Fantastic painting, reminiscent of the masters. I think that the perspective may be bit off though. The guy on the left, his head should maybe be higher.
09 September 2007, 02:48 PM
An update, added a lot of cold colors and some more progress on the detailling. Still a long way from being finished.
10 October 2007, 01:22 PM
An update. Coming closer and closer, although there is still a LOT to be done =)
10 October 2007, 01:55 PM
Nice work. The pose and expressions are excellent. Will the bg stay black (or near) or would there be a "real" environment ?
10 October 2007, 08:32 PM
I am loving this piece.. great characters and expressions! Keep it coming.
10 October 2007, 09:35 PM
hahaha... very funny concept David
10 October 2007, 02:50 PM
refined some stuff, and finally made a decision about the background. Added one element to it to make the perspective clear and to strenghten the composition.
Still some minor stuff to do.
10 October 2007, 03:07 PM
Nicely done, Keep going friend!
10 October 2007, 09:41 PM
Thnx man! :)
10 October 2007, 12:34 AM
Wow David, that's some amazing work! The idea and composition are... very cool, and also quite different from others! You clearly got a very good eye/hand for lighting and shape, which brings these 'classic people' to life in a very interesting way. :)
All the best! & 'groeten'! ;)
10 October 2007, 02:58 PM
Allmost done, may add or change some small stuff still
10 October 2007, 04:24 PM
well what the title says. Done. I would have loved to work on it some more, but time forces me to stop now. Ah well, we'll see how far i'll get with this =)
11 November 2007, 12:15 AM
Like the expressions, style and lighting! Best of luck!

Excellent entry- I love the humour- it's also very poignant! The composition and the angle you chose to portray them from are great.
If not my favourite one of them. If only we could all solve the worlds problems over a game of...
what are they playing?
11 November 2007, 04:04 PM
This is excellent! The lighting is perfect.
11 November 2007, 08:05 PM
Thanks guys! It means a lot that you guys like it! :)
Ferg0: the idea was that they are playing unholy tournament 2007 ;) (shows badly on the cover on the ground)
Btw: I see a lot of people adding a story? I tried to find where it said that that was a deliverable, but couldn't?! Did I miss something?
11 November 2007, 08:31 PM
Hey David, you already know I am a big fan of this piece :D I would like to answer your question about the story being added to the piece.
When you go to submit entry if you look beneath the text box that says Notes:
If you are submitting your "Final Image", you should enter your image's background and story in this field
Go take a look my friend just to make sure you see it for yourself. I hope this helps your concerns.

Also david... given that we have been given more time, maybe you could put an "Unholy Tournament 2007" poster on the wall to compliment the game cover. You could also punch up the box art with some gold to tie the poster and the box art together so we can recognize that both say the same. Just a suggestion though, feel free to ignore...
I just think it would really help show the game they are playing; if you really wish to show that. Because at this moment we are really not seeing it at all. Unless "Unholy Tournament 2007" is the Title of the piece.

Hiun: Thanks for your great reply, help and suggestions!
You made me think again about the name of the game.... Do I want to show that?.. I couldn't decide last time so I did it half
I'm worried that one: It will remove some of the interpetation for the viewer by making such a thing so obvious. (Let alone the reactions it might trigger, but that is a thing I decided not to worry about)
And two: Text, numbers and logo's attract a lot of attention, do I want such a thing in a scene that's all about the characters?
On the other hand: It does add some depth to the image, more stuff to discover.
The whole question is, how bold am I. This works okayish as it is now. Will the addon strenghten or ruin it?
11 November 2007, 11:27 PM
To be honest... your image is so well painted and so well lit that I can't possibly see anything distracting it. I can agree that a poster may be a bit too in your face. The game cover on the ground is relatively very small compared to the main focus and just a little definition could really help it greatly. Don't make it obvious, I certainly didn't mean that, but make it legible. Your image is very interesting and pleasant to look at especially because of your lighting and detail in your figures. But when you explained what it is they were playing, it threw your piece over the edge!! I really think that making the name of the game READ would be great, but not POP out though. As you said, something th eeye could explore and pick up later :) Either way David, your piece is magic!!

Hiun: Thank you friend! Again! for the kind words and taking the time to give great support! I've made up my mind about it thanks to you. I will post it soon.

Who displays strange behavior hereÖ?
Why do we think itís strange behavior when three different important wise men are sitting on a couch playing a videogame? All differences and problems set aside to do a thing they all like. Why do we not automatically accept this as a possible truth? Arenít we the ones that maybe act funny or even disturbing?
So the question is; who here actually displays strange behavior? The characters in the imageÖ or you?

Ok, the muslim is always presented as crazier than others, no problem you are free.
But a question, where is Yahweh in your great neutral painting? He is a pretty good hardcore gamer.
I am not against this kind of thematic, but you have to treat everything in the same way.
11 November 2007, 07:25 PM
ghZaaaRK: Thank you for your reply. Can you elaborate on that? How or what is it, that makes you think that I did not treat everything in the same way? Where did I make the difference?
To make it absolute clear: I'm not trying to 'defend' anything I did or attack your statement. I'm just really curious about your opinion and your train of thoughts. :) Thanks

Thank you David, at least you want to discuss about it.
First, we can clearly identify two "icons", one from the muslim part and the other from christian part, but who is the third?
Then, strangely, one, and not the last, is missing. Why?
Secondly, it's pretty obvious you treated people differently in a way to make the focus on one thing. Look the man one the left is pretty unexpressive, the man in the right is afraid and finally the man in the middle is going totally berserk. In your opinion, what could be concluded?
Looking to the current climate, pretty islamophobe, and as i can see where you are coming from, i have familiy there so, i know the tendency there, we can guess easily what would be your real point.
But, don't get me wrong, you are free*, this is just you are not totally honest about your crits here.
Maybe it was unattentional, maybe are you lacking of deeper knowledges, maybe you are formatted or maybe not...
That's it, anyway good luck for the challenge.
*anyway many people forgets some duties going with this

ghZaaaRK: Thank you for your time to explain you view on the image.
I think I can understand the way you read the image.
But I meant it in a different way (partially). You keep saying thereís one missing. Itís not equal or honest. But the whole idea of this image was to question just that point. Why do we see this as 2 vs 1. Why do we see the middle muslimish guy as a radical one? Does everybody? Or do just a few people see it like that? Of course I made and used icons for the image and exacurated some stuff. But isnít it weird that something like this makes us feel like holding it back and not showing or making something like it. Or at least Ďbalancingí it out to make the criticism honest or equal? Why canít we see this just as a harmless picture of different (religious) people having fun?
But you are right till some point, and I only realize that now (more clearly). When starting this image I had the idea to give, well balanced, critics about a lot of stuff. But when I talked about it to different people they addressed me with concerns of the reactions it might trigger. So I toned it down a notch. But later I thought about it some more and realized that I was doing something wrong. Not doing something because it might trigger some reaction is fine. But then I would have no right to talk about freedom of speech or express it, since I would hold back and not support it that much obviously. I would be a hypocrite (or so I felt, since I strongly support freedom of speech). So I reintroduced some stuff. But maybe somewhere halfway I did it half and not as good or strong as I could have. (lost track of some stuff?)
Anyhow, the idea of the image is just to question the reactions people have with it. So thank you for expressing your vision!
