01 January 2002, 04:47 PM
Yeah, I love the hair. How did you do it?

01 January 2002, 07:17 PM
Dammit man, really good!!
how u did the hair?:D :D :D
just one question, you make the ear like the center of the head? just like the poles os a sphere?

01 January 2002, 07:48 PM
How cool is that hair ! i wish lw had something like shag (i assume its shag turned to polys ?) cool so far !

01 January 2002, 08:20 PM

01 January 2002, 12:32 AM
yup I used shag hair, thx for the tip froggie.. you never know...:D fixed now....
prisonner: you guessed right.. but usually I start with the poles on top, it`s hard to manage them from the side.

Matt: you`re dead :D

01 January 2002, 07:25 AM
really cool design man, the hair rock

but hmmmm, use only the eyes on top or bottom, eh this is my opinion

and the tissue is great like it

01 January 2002, 09:51 AM
Very nice.... the hair rocks.... and the 4 eyes.... great work. X)

Who can make a shag:hair/:fur tutorial?? matt... pascal??? :D

wait for my pirate u both.... j0j0j0.... :p

01 January 2002, 05:52 AM

01 January 2002, 11:37 AM
I love the hair... almost a a alien "bob marley" pirate
I want to see the body ! arg ! :)

this is usual... become very boring mr Blanché :p

01 January 2002, 12:27 PM
tiens ....un golgoth !!Bonne année mon gars ;)

01 January 2002, 12:36 PM
splendiferious my friend. I'm awaiting the appearance of his artificial appendage. That ought to be good. :D

01 January 2002, 10:44 PM
Somehow, this is exactly Pascal's style... the structure and feel of the character resebles 'the Pascal character'... or is it just me?

01 January 2002, 03:32 PM
little update ;)

01 January 2002, 03:38 PM
love that bandana and hair! :)
ill comment more when you get further on with him :)

01 January 2002, 04:19 PM
HA HA i knew i could get you to do another great model if you did this competition ! this is turning out to be a one of your coolest characters ! looking forward to more

01 January 2002, 04:20 PM
looks very cool indeed... Can we have pix for other views? =)

01 January 2002, 06:10 PM
Looks great!

I'm curious, are his pants and torso one mesh? Or seperate objects next to eachother?

01 January 2002, 06:13 PM
they where two different objects, made separatly ( like the arms, hands..) then I used the connect tool to join evrything.. maybe I will disconnect the pants later, but it helps a lot to fit with the body ( connect tool create nice jonctions)

Man.. i really hate this prostesic arm :( gonna have to work on another design, this one will not go really further...

01 January 2002, 09:29 PM
some competition to matt's work, at last...=)

01 January 2002, 01:15 AM
Ouch! That hurts...

What else can I say? Excellent model already - Hail to the King!

P.S.: He looks a little bit with Jack Palance... :)

01 January 2002, 07:32 AM
Pascal, mate, that's looking excellent. The cybernetic prosthese looks fabulous. Tho won't his pants fall down like this
I mean, no belt, and it's rest just below his hips . .. .
Give hime a belt with a piraty gunholder :D
What shader are you using anyway, your pieces always look like they have some kind of special shading . . . care to share it :D
looks like a standard material with no specs and glossy, tho it has something else i can't lay my finger on.

In short, It's looking great so far . . .

01 January 2002, 10:51 AM
the belt is on its way ;) and new prostesic arm too, and guns, and.. well .. lots of stuff :D thx for the comments guys:D

01 January 2002, 04:02 PM
Ahhh, now that's a ting o' beauty. :D  :D

I'm almost tempted to jump in this comp myself.... so little time, so much that must be done. *sigh*

Keep the inspiring works coming!

01 January 2002, 05:08 PM
Cool challenge....some awesome work so far!!
BTW. what modeler are you using pascal?? Lightwave?

I will love to take part in the next challenge

01 January 2002, 07:47 PM
Good work dude... but the 4 eyes apear too little to me...

01 January 2002, 07:59 PM
One minor quibble - the sharp edge between his upper and lower eyes could do with softening out.

01 January 2002, 10:25 PM
totally cool character Pascal!
where did you get the idea for the character?
Maybe the arm design needs more time huh?.

01 January 2002, 12:38 AM

k equinoxx already answered this question by private message, but i'll share with others ('cause it's one of the purposes of this challenge)
so here is my receipt:
I like to make shadows little more transparent (0.8) and play a bit with Global Lighting: burning up a bit the scene by changing the tint and level (1.2) and turning the Ambient to something else than a reel black (like dark red or dark blue it depends )
then I use mainly one spot (target directionnal light mainly) and push the contrast to 30 and multiplier to 1.1 and then..
I play a bit with fallofs in my maps ... does it repond to your question? the main thing is to remove these boring black shadows and flatten a bit volumes

uptdate coming up soon

01 January 2002, 03:38 PM

01 January 2002, 03:50 PM
I'm in awe ;)

01 January 2002, 03:54 PM
I hate this guy ! ;)

01 January 2002, 03:55 PM
Beautiufl! :)

I would really like to see the cage of the upper torso. Plus. are you just using meshsmooth? Or are you using tesselate also?

01 January 2002, 03:58 PM
Poor. Very poor. Have you considered another vocation?
Perhaps gardening?

LOL!! looks like Matty boy has a strong competitor ;) heheh

01 January 2002, 04:12 PM
It's psychological. If I tell him it's rubbish enough he'll start to believe it, then he'll start again. :D

Now, where did my thread go.....? I've been slacking!

01 January 2002, 04:17 PM

01 January 2002, 04:19 PM

Pascal You are the reson this contest needs tiers!! Increadibly detailed, yet very elagent, I really cannot find anything wrong . . . damn ;) BTW how much time did that mech thing take ?

See you,

01 January 2002, 10:00 PM
Ahhhhh that's a great question.... How much time do you have in this guy (everything up until now)?

01 January 2002, 10:16 PM
By the way, have I told you guys how cool this challenge idea is. Even though I haven't had much time to work on my own character (School is kickin my arse :) ) I've already learned sooooooo much from all this.

01 January 2002, 10:47 AM

Well, not a long time for the torso as I'm still using the same old mesh i'm using for each male character I did a few year ago(
you can see picts of the progression in this interview ( ) I adjusted a few things on it... the biggest part was the arm for now... I work each day one hour (lunch time:D ) so let's say around 12 hours of work...

Deepray: I'll work on some protective tools glasses like for this character.. wanted to do that badly: 4 eyes glasses :D

01 January 2002, 08:44 PM
Yeah, 4 eyes glasses rulez!!
do it, with little round lenses!!:D

01 January 2002, 10:02 PM

I feel ashamed for the late reply, but I couldn't see the images at first :(
But you know what you say . . . all good things come to those who wait and boy, did something good came :D

pure brilliance :D

01 January 2002, 02:40 AM
I love this one very much, yu got my vote m8.
It has a cool look about it.

01 January 2002, 05:35 AM
Pascal pascal pascal.... what are we going to do with you ?
And you think you have any chance in the 3D world ? Let's be frank with you it's not because you show interest while working at lunch time that you're going to succeed in this field !
Anyway we should have a word with your parents, tell them to lead you somewhere else, where you might make a living out of it, it's only for you own good you know.
Come one drop 3ds max, the only thing it does to you is harm your eyesight !

;) :p

01 January 2002, 02:26 AM
Great work Pascal (as usual) and thanks for the little tips you give us every once in a while. It not only helps me but I'm sure others advance with in this wonderful craft. Your work is always a insperation to excel.

01 January 2002, 05:56 AM

So Pascal, what will you come up with next? We are all watching.

01 January 2002, 07:25 PM
Wait and see :p I just want to finish my character first.. and maybe animate something hehehehe

01 January 2002, 07:33 PM
ahahahaha, thats priceless. You two should build an arena. Do a little boxing animation when this is all done :D

maybe thats the next challenge. Who will be the last pirate standing!

I cant believe Matt took the time to recreate the head of pascals character. Diabolical!

01 January 2002, 10:21 PM

01 January 2002, 07:34 PM
new udpdate, he needs some extra items now...

01 January 2002, 07:40 PM
Sweet ! How did you do the cloth ? Simcloth ? I like the hand, it reminds me a bit your crash-test dummie (Wolverine theme if I'm not wrong).

Where is the belt ? ;)

01 January 2002, 08:13 PM
pascal......... y o u k i c k a s s!

01 January 2002, 08:40 PM
The whole left arm just kills me. I love that thing :) All the pivioting mechanisims in the elbow and the entire hand is just.... well...... BAD ASS!!!

Still cant get over the hair too.

Nice job Pascal

01 January 2002, 08:56 PM
all the models are awesome , thanks for being inspiration guys , i cant wait until the next challange.

i wonder whose pirate will kill the others

01 January 2002, 12:12 AM
If I had to put a vote forth, id probably sign out of here. the problem is... there too gooooood!!!!
And for the special section on the character boxing, yeah, good idea.

01 January 2002, 12:15 AM
YeahI did too on my 2D drawing... but what the hell...

01 January 2002, 06:46 AM
feck you . . . Marry me :D
tho Y-guy is right, he lacks a tail. so you better make him a semi-prostetic tail, the kind where the tail needs to be supported by techstuff, cause it's SOO dang heavy :D

excellentpiece mate.

Krep Suzeth
01 January 2002, 07:04 AM
Hi pascal !

Nice model ! I really like the shoes and the arm ! Nice.

And thx !!! :D

01 January 2002, 07:31 AM
NICE SHOES ! I ESPECIALY ADMIRE them becuase for some reason i have an easier time with a head than with a pair of shoes my biggest weakness ! good job !

01 January 2002, 09:22 AM
Are the holes that you put in the tech hand straight booleens? Sorry if its a stupid question I've never used 3d/s max.

01 January 2002, 09:38 AM
This model is rock solid.

01 January 2002, 09:40 AM
what can I say?

Guess it's not enough...

As usual, your new character is one of the coolest I've ever seen...Proportions, soft looking shading, modelling...CONCEPT!

I can't wait to see it in final version...

01 January 2002, 01:20 PM
wow amazing work pascal as usual :) I love that design and the hair kicks major ass! That mechanical glove looks extemely difficult to model and time consuming, you the man.

01 January 2002, 01:38 PM

no it's just hollow parts in the mesh.. I try to avoid booleans as much as possible as they mess up your mesh
if you remove a quad or triangle from a mesh and then add meshsmooth on it, it will look better ;)

gotta work on some lionlike tail or something.. i think.. and on a big belt too.. and err ...more details....

01 January 2002, 04:02 PM
Jesus. You have made a truly exceptional model there, Pascal. My hats off to ya. :) I'd love to see this guy animated. Give him a bigass cutlass to sling over his shoulder.

01 January 2002, 04:22 PM
Pascal that is sweet. Yet again you have an amazing piece to show. Are you running the render through arnold?

01 January 2002, 06:12 PM
actually I'm in love with Vray don't tell that to my wife :D :D

01 January 2002, 12:54 AM
I'll hang onto my tail, thank you very much! Don't worry we won't tell your wife about Vray.;)

01 January 2002, 01:15 AM
*sigh* pretty. ;)

01 January 2002, 02:27 PM
very nice ,great great, Good JoB, i like hair, color skin and cloth ,,, ALL ,,, very good

The dwarf
01 January 2002, 03:46 PM
excellent work,no comment:eek:

01 January 2002, 04:38 PM
adding details :p ok next step... i'll add some weapons!!

01 January 2002, 04:54 PM
Very nice details pascal. Is that a transparent section on the arm!? That belt is w!cked, bah! the whole thing is wicked!.

questions: whats your cpu speed? whats the ratio of polys to nurbs? just curious.

01 January 2002, 05:05 PM
very impressive. He just keeps getting cooler and cooler. do you sketch this stuff out on paper first, or do you just dive in with an idea?

01 January 2002, 05:06 PM
the character is not that big ni polygons ( ill post a wire) I just added a meshmooth level one)

Just had this character in mind, improvisation... I thought first about the man proportions.. and added hairs to balance the proportions..

01 January 2002, 05:28 PM
Thats great! I love it

01 January 2002, 05:39 PM
looks awesome Pascal ;) Nice detailing you got going there..

01 January 2002, 05:40 PM
Damn Pascal u rock man! Really really good job! Lot of details . I love it :D :D !! (Tu a encore reussi a m'impressionner mon cher Pascal! :) )

01 January 2002, 07:55 PM
gotta see some more details of this character with the belt and all the other extras. Great work! I hope one day i'm that good.

Krep Suzeth
01 January 2002, 10:26 AM
Argh !!!!!!!!

Details, details, details .... !!!!!

Very "superbe" !! :D

Huhu ! Bon je me fais pizzaiolo !

01 January 2002, 11:18 AM
"and the winning of the Pascal challenge is Pascal?"

I'm calling for an official enquiry... ;)

01 January 2002, 11:40 AM
If that's how things work, let's call the next challenge

the equinoxx challenge :D:D:D:D:D:D

btw, excellent details my friend. still waiting for that tech-supported tail tho ;)

01 January 2002, 09:24 PM
how the f*** can you model that great with poly modeling ????im impress!
did u start with a box or you create polygons one by one???
really want to see a wireframe!

01 January 2002, 10:10 PM
Polygon modelling has come along way in Max, and I think its very useful now (more than NURBS at least) I dont know about Pascal, but I prefer to start with a box, and just extrude, and edit at the Meshsmooth level, untill I get a nice detailed result. Just know your polyz!

01 January 2002, 11:10 PM
I usualy start from capsules instead of boxes ( so it is capsule modelling I guess :D :D )
for box modelling THE reference is mr Bay Raitt (
read carefully his tuttorials...

and the new growing reference is our friend Martin K ( ( i'm not kidding ;) )

01 January 2002, 11:29 PM

01 January 2002, 06:55 AM
Awesome.... i don't think any other comments are needed.

The detail is superb, I would love to see him animated.

I have a list of questions:- are you using a cloth plugin. when you rig him for animation what are you going to use (biped or bones) have you any thoughts on how you will rig the hair for movement.

once more.... excellent model. excellent

01 January 2002, 12:08 PM
yup i'm using simcloth (free) to creates my clothes , snapshot them andI refine the modelling in edit mesh.. I'll rig the all thing with physique , if I would go to some animation, I could eventually use some morph tricks to create an impression of dynamic clothes.. as for the hairs, they can be dynamic(shag hiar) .. I use the simcloth simulation to make the move.. (option available in shag hair)

01 January 2002, 01:07 PM
Man, great work.

But, this alien is look like my grandmother ...

Heuhehuauhehueuhe it's joke.

01 January 2002, 02:17 PM
euuuhhhh ben ca claque....:D IMPRESSIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVEEE

I think you should made more details on his trouser don't you ??

for example on the level of the hips....

great work one more time..........................

Luiz Felippe VZ
01 January 2002, 04:35 PM
Man! Your work is perfect!

How do you achieve such a degree of subtleties in the details? That's fantastic! I love the way you add subtle details to your models, without polluting the scene... It seems like a paradox :D , no matter how much detail you add, the whole scene always looks clean! I'm really impressed with your work!

Congratulations once more!

best regards,

01 January 2002, 07:24 PM

This could be the worst model I've ever seen in my life.

It's not chrome, nor does it involve a teapot and where's the lensflare in your renders!?!?!? At least you got the checkerboard pattern in there.

:p :p :p :p :p

(Pascal - I will be hunting you and Mr Clarke down like the talented Max dogs that you are... Time for the weak to strike back!)

01 January 2002, 07:55 PM
lol AJ

lets get'em :p

01 January 2002, 08:00 PM
come and get some ...
huhuh excellent guys that's the spirit! really motivating isn't it?

01 January 2002, 09:30 PM
Pascal do you ever model in any other package other than MAX?

BTW. awesome model....i love the detail

01 January 2002, 11:40 PM
new post.... how 'bout some sunglasses???
(touched up a bit the face again too.. )

01 January 2002, 12:17 AM
Hehe... well what can I say Pascal... love your work. The addition of sunglasses really gives the character personality. There are some minor issues with the bandana but I guess that's just tweaking. :) And also, the lower part of the glasses seem a bit "free floating". How about dividing the head strap and moving it a bit further down on the head? Make it fit more snuggly around him.... well that's just my oppinion. Great work though. Something I can yet only aspire too.
Keep it up. :D

01 January 2002, 12:19 AM
wicked specs!

01 January 2002, 12:28 AM
As usual very nice and detailed design. How do you create all the little details (the connection of the strap to itself after it loops round the metal and all those little dipple kind of things, (on the of the glasses, and the shoulders of the coat) Nevermind the modeling, but just the ideas, oh well, perhaps in a fews years I'll have it all figured out, . . . or maybe not ;) Anyway, aside from perhaps a hinge between the lenses, the only crit is the actual color of the glasses, they just ought to be transparent (yeah I got nothing noth'n) Have you tried to rig him yet ?

Cannotwait to see more,
sulking off,

01 January 2002, 12:43 AM
rigging is the next step... after having fix theses details notum mentionned (gap between eyes and glasses) fx for the crits guys, it helps!

01 January 2002, 03:22 AM
ooops just crashed or something.. that`s why my picts doesnt show ( it seems that i`m not the only one.) I love computers

Jean Eric
01 January 2002, 03:30 AM
Are these Raybans? Where can I buy them?

01 January 2002, 03:41 AM
heheh finally it came up!! Jean eric as 4 eyes!!! that's why he is always getting hot news before any one else :D :D :D

Krep Suzeth
01 January 2002, 07:51 PM
Ok ! The glasses ! I got it ! It's a swimming champ !
Crawl ? Breast-stroke ?
I really love your lighting !

Remember that you have to sleep at night my friend ! ;)

Jean Eric
01 January 2002, 07:52 PM
Sleep? Right, all he has to do is close his two eyes but keep the other two openned at night... Convenient...

01 January 2002, 01:05 AM
I was wondering... Has anyone here actually seen Pascal in real life? I've never been to Canada nor met P.B., but could'nt this be some kind of, dare I say it... self portrait???

How I could think of such a thing? Well, since Pascal are so out of this world with MAX, it just hit me that it could be thanks to his --- four eyes!!!

What do you say guys, am I on to something here? Besides making Pascal wanna cancel my membership here...! :p

lol Pascal - you rule, as always

01 January 2002, 11:25 AM
One eye for every viewport. Very handy.

01 January 2002, 02:58 PM
Can't wait to see the updated specs. What is it with the goggle movement? I blame Martin for that one....then again, now I don't have to model eyes....I've been set free whooo-hoooo! :D :D :D

01 January 2002, 11:43 PM
man i really have to go out of quebec and nuke my own country!!! too much competition here!!!
(or start a cg compagny ,... but thats a too-easy alternative)

ps: vous pourriez pas aller travailler au states pour que jpuisse me trouver une job dans 5 ans?

Jean Eric
01 January 2002, 11:50 PM
I'm supposed to have dinner with Pascal later this month. I'll be able to tell you all about it... :-)

01 January 2002, 05:07 AM
Do you have a date Jean Eric ? I thought Pascal was married .... :D :D :D

Jean Eric
01 January 2002, 05:08 AM
Not exactly, we were both invited by friends at Discreet. They are dying to meet Pascal I think...

01 January 2002, 10:31 AM
It has a wonderfull soft feeling about it. Love it.

Now wheres the rest of 'im.

01 January 2002, 03:16 PM

01 January 2002, 04:48 PM
actually I'm working on weapons.. lots of weapons.. some guys here started a war!!!

01 January 2002, 09:42 PM
Pascal, you are a freak!!!
Your model is Beautiful.
The glasses are killer.
I don't know what else to

um....can I animate him when he's done?...uhh...please??!!!:D

01 January 2002, 05:01 PM
Great work. Would love to see a wire frame if you have the time and inclination. Interested in how the polys are working and density of mesh.

01 January 2002, 05:35 PM
gonna post that promise! but at this stage, you wont see anything.. too much details :P

here is the rigged version..

still have to refine some parts , but I was expectng more complications from the pants.. basically the character is separated top/bottom and shoes.. wich means that I attached the vest to the torso to use the same deformations sets.
I used physique and biped for the skelleton.

arrgh forgot the tail again!!! damn damn damn damn...

01 January 2002, 05:46 PM
very nice Pascal the pose is calm and makes him look tough but , idealistic, well done, ok have a few crits now that I seen the full mesh

- the right forearm looks a bit squarish, maybe it's the shadows and light, but it looks kinda blocky as it stands

- the three fingers aren't grasping the gun properly, in fact the end digits look to short to bend around the gun handle from this angle :)

- looking at the back of the pants, I would add some more wrinkles back there, cause as it stands he looks like he's wearing poofy pants, kinda like MC hammer's ;) , plus umm he has no buttocks :p

Great work as usual bud, loving it

01 January 2002, 05:50 PM
excaclty the points I wanted to work on.. you have the eye my friend ;)

01 January 2002, 06:04 PM
holy *beeep* awesome work.
lol LD, hammer time! bum needs fix'n

01 January 2002, 06:53 PM
f$%king i need some warfare too....prepare yourself! =) this fighting thing is so cool

01 January 2002, 07:22 PM
Pascal you are out there... totally another planet man.

Trousers look as though they are filled with air on the shot from the back, I would have thought that they would have come in slightly at the back of the knees.

And I'm glad to see that as you pointed out on my challenge that I am not the only one that keeps forgeting the TAIL

01 January 2002, 07:46 PM

I so dont ever try to kiss ass but man ! that is divine (smoooch) in my opinion this is your best model yet with the refinements and tweaking i know youll give id really like to meet you one day maybe siggraph LOL !!

01 January 2002, 07:48 PM
the pain . . . the agony . . .

totally mad my friend :D

tho in the current pose, it looks like he sin't really comfortable with his prostetic arm . . . it's kind "hanging" out there
and it could be due to way to many hours behind a computer, but i can't for the love of me bend my hand the same angle as his right hand is angled in relation to his wrist/upper arm . . .
nowhere near that angle hurts like hell already.

thumbs up tho.

01 January 2002, 09:51 PM
Did you loose the bottom set of eyes?

I STILL cant get over that arm. I just love that damn thing :)

01 January 2002, 10:08 PM
Oh my Pascal, you keep addint his stuff, in a couple of weeks, you will need a more powerful computer!

01 January 2002, 09:52 AM
nickel chrome pascal !!!:D

I like his pose and the rifle was a good idea...

but I have just criticisms has to make on his clothes :

- like lildragon you should made some wrinkles....

- tha back of its waistcoat is a little fuzzy...

good work !!!

01 January 2002, 11:00 AM
innncroyable....., incredible , i leave my job as 3d operator and go back selling fruit and are god and i am a little..."piiiieeeeeppp " .... snif.. :-)

01 January 2002, 11:04 AM
Excellent model , nice alllll , i love :D :D
c vraiment du bon boulot ,j attends avec impatience la suite

01 January 2002, 01:18 PM

So here it is, I will post closups if you guys wants... Maybe the most accomplished character I have ever made! This challenge as been really motivating, so I thank you all for feedbacks and critics :D
Thanks again to Cerreto and Logan arts for bringing us this cool idea on Cgtalk.

01 January 2002, 06:34 PM
Time for textureing:)
Really nice work Pascal

Oh and how about that wireframe :)

01 January 2002, 06:35 PM
Pascal he is so cool, and of course we want close ups.

Did everyone read the small print about the winner having to produce a detailed tutorial on all the steps they took to build their model. hehehe

01 January 2002, 06:45 PM
Yeah, it' s a good idea :D

Ah ah, all the steps in edged faces, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, lol :p

It' s really a great job... I ve always my winner :p

"Bats toi avec les meilleurs, Crèves avec les autres..."

01 January 2002, 09:06 PM
well done, I like the second pic better :)

nicely done bud

01 January 2002, 09:09 PM
Wow, magnificent! A little personal note: I think it will look better with the tail a little shorter and thinner, he looks a little off balance.

Yeah, damn good!

01 January 2002, 09:56 PM
holy crap!!!!!!!!!

it gets me depressed that I'm such a nothing in comparison.

01 January 2002, 12:17 AM
I have just the name and story for this character :

The Story:

In The Beginning of the 1000 a.d. a colony of Space Alien landing on a region of Africa and....This "guys" decide to keep a sample of Most intelligent creature on this planet......(for they but for we it's only a lion ^_^)

90 years after The Space Alien Mix their DNA with a Sample Intelligent creature of the eart......with biotechnical Creature...

a Pirate Space Lion.......

01 January 2002, 02:57 AM
BRAVO....BRAVO...... another nice model my friend. Great pose you have him in there. Hell, a nice piece overall. :D :D

Facial Deluxe
01 January 2002, 05:23 AM

Will we have the chance too see some wire plz plz ?

01 January 2002, 05:41 AM
great, just great!

01 January 2002, 05:42 AM
Really cool !
Could we see how the tail merge into his trousers ? (I want to see his bottom :D)

Krep Suzeth
01 January 2002, 09:45 AM
Good work, my friend !!!

Now the arm and the hand with the gun is nice !
Cool pose.

Crits now :D

The tail. It seem "flat" at the beginning. I don't understand the shadows on it.

The belt. Perfect on the first pic, it seems unweighted on the second one. ???

Where is his spaceship ? ;) huhuhu !!!

Ben finalement, tu t'en est bien sorti avec ton mousquet !

01 January 2002, 12:34 PM
Al I can say is WOW!!
I really would like a closer look at the prosthetic hand

01 January 2002, 05:16 PM
video tutorials!! :p

Is he very complex to work with him?

This is the best one I think.

Very good the lion's tail!

01 January 2002, 08:34 PM
It took me almost half an hour to read this post. (including the french :D ) and DAMN you got skilzzzzz boy! you gotsta animate that dude :D

Does he use any softdrugs?
he looks like a interstellar-hybrid-hiphop-hippy-pirate
*passes the dutchie*
now go on and cut off some heads :p

el gatto
01 January 2002, 09:16 PM
Beautifull !! :) I can't get my eyes of thoses boots and the arm too, so nicely detailed... Bravo !!

01 January 2002, 10:37 PM
hey Pascal,

I love the attitude of your character.... it is well done, all the beautiful curve and mechanical attributes just blend really good...

but!! my favorit trade of your character would be the 4 eyes and the 4 lensed glasses eheh, must be really expensive to have 4 eyes :)

01 January 2002, 01:08 PM
That's really not nice Pascal! Blowing the competition out of the water like that... :D Congratulations on a very well designed character! It's nice to hear that you, as well, have refined your skills here.

Which is why I want to take the moment to point out that there is debate about this great idea, with challenges in this way. All readers: Please read the thread and submit your comments if you have any.

Pascal: Thank you once more for an amazing performace! Relating to the above mentioned thread, you are one of my elephants! :)

Hail to the king!

01 January 2002, 07:50 PM
gotta render lots of views next week ( yeah yeah wire shots too :p ) here is a little bigger version as asked, couldn't resist.. I added a sword :D :D :D

01 January 2002, 08:02 PM
stop it! don't work on him more!!! you're just doing it harder for the rest of of us to win this :D

really like the chain you've added, it fits the character well.

01 January 2002, 08:40 PM
Jeeesus. Will someone please hire a hitman to take Pascal out? I'll pitch in. :P Seriously tho, that is some damn nice work there. Your best work yet, imho.
The turn out for this challenge has been tremendous! I am just amazed at how much talent has been in hiding. Good job to whomever came up with this contest. I hope that the next challenge is up my alley, cause I'd really like to get in on this madness as well. :)

Adam Klein
01 January 2002, 08:45 PM
looks great, I've watched it develope, just now joined the chat, I'd hope to see this guy with some textures, he really is an interesting character.

ADam K.

01 January 2002, 11:57 PM
yup thx for the advise adam (and krepsuseth), i'll work on that...

martin.. $50??? for real???:D :D :D

01 January 2002, 01:54 AM

ya know, the villagers would definately rebel against you if you didn't throw some tutorials on here (or better yet, on your website) explaining step by step just how ya make a masterpiece like this.

Dude, your work is brilliant. Just how ya do it simply leaves us befundled!

01 January 2002, 02:18 AM
that looks incredible I´ve been watching the còmpetition very close and your work is great but maybe your shadows should be a little more dark ´cause in the right arm the shadows are so soft that it gets wach out (sorry my english), I mean no definition or details are visible...anyway just my opinion ;)

01 January 2002, 03:32 AM
Die! Die beautiful alien! It kinda reminds me of the tiger charcter from Final Fantasy 7(Red XIII ?), mixed with Cloud's body, really nice job on the whole realxed style! (better than they did ;)) I only have a few nitpicks, the tail kinda needs a little better intigration (compared to the rest) and perhaps a slightly rounded edge on the pants top would make them look more solid, oh yeah and belt-loops :D ! ["hitman who said hitman"] My little alien on the other hand agrees with matt and martin . . . the target ( web site/pirate/motiontest4.avi)
(sorry for his walk, he has arthritis big time :D) he awaits his payment for . .
REVENGE! !! Us little guys will fight back! ;)

see you,

01 January 2002, 05:07 AM
Pascal blanché that truly amazing man I with Martin another 50 bucks for the pot. Your next Challenge I going to have to get in on that threes one big talent pool here.

01 January 2002, 05:26 AM
I like your work Pascal, nice to see it evolve.

wheres the ship.....j/k

01 January 2002, 05:50 AM
Hey yeah. I would like to see you guys make the enviroments next. That could get interesting also.

01 January 2002, 10:01 AM
Just totally fooking awesome !!! :D

There is a little observation I have made and that is that the headscarf top right of his forehead seems to cut in2 his head.

Would love 2 see (it) animated...

P.S. Do any of u guys go 2 work at all ???

Adam Klein
01 January 2002, 06:23 AM
Ha, Ha, very recently graduated student here, I just posted my late submission for the challenge, Pascel's work is very motivating, he definitely knows what's up..... what package does he use,???? I thought Lightwave, but maybe Maya...??? or maybe... could it be... Soft??

who knows these days?? heh, heh. especially with modeling. HEH.

ADam kleIN

01 January 2002, 10:50 AM
I am sure you have heard it too many times but your work is awesome. Your last render is great. Just a thought - your alien looks in a stationary pose, I think the heavy chain (due to gravity) would hang straight down before it curve to the lower part of the sword.

01 January 2002, 03:41 PM

What.... no MAX. :D Have you modelled with 4.2. It's schweeet.

01 January 2002, 10:46 AM
Pascal ! Absolutely increadible. You are such an inspiration. I love the proportion of this character, so bold and strong. I do have one comment about the tail though. The first post you made including the tail had two images - the top image looks cool (tail looks fine), but the second angle looks odd (to me).

Just a thought :).

01 January 2002, 10:48 AM
Just realised how little info that last post gave.

The curvature of the tail doesnt look continuous - like the tail has kinks in it (if it helps, I come from South Africa, so I should know what a lion looks like ;-) hehehe - ignore the fact that I live in the city, not the wilderness :D )

Krep Suzeth
01 January 2002, 05:19 PM
Hi !

Nice ! I prefer the sword like that, dont' tou ?
Now you got a nice "silouette". ;)

Cool !

Ps: I'm skinning mine. Skinning in max is a piece of sh.t !!! Argh !

heheh thx Eric! (entre beaufs fo s'aider :D :D ) So what skin editor do you use? physique or skin?

01 January 2002, 07:02 PM

C'est quoi those magouilles !!!!

You are from la meme Famille ?!?

Si ca is not a motif de disqualify !!!!

I must relire les regles !!!!!

non non this is not a french post !!!!

Krep Suzeth
01 January 2002, 07:08 PM
I tried both of them. I hate both of them.
I will use fizik coz I got a lot of vertices. Skin is better with light models.
I got a lot of problems with the hips ;) the tail (???) and the left leg. For the tail and the leg my probs are really curious !
We have to talk about that ;)

Btw, I' ll get it.

"If it don't kill you, it can only make you stronger" :D

Ps to Baby : You can marry his sister ! :D

01 January 2002, 07:10 PM
A pool of talents, amazing what you can find here. Hi Pascal, im just a fan of your work, the complexity of this model reminds me square pictures works, vary nice model, nice concept and design.

how many time took to build the hole model?did you use 3dsmax? and at last, if you have time can you send-me an 1280x1024 image for my desktop?

01 January 2002, 07:15 PM
Then, send a desktop picture for everybody... Yeahhhhhhhhh

An the last thing : Vote PASCAL, Vote PASCAL,

"Mess with the bests, Die like the rest..."

Alors, envoies une image de bureau pour tout le monde... Yeahhhhhhhhh

Une dernière chose : Votez PASCAL, Votez PASCAL,

01 January 2002, 07:22 PM
Z buffer: square picture's videogame characters? thx! Actually, i'm drolling on the complexity of these characters yeah....
Cedric: Why not?
Krep: i'll tell her :D :D

01 January 2002, 07:39 PM
tout ca c'est magouilles et compagnies !!!:D :D :D

01 January 2002, 09:52 PM
Damnit pascal...just...incredible work! *resists urge to toss $50 in the kill pascal fund* :D

01 January 2002, 03:36 AM
I put everything down to same color ( no textures for this contest right?) and made some closups...
wires coming soon I promise :P

01 January 2002, 04:35 AM

01 January 2002, 05:39 AM
his sword looks kinda heavy
although the region where it's attached to the pants is not wrinkled or doesn't look it pulls down

try it
attach a 5 kg weight to you jeans and .....

just kidding

fantastic work, great inspiration to all of us

01 January 2002, 05:59 AM
Looking great. My only crit is for the tail which seems to have a square cross section? Something there doesn't seem right...a bit too angular.

01 January 2002, 06:48 AM
poop i tell ya! nothin but poooop!
lol you know im joking pascal ;)
I love it! awesome shots. I do see some areas that could use work but as if it matters comin from little ol' me, but here i go...

I agree with Matt about the tail. Personally I think a more reptilian like tail would suit him better than a lion tail. Im just not crazy about the hair at the tip. Also the sword is massive like Bytehawk mentioned. Im scared to see how it reacts to him walking. Maybe shrink the sword and set it more to the left. Just some ideas.

Outstanding work pascal. :)

Adam Klein
01 January 2002, 08:13 AM
???? ( no textures for this contest right?) ???

I thought I might have read wrong so I looked at the rules again:

"3D: just modelling an rigging, textures are a + "

My pirate already has some of them, many others do too, besides the 2-d pirates nearly all have textures.... I think it would really be more interesting to see at least some color....

Anywho, Awesome model, by all means fantastic work! That mech arm and gauntlet is killer :) .... I wonder if it can handle my big brown boot. Heh, heh, heh :)

01 January 2002, 10:33 AM
freak model he look really great, your the man , more comments...

ps: avec des textures ca serait magnifique

01 January 2002, 12:16 PM
I can't see anything, because I losed my eyes long time ago.. :)

%100 cool Job, i luv it !

01 January 2002, 01:01 PM
I-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E !-!-!-! :D :D

we want wires, tutorials, video tutorials, making off, magic powers,...we want be as you!

how you can work with so many complex models?.... is your bedroom the N.A.S.A ?

01 January 2002, 02:09 PM
There is nothing more to say, AMAZING
Just a quick question though, I have just seen Matt's animation of pirate drawing his sword and wondered are your characters arms long enough to draw that moster sword from its sheath ?

01 January 2002, 05:47 PM
im learning im learning keep posting ! this is fantastic was there ever any doubt who would have done the best model for the pascal challenge :) been a ton of great entries and lots of fun

i got distracted by alot of projects but this month i should do a much better job and im looking forward to it

Krep Suzeth
01 January 2002, 06:27 PM

I agree with Matt. Your model is fantastic, the best you've ever made (even if I love the empereureusseu picture).
But the tail.... Please do something for that tail !!! ;)

Now it's sure, I'm looking for a pizzaiolo job.

You're the winner !!! .... hum? What ? Matt Clark have animated his character ? So Pascal is now running for the second place ?
Not a problem ! Pascal is going to animate his own fellow for the end of the week. Right Pascal ? :D

Krep, the man who's gonna cut your hands off the next time I see you !

01 January 2002, 06:30 PM
Sure Krep, Pascal must do an animation for the end of this week !!!:D :D :D

(ohoohh les emmerdeurs....)

"t'es la t'es pas la on sait pas!!!"

01 January 2002, 06:36 PM
AN ANIMATED VERSION !!! Oh yeah baby, baby. I want to see those metal plates on the hand work in perfect harmony !

This would put you so out of reach of Matt, it can't possibly be possible, hehehe (that saying was brought to you by "stupid sayings annon".)

Although, there is so much secondary motion, what with the hair and jacket and chain and glasses and stuff, I dont know if it is practical (What !? Is that a challenge from a lowly pleb? Why yes I think it is....)

01 January 2002, 07:02 PM
k I'll fix the tail you winny people :D :D :D true that it's a little bit too square.. 'bout the animation, a friend of mine, Brent georges, is working on it ;)

01 January 2002, 09:17 PM
ok fixed

01 January 2002, 09:55 PM
some wires... let me know if there is other views you would like to see

01 January 2002, 11:04 PM :D

01 January 2002, 11:09 PM
Can we see a wire of the pants? (without smooth)

"Mess with the bests, Die like the rest..."

Pouvons nous voir une vue fil de fer du pantalon? (sans le smooth)

"Bats toi avec les meilleurs, Crèves avec les autres..."

el gatto
01 January 2002, 11:19 PM
I see a lot of polys with more than 4 points and I wonder, 'cause I know a lot of people try most of the time to use 4 or 3 points polygons, I guess it's more predictable when smoothing... do you keep that in mind when you're working ? (btw this is a question not a criticism;))

Well..once again,Woooooow ! great work ( I guess you heard that one before ;) )

01 January 2002, 11:29 PM
it happens when I start to chamfer the edges and some vertexes.. but I try to avoid it if possible yep.. usually, my meshes start really clean and.. hem.. after a while, it become a huge mess :p

01 January 2002, 01:23 AM

It s too beautifull
I want to do the same... Warning, In a few years, i ll take your place, lol...

"Mess with the bests, Die like the rest..."

PS: I ve just posted the same thing to Clark but it' so true :D

01 January 2002, 03:09 PM
Just awesome! The dude somehow reminds me of Jack Palance (maybe the jaw) Don´t know if it´s good or bad :D

One minor nag about the tail. It seems to come straight out of his ass instead of prolonging the spine.

Again, awesome!

01 January 2002, 04:37 PM
Hey Pascal.

Great work you've got there. Seeing your model made me think you probably had a perfect mesh. But I'm happy to see that even you have some polys overlapping each other. Thank Gawd for that.

Once again. Great work. :)

01 January 2002, 01:14 AM
couldn't resist :D :D :D here are some Arnold renders... I still don't know when it's gonna be out... impressive quality isn't it? :D :D :D

That sure became great, Pascal :D Real awesome detailing and style you got going there. Im a little bit biased against those folded-over pants (I think it is) around his waist anyway, looks sorta odd compared to the rest but except that lil part I really dig it ;)

Good job, Pascal. The only thing I've got a complaint about (besides the pants...) is the lack of textures. As soon as this challenge is over, you should map this guy. Now that'd be fun to watch.

Very nice work so far. Just wanted to point out a little detail thats been bugging me for a while. If you follow the lines of the characters abdomen to the intersection (assuming humanoid male proportions) not only are his pants extremely close to falling clear off, but whatever kind of male apparatus he has in those pants is in danger popping right out the top of the pants ;) But seriously there seems to be a large differnce between where the musculature indicates his crotch should be and where the pants ride...(just follow the natural V of his abdomen to where it intersects only about an inch below the top of his pants)...which also comes into play with the location of the tail...since the spinal cord would end just above the pelvis and the pelvis appears to end just as it enters the pants, the tail sticking out of the pants in the back would have to be much higer, unless it is indeed growing out of a slightly lower and most unusal location :p

hehe good point ;)well ...hem... he IS an alien so... let's say that you don't want to know ...where the tail comes from :D :D :D

As i begun to see your WIP, i was like "hmm" but as i read through all the replies and saw all the updates on the character , the anxiety to see the final Renders just kept growing, and off course once i got to the arnod renders then i was like DAMN!!! Too AWESOME, i am astonished .
I love the creature but what i personally like the most is the fact that the character has personality, even on the stills you can see his personality, i love that , it has character,

Unfortunatelly i still havent seen all the other work from all the other ARTISTS but with this im like DAMN!!!!

i take off my hat
wow Very Impressive work!!!

kind of like a new inspiration
