my concept for a short. I dim witted Hippo plans to cross a canyon by flying across... using a chicken as a means of flight. Not too clever.

I'll be working on storyboards and get a 2d animatic going soon for timing.. but there's no option to upload animatics? er......

Nice clean modeling on the hippo, man. Looks promising!
I'm unsure too how to upload animatics or video with a filesize limit of 150KB!?!

08-07-2007, 10:57 AM
hey Martin! Nice to see you around and entering ( and entertaining ). Nice concept and nicely done hippo. Even I do miss few things from your sketch like two fingers feet and few sharper edges, I think you are on great  Good luck!

08-07-2007, 10:52 PM
Your hippo model looks really nice. Wondering if your gonna mke it so the chicken is held to the hippo's back with straps?Cool stuff:thumbsup:

08-08-2007, 01:48 AM
Cool progress...the model is pretty good...keep progressing!:)

08-08-2007, 03:43 AM
hey hey the hippo is looking good... i love his overall form!! its so interesting!... great jon on the modeling... now drop him from the sky weeeee:bounce:

08-09-2007, 07:59 AM
very nice hippo, great shapes. but maybe a bit to normal to stand out and be rememberable?
he lacks that "special thing" that gets stuck in your memory and you associate him with. like a big diaper held by suspenders cause it is so full of... nah..
maybe some experiments with colors and render will be enough. or maybe when the pose and bird comes into the picture that might give it that little extra.
looking forward to see where you will take it! :wip:

08-09-2007, 11:58 PM
Hi, :bounce:

A cute and well thought character again from you. A big one and a small one. Definitely a Martin Sen style! Agree with fellah. Maybe a killer nose art on the hippo. Like old fashion airplanes. Ok, just joking. It's on progress and am sure you will create a stunning stuff as always!

Just :buttrock: again!

haven't had much time for the challenge lately.. Sadly real life is priority ;( I don't think I can finish my original concept, in terms of animation it's a bit hectic ;( I storyboarded it, and it worked out to 25 shots.. hmm, might not have time..

so I've been playing around with simpler ideas so I can finish... lingering on an idea of a space astronaut at the arcade games, sitting in a toy shuttle for 2yr olds.

08-16-2007, 10:51 PM
well...thats cool too....he looks like buzzlightyear....and is more stranger than before...i thinks that is a better idea.....so...do it:scream:

08-17-2007, 08:22 AM
THis idea is as cool as the first one.
Keep going !

08-17-2007, 04:57 PM
very nice model, I'm waiting for more.

08-17-2007, 05:26 PM
Dude ur a very talented modeler...I'm very impressed with the clean models i see here.. the head is looking very good and totally reflects the concept work... job well done... now show me more some poly!!:bounce:

08-17-2007, 05:50 PM
Hey...nice modeling there...is really a good one....i want to see him finished!

08-17-2007, 05:53 PM
@ania - thx, working on the body, that's going to be slooooow

@overcontrast - thx man, guess im old school poly modeller...but I think it works for cartoony shapes ;p

@gpepper - thx, hope I can finish!

@melkao - buzz who? hehe, j/k... I think the buzzlighter character is so iconic that any astronaut/space-suited character is automatically compared to him ;( give me some credit, it looks nothing like him ;p

08-17-2007, 06:35 PM
@melkao - buzz who? hehe, j/k... I think the buzzlighter character is so iconic that any astronaut/space-suited character is automatically compared to him ;( give me some credit, it looks nothing like him ;p

i'll hav to agree with Versiden... the guy dosent look anything like Buzz!

08-17-2007, 07:23 PM
@melkao - buzz who? hehe, j/k... I think the buzzlighter character is so iconic that any astronaut/space-suited character is automatically compared to him ;( give me some credit, it looks nothing like him ;p

LOL...hahahahaha...i'm not saying that is the same character...just i am feeling the inspiration...that is cool like buzz...cause he has something like buzz on his shape!

anyway....is buzz's brother...ok?

08-20-2007, 07:22 PM

the progress so far... should be done in a day I think so I can start rigging.

08-22-2007, 05:58 PM
dude that is looking fine!!!... o love how you used form and shape on the astronaut! jopb well done.. now put some color on the guy!!.. will be waiting for ur update!... ciao

08-22-2007, 06:35 PM
nice modeling dude.. love the character design .. wooo!!

08-22-2007, 06:45 PM
Great contrasting shapes you got in that design! Really flows well. :)

Started on the rig, mostly I've completed the top half of the body, lower half to go! ;p
I'm enveloping on a low poly version of the body, it's easier that way.

comments welcome, l8r

08-23-2007, 08:08 PM
@overcontrast - looking fwd to a textured render too.. not looking fwd to unwrapping ;(

@Wayne jermaine - thx man

@Sandpiper - thanks dude.. hope the best isn't too bulky and hope it doesn't get in the way of animation

08-24-2007, 06:33 AM
Excellent modeling !
The rig looks cool even if I'm not very good in that part of the job.

08-24-2007, 02:20 PM
Excellent modeling !
The rig looks cool even if I'm not very good in that part of the job.

well...ai'm not so good with that too!....it looks amazing....i have to work on that!:scream:

comments welcome.

08-27-2007, 06:12 PM
Great to see you in the challenge. Nice character design :D

08-27-2007, 07:04 PM
Skinning and blendshapes looks cool !

08-27-2007, 09:44 PM
dude the rig looks awesome!!!.. gr8 job on the skinning and the character looks very alive in those poses... gr8 job done!... keep on goin i got my eyes on ya!

08-28-2007, 03:18 AM
Solid rig Martin, he looks like loads of fun to play with... there's a small loss of volume around the knees when fully rotated but it shouldn't bug you unless you plan to go that far... Keep the killer updates coming:cool:

08-28-2007, 03:36 AM
Wow nice job!...the charactes has noce moves!....keep going!:D

08-28-2007, 12:33 PM
Very cool rig and lively poses!! :buttrock: like DaddyMack said the knees are a bit too flat when the leg's rotated and i assume he's gonna sit in the toy shuttle with his legs all bent cuz he cant fit. Looking forward for your next update

08-28-2007, 03:20 PM
@authentic - thx man, it's been a while ;p

@gpepper - thx, alot of work still left to be done, at least the shapes are complete, just have to rig it together

@overcontrast - ta, i admire ur work too, keep it going!

@DaddyMack, @theblahblah - ye, its a small problem for now, still needs to be tweaked..need to add extra deformers to it I guess... argh, too many nulls already ;p

@melkao - thx for the comments

08-28-2007, 09:08 PM
really cool character and rig. show us a deformation or rig test :D (movie file!)

08-28-2007, 11:02 PM
@DaddyMack, @theblahblah - ye, its a small problem for now, still needs to be tweaked..need to add extra deformers to it I guess... argh, too many nulls already ;p

You could just plug a simple morph target/ blendshape into the rotiation of the knee to correct the tighter angles... Keep rockin mate

08-28-2007, 11:09 PM
@DaddyMack - ye, thought of that... it doesn't often work for a full range of motions, it's a quick fix approach... I'll do it if I'm feeling lazy ;p ..thx man!

still working on the plane, I got the base shape working. I want to keep it quite simple looking, so nothing crazy.

It's quite difficult getting the right size, since the astronaut is so bulky.. I think it's working for now. I'll keep tweaking tho..

comments welcome..

08-30-2007, 08:49 PM
Hee hee :D that's great Versiden, I think you nailed the proportions and he looks nuts too:thumbsup:

08-30-2007, 08:51 PM
Thats it!!! I give up! Theres no hope for the rest of us with people like you in the world.... :D

Awesome job man! Really great! How much time have you put into it so far? A couple of hours a night? or are you just that fast?

08-30-2007, 08:53 PM
hahahhahaha...that looks so fun!...i want to do it...and his stupid face is killing me....good job!

08-30-2007, 10:25 PM
@DaddyMack - thx man, I'll keep at it.

@slangford - not sure, I haven't been clocking... I'd say on average maybe 5hrs a day

@melkao - lol, thx for the comments

08-31-2007, 02:31 PM

09-05-2007, 06:52 AM

I hope you can do the whole thing !

09-05-2007, 04:17 PM

09-05-2007, 06:32 PM
awesome story and storyboard!!... really love the humer. I think u might think abt keeping the suspence for a bit longer. The stars could be a big display screen showsing a space game preview. Just an idea... keep it up.. its looking good!

I've been working on the set layout, arranging the arcade machines, get working on my light rig. Happy with the mood so far.. everything is a grey lambert for now, except the head which has a sss skin shader on it..

anyway..back to work

09-05-2007, 10:27 PM
@gpepper, overcontrast & melkao - thx guys, can't wait till I can get animated and get everything else out the way. I'll work on the camera angles more in the 3d animatic.

09-06-2007, 10:04 AM
It looks cool. I like the story too.

Nice start with the lighting !
Do you plane to put things on the floor ?

09-07-2007, 01:04 PM
IT is very good inspiration for us,

keep the good work,

all the best to u.

textured the arcade games in the background, I've used video captures of old arcade games that I have for the screens. mame32.. ahh nostalgia ;p

textured the floor pattern, and done with the ship textures, few tweaks and fixes still.. like the glass shader on the ship.. but otherwise, moving onto texturing the main character...

09-07-2007, 08:29 PM
excellent martin. i'm very enthousiastic about your entry. Great lighting.

09-07-2007, 08:51 PM
Looks very impressive, man! :wise:

09-07-2007, 09:01 PM

09-08-2007, 01:23 AM
WEEEeeeee e e e e ee .. . . . ..

09-08-2007, 07:40 PM
chueet job on the lighting and color man... u go brotha!

09-09-2007, 09:31 AM
Fantastic! Ah, the good ol' times, when game character were just few pixels and not milion of polygons!

09-09-2007, 01:02 PM
Hey Martin...

i love colors...
(i like rest a little glow to video games... why? simply:
If i can see old games in screens... problably
I will remember those times more easy.

How many hours of Galaxians.... oooooohhhh....)

other option is iluminate s little more the names of games in machines... (TOP).

but this is only my opinion....

Remeber..... your work are SPECTACULAR!!

i love the style.

09-09-2007, 04:14 PM
you got a great sence for cartoons, Martin! i'm a big fan of purple(and penis noses.. :/ ) so this is definitely my cup of tea and something i will enjoy following.

09-09-2007, 06:25 PM
It is exactly how I imagined !
Great job, I can't wait to see the texture work on the spaceman !
Did you use a SSS shader ? His nose seems to be very transluscent ?

09-09-2007, 07:16 PM
@authentic - thx man, It's the main lighting for now, and I'll tweak it for each shot

@melkao - maybe he's distant distant cousin ;p

@DaddyMack - lol, ye.. animation gonna be fun!

@overcontrast - thx for the comments man,

@medunecer - i know...life was so much simpler, 8 bit nintendo games, and swore thumbs!

@infoarq - I'm not sure about copyright or if I'm aloud to use brand logos, so I've used a generic label for each aracde (Except for the shooter which says Time crisis3, I think I should remove it) Can u make out Street fighter II in the distance? love that game ;p

@fellah - lol, dude, now everytime I look at him I see a penis nose... argh!! thx!

@gpepper - ye, it's a sss fast skin shader. Is the nose a bit too translucent?

09-09-2007, 07:20 PM
The nose and the face seem a bit too transluscent to me, yes.

09-09-2007, 11:26 PM
All I can say is, Wow! I really like the way you are pulling this together so well.

It's all amazing! :)

09-10-2007, 02:50 AM
I love it.:bounce:

here's the progress I've made so far. Textures mostly done, I've made a point to keep it very simple. I haven't yet made any changes to the sss level on the skin, will adjust it a bit later.

Need to move on quickly... only 3 weeks left for me, have to start on the boy character, then onto animation..

09-11-2007, 05:27 PM
@gpepper - yeh, I'll look into it, thx man!

@Paul4wood - thx for the support, glad u like it so far

@behzad - :thumbsup::thumbsup: sweeet dude

09-11-2007, 07:30 PM
nice going mate!!!.... IMO the skin is a bit too redish?... Love the expressions on his face... keep going!

09-11-2007, 08:33 PM
Nice !
Is the noise wanted ?

09-11-2007, 08:53 PM
@overcontrast - I've got a very purple key light on the left that makes it look that way, I guess it will be ok once it's in the environment.

@gpepper - it's a low sample render for now, nope.. noise not wanted in the final

09-12-2007, 12:49 AM
very nice, like your works from previous challenge, so no question this going to another GREAT work!!:)

09-12-2007, 11:32 AM

No. We Love This Character!! And Textures. (and His Perfect Poses)

09-12-2007, 11:49 AM
its wonderfull work :) can't wait to see the first anim test

09-12-2007, 07:12 PM
Heīs obviously really a tuff guy... cool expression, nice concept...

Keep it up:thumbsup:

09-12-2007, 09:57 PM
Martin is Congratulation.Beautiful face to convey and Texture..

09-13-2007, 09:48 PM
I like very much the colours and the form, it reminds me on Toy Story and Disney production in a good sense... it is very eatable!
Countdown and Launch! :)

09-14-2007, 04:44 AM
I really like the expression on the character. You might want to move the light source up just a bit though. In its current position, it lights the character from below, giving him a bit of a creepy look... Unless that's what you're going for.

09-14-2007, 06:54 AM
By looking at your storyboard, I'd also would say to not show the arcade"hall", untill the very last moment. IMO there will be a bigger climax at the end! Great characterization and very nice idea! I''l follow along..

09-14-2007, 07:30 PM
This is looking really terrific! I hope you get everything done in time... you could always cut out the boy if need be. I know it's not your plan to, but it would be a shame to not see your final entry finished, it's so terrific! Anyhow, great work!

some doodles of the boy character. I've been too lazy to scan these in, did this a few days ago.. started on the model, will post WIP's soon.

09-15-2007, 03:42 PM
hey Martin nice drawings... If you want my opinion, sudnt the kid be more younger... I'd say somehting around 4-5 yeas old.. just a cute little thing.. that wud make the whole situation more stranger... just my opinion... cant waut to see the model done...

modeling all over again ;p

wip of the kid model so far, I've tried to make him alot younger from my sketches, thx for the advice overcontrast ;p

going to add more detail/wrinkles to the cloth.. more to come

09-16-2007, 03:38 PM
Nice start Martin !
I agree with Zubuyer, making him younger was a nice idea !

09-17-2007, 02:31 AM
oh nice kid....now we are progressing very welll....keep going!

09-17-2007, 07:27 PM
its wonderfull!

boy wip so far, I thought it would be cool if I continue on the space theme, I've modeled toy props for the kid.

I don't usually go off modeling without a complete design, very bad approach.. lol ;((

@infoarq, xioncajou, Hazaro, npantic, tastatura, overcontrast, gpepper, melkao - thx for the crits guys.. appreciated it

@vmulligan - thx for the suggestion, lighting isn't final, but I'll take that into consideration.. ;p

@MVDB - ye, the intro is bugging me a bit.. I want to keep it thr longer too

@walrus - thx for the comments, hate leaving things out, hope it doens't come to that

@julianobezerra - ye, Im going a bit off on a tangent.. there's no return! ;)))

09-17-2007, 08:46 PM
excellent martin. I love the helmet and its relation size to the head of the boy. Nice work on the clothes too. Is it by using zbrush/mudbox or is it "real" modeling ?

09-17-2007, 08:59 PM
sweet modeling on the kid bro... me likeee! no crits.. go on..

09-17-2007, 09:15 PM
great model....

i love these little details in clothes.

09-17-2007, 09:24 PM
Beautiful modelling on the kid, love the mouth :) Very Pixar. Can see you're a pro, everything is very tidy, nice work. Lots of wow factor, congrats

09-17-2007, 11:45 PM
@authentic - heya, the clothes are modelled, no zbrush or mudbox

@overcontrast, infoarq, Trickz - thx for the feedback guys! texturing soon, not going to do alot of blendshapes for this character, so it shouldn't take long

09-18-2007, 06:53 AM
I don't usually go off modeling without a complete design, very bad approach.. lol ;((

Looks nice all the same !

done with the boy character, I'll probably tweak the shaders more over time, but the rig is done for the most part.

struggled with the textures, XSI can't smooth out UV's.. so it's a guess as to where ur painting most of the time, haven't found a work around this yet (any suggestions?)

ok.. moving on .. ;p l8r

09-19-2007, 01:06 AM
 I want his Tshirt!

Seriously tho.. he looks great V! He has a real commercial quality feel to him which I think helps carry the theme you've got growing further. His face is somewhat obscured by the visor though... it could make it more difficult to communicate his expressions clearly... Maybe less reflect?

A question for you about the knees if I may... How have you gone about handling the leg and pants for deformation around the knee area? I've always had trouble with pants that stop below the knee and I'm curious if you've got any magic tro share about it

09-19-2007, 06:09 AM
kik start there ! very impressive cute little model and urpropositions r great. can i know which pakage u r using?

all the very best,
cheers ,

09-19-2007, 07:01 AM
wow, this little guy will surely be refreshment to the scene, he is in clours and the size different from main character! Excellent work!

09-19-2007, 07:02 AM
As Daddy said, I want it too ! :bounce:
A top work here again ! He is great !
It smells somthing good for the final jury here !

09-19-2007, 03:35 PM
In your objectīs texture projection PPG thereīs checkbox for "smooth when subdividing". Not sure if this is what you are looking for. Anyway, very proffesional approach in here. Keep up great work!

09-19-2007, 04:23 PM
@DaddyMack - thx man, I want this tshirt too lol... as for the knees, I haven't done anything, the bit of the shorts that fall below the knee bend with it, it's not a perfect rig at all, but for the purposes of this project, I don't need to be bend completely, so I haven't yet fixed the knee/shorts area. Hope I make sense. I'll fix it later after the challenge and use him for future animations.

ye, the visor is a problem.. I'll continue tweaking

@pixelpiyan - I'm using XSI|Softimage

@npantic - thx alot for ur comments

@gpepper - hehe, lol thx.. ur work is gr8 too!

@Oweron - I found that, but it isn't perfect work around, When I actually stamp the UV mesh, I'm looking for a way to smooth that, so I know exactly where to paint. 3dS max had it.. and I never had problem with coords. XSI is tricky. I tried subdividing the mesh, the relax under the texture editor, but it also isn't perfect - it smoothes in some areas, and other parts it's jaggered... Any thx for the help ;p

09-19-2007, 04:54 PM
Hey...that kid looks amazing......pixar quality!......nice work...this is one of my favorites!

We never really stood a chance against you this time mate... It's clear that you've invested solid energy into this Martin and my spidey sense tingles every time I see an update.

The stop start and hold business you've got going in the animation gives it a really playful sense. I love the spot after he pushes the button and also the stretch on his face when it flies by close up.

I watched it a few times and the only point that stuck out as potentially needing attention is the rodeo pose (Right arm in the air) something seems a little off with the weight but I can't pin what

Humble  good sir

10-04-2007, 11:57 PM
It's a  and a  good to be here to watch. Honestly one of the best moments during challenge. Thanks for!

10-05-2007, 04:58 AM

Great job Martin !

10-05-2007, 11:49 AM
There are some excelent animatins martin. I suppose that they will be cut by flashed or other scenes ?

10-05-2007, 09:57 PM
wow...the integration between the character and the ship is amazing, and good job with the face expresions...nice job my friend!

I've changed shot 1 from the storyboard, I didn't have time model the helmet... so I made the shot a bit simpler, or harder.. depends on how u see it ;p

@DaddyMack - thx for the fresh set of eyes, I'll try to see what's off with it

@Tremoside, HFix, adib, gpepperm fellah- heya, thx for comments guys. I'll try to finish

@authentic - yeh, I was thinking about that.. I'll see what works when I get to the comp'ing phase.. thx man

@melkao - the body mechanics are quite a challenge, but I'm having fun animating this guy ;p

10-09-2007, 11:11 PM
Amazing again !
Looks already perfect ! With the render and sound, this animation is going to be great !

10-10-2007, 01:54 AM
Pure V! sweetness in the new anim too, well done... I thought about the rodeo shot and I think it's because the ship appears to propel him briefly whereas in most of the others it kinda looks like he's making it move... I think it was just the switch from force to force that threw me a little.

Umm... any animated renders???

10-10-2007, 11:12 AM
Hey Martin, how is the interaction in the viewport with that model/rig ? do you have some sort of really low res model (like detached polys) or something ? How did you handle those beautiful deformations ?

It's a fantastic work! The animation is top notch and the design is awesome!

10-11-2007, 12:01 AM
@gpepper - thx man... I need to finish soon so I have enough time for comping and sound edit.

@DaddyMack - yeh, I wanted to play around with it and have the ship sortof move him around, I wish I had rigged the whole body for some cool stretch, but I guess no time for R&D.

No animated renders yet, currently I'm rendering shot1 while I work on the others, which is taking forever! 20minutes a frame ;((

@liquidik - the fps in the view port is quite slow, maybe 1.5 fps. I run a capture in XSI (Maya playblast) to look at it in real time. I'm animating at 25fps, maybe should have done it at 24.. oh well ;p
I'm not using a lowres mesh, creating poses is a decent enough viewport update, to see it run realtime I just to a quick capture.
Facial deformations are a combination of blendshapes and bones. I have a "mouth" bone that makes the whole mouth shift around, and I have a jaw bone as a child of that bone to make the mouth open close.

10-11-2007, 02:53 AM
That animation is insanely good, top quality. sigh... haha. well done. the details are wow, did you hand animate the head bob and everything?? haha nice

10-11-2007, 07:06 PM
2o minutes/ frame is crunchy V! I hope you are lucky like me and have 2 pcs so that the monster can munch renders while you click away on the workhorse... If not the BOXX will slot in nicely;)

You could create a render seq of your BG yeah (because of all the mame vids) and reuse parts of it in shots where the cam is still... allowing you to only render your foreground for some shots hopefully saving you some time...

May the force be with you

10-11-2007, 09:46 PM
Fantastic work,... very detailed, cunnig and balanced animation... errorless!

10-11-2007, 10:15 PM
loving it. great character design. i can't wait to see a final render. good expression and personality in this guy. really nice.

10-11-2007, 11:07 PM
Very impressive stuff! Great design and animation. This can't be your first animation :-)
Good luck!

10-12-2007, 05:43 AM
for some reason I cudnt see the animation, it wasnt downloading... but this morning i get to see it finally... it looks really good. Although I could suggest one little thing. After he presses the button for the first time. U might think of giving a hold of couple of more fremes there to make his furstration read better. I know the time is an issue here... but hope that helps.

doing a gr8 job here... keep it up.

10-12-2007, 04:43 PM

nice movements in your animation.

10-13-2007, 10:06 PM
Hey Martin, That looks nice... but one thing didnt look okay in my eyes. The time when the Astro guy slaps the steering wheel, the timing looks very fast, mayb putting some more inbetweens might help. Will be waiting to see this finish.... all the best

10-14-2007, 01:21 AM
haha what can you say. Love it. I like the timing. See you on the next Pixar project ;) What sort of experience have you had?

i think too. your work itīs one of he best...
simply when i was on class i used internet to see examples of people...
some works are increible and help me to explain and motivate my students... ( course of 3dmax).
and belive me this work are fantastic. high level... congratulations.!!
where put the 3dboxx???...

in my case admire a lot to these people who make these work!!.
some time ago. i work on arquitecture for some companies. (need money for my family... have twins cost a lot of money). My work on training center itīs only for some months and need produce, produce and produce buildings.... (class: 9:00 to 14:00 (autocad/3dsmax/photoshop/bla bla bla.....) - play with childrens..... client projects 23:00 to 5:00, 6:00, 8:00 ..... aaaaarg!!)
i havenīt time for investige on characters anim because this donīt give me work.... I HOPE CAN ANIMATE IGUAL YOU IN A FUTURE... BELIVE ME... SIMPLY ARE INSPIRATION!!.

i now i will finish.... because i can cry......

pd: my english are the same level of my character animation hahahahaha

10-17-2007, 01:52 PM
Hey Martin, that's a great animation, your model is superb. Keep going, I'm looking forward
for your progress and the final animation impatiently. Cheers!

I WANT THE MOVIE!!! i mean a TRUE MOVIE!!! he hehe this character is great! There are great potential in it!!! aahhh.....you genius! I love this guy!!! is perfect for a TV serie!!!

10-20-2007, 09:56 AM

thx for the feedback, much appreciated. It's heading towards the final stretch. I've completed all the animation that needs to be done, now setting up the remaining shots for lighting and rendering. I'll post up the lost shots that I've done.

Trying to render out with motion blur, but it's taking 4+hours per frame, opposed to 4minutes a frame without it. Will have to find another way to do it in xsi...

@r1-381 - hehe thx, I hope it gets a few smiles

@overcontrast - the bit with the big final slap? or the one with the little ones? ye, there's no inbetweens, I've tweaked it a bit to adjust the timing on the last few ones so it doesn't look too even, but otherwise.. time is my enemy ;(

@Trickz - heya, thx for the comments. I've had just over a year in character animation working on kids short films here in SA. Not alot of experience, so I'm still new and still alot to learn.

@ragdoll - thx man ;p

@gpepper - well, I wouldn't count my chickens before they hatch.. haha.. bad joke, but that one's just for u. Atm I'm looking at it for portfolio and job opportunities

@aghill - there's plently space in this universe for more ;p

@Arrrgh4life - bluesteel! haha

@infoarq - thx for the comments, its very motivating

@ashiataka - it's getting thr, wish renders didn't take so long

@melkao - there will probably be a downloadable version, I just have to find space. The guidelines in this challenge is 640x480, so I'll letterbox it.. but I'll make a high res version that's 16:9

@DaddyMack - cool.. I'll update shortly

@OZ ... hmm, that's an idea... he needs a sidekick.. hhehe.. if I had time I wanted to actually have him sitting with a stuffed bunny, but looking at the animation.. I'd say that's difficult to have fitted in 2 characters in that small ship.

here's shot 4 & 5... all animation done now.. yay!

I originally had the kid with the helmet and pointing his gun, then at the end he woulda shot the astronaut with the suction bullet sticking to his head.. but it didn't make sense at the end. I wanted to emphasize the Strange Behaviour.. so the kid looking at the astronaut in disapproval works out better..

hmm, now without the helmet.. I didn't intend to show his bald head.. lol, have to work out some sort of hairstyle ;p

cool... let me know what u guys think

We Have A Winer!!

10-20-2007, 06:53 PM
Beautifully underplayed Martin, these shots really contrast your 2 and 3 with movement style and mood... I'm not sure why but I didn't find the boys anim as convincing as the rest.

I'll try some 4:30am analysis though... The shot could be just a little longer to give the boy long enough to get his message across clearly. He breaks the action so I think it is important... There doesn't appear to be any reason for him to move his foot (unless he was going to take a step backward like 'ooookkaaayyyyy'....)... possibly it would be stronger to keep him still and have him hold a look of disapproval or confusion longer before shaking his head at him.. The last shot of our hero squirming and then looking at us is beautiful...

When I grow up I wanna be just like you;)

Good luck V!

As I remember I told you few times in past challenges how fine work you're doin. Martin, have to repeat myself again. It's awesome! You push high quality from all aspects. Good to keep an eye here :) Keep it up! Concentrate for these last days! The huge creative part is already done, just put the pieces together. You know better than me how it's working. Am just impressed by every cool update from you. Thanks for the insiration! :bounce:

Well Done

10-24-2007, 03:26 PM
Hey martin....i love the glow ligths in the back. they looks very nice....but i thjinks the best part is the animation and de integration between the character and the ship...for me, thats a very hard thing to do...but you did it my friend, nice job:thumbsup:

10-26-2007, 09:20 PM
Keep it up my friend, just as in previous challenges! Your work is one of the bests! No doubt. You just have to focus on tasks. Sounds easy I know, but a huge part of the community thinks the same if I can say...! I love this scene!

Wishya all the strength :thumbnail:

10-26-2007, 10:39 PM
Hi Martin...

CONGRATULATIONS are increibles.... belive me.

10-26-2007, 11:49 PM
@Goro - thx alot man... ye all on my own, getting some help on the sound tho, but so far I'm it's WIP. This project is hectic.. turned out way more complex than I originally planned. eeek.

@DaddyMack - w00t ;p

@infoarq - lol, slideshows.. oh yeah.. where's the coin slot.. just kidding.

10-27-2007, 12:04 AM
Hey, sorry there's some confusion. I wrote "sounds easy" but i didn't mean: sound is easy. Definitely not! Sorry, it was something like "easy to say" meaning of the sentence. Nothing is easy in this challenge. I have my own fight right now too. Apologize about my bad english, again

10-27-2007, 06:39 AM
Amazing again ! You do it very well ! I just hope you can finish in time ! Are the renders in the good way to be finished ?

10-27-2007, 04:04 PM
looking awesome man... all the best with the last few hours!:buttrock:

10-28-2007, 02:43 AM

Good luck to you to finish it all!. I'm glad to know you, from now on I'll look for your new projects! Cheers!

10-28-2007, 08:40 AM
Don't you hate render problems. I've had crash after crash. But don't think you even need to finish it mate, it's fantastic. Do you already work at Pixar or what? ;)

@Tremoside - yeah, we're all struggling to finish.. goodluck for the final few hours, I'm sure u'll make it!

@gpepper - I don't think so, some shots I need to re-render coz of problems, I'll have to do that after the challenge... for now it's "ok".. I'll just have to submit what I have

@overcontrast - yeah man.. u too! final stretch!

@ashiataka - thx dude... love ur characters also, they're awesome! goodluck.

@Trickz - no I wish.. that's a goal.. currently studying at Animation Mentor, but it's only been my first month, so I have a long way to go ;p

10-29-2007, 03:48 AM
Oh hows it going at Animation Mentor? Good course? Only your first month? Lots of natural talent ;) You'll be at one of the big studios before long mate. The small expressions are priceless.

10-29-2007, 08:20 AM
17 left ! You can finish this great !

10-30-2007, 03:50 AM
u have one hell of an awesome entry here!!!
can't w8 to see the final comp! congrats in advance!!!

11-01-2007, 06:51 AM
Kick back, relax, and ride this baby home mate... I genuinely look forward to final Martin

Also, thanks for the pointers:buttrock:

11-01-2007, 10:43 AM
Renders look very good. Astronaut animation also is very good. The only thing that I would tweak at this point is the way the little boy shifts weight but apart from that it is all perfect. How long does it take to render single frame??

11-09-2007, 10:28 PM
hey guys

thanks for the support, it's been really busy for me the last 2 weeks, so hopefully I can get this thing done this weekend. So far I've just been fixing some renders, nothing major.

I wish I could have modelled some more characters in the additional time, but I've just been stretched thin lately.. hehe

cool, back on track soon ;p

11-11-2007, 06:36 PM
... 'Dad, has that buzz lightyear guy on the little spaceship put his animation up yet?'... My kids are waiting V!, they reckon you've got this in the bag too... 1 day left Martin, hope you're happy with the extra polish you've put on your piece... Good luck mate:bounce:

Nice. You did a good job. Renders look very good. I like facial animation. The only thing that might be missing is the sound effects. Animation seems a bit quiet. Apart from that I think it is very interesting entry. I like the general idea behind it. Although it does not tell a story it is a good example of strange behaviour. The thing is that animation does not have to tell a story because it is animation, not a short film. :)
Well done and Good luck.

11-15-2007, 02:43 AM
what can i say...awesome in every aspect!
u have a very strong chance of bringing the gold in the bag:thumbsup:!
congrats in advance!!!

11-15-2007, 07:10 AM
Thanks to everyone for their support! Goodluck to all, u guys have been great...

Thanks to you Martin !

You pushed the standard very high ! Your entry is amazing ! You reach a high level of animation, modeling and render !
I'm sure the winner is here !
Congratulation my friend you did it well !

11-15-2007, 08:28 AM

Came out really well, good luck now!
Smells like a winner ...

11-15-2007, 12:29 PM
Congratulations Martin on an amazing finish!... i really liked the animaion... got a lot of energy in it... and the concept is very funny.... I wish ya all the best!

11-15-2007, 12:43 PM
This was a winner from the first sketch!
Amazing work, makes me smile every time, and Ive been watching it since you posted the last one.

Top notch bro.

11-15-2007, 01:28 PM
no doubt here , we got a winner

this is sooooo damn nice.. i'm jealous :D!! the only weak point as already mentioned, is the missing sound or voice..

but nevertheless, artistically & technically great, very high ladder you've build there..

i think my first rung is broken? ;)

11-15-2007, 02:36 PM
is so damn cool!...amazing job...you kick us all. hey can i get a copy of your animation to collect it?:scream:

11-15-2007, 06:30 PM
Well colour me fanboy!..

You must be so proud of how far you've come over the years Martin, it's been a pleasure to chase you while watching your work evolve... This is by far one of the best technical+ aesthetic pieces I've seen in a challenge to date. Congratulations mate:buttrock:If anyone was taking bets on the top 2 here my money would be on you and Z! for sure... Must've felt good to finally let go of this, you pushed it beyond beyond... Good luck with the judging.

11-15-2007, 07:01 PM
When I see the first images of your thread. I don't write nothing to you. I was intimidated. I thought and now I am sure that you have worked (or works) in a big studio. I cannot say nothing about your animation. It will be obvious. Is like to say the coal is black. All the people know that. I know a girl that has worked as model. She is very beatiful. And she doesn't like that people say that she was pretty. She knows it and all the people know that. For that reason I can say nothing. The best thing in that cases is to to ignore that peculiarity and speak about other things. Good job.

11-15-2007, 07:01 PM
I have send the post two times. This is not he first time that I have done this mistake.

11-15-2007, 08:09 PM
Totally top notch mate, can't fault it :) Congrats, I wanna be like you ;) Great to have it done huh? Don't want to look at a computer screen for a few days... well one or two..

@pierzak - thanks, I agree on the sound, unfortunately I can't do it all and sound I'm definately not great at. I think animation should tell a story, even a basic one. This isn't a short film by any means, but I think it sets the premise of strange behavior. Thanks for stopping by.

@chocoski - thanks man, glad it's done.. now I can chill for about an hour, then back to do more work on other things ;p

@gpepper - thanks man, ur entry is great to! ur Renders are looking awesome!

@infoarq - arcades... good memories ;p

@aghill - thx

@coolkonrad - I smell blood and tears ;p

@overcontrast - hehe.. thx man.. looking fwd to ur final!!!

@Ranimate - I would have loved to do the original concept to finish, but couldn't manage the amount of shots.. Hopefully I can revisit it, thx for stopping by

@syrez-one - thx... I did have the voice sound for the part where he's shouting.. but it sounded terrible.. well, it's my voice, and my voice for shot3 too.. so I guess that's the problem.. lol, so I took it out. better missing than bad ;p

@melkao - I need some webspace ;(((

@DaddyMack - awesome man, glad u enjoy.

@fruela - thanks alot for the kind comments. Hope I don't come off as intimidating to others ;(

@Trickz - thanks.. goodluck to u 2! I'm tired of looking at this project now, I'm sure alot of guys here feel the same about their stuff ;p

11-16-2007, 09:12 AM
Congrats MArtin. You'll be at the top.

Ps : I love the lighting of the 1st scene

11-16-2007, 09:23 AM
Itīs hard to catch the first feel from this coz we already know whatīs the story but I can say your skills are great! I see you are at AM classes what is just a little step for you coz you already are animator! Judges are unpredictable to me but I say this has quality of the TOP. Good luck anyway

11-16-2007, 10:55 AM
Excellent! Animation is very cool! Nice shaders and mood. :applause: Another great piece from you Martin! Congratulations!

11-16-2007, 12:00 PM
:applause: I love it ! It's awesome !
The animation is great !

11-16-2007, 10:07 PM
Great animation Martin, good timing...
I like the expressions, very funny...

11-17-2007, 06:12 AM
The animation is great ! The concept is very funny... Congratulations!
Good job and good luck

11-17-2007, 02:52 PM
turned out good. nice attention to detail on his facial expressions. looks like you used some SSS for his skin, too. i love that stuff. i noticed you tweaked the cuts a bit by adding a white flash. that was a good move.
i think the sound feels just a bit incomplete. seems like the spacehip and the spaceman should have been making a lot more noise.
all-in-all it is a nice entry with some good character animation.
good work!

11-18-2007, 11:39 PM
This is amazing, and really inspiring! I'm currently working on a "spaceman", and now I know what direction to go! There is so much personality in you character, great animation! You really deserve to win!
All best, Roger.

11-19-2007, 01:33 AM
I am so glad you had the chance to finish this one! I kept coming back to the Animation forum to see if there were any noew updates and there never were, and I was getting worried that you wouldn't finish it off.I'm glad you did. This has come out just splendidly - First-lcass character design and animation! Really great job, so congratulations!

11-19-2007, 11:22 AM
Hey Martin! Congratulations! That's great to see the finished. With a great concept, well done designs and modelings, textures and stunning animation, this piece is the one for watching over and over again. It was nice to know you and I'm looking for your new animations! Hope you'll be awarded! Best of luck! Cheers!

11-19-2007, 12:10 PM
Totally brilliant - the expressions of the of the space pilot make this the best I have seen for a while. So much 3d work is characterised by 'looking like 3d' - you have managed to go beyond the medium to create something very memorable. Best of luck on what should be a sure winner!

11-19-2007, 12:15 PM
It has been very interesting to see the animation entries for this competition, but it has also left me somewhat baffled to see what entries have become most popular with the forum users. I know nothing is decided yet, but I can not help having to say this.

In regards to your work. It is very nice and a smooth production, but largely unoriginal. The animation has its good points and is conducted with a certain level of craftsmanship for sure, but the story is quaint, not at all representing strange behavior IMHO. The character looks like Buzz Lightyears brother, which is more of a let down than impressive, especially when you consider the style universe given here compared to other already existing ones.

If CGTalk.com decides to honour this entry with a top position in the competition, I think it speaks of an unwillingness or incapacity to understand and support true creativity, vision and progressive thinking in 3D production. Taste is a personal matter, but craft alone, does not merit rewards in this instance as far as I am concerned. It is supposed to be strange behaviour, and hopefully 3D and 2D as art forms being the foundation conveying it. This above entry has a fundamental problem in the art department, since there is very little originality to find. For me, this is one stop short of imitation or at least a facsimile of something we have seen done so much better, so many times before.

I think you could do wonders if you put your mind and especially imagination to it.

I have been evaluating my own entry over the past week with fresh and a very critical eye, something I think that is really lacking in these challenges is constructive critism.

I do agree that the entry is not the most original concept, given the time I had I reconsidered my earlier idea(s) and chose a much simpler one. If this was in flaw it's something that I take with me and learn and move forward from there. It never really had a story to begin with, I originally started out with a basic idea that had 2 shots, to show a supposed Astronaut in an arcade going crazy. Yes, strange behavior is very subjective but I think that's pretty strange to me. So, in terms of planning - ideas and "story" just evolved, but I never set out for this to be a short film in the first place, and I still do not refer to it as such, it's just an animation to suite the requirements.

As for the character design, I never set out intending a carbon copy Buzz. I wanted to create a typcial stereotypical "hero" type character. Inadvertantly, i think it reminds ppl of Buzz anyway because of the cliche'ness. If I ask u to draw a stereotyped figure it's large jaw, broad shoulders/chest, muscles etc. I think Buzz is such an ICONIC/cliche figure and alot of ppl will instantly relate to that character. In the end I tried to make the character my own, with his emotions, and his personality with a bit of an inner child.

this is my first animation challenge, I never expected to hit it out of the park first time round. It's a stepping stone for me definately, but I take away lessons learned from this project from failures and flaws in the development, and bring it to the next project.

11-19-2007, 11:21 PM
Aww this is cute! I love the lighting, colors and the characters are well done, Congratulations!

11-20-2007, 01:28 AM
An interesting comment Naked, and an eloquent reply Martin. It is certainly nice to have objective critiques. Having been involved in the competition for the first time also, it really was a case of picking a concept quickly and flying with it. With a short production time frame and a limit of 2 minutes for the piece, there is only so much you can achieve. I spent so much time on the concept, the technical quality of my piece suffered so there is a balance to be found ... or sacrifices to be made ;) Your comment about evaluating your piece with fresh eyes is so true Martin, it's easier to critique once out of the woods. I think you should be very proud, there is no denying the amazing skill in your work, the execution, animation and rendering is absolutely top notch. I would be over the moon if mine had the same class. I'm sure you will be rewarded for it :)

11-20-2007, 06:49 PM
I've been following your work since the very first concept. The animation turned out very well. No! That's an understatement, the animation is absolutely brilliant.
The only thing I don't really like is the boy's hair. Oh well, who am I to judge .. I'm 16 years old and new to 3D. I really look up to you. I definitely want to do somthing with animation after my studies, got any tips for an animator-to-be? xD

Aaanyway, I hope you win. You're my favorite (:
