View Full Version : HMC 10: Animals in Motion: Angry Hippo
08 August 2007, 07:39 PM
I was watching a nature program on Hippos not so long ago and they looked like the perfect animal for me to model and improve my sculpting skills. Anyway i learnt that they can be very angry animals! So for this challenge im going to be sculpting an angry hippo. Here are some of the reference images ill be using.
Hopefully ill get started on the model in the next few days and actually get it completed for deadline...

Managed to get some time to start on the base mesh, long way to go! I think i done enough today for my first update. Jus trying to get the base done as quick as possible, this took me longer than i thought it would. Approx 2 hrs.

Neat! What a fine addition to the current challenge roster. Hippos are always great and I like your progress so far. Cant wait for more.

Little update: As you can see the way i work is quite random lol. Going to be using mudbox to sort out the overall form and proportions once ive got the base mesh completed.

I love your modeling style (somewhat the same way I do it :P)
The hippo is looking great so far.

yay besh mesh is pretty much complete, jus needs abit of fine tuning. Not really lookin to get the proportions perfect at this stage its gonna be much easier to do in mudbox. Besides im impatient i want to get sculpting already! lol

After 1 hrs sculpting, still pretty loose...

Some more for today
08 August 2007, 06:19 PM
Good work. Keep it out! :)
08 August 2007, 07:31 PM
Workin on sections at a time, still quite abit to do but its gettin there..
08 August 2007, 07:56 PM
The sculpt is looking very good so far!
You may want to pull the sides of the mouth inward a bit more. In the reference photos it looks thinner there where the mouth stretches.
08 August 2007, 08:17 PM
Your right its lookin abit too wide at the moment thanks for the suggestion! Think what i may have to do is open the mouth wider and then bring the sides of the mouth in abit more.
08 August 2007, 08:18 PM
Coming along nice dude, I reckon modelling in a bit of clear saliva flying out the final model would look quite cool...
09 September 2007, 03:43 AM
Still need to work on the legs and toes and then ill prob start adding more detail at a higher level or maybe i should pose it first. The inside of the mouth shall be interesting..
James adding saliva will be a kool idea for the final renders :)

This is going to be great! Very good work so far. Nicely spotted by KrakenCMT too (the thing about the width of the mouth). That made it much better even. Looking forward to seeing the main body beeing sculpted. It looks very smooth and clean now. I suppose the symmetrical pose adds to the "cleanlyness", but still it would be cool to see some more fine level wrinkles around the neck, armpits and some bulges on the chest/belly.
Keep us posted.

Ok not really a major update, havent had time to work on this lately but hopefully I can finish the model for the deadline. Been doing the UVs and now I think im at the stage where I can start detailing the model with finer skin wrinkles and bumps. Oh yeh the legs still need some work aswell. Ill put together some sort of pose after although I dont think it will be a very dynamic one lol. I should have another update tomorrow of the detailing.

Started the detail process, I must say its a bit of a rush job since deadline is looming! Wanted to detail on one level higher but my comp cant seem to handle it and it would take forever for me to get it all done. Detail wont hold up on close ups but should be ok for full body shots. Not sure if im even goin to have time to rig it.. detailing is taking longer than expected.

Havent finished detailing just yet but I wanted to test the displacement. As pixelranger said the main body is looking very clean at the moment. So i think i will try to add some roughness with some fine detailing in that area as well as the legs.

The interior of the mouth looks especially nice. Great job!
How about making those "sleeves" on the legs a bit more droopy?!
09 September 2007, 05:27 PM
Thanks razorsedge the sleeves looked abit wierd as they were so ive changed it abit now. Going to try to a quick rig and pose the hippo and then start doing some renders.
09 September 2007, 09:51 AM
Final posed image ready to be submitted! Now I just need to get the orthographics together.
Thanks for all the C&Cs. This challenge was fun :)

Nice hippo. I love that menacing mouth.
09 September 2007, 03:00 PM
Great finish on the hippo! I actually like the 4th to the last render best where you get to see his face a bit more. You really did a nice job with it!
09 September 2007, 07:14 PM
Thanks Quardart and KrakenCMT I really love your pieces! Lol my sis said she didnt really like the final render cos you cant see his face properly, I see what she means.
