A quick base mesh for the baby monster.

Concept is a baby monster who happens upon a theme park and gets into some trouble. I thought it would be fun to portray a 'monster' doing what any normal toddler would do when they found something sparkaly and fun to play with.

This is my first time in the cgtalk competition. I have no alusions to winning. I am new to using Zbrush and Maya and entered the competition to help push me to learn more of the tools, and hopefully get feedback on my attempts. If you have suggestions on how to do something in a more simple way, or to make something look better / correct. Please let me know. The more critiques I get the better I hope to become.

The baby monsters face. It is only subdivision 3 in zbrush. And obviously needs to go further. I am trying to make it look like a baby minotaur.

Still roughing out the body. Putting some weight on him. I want him to look very fat / pudgy. I am hoping to animate a bit of jiggle when he walks.

I have decided to go another direction with the challenge. Is there a way to remove previous submissions? I will start on my new idea after my Dr. Appointments today.

Does anyone know if a script / detailed description will work for the concept part of the submissions? I can doodle in 3d but I seriously can't draw. I tried for 4 hours lastnight and came up with stick figures that looked like a 3yold drew them.

Hi :)

Don't know if what is following will help you but ...

Is there a way to remove previous submissions?

There's no need to remove anything ... you can change concepts as many time as you want ... The main rule is : you have to submit every steps of your final submission ... That's it !

Does anyone know if a script / detailed description will work for the concept part of the submissions? I can doodle in 3d but I seriously can't draw.

Starting to explain is great to let the people know what is your concept ... then an illustration works better to show what you have in mind ... it can be either sketch or 3D previz ... as you want ...

If you may have more technical questions you can post in the FAQ thread ( the challenge

Hope I didn't sound too much like the lousy old cgs challenger ... :)

A baby minotaur in a theme park could have been really fun to look at , but I'm also curious to see your new idea ... Good luck with Maya/Zb

Best of luck for the challenge , and especially have a lot of fun :)

cheers ,

My plan is to do a 'short' about a woman and her pet dragon. Some details are still in the air (I had this idea about 3am in the morning while my son was kicking my insides into pudding) but here are my notes on what I have figured out.

Characters (Animated)
Humanoid with wings (Female)

Props / Models (AKA things I have to make)
Mountain area with rock ledge
Trees (For mountain area)
Dog Collar (goes on dragon)
Humanoid Female (and her wings)
Humanoid Female's Armor (something a knight type would wear)
Optional / Undecided Items
Castle (will only be seen from a distance if at all, so doesn't need to be too detailed)
Tag for the Dog collar - Need to pick a name to go on the tag.

These are the scenes as I plan to break them up for rendering in maya. As well as planned shot decriptions (if I have decided)
1. Opening shot starts close in on a closed dragons eye. Eyes open and camera pans out quickly to show the dragon rising his head from his feet as though something interests him.

2. Quick shot of cloaked figure walking down a worn wagon road in the forest. See the person look to the left as though spotting something.

3. Back to the dragon launchig himself into the air, and obvious look of malice (or is that fun?) in his eyes.

4. Dragon lands with earth shaking force infront of the cloaked being. They nearly loose their balance. ragon squats down looking like a cat ready to pounce on a mouse.

5. Cloaked figure throws off her cloak revealing a pair of white wings and shining armor. As she draws her sword she launches herself at the dragon. Both take flight.

6. Arial battle ensues. They fight for a few seconds of animation time.

7. Scene changes to presumably some time later. Dragon has small cuts on its hide and is breathing heavily. Womans hair is a total mess and some of her feathers look frazzled. Dragon makes a lunge at her and misses. But as he turns to make another pass, strikes her with his tail while she is recovering. She is nocked to the ground.

8. Woman unconcious on the ground.

9. Dragon coming up to the woman, licking his teeth and looking like he is going to have a tasty snack.

10. Woman opens her eyes and blinks once then sheer terror passes over her face as the dragons shadow falls over her.

11. The dragon pounces on the woman pinning her in place. His big sloppy toung bathing her as she screams for him to get off her. Dragon staps back, wagging his tail with his tongue lolling out of his mouth and panting like a puppy. Woman telling him what a good boy he is, he does comical foot thumping while she scratches(think of a dog when you find a good scritchy spot) under his chin.

12. Closing scene where she suggests they go to the castle and get him a treat. As the camera dims the parting comment is that she realy needs to find another way to exercise him.

The only sound effects that should be needed will be the dialog, which will be my own voice should only be three lines of dialogue. Probably will purpously avoid having the camera focus on her while she speaks I don't think I will have the time to do lip synching Other sounds for his breathing fire and perhaps the wooshing of their wing beats. Might need some sounds for when her sword makes contact with his hide, but not sure what kind of sound that would make. I have no idea if I will bother with music.

Side view. Just trying to figure out what he should look like.

07 July 2007, 06:05 PM (

Front view. Subdivision 1-3. I know you can't see much in this but covering all the angles. I think his chest looks funny but not sure what to do about it. They don't exactly have reference photos of real live dragons to show me how the muscles work.

07 July 2007, 06:08 PM (

My first dragon! Never really made a creature before. I think I like the direction he is going, but need to change allot of things still. I really wish I could find some reference photos.

Anyone know a dragon who would be willing to swing by my house and pose for awhile?

Well since I am new here to CG talk and havent had a chance to do much more than read peoples stuff and not post much I don't expect too many people to care if I continue in this challenge or not.

But, I thought the polite thing to do would be to tell people I can't keep going on this currently. I origionaly joined the competition because I had *plenty* of time to do nothing but sit at my computer (seeing how I am 8 months pregnant and cant do much else). But recently its become way too uncomfortable to sit in my computer chair. So all that spare time I had to do nothing but play with the challenge is gone unless I can magicaly make my computer chair pregnancy friendly. My doctors have also increased my visits to them to twice a week, and none of them can coordinate worth crap so I am spending 6-8 hours in town sitting on my rear waiting for my next appointments twice a week.

I may still work on this on and off but I seriously don't think I will have time to finish what I had planned to do now.

thats a pitty, oh well getting a nice baby is much more important, better concentrate on that. good luck with it. BTW, Nice dragon you made there.

Sorry you wont be able to finish, but Im sure I speak for everyone when I say that We hope everything goes well for you and your baby! Good luck! :wavey:
