Latest Update: Shading (Textured and lit): Mr. Strange walk
06 June 2007, 10:18 PM
What a great topic, this is goin to :buttrock::buttrock::buttrock:
My concept is a short film about some totally different characters,
whos fate is connected in a very strange way.
A small old man, a girl in a shell, a fat grub, a butterfly, a prisoner,...
The title of the film is "Causality".
Gonna post some sketches as soon as i have developed the overall
look a bit more...
06 June 2007, 02:28 AM
Here´s the concept of the prisoner.
His captivity is only imagination,
he doesn´t realize he´s caught by himself.
06 June 2007, 10:47 AM
Really interesting concept , the combination of all these characters should lead to serious interrogations!
Can't wait to see more of this !
Have fun and best of luck
06 June 2007, 10:34 PM
Thanks Zapan, glad you like it. I hope the characters are not to many
to be created and animated in the given time... probably to make it
work there will be even more than i have already listed...:D
The concept of the girl in the shell is almost finished, updates coming soon...
06 June 2007, 12:58 AM
This is the direction... how exactly she will look like, will develop out of the modeling process...
06 June 2007, 07:38 AM
the last sketch is very nice and abunduntly strange... good luck
06 June 2007, 03:12 AM
It somewhat reminds me of Medusa the mythological woman that can change a person to stone with one glance, but instead of snakes for hair she has one giant red eye and lives in a sea shell.
07 July 2007, 07:41 AM
icedeyes >>> Thanks. I´ll try to increase the strangeness even more.
lemasterjg >>>You think she looks somewhat scary? She´s really the
average one eyed metall girl next door... :D
Concept of strange small man is coming soon...
07 July 2007, 07:07 PM
I wanted the characters to be very different in style... so after some
sketching i had the idea of a 2D
character built from a minimum of
lines, acting in a 3D environment.
This is the conceptual part so far...
everything else will be done in 3D.
07 July 2007, 08:04 AM
he looks very nice... you just need to find a fitting environment...keep it up
07 July 2007, 04:40 PM
Thanks icedeyes, I thought about placing this character in a bright
environment... a completely white or slightly gray background will
probably be good...
I´m gonna have to do some testing, and i have to find a way to connect the
different places that will also be different in style, like the characters are.
After collecting a lot of ugly reference photos of grubs, i´m now ready
to start modeling this fat insect what should be lots of fun using zbrush...:bounce:
07 July 2007, 07:14 AM
Here´s the monster grub with friends.
What a beauty...
07 July 2007, 09:07 AM
Yer... I like the Monster Grub, cute... yet wierd at the same time!
Haha.. I love the "Prisoner" concept... I laughed at first sight!
It'll be interesting seeing the end results... Goodluck buddy
07 July 2007, 01:37 PM
Thanks Insomnian, i´m happy to hear you liked the prisoner concept,
it was my favorite when i started sketching... didn´t know if it would
come across from the drawing... :)
07 July 2007, 01:41 PM
Crazy concepts and nice modeling! I'm curious to see this work taking shape!
Go on and good luck man, I'll be watching!
07 July 2007, 09:43 AM
Thanks for the motivation Anubis3D, more crazy stuff is coming soon...:bounce:
07 July 2007, 10:30 AM
:D sweet..t and appetizing
07 July 2007, 10:48 AM
....from your sketches so far they are all very strange!! Great ideas so am looking forward to seeing this progress. Good luck and enjoy!
07 July 2007, 05:30 PM
ppook >>> Thanks. Yummy, yummy grub, yummy, yummy grub...:p
Claireabella >>> Thanks, good luck and lots of fun for you too...
07 July 2007, 11:32 PM
Like the grub concept this is also
a 3D model, that i modified in PS.
It´s mainly about finding a good
form for the wings... when this
works, i´ll start to fix the
structures and perhaps add
some more colors...
07 July 2007, 10:17 AM
fancy butterfly.. keep it up
07 July 2007, 05:11 PM
Thanks George  Updates coming really soon...
07 July 2007, 05:17 PM
Here´s the 3D version of the strange
toon man... i don´t really know how
he´s gonna look integrated in a 3D
Hope you like it, comments
07 July 2007, 05:43 PM
That's really interesting idea. It would be really cool if you could have the line-man somehow constantly deforming slightly, as if he were made up of an ever-changing line of some sort. Looking forward to more stuff from you!
07 July 2007, 07:45 PM
Thanks grantmoore3d, i really like your idea of the constantly
Actually i thought about expressing his moods by the form of his
outline... as he gets very disgusted his lines shiver and he looses
form to a certain point... i´ll have to see how it works when the
model is completed...:bounce:
07 July 2007, 08:47 PM
I thought you'd model it with a few black splines, without the cylinder underneath, on the sketch it looked so. maybe you try that?
07 July 2007, 10:46 PM
Good observation  I tried that before and it looked more like the sketch...
but within an environment that has darker areas, the black lines aren´t really
visible... the shading should help to make him pop out a little more.
I don´t have a final solution yet, perhaps it´s gonna be a very bright world...
07 July 2007, 06:55 AM
you could for example make a falloff material, which produces white borders on the splines (well I don't know if you use max), so that on bright background you see the black middle, and on dark background you see the border.
07 July 2007, 02:52 PM
Thanks for the tip, perhaps i´ll try that...
07 July 2007, 03:54 PM
Here´s the first 3D version of
the Girl in the shell.
I think i´ll take it into Zbrush
and see where it leads me...
Hope you like it, comments would
be really appreciated...
07 July 2007, 07:06 AM
I like how the girl started... very stylized and true to the concept... keep it up
07 July 2007, 02:12 PM
Thanks a lot, luckily the concept was easier to transfer into 3D than i thought...
I made some test animations, one of them i uploaded to my portfolio, you can
watch it there if you like...
It´s very short showing the girl in the shell (Eyeleen), with some "hair" dynamics
and wild eye movement.
07 July 2007, 07:38 AM
the animation is lookin nice and creepy.. keep it up
07 July 2007, 02:38 PM
Yer... it is comin along nicely!
Just curious... Are you going to animate the eye blinking?
07 July 2007, 01:28 PM
Thanks for your comments... hahaha... of course she´s goin to blink!! :bounce:
07 July 2007, 04:09 PM
I tried to make the shape of her head
look more feminine and worked on her
hair. The body is almost finished...
got to refine proportions and details
a bit more.
As always comments are welcomed,
07 July 2007, 04:35 PM
Nice modeling xioncajou, very alike the concept!
07 July 2007, 12:28 PM
it looks great... the only problem is that the feet seem to small and round in the front...
keep it up
07 July 2007, 05:30 PM
*** UPLOAD ERROR ***
07 July 2007, 10:13 PM
Thanks a lot for your comments, i´ll
see if her feet need some more work...:]
This is the prisoner 3D version.
Although the model isn´t very
clean yet, i´m pretty satisfied
with it. I think it resembles
the personality of the sketch
to a certain point... but i
don´t know... perhaps he´s goin
to look completely different,
when he´s finished...
07 July 2007, 10:22 PM
Retopologized model in Zbrush,
raw texture, rendered with MR
fastskin + ambient occlusion,
07 July 2007, 08:55 AM
eyes look very good, he needs eyebrows and the texture as well as geometry around the mouth dont look that good right now (too much stretching going on and there are no edge loops that you might need for the animation)... just my thoughts... keep it up
07 July 2007, 12:51 PM
Thanks George, i´ll see if these things can be improved... should he have eyebrows..?
hmmm... don´t know yet...
07 July 2007, 10:33 AM
Giving facial expressions to a character
that doesn´t really have a face is fun,
especcially as the eyes make a big part
of it in a normal face...
Except the blink, theese are all PS
liquified versions of the first one.
07 July 2007, 08:01 AM
Hey Semih... ok imho you must not deform the eye at all in any of the expressions... it looks bad... 2 and 5 must be replaced with something else... since the eye is horizontal try and work it out as a cycplos eye from the side... just my thoughts
07 July 2007, 10:42 AM
I think deforming the eye itself looks good, it adds personality and flexibility.
From a technical point of view, doing this in 3D means a lot more work than
just animating the eyelids, so if i can get the amount of expression i´m goin
for without changing the eye´s shape i´ll do that.

Software: 3ds max
This is roughly how i imagine her to be... dancing and perhaps breaking stuff
while she freaks out because her shell was destroyed.
It´s mocap... probably the final version will be a mix of mocap files and handanimation...

08 August 2007, 02:31 PM
very nice movements!
i like it =)
08 August 2007, 01:47 PM
Thanks laurentino, i was really happy when i found it in my mocap library... it´s very close
to what i wanted her to do. Animating moves like this by hand would be... difficult.
I´m stuck in the moment... many characters and places...
Splitting everything in pieces to make the amount of cameras, lights and animation
easier to handle takes a lot of time. None of the characters is really finished and i
need to add some kind of bird creature to complete the plot.
Luckily we have 3 years time to finish it... what... only 3 months? Now i´m in trouble.

This is the floor the girl in the shell dances on. Then she takes a bow,
jumps in the air and as she hits the floor it becomes liquid and she
disappears, the waves generate drops and theese drops transform
into grubs. One of the grubs is really big and starts eating the others...

09 September 2007, 12:58 PM
Still need to fix his face texture and
refine the hands...
09 September 2007, 07:26 PM
The Strange 2D Man is now more graphical again like in the first sketch...
The environment will probably be filled
with more stuff like theese hand-trees...
09 September 2007, 08:25 PM
I added some color and more objects are 3d now without loosing the grapical look (hopefully)... also the format was changed
to something around 16/9... what will be the final format.
09 September 2007, 09:32 PM
Eyeleen´s proportions are now more stylized like in the first sketch.
I also worked on the shading... it takes a lot more time to render but without raytracing it just doesnt look right...
09 September 2007, 09:48 PM
Line drawing man was so eccentric
09 September 2007, 06:34 PM
Thanks SEMSAHMER, he´s the one that got me busy the last days...
He and Eyeleen meet in the beginning of the story... making a 2d and a 3d character interact
gave me some headaches, now everything except his face is 3d so it should work together.
09 September 2007, 08:33 PM
Software: 3ds max,Photoshop
Here´s a first composition of both the characters combined in one environment.
Mr. Strange will pick up the shell with one hand... so the girl is a lot smaller than
him but he´s goin to be scared anyway...

Software: 3ds max
The butterfly has completely changed, he is a quadfly now...

09 September 2007, 11:07 AM
New Character! All the characters are completed now and i move on to rig them and start animating.
09 September 2007, 11:11 AM
Here´s a first composition of all the characters.
Hope you like it =)
10 October 2007, 05:34 AM
Still busy rigging... in the meantime i wanted to show this update, some minor modeling tweaks and especcially an almost final shading. Also i decided to make the ground single colored, the liquid effect i posted earlier looks a lot better this way. As you can see, the handtrees have also been modified a little.
10 October 2007, 10:26 AM
His flight looks strange, but imagine him trying to pick up food...
Thought about orienting his beak in the right direction... perhaps i´ll change that later, depending on the ending of the story...

Topology was improved for better deformation also the placement of the joints is better now, especcialy in the shoulder and pelvis area.

Cannibal Grub hunts his food...
I´ll try to post the animated scene soon.
10 October 2007, 02:20 PM
Finally rig and facial morphs work... here a small preview.
Had to reduce the render quality, with this few samples average frame time was
about 7 secs. The final quality takes about a minute per frame...
