Hi there people, just thought I'd say a few things about myself and this entry but first things first, good luck to all who are entering this competition, it's a great opportunity for us to all learn and to develop ourselves.

I'm going to be the spokes person for the group I'm in, which currently stands at myself, Matt Jones(M477) and Terry Wu(Terywu). We've decided to modify the screenplay with the theme being that the gallery is exhibiting paintings based on the 7 deadly sins and that Amy is in charge of collecting potential victims to be assimilated into the paintings.

We're hoping to use a combination of live action and cg to present our final film, currently we're still in the process of finalising the story and hope to get this done by the end of the week, concept pieces, story boarding etc will follow in the weeks after.

We're hoping to learn a lot from the community so any crits and comments are warmly welcome.

07 July 2007, 11:48 AM (

M477 - This is a concept I have sketched up in Photoshop for the Elephant Man. The idea behind this painting is that he will represent the deadly sin of Gluttony. I want him to be fat and ugly with food and drool on his suit to emphasise this. The painting is signed Gula which is the Latin for Gluttony.

I will work some more on this so any C&Cs are very welcome!

07 July 2007, 02:28 PM
Nice idea and start guys.

Good luck.

07 July 2007, 03:27 PM
Your concept is really good. i'm waiting for the story board. good luck.

07 July 2007, 03:22 PM
Hi Steve, matt and Terry , :)

Tomorrow we should have a version of our revised script up on this thread (would post it now but need to get it into the correct format and it's a bit late), so instead will update with Matt's 'Gula' painting.

Now a word from M477 -
"Away from the script preparation I have spent time working on the Gula painting. I have added in a lot of detail but there is more to add and adjust. So far I am happy with the way it is turning out but of course C&Cs are welcome as ever. Thanks, Matt"

07 July 2007, 11:38 PM
Sonic X - Thanks

fido972 - Script first, then storyboard later. Should be fun, hope you like them when they arrive!

mim-Armand - Hey thanks for stopping by, we appreciate the comments and hope you like what we post in the future :arteest:

07 July 2007, 02:00 AM
Go gula go! I like the resolution of the costume into a business suit. Can't wait to see the rest of the 7, especially socors and luxuria. Looks like you have an interesting challenge. Looking forward to the rest.

07 July 2007, 07:58 AM
Thanks for the props bstout :). At the moment we're only planning on painting 4 of the 7 sins for the challenge though we might do the others if the script requires it or time permits it :).

I've added colour, but keeping it fairly desaturated. I'm going to move off of this for a while now as it is as good as finished and onto some storyboard concepts. It may be changed further down the line to fit in with any design changes that we may make, such as the addition of large chains to pull him down and maybe his expression will change or the lighting altered. Otherwise for now - meet Gula :)

07 July 2007, 02:26 PM
amazing work of art! I'm waiting to see more. This promises to be a great short film!

07 July 2007, 10:59 PM
Uh wow... this is some big project you plan to do there... I wish both of you good luck and will follow this entry... as always matt :)

07 July 2007, 11:09 PM
This challenge is hard, trust me I know. But its fun and a lot to learn.
Keep posting, I'm subscribing now!

07 July 2007, 11:44 AM
hdri - Hey, thanks for the kind words, I'm a real fan of your work :wise:

theuni - Good to see you over here, hopefully this will be my biggest and best accomplishment ever! And as we are working as a team we really don't have any excuses not to finish! Thanks for visiting

coolkonrad - Yeah I agree this is going to be very tough. I really hope that we can print our imagination onto film with this one! I personally have not made any live action stuff for several years so this is going to be quite a journey. :)

07 July 2007, 01:21 PM
Excellent painting. I'll check back and read your adaptation closely. Good luck!

07 July 2007, 08:26 PM
cool painting!

thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment for a newcomer. I really like the concept of giving the camera a persona and a reason for its existence. I really look foward to how this will come together. I'm an animator myself, it just seems like an overwhelming amount of work to actually get that done... well probably cause i don't think i could do it while I'm working full-time, but yeah good work! I'll keep on tabs on the progress of this project!

07 July 2007, 08:36 PM
I love the feel of the art - good work

07 July 2007, 09:06 AM
Great concept there!!!:bounce:

really liked the trunk face man painting

expecting something awesome .....

07 July 2007, 07:53 AM
Good progress guys, Btw I suggest to post screenplay as a separate post too (Paste text here), it's really hard to read it tottaly after that submitiing machine optimized it!

all the way goodluck friends, mim

Hi, I thought as nothing has appeared on the thread for a while I would post an update on what we have been doing.

First of all I am delighted to introduce Steven Bricknall. Steven has years of experience in production for television and his expertise in direction and script writing will be invaluable to us. He will be in charge of direction on shoot day, script writing and sourcing actors and equipment.

Currently he is auditioning actors for the roles of Amy, John and the janitor and is making adjustments to the script.

On Saturday, myself, Matt and Steven went on a location hunt in central Birmingham to look for suitable venue in which to shoot the live action as well as visiting several galleries to get a feel for the kinds of environment we wish to portray in the film.

Terry is working on a production schedule, we shall post up a simplified version of this in due course.

Otherwise, myself and Matt are currently working on concept sketches and storyboarding. Again, these will be posted up when they are complete.

Thanks :)

07 July 2007, 12:12 PM
Henrik Vasquez - Thanks, hopefully we will have a finalised script soon so keep posted for that

kingjai - Thanks for stopping by, good to see you here! It is indeed a massive task, hopefully as there is now four of us we should be able to break it down into manageable chunks. Without doubt we'll have to work every spare minute to get this done. So far it has been lots of fun though and the finished article should be something we can all be very proud of. Thanks for your feedback on the script too, much appreciated :)

vki77 - I'm glad you like it

aqua9 - No pressure then :scream:

mim-Armand - hi mim, yes I agree the resolution is not great. Once we have the finalised script back from Steve we can post that up in a better way so it can be read without a magnifying glass :surprised

SteveTsang - Keep it going my friend!! :wip:

07 July 2007, 08:45 AM
Wao ! look like a wonderfull future short film.

07 July 2007, 06:41 PM
Wooow. I love its style. Amazing Emotion. :bounce:

07 July 2007, 02:37 PM
Oh I love Gula!! Realy nasty body :) am very excited about the short film! Just curious, how many hours does this crew work on this project a week? looks like alot :)

07 July 2007, 11:52 AM
DeeVad - Thanks for visiting, we hope it turns out that well

ali-rahimi-shahmirzadi - Thanks, I'm experimenting with animating him in 2d as opposed to modelling him in 3d for the scenes in which he moves/reacts. His expression may change quite a lot throughout the film with luck

ChemicalSmile - Good question! I couldn't say exactly, but I spent about 6 hours in total painting Gula, maybe more you know how time doesn't seem to matter when you get into something :p But certainly with that painting I had a very firm understanding of what I wanted to create, the pose, the clothing, the lighting, which meant production was fairly straight forward. SteveTsang is working on Vanity and that is less straight forward as there are lots of details we want in the painting so already he has spent many hours concepting and setting up the scene, hopefully he can post something up soon. Terry has written us up a very comprehensive schedule which will be invaluable, we shall post up a version of this so that you can see how we are going about working to the deadline. All three of us have also been burning through lots of paper with concept work and storyboard ideas! After a team meeting, our fourth member Steve is currently working on finalising the script and scenes so once he is finished we can lay into the storyboard, which personally I am looking forward to drawing up. All in all many hours under our belts despite having only our spare time outside work to spend on it and so far and we have hardly scratched the surface of the project! As the storyboard starts to get produced SteveTsang will post these up for everyone to c&c, so stay posted!

07 July 2007, 11:48 PM
Can't wait for the boards.

07 July 2007, 10:38 PM
Hey, everything looks great so far. I love the script.

Keep up the good work.

07 July 2007, 11:08 PM (

Hi guys, sorry for the lack of updates recently.

Just an update to let you know we're still in the game. We did a location hunt last weekend, and came across a nice little gallery with the right kind of architecture. We are looking to use this room to film the live action though we plan to make the gallery much larger so we'll model the rest of the gallery in CG. We modelled the rough layout to test some shots before we go into the storyboard in full.

Thanks guys

07 July 2007, 04:53 AM
Very nice progress dude.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the support guys much appreciated, more developed work well on it's way :wip:

07 July 2007, 09:08 PM
Great work guys, pleasure to view. Keep it comming :)

07 July 2007, 12:19 AM (

Hi folks, just a quick update before I hit the hay.

I've been working on the vanity piece but have been taking much longer than have liked - kept changing the composition and so on but am happy to plough on now. Still to add the metal arms, hand mirror, tiara on her head and something like an extra face on the mount on the table (the idea is that since she is so proud she can swap her face if she feels that she isn't pretty enough). The idea of the regal chair and tiara is to help emphasise that she thinks she is very important and the hand mirror will add to this.

hope you guys like what I've done so far, as usual c+c's are most welcome :)

Thanks for everyones interest and support to date, hopefully will have more to come soon!

07 July 2007, 08:10 AM
Hi Steve,'
I like the location you choosed for gallery, thought you want model it and just using it as a refrence, if so it would be great if u use the same lighting and texturing as the real ref! it has a good feel on and works for me really,

Hope to see more from you guys again soon,
mim, ;)

07 July 2007, 01:34 AM
Wow. Just finished reading your adaptation. I like how you setup for the main story with the attention grabbing pre-title sequence. From what I've seen here so far in this challenge forum, this introduction looks unique.

The gallery set looks good. I imagined crane shots and creative lighting rigs for the live shoot when I saw your location.

Latest painting in progress looks alright. She has strong shoulder features and a sharp gaze. I don't recall what part her character plays in your script, or is she the bald headed woman?

07 July 2007, 12:20 PM
mim - Thanks mim, the Gallery was actually a lot brighter when I took the photo, I've done a bit of photoshop on it to get the lighting more like what we want. I could post the original pic too if you like. I photoshopped it to remove the paintings so thought I may as well go a little further - even added my Gula painting :p

Henrik-Vasquez -
Glad you liek the adaptation, storyboards soon to follow, I have decided to make a start on these and then any changes to the story can be added later.

It'll be less crane shots and more one of us climbing up into the ceiling with a camera! :D

This is Steve T's wip of Vanity who replaces the bald woman. He is yet to place the mech arm in the scene - this may be solely done in 3d for animation purposes, but it's looking great so far :)

07 July 2007, 01:46 PM (

TerryWu -

Hi guys, hope you're all enjoying the challenge I've seen some really cool stuff from the competition and some of you guys don't waste any time :) Anyway after playing around with poses and composition for the 'Wrath' painting I think I'm pretty content with where it is on the pencil stage. I'm currently rendering the image and will post up the finished one when its done. I'm still debating whether to put a cross in the background or not, any crits or comments are welcome! I'm also working on the scheduling and will post a simplified version when that's done too.

Good luck to the rest of the competition!

07 July 2007, 02:13 PM
Wow, i really like it, can't wait to see the finished one..

07 July 2007, 04:12 PM
your paintings are really good i like that elephant man - )

07 July 2007, 11:47 PM
Good job Terry. I like this drawing. Is the wrath supposed to be a fallen angel type? Yeah, can't wait to see this painted up too.

07 July 2007, 04:20 PM (

M477 -

Hi guys, this is a concept of the final painting pulling in John. After a bit of discussion we decided it would be cool to have loads of hands pulling john into the painting (thanks Terry!) and this is what I've come up with. C&Cs welcome, Thanks, Matt

07 July 2007, 05:18 PM
Wow, i really like it, can't wait to see the finished one..
Thanks Sherif! I would like to see the finished one too :)

your paintings are really good i like that elephant man - )
Thanks! Matt did a great job on the elephant man.

Good job Terry. I like this drawing. Is the wrath supposed to be a fallen angel type? Yeah, can't wait to see this painted up too.
Thanks! You're right the about the drawing, it is suppose to depict a rebellious angel who has his powers taken away and possibly become something else. People will have there own connotations about the drawing, but my hope is to send a message of someone in anger. I'll post up the finished painting once it's done.

07 July 2007, 05:52 PM
Really great sketch matt, I like this look! really scary! and nice idea about hands! ;)
The sketch from Terry looks awsome too! I love that even in this level! Btw dunno if they are paintings or some 3D characters (?!) anyway amazing progress guys, keep it UP! ;)
mim,

07 July 2007, 09:24 PM (

M477 -

Hello again, here's another idea, it's the painting pulling John in. It's from one angle which I think works quite well. C&Cs as ever are welcome Thanks, Matt

- Matt is a machine :p

07 July 2007, 11:27 PM
haha - your paintings are sick.. good job

07 July 2007, 06:52 PM (

Hi there folks :)

These are some initial costume designs for John.

Will be doing the same for Amy.

Hope you guys like it. c+c's as usual :)

07 July 2007, 05:09 AM
ohhhh man i like John amd the painting !!!

07 July 2007, 08:34 AM
Hey these new costume designs for John are great! I like all of em! really can't select one! I'm just intresting to know how you drawed em all?! are you inspired from refrences?!
Anyway you'r progress going really awsome and fast nowadays! keep it this way and Goodluck!

mim,

07 July 2007, 11:54 AM
Hey mim, thanks very much for your kind words :bounce:

I decided to use this method of costume design cos it was good for busting out a whole range of ideas in relatively short time - starting with one guy then copying and pasting and painting in and out different tops, hairstyles and shoes, etc. The reference was just a case of looking through catalogues and having an idea of what type of look I wanted for John (quite trendy and cool).

Am waiting for more updates from yourself myfriend

07 July 2007, 01:44 PM
This is realy great stuff people.

Inspiaring stuff.

07 July 2007, 02:28 PM
this is realy awesome.
the character designs work. choosing one falls down to what will work best with your john and amy actors and what you can pull of on your shooting budget.
also what kind of art gallery is it. scruffier types tend to go the more do DIY type galleries.
high end galleries tend to attract mor chic hipsters. your gallery seems more elegant than DIY so, unless you are deleiberately contrasting that, i would go with a more refined look for the two. especially since you kept the line about him being her just to get her to go out (sleep with) him.

07 July 2007, 07:47 PM
Thanks for dropping by guys :)

SONIC-X - Thanks for dropping by sonic-x, and for your kind words

bstout - You too bstout :bounce: As for the gallery, we are looking for a modern but grand look to it, hopefully the grandness will help give an intimidating feel to the scene, particularly when some of the areas of the gallery will be quite dark (think the da vinci code). But yeah, the place will be less DIY and more clinical.

All the best :)

07 July 2007, 08:17 PM
Those are really nice costume designs, i like them especially two of them and the two winners are :D

1 row : 3rd of the right side with this belt hanging
2 row : 3rd of the left side with this chain on his pants

08 August 2007, 12:09 PM (

Hi folks,

Sorry for the lack of updates recently, hopefuly things will pick back up and we can start posting up stuff again.

To start things off Terry has updated us with his Wrath painting. Thanks Terry :)

" It's been awhile since I've last posted but here is the Wrath painting. I will move on to other areas of the project now and will hopefully post more as I'm going through them. Hope you like the painting and as always any c&c to help improve the image are very welcome.

08 August 2007, 12:53 PM
Hi guys,

Thanks so much for the kind words and support over the past few months; there has been a lack of updates of late and I'm afraid the result is that we have decided to pull out of this CGchallenge. This is due to various reasons which include other commitments and priorities.

It has been good for us though; we've learned a lot o things on the way.

Thanks again and good luck to you all. Hopefully in our next attempt at a CGtalk challenge we will be able to take things further.

Steve :)

08 August 2007, 02:25 PM
thats too bad.

i was pretty sure you guys were going to win this thing.

see you next time.

08 August 2007, 09:08 PM

See you.
