View Full Version : HMC#10: Walrus

Going to try and make a walrus, or a group of them.
Got the head started, tried using zbrush for some details but my mouse randomly clicks, so gotta fix that first.

Did the basic body shape, and fixed the mouth and nose

Finished the basic mesh, started in zbrush

Did more of the skin, this is the best result I got after several tries.

Based the skin off of this walrus. The walrus I used as a ref for modeling had such a different head though :scream: , they all look so different.

Worked on the flippers and tail thing.
Going to work on the face now.

The reason the head looks different from the photo, is because yours is way too square. Try to look up some photos of the seal's scull and then make amends accordingly. It's all about the anatomy, people :)

To make your life easier in Z-brush, why don't you create custom alpha maps, by exploring in detail the creases and the various bumps of the seal in real life. Check this thread out:

and, as well as the head, the body has no real flow to it. it has the detail, but its all straight, but i'd imagine there should be some muscle lines/fat folds/organ shapes somewhere. For instance, you don't seem to have particuly defined shoulder blades. I would have done this before adding the detail, of course, you can go which ever way you like, but it's prolly easier to get the form right first.
Keep at it :)

Ty for the comments :)

I'm going to try and shape the head better, more round, might be a little hard now though

As for the muscles and stuff, all the reference pics I have found don't really show any, but you are right about the fat folds. I'm going to see what pose I want to do so I can add the folds where the bends are.

Made the head rounder, and shorter. I think it looks more like a walrus now.

The nose needs a lot of work still.
