quickly as he shows himself, he takes the android with him...
The cat wakes up again and is confused. You see him walking around, miaving...(is that what cats do, in english?).
Now the full clip would start with a neon like butterfly flying over the screen catching the focus of the android, immediately before the Cat shows up. In the end when the cat is walking around confused, you get close to his TV screen and it "changes channel" to show this butterfly landing in some rubble close to the site. When he lands though he flickers out of that reality plane and in again in the form of frameboy AKA The Polarization Man (see the very first post, and imaging that guy as a butterfly).
Another channel switch quickly shows the android who is no longer and android but some very strange something.. disintegrating, deconstructing deforming...
Another switch, you see the android, who now looks completely human, might even be human, sitting in the same spot as before but it is day time and the buildings aren't destroyed.

That might sound a bit confusing, it's the first time I've actually written this down :)

That's the scene I Want to make for Strange Behavior, but I have my doubts that I will have time....!! ;)
So instead I might do something different for the contest, something more simple and perhaps more silly but I haven't fully decided on what yet. We'll see once I get the android made how much time I have left.
Hopefully I will have time for a simplified version of the scene described above without all the planned cuts and characters and channel changes, just focusing on the cat and android and the "disturbance".

I'm suspecting that the full scene will be found in the animation gallery sometime later that the contest ends... ;)

Good luck with your entry also!

09-25-2007, 09:07 AM (

Woow, there's a lot to do and so little time!
Should have started way earlier, but hey, still 35 days.......

Been a bit off lately and now finally got this fairly big step done.. the face of the main character in his android stage.
Certainly the only stage I will have time to deal with for this Strange Behavior clip.
I am striving to do a little clip featuring this guy and the TV Cat :)
More soon, hopefully!

Only model milestone, even though there's some shading going on, just for fun...

09-25-2007, 09:35 AM
the loops aren't very clean, there should be a loop from the nose to the corner of the mouth. But if you're not going to animate the face, it's alright.

waiting for more.

09-25-2007, 09:51 AM
Thanks for the reply.
I see what you mean, I haven't modelled a face for years and years and was a bit rusty in the loops department so i fiddled for quite some time... ;)
I am planning on animating him so I might look into changing those loops.

Do you know of any good tutorials, or just refference pictures, on edge loops for faces? I've mostly been dealing with architecture and other designed things before...

09-26-2007, 11:13 PM (

Another modeling update.
The face and head also changes slightly... just slightly... the face though got retopologized...
Next up is the arm and hand and then wrapping it up with some clothing.. :)

09-28-2007, 11:10 AM (

So here is the android, finally with a full body and clothing, trying to hide his android-ness...

I'm pretty happy with him overall. I will probably make the pants a bit baggier and longer, just a bit. Also, a zipper area will probably be done in texturing as well as many other details that will be taken care of then off course.. ;)

09-29-2007, 08:44 AM (

It's not done yet, the texture, but I like how it was looking with this matcap skin material in ZBrush... :)

10-01-2007, 02:57 PM (

Experimenting with the misss fast skin shader... it's nice :)

Now I seriously need to get moving though!

10-01-2007, 05:05 PM
hey ncie project u got here man... been following this one from the beginig... i think its pretty interesting... nice modeling but if u ask me I'd say the spacular of the face is a bit too much.. also you cud try breaking up those highlights with some bumps. Also the hand seems a bit too much translucent... hope that helped... keep up the good job mate...

10-02-2007, 01:13 AM
Thanks for your comments :)
I think you are right on both. I want the skin to be fairly smooth, but not quite that smooth probably.. ;) Will probably do more with the specular map than with the bump for this guy..
As for the translucency of the hand, haven't tweaked to much there yet, in fact for both the face and hand I think I will wait with tweaking until I have the characters in a scene with some more descent lighting...

Thanks buddy, I shall keep going :)

10-02-2007, 11:18 PM (

First I was thinking I would not make the shredded pinky to save time, then I thought, no.... I want it!

So yeah, I'm extra busy, I'm moving to Denmark tomorrow....

Meaning more delay, but hey, I just animate and render as much as I can before deadline! ;)

Besides from adding that shredded pinky part I have tweaked the hand model a bit, especially the fingertips and the connection to the nails, plus gave the nails a new material, that I'm pretty happy about.
The material on the pinky itself can change quite a lot...

Also some minor tweaks here and there to give it more definition while still keeping it fairly low poly and smooth - so as to not kill myself and my poor little laptop ;)

10-03-2007, 12:23 AM
nice modeling and texture work. very realistic.
not sure if you tried this yet for your 2d noise problem...but have you tried checking the box that says "stagger"...? that could help with your tiling problem. just an idea.
good luck with your work!

10-03-2007, 03:23 AM
Thanks for your comments :)
I haven't tried that stagger box... will be sure to give it a try when I get back to the cat... :)

10-16-2007, 05:50 PM (

There's a lot of stuff you have to imagine in this clip, some "supporting characters" missing and a lot of movements are not there yet.
For example, the android doesn't move at all after the intro...and he doesn't disappear when the cat goes unconsciouss. That will come later.
Also offcourse, the android is supposed to have clothes, he will get those, I hope...!
Plus, a lot of other things, it's rough to say the least.

This is mostly to make the camera so I can make a quick set and render that out by itself. Time is of the essense here, and I sure haven't got a lot compared to how much i still need to do! Long ago I realised that I would have to make a much simpler scene, and because of rendering time restrictions, it has to be a short clip...
But hey, it's a challenge... ;)

Play Video >> (

10-18-2007, 11:16 PM (

A render and composite test of the set.
It is rendering now as I am working on the character animation...
So little time, so many corners to cut.. ;)

10-22-2007, 12:13 AM (

Here's a frame from the animation. There are some things I would like to do in the comp, both to background and foreground, but many things has to be done before that!

The next thing I post will probably be a final animation preview, I'm working on it while rendering out small parts and passes...

10-22-2007, 12:37 AM
love that shot of the tele-cat jumping down. real nice atmosphere and mood.

10-22-2007, 03:56 AM
Thanks buddy!
I'm striving for it ;) Still a few things that might give it extra atmosphere...

10-23-2007, 02:05 PM (

Software: Maya

Except for small changes that I might see, or little mistakes that you might tell me about... this is what I have time for in terms of the basic animation.
The face of the cat is coming in a later layer...haven't animated it yet!

There's still a third quite crucial character missing in the end, the so-called rainbow lion that pops in and makes the android disappear. So that's another thing that has to be imagined for now. And a big reason why I need to not spend more time at this step lol!
The intro shot also has a bonus character that I hope I have time to make and put in... we'll see!

Play Video >> (

10-26-2007, 01:09 AM (

Still missing that rainbow lion! And rendering, and cat face... and.. busy days all around I think... ;)

10-28-2007, 08:31 PM (

It might be a bit late to post this, but I thought I should post a rig of the android, though he is animated now...
It's been hard to participate that much lately with these things since I moved back to Denmark after not being here for almost 2 years...
I will have a compiled animation done very soon!

10-30-2007, 12:42 AM (

Thought I would throw this in before I post the first final animation...
As I write, it turned out it was more a baboon type character than a lion, makes a lot of sense in many ways... ;)

It is made of a lot of splines that are separated in strips, these splines are animated independently to make it swirl...

10-30-2007, 12:55 AM (

And another one of those planned bonus characters that I finally got around to.

It's animation rig is very simple. A joint in the middle followed very closely by a joint on each side that each go out to the tip of the wings.
I have controls to animate these two near_center_joints rotation at the same time, and that's basically it :)

The modelling is mostly done with splines again, also to get easy UV maps that makes sense for the way I'm shading it...

10-30-2007, 01:36 AM (

Software: Digital Fusion,Maya,Photoshop,ZBrush

With the original deadline in place, I would have tweaked this a bit more and then rushed to make a sound track. Now, instead, i will sleep and post it like this...

I did add the two extra characters that were planned for the clip, the baboon shown here, formerly known as the rainbow lion (it's just a name, and it's no lion, never really was when I think about it... ;) ).
And the butterfly in the intro.

With the extra two weeks I will probably tweak the timing of the animation in key places, everyting is so rushy because it had to be done and rendered quick!
Especially in the scene shown here in the picture. I want it to be more clear that the android disappears. Also want it to be easier noticeable that he is an android, meaning it would be nice if you saw the back of his head and the neck a bit more, before he lights up and disappears.
Also, the scene in the very beginning with the butterfly that comes into focus, I would like for it to be a bit more slowmotion like, slightly longer... and then when you zoom in on his face, hold the camera there for a second and let you see him looking after the butterfly with the reflection in his eyes, before he looks down...
Various other things, but working like this is not good for my health if you know what I mean... ;)
So I plan on not going as crazy as I've done the last two.
And off course, actually make a sound track!

So what's going on here?
Well, the android is hiding out in this apocalyptic world, on edge...
The TV cat shows up and is quite confused and feeling a bit weird. He can feel the vibrations or magnetic fields of the baboon entering from another dimension, his antennas start spinning and he almost falls...
When the baboon does show up it knocks the cat unconscious which results in his TV showing a static screen. The baboon is after the android but doesn't kill him. He teleports him out of there to another realm, one that is not in this clip...
That is as of yet an untold story...
For now, both of them leave that world again leaving the cat behind who soon wakes up and then the channel changes to the title screen.

At first I wanted the TV to change to a channel showing the butterfly landing nearby and transforming to what I've been calling the polarization man. That's basically who that character is, he is seen on my very first sketch together with the baboon, who even then looks like a baboon of sorts.. ;)
After that I would like to change to a couple of other worlds before ending the clip, but it's not really realistic doing what I have in mind with those two weeks, so just adding that one with the butterfly would tie the begining and end together as well as being nice and more clearly show that you change channel...

When I wake up in 24 hours I will post a couple of compositing breakdowns.
I've learned so insanely much by doing this challenge and a lot of it has to do with compositing which is completely new to me.

So, all comments will be greatly greatly appreciated!! :)

I already posted a more detailed description of my TV Cat Rig quite some time ago.
Since then though I learned how to make a dummy object and use that to control the rotation of the feet as well as the location of the ankle in a much simpler way.
That combined also with knowledge about creating those pole vector constraints.
Haha, simple things that I had completely missed before starting the project, and damn, did they help!

The rest is like it was on the former picture, except I added another SDK control at the root of the tail to have two points to animate that from.

11-03-2007, 01:29 PM (

Still taking a break here before diving back in and finishing the piece of...
Here is the same scene from my last animation update, except I removed the Rainbow Creature.
I'm not happy about that character, it needs to be more ethereal and I haven't really figured out how yet...

Several other things might change in that clip and all around, but I thought it was a good time to post 2 examples of how the animation is composited together. Not showing the layers themselves, but their effect.
Some more subtle than others... ;)

11-03-2007, 01:34 PM (

And a second one.
This one displaying the cat as well, that was fallen out of the other picture...

Few other differences, mostly just that the other one had many post effect layers that are not used here.

Software: Digital Fusion,Maya,Photoshop,ZBrush

I've extended two parts of the intro. More slowmo butterfly, plus the android is staring for a while after the butterfly with reflection in his eyes. A repitition of events, mighty strange.. ;)
Some things I would like to add and tweak, but I have a few other scenes that needs urgent work (and a soundtrack!), and not too much spare time these days sadly...
Any comments this time around...? :)
Any at all....
Best of luck to everybody!

i like your modifcations to the new intro. that butterfly looks really cool. the close up of the cyborg is nice, us a chance to see all that detail in your character. good work!

Time's up!

Thanks fruela! That was a close call.
I'm relatively satisfied, lots that could be improved though but I came full circle with my story, which is good. Added what I said I would in the last final render post and started making a soundtrack 4 hours ago!
It doesn't make it less strange...

Didn't have much time to create a good Final Render picture, hope this will do and that you will still watch the animation :)

Also don't have time to write much here, so check the previous post.
In short, this short animation is about strange relations betweeen creatures and characters across dimension and time and space and what have you...
Some might even be the same.

It is sort of dreamlike and detached, between realities and dreams. With the sounds I tried to go with that isolated feeling also, making the cat sound a bit like a whale. Also the sound when the light creature brakes into that reality plane and transports the android away is inspired by the sounds I experience when getting close to a lucid dreamning (astral projection) type state. Not quite, could use some more time there also..
Biggest thing I would like to have improved remains that the clip should have been a lot longer, basically meaning completely different without the huge stress factor it has right now.

One final scene I would like to have added is another channel shift on the TV to see where the light creature brings the android. It is a wonderfully colorfull place! :)

Best of luck to all and thanks for the comments I got! I shall press upload...

love that butterfly. the tv cat is pretty sweet, too......and of course your work on that cyborg face is great.

11-17-2007, 12:24 AM
Thanks again Casey!
The butterfly ended up being one of my favorite parts too, also easier to handle than the other characters.. ;)

11-17-2007, 08:10 AM
Hey Lasse, really love the atmosphere of your piece. Nice work on the slo motion too. Have you seen the trailers for Assasin's Creed? Your work gives me the same feel. I think like me you have a great starting point for something bigger in the future. I think obviously the biggest challenge we all faced in this was actually finishing. Impressed, well done.

11-18-2007, 12:33 AM
Thanks man. I haven't seen the trailer no, only a few pictures, maybe I should :)
You are right, it's been an amazing experience actually finishing this! Up to a good starting point and then it can be taken from there... feels great, a bit of relaxation is in order :)
I've learned so extremely much during this challenge that has been compressed into my memory ready for further use.
There's always another step though it seems.. ;)

11-18-2007, 12:47 AM
wow, pretty surreal one. Nice atmosphere and glows  good luck...

11-18-2007, 12:53 AM
Thanks Oweron! Surreal, yes, I like surreal... ;)
Funny I was just watching yours...

11-18-2007, 11:10 PM
Check this out mate, might see some similarities in mood and style. Of course the era's are slightly different ;) Cheers

11-18-2007, 11:42 PM
Haha yes, slightly different eras.. ;)
I see what you mean though, those moody scenes. Particulary when looking at my android with his hoodie, he could look like those fellas with their hoodies... quite a lot at times. Itīs harder to find similarities with the other characters in my animation... ;)
Thanks for the link mate! Enjoyable, not long ago I was living a couple of hundred meters away from those guys... now, thereīs a pretty big ocean between us ;)

11-19-2007, 12:39 PM
My favorite entry without a doubt. Good solid work all around. Imaginative and original in every respect, refreshing! It is "hard to get", and very enjoyable to watch and ponder. The cat and butterfly are especially rare and beatiful in this dystopic moonlit mood. All in all interesting, strange and unlike anything else, congratulations.

I hope the judges pay you the deserved respects, good luck! :)

11-19-2007, 11:25 PM
Those are nice words Kasper!! :)
I'm happy you like it, also good to see you in here!
