View Full Version : Frost Giant, Jed (3D)
Some of you might remember that character I had started sometime last summer. It was modeled after a painting from Paul Bonner. The WIP thread from back then seems to have fallen into the oblivion of a server crash. Rats !
Anyways, here's the final piece. It was started in Max4 and finished in 5, rendered in Brazil. Nothing too special about modeling and lighting, but for those interested there are a few WIP pics along with wireframes and concept design on my website here (http://www.jed-online.com/wip/wip04.html).
I also made a shameless self-promoting wallpaper that you can get here (http://www.jed-online.com/wip/Frost_GiantWP.jpg) .
Hope you all like it.

AWSOME! no crits here!!! well maybe two.... The skulls really stick out because they look like they are lit differently. Plus it would be nice to maybe see a light snow fall over the top of it all. But awsome stuff
Waiting for the front page plug.....
03-27-2003, 06:19 AM
It's about time you reposted it :p I see you did a snazzy new composition. Really dig it. [plugged] ;)

03-27-2003, 06:59 AM
How did you go about making the veins in the arms?! please tell!! :D
03-27-2003, 07:01 AM
Absolutely Superb
I remember seeing this WIP last year...the untextured version was impressive enough, but this is just awesome.
Great attention to detail in the skin, the veins in his biceps, those cloth "bracers' on his forearms......
Where's the steam coming from tho? Him?
Always thought a frost giant would sorta have a low body temp to match his surroundings :D
03-27-2003, 07:03 AM
yeah love those muscles+veins awsome work can u post some wireframes? :buttrock:
03-27-2003, 07:12 AM
sweet *right click save as*
added to my collection of your previous wips
i really like his skin:thumbsup:
the only thing is the back lighting on the skulls, looks a little odd to me, but other than that, perfect
03-27-2003, 07:16 AM
:bounce: This is definitely AMAZING....I would love to see him with a different darker and more contrast lighting also...
03-27-2003, 07:18 AM

03-27-2003, 07:24 AM

03-27-2003, 07:44 AM
Nice! Could you pretty-please make a wallpaper that's 1600x1200?
Where the hell do you get off sayn there is nothing special about the modelling.
I would give my right teste to model like that now.
Fantastic dude, i loved your wip when it was up and was very exited when i saw you pluged.
03-27-2003, 07:57 AM
This still stays my favorite model of all time (here on cgtalk.com)

03-27-2003, 08:27 AM

03-27-2003, 08:42 AM

yep yep yep!!!! love it a lot!
03-27-2003, 09:10 AM
Nice job as usual !!
vraiment excellent jed !
tu peut faire un wallpaper en 1600 * 1200 stp ??
les veines sont faites comment ??? modelisé ?
PS: tu t'eclates chez Blur alors ?? :wavey:
03-27-2003, 09:18 AM
jed... only two words... YOU ROCK!!!
03-27-2003, 09:19 AM
This is simply amazing! Yeah it would be more atmospheric to see snow flakes falling, and the other thing is that the left bicep looks too flexed for an arm in that position. Other than that.........I worship the keys on the keyboard you use, and the mouse your fingers have touched...
03-27-2003, 09:24 AM
you have GOT to be kidding me...
one of my favorite postings on CG Talk since I joined
you raised the bar with this one
03-27-2003, 09:44 AM
well done :buttrock:
Veins and horns are very realistic! The tears of cloths work well!
You shall give more consistency has the buckle of belt, seen the mass of this character, it should quickly give up with one such thickness. You seem to master well hairs, it is pity to have no eyebrows, that misses a little on the face. But if it is like that on the design, the tastes that is discussed not :) . I regret however that we do not feel more the shadows thrown on the beard and the hair.
Good continuation +
Sorry for my poor english:shrug:
03-27-2003, 09:45 AM
Hey Jed nice stuff i remember seing this a while ago. but me like s alot. I like the way you put together a WIP link to see the progress. that is really helpful for others. Excellent. stuff my man.
03-27-2003, 10:08 AM
Really good work (sure) especially (for me) lighting and texturing...so good.
Just a little question dundee.......where is his family? ;-)
03-27-2003, 10:26 AM
Wish there would be some more in the background.
It´s too empty.
But on the character, no critics.
WONDERFULL, IMPRESIVE WORK !
Absolutely worked model and textured.
Try to put some wind and snow falling.
03-27-2003, 10:40 AM
Texturing is amazing. The beard and the hair fits the style perfectly.
I like the whole style very much. :applause:
03-27-2003, 11:01 AM
I love it  ...You got a place on my desktop right now...moehaha
03-27-2003, 11:13 AM
Well.........it was and still is a kick-ass job!!!!!!!!
I'm very happy you made it to the top dundee....and Faya is right, he needs family .
03-27-2003, 11:20 AM
Excellent Jed !!!:applause: :applause:
It's on my desktop too !!
While I think it's great.I am bothered by the nose,it looks like a Mr.Potatoe head nose stuck on there. And the eye brows are missing,it hurts the rest of the high detailed work. But maybe that's a design for this guy.
Still very nice work indeed.
03-27-2003, 11:50 AM
great details.I like the arms muscles and veins best.
03-27-2003, 11:55 AM
03-27-2003, 12:07 PM
wow 5star!:applause: :applause:
03-27-2003, 12:15 PM

03-27-2003, 12:28 PM
Looks awsome Jed!
Well done Jed :)
See you soon
03-27-2003, 12:32 PM
hhhmm hhmm, no crits for me
03-27-2003, 01:05 PM
Really great work!
03-27-2003, 01:10 PM
Nothing special about the modeling?? I'll have you know I was sending people the link to the last one you posted way back when because it was that good!! This is superb....I can see his story unfolding before my eyes right now..............
03-27-2003, 01:26 PM
He suck off Grimli
03-27-2003, 01:37 PM
Oh yeah, that's the good stuff!
Exceptionally nice work. (I rarely give this rating...):applause:
Really slick looking...
Perhaps a little bit too clean, for the character. I'd expect such a character to be stinking of all sorts of foul smelling odors. He looks like he just got out of the bath tub.
Good work though.
03-27-2003, 02:35 PM
Looks cool.. was confused at first thought his sword was a 3rd leg or something, the sheath (sp?) being the same color/material as his pants.
03-27-2003, 03:09 PM
only crit would be the snow :P
awesome.. 5 stars :)
03-27-2003, 03:31 PM
Awesome! :) Truly inspiring... although I would like to see it with a matte background ;)
03-27-2003, 03:40 PM
aahahahaha, this is nuts!
I loev this, a little mad no bg was added and his fingers on the staff look kinda suspect but the obverall style and shit... wow! This make me want to stop being a pussy and open up max OUTSIDE of school for a change.
I dig this HEAPS, keep freaking it. :airguitar :airguitar :airguitar
awesome work, nothing more to add!
Very very very nice:drool:
03-27-2003, 04:54 PM
youch jerome, great textures! they fit exactly with the references you show on your site
that's really impressive man!!!got only 2 crits: i think he deserves a background (a 2d one would be great!) and i agree with mat about his cleanliness....he should be putrid, his clothes should be full of blood and all that kinda stuff (u know what i mean..)
03-27-2003, 05:00 PM
Perfect ... nothing to add! :applause:
03-27-2003, 06:07 PM
Looks awesome!! :) :) :)
Now that I've got that out of the way, I do have some comments:
The black sky bugs me. Even if you didn't add any more elements (mountains, hills, things in distance, etc), I think some stars in that blackness would make the whole piece look much stronger than it already is.
The lighting is a bit uniform, almost like he is standing under a street lamp or something. If you're just trying to show off the model with this image, then maybe you can disregard this comment.
The last comment may just be me, but the sword case and the knee are too similar. When I first looked at the image, my eye was drawn to that area because of this. Maybe the sword case could be a slightly different color or texture? Maybe it doesn't follow the leg so closely?
This is a really strong piece, so don't take these comments the wrong way. I think with a few minor tweaks, you could turn this awesome image into something un-be-frikin-lievable!!
03-27-2003, 06:07 PM
The only thing that I would think would complete the scene would be either a human or a woodland creature to put the character to scale...just an idea.
But still, awesome!
03-27-2003, 07:35 PM
post a wire without meshsmoot plz!!!!
03-27-2003, 07:41 PM
 :bounce: With your permission of course..your image is my new desktop!!!
03-27-2003, 07:59 PM
show off :P
now get back to work
03-27-2003, 08:12 PM
very nice. There's nothing conventional about it.
The only thing that bothered me that may not have been mentioned is that the angle of the sword is a bit odd. Pulling it out from that angle would be awkward, I imagine.
And also I agree that the color of the sheath being a similar color to his pants was somewhat confusing at first. I thought there was something funky going on with his legs for a split second. I think somebody else mentioned something along the same lines.
But at this point everything is just nitpicking. Good job!
03-27-2003, 08:28 PM
very nice work i love it:airguitar
03-27-2003, 08:42 PM
freakin awesome man. lighting is great.....only critiques from me are the snow looks a lil funky, too flat and the bottom tuft of his berd looks a bit off from the rest of the berd....the hair on the berd is damn spiffy though
03-27-2003, 09:03 PM
I think you need to give something for scale, I mean the skulls give you an idea of how big he is, but I think you should add a human, or some trees, or something of that nature, I think it would really add to the composition.
03-27-2003, 09:28 PM
look at those hands!!!!, the hands are so real....looook!!!!
03-27-2003, 09:40 PM
I'm a bit of a lurker but my crit is along the same lines of giving it scale. Throw in a small village or even a single hut to throw the guy some scale. Awesome job by the way. :buttrock:
03-27-2003, 09:56 PM
Awesome textures! You managed to make it really look cold. :airguitar
But why did you make the wallpaper less detailed? (different lighting?)
03-27-2003, 11:15 PM
Amazing work Jed ! I realy love the materials and fur.
Et encore merci pour tout :)
03-27-2003, 11:32 PM
hé Bravo Jerome
ça kill trop!!!!
comme quoi que ça rend bon de bosser aux States
tu as une longue vie, on parlait de toi ce matin avec Daniel....
03-27-2003, 11:40 PM
Great stuff man, i'm impressive............
PS : T'as raison Franck, les states ça lui réussi trop bien à Jed.
Sinon Jérome ça va tu t'y plais à Blur le taff tout quoi?
03-28-2003, 12:06 AM
 f#$%ing sweet man
Oh my, 5 pages of comment :surprised
Thanks a lot to whole those that took the time to post some kind comments. I really appreciate it. And I'm glad you all like it.
I started that character while I was in between two jobs and had lots of free time. I wanted to challenge myself with a very detailed character to get ready for my new job at Blur Studios. I came upon that painting from Paul Bonner and it had everything I was looking for : displaced horns, shag hair beard, and lots of different fabrics. It was a lot of fun to model and texture but I had to set it aside while I was moving overseas. Lil Dragon pressured me to repost it and I just threw in a VERY basic environment so I would be able to call it finished.
So yes I agree with all comments about the environment and lighting, but I really wanted the character to be the main point of interest on that piece. Maybe some day I will have enough free time to model a cool environment that would match the character's level of detail, but right now I don't. And I also want to move on to something new, I really feel I have spent too much time on this one. One day maybe...
Those interested can find some more images on my website here (http://www.jed-online.com/3d/ch_giant_1.html) , along with wireframes and WIP. And I will provide bigger wallpaper only if Derelict gives me high rez pics of his avatar :)
Thanks a lot all

03-28-2003, 02:47 AM

Well now that Derelict has fulfilled his part of the deal I guess I have no other choice than post a bigger version of that wallpaper. I updated the link to it on the first page to a massive 1600*1200. Enjoy
03-28-2003, 07:46 AM

04-01-2003, 08:56 AM
VERAMENTE PERFETTO(GOOD JOB)
04-04-2003, 04:05 AM
I was just looking at the painting...your model really does it justice! While I know it's not supposed to be an exact copy of the one in the painting, I think it'd be cool if you add the fur around his scabbard and the feathery stuff on his elbows. Excellent work.
04-04-2003, 05:22 AM
WOW!!! i really admire your mental modelling abilities!!! you're truely insane! you're an amazing artist!!!
04-23-2003, 12:23 AM
06-24-2003, 07:43 PM
Great attention to detail, the fabrics look convincing. Good modeling and overall proportion. I would do something about the little sculls though, seem a bit out of place.
Keep it up!
07-16-2003, 05:22 AM
love it all the way!
07-16-2003, 06:44 AM
Thats some awsome modelling!
Also checked out your work on your site. Can't wait to see some more stuff of yours. Good job.
